The 2022 Hyundai Kona Limited Is A Feisty Little Turbo SUV With A Glaring Flaw

  • The #HyundaiKona has been around for a few years now and last year, #Hyundai gave the #Kona family a pretty significant refresh. For 2022, the #KonaLimited is the most luxurious model in the family and it gained more power last year from its 1.6L turbo engine. This powertrain makes a lot more power than its competitors and doesn't use a CVT like most vehicles in this segment. Unfortunately, that extra power and fun does make for a less smooth car to drive in everyday driving.

    Hyundai’s little Kona can surprisingly still hold its own against its newest rivals, but we’d like to see the company offer a Hybrid version at some point. The 1.6T is quick, but not the smoothest option for daily driving.

    Honestly cannot believe it's been 4 years and I see more of these little S UV's than anything else and I am so glad that they at least have a good Turbo version because I live in Arizona where traffic is always fast and I need something that's going to keep up and give good performance on the road. Not perfect, but not a bad choice for commuters. LOve this video by the way.

    Kona is a surprisingly nice car (like all Hyundai & Kia products). My son-in-law drives a Kona for his courier business and loves it especially compared to the Nissan Rogue sport which he had prior. It’s VERY quick and nimble and with the seats down it has plenty of room for his business. Small enough to park anywhere fast good handling and very attractive… in a smaller package. By the way… VERY affordable to buy own and drive too!!! I like it and he LOVES HIS KONA! I’m in the same business and drive the Ford Escape s. Hyundai has it all over the ford from every perspective. I have this same exact car- same color even. It's my "second car" and I'm overall happy with it. Got the AWD for snowy winters- no one is taking SUVs like this off road anyway. Likes: The cabin seems to be built for passenger room, not cargo so front seats have more room than you'd think. Gas mileage is 30+ (after 1000 miles for break in). Lane keep assist is better than my Acura. Sound system is pretty good too for a low end segment. My gripes: As he said, in regular driving, the engine is LETHARGIC coming off the line. "Sport mode" does help a lot, but the car doesn't stay in sport when you shut the car off. I'm not a fan of the way the auto industry is moving to this "plastic cladding" for wheel wells / fenders. Even Lexus is doing that. Looks and is cheap. That's why I got the Thunder Gray- basically blends the cladding to the body color. Weird gripe but the Hyundai lego block grill- extremely hard to wash and wax all those nooks & crannies- spend like 2 hours cleaning the bugs off that grill.
    Overall, I'm happy with the car. Woulda got the N if it was AWD. Would buy again.

    It's a nicely style subcompact vehicle. But, I wouldn't call it an SUV. The ground clearance is less than 7 inches, and the interior could be packaged better to maximize space - check out the Honda Fit (car) and the subcompact Honda HRV (CUV). I remembered the days when the RAV4 & CRV were labeled properly as "CUV".
    Overall, I see this 5-dr "hatchback" as a perfect city car.

    I was cross shopping the Kona and Seltos. At the end of the day, the Seltos won. Sure, it's a bit more than the Kona. But the overall appearance, bigger interior, and more practical cargo space won me over. Not to mention, the headroom. I felt cramped in the Kona.
    I also find it funny that Hyundai detuned the engine a bit as I have the same Engine/Trans combo in my Seltos and it isn't really lethargic for me, throwing the trans into 'sport' mode also helps make it a bit snappy too.

      @@clifhellner1493 I have the SX Turbo with the DCT. I don't do a lot of stop and go traffic in my daily driving, so it hasn't been a pain for me. Took some getting used to as I drove a Chevy Cruze with a 6 speed auto prior to that. So figuring out the best throttle position on take off so I avoided killing the clutches in the DCT took a day or two. Now I have no issues with it in traffic, just can't really let it crawl like an automatic. As long as you don't beat it, it's pretty smooth in regular driving.

    • @clifhellner1493
      @clifhellner1493 2 года назад +1

      So, it’s not that there’s anything wrong with a DCT, it’s that you just have to figure out how to drive them? I heard another reviewer say that. Sounds like that was your experience as well. Which, I’m sure isn’t rocket science to figure out.

      Nope, I just have 2022 model in Steel Grey (Silver). As for the DCT, a lot people think "performance" when they see that (this ain't no Volkswagen Golf with the DSG). That isn't always the case. Sure, it adds a bit of fun to car, but it's by no means a rocket ship. In this application, it's more meant for fuel economy than sportiness.
      However, once you figure out how to take off with it, it's kinda fun smoking the odd wannabe ricer in a 3300lb SUV with it in Sport mode.

      I’m actually sitting at the Hyundai dealership now. Just drove a Kona 2022 Limited and a 2022 Kona N. As for the drive, The Limited Kona…definitely some turbo lag. Was able to get it on the interstate, once on the interstate it was smooth. Pretty quick. Fun to drive. Did a little stop and go, didn’t seem to bad. Little jerky, but nothing to crazy that I noticed. Main issue for me, was stepping on the pedal and getting that lag. Not terrible, but noticeable. Found it interesting, that Hyundai even puts a little brochure in the Kona, explaining the DCT and how it can overheat. Yeah, that’s a bit concerning 😐.
      Kona N…Pretty sweet! Fast. Virtually zero lag. You hit it and it goes.

      The same applies to the 8 different outputs of the VW/VAG 2.0 turbo, 3.0 turbo, (Never mind the Macan with the same powerplant and different HP).
      The Hemi 5.7 gets 357 in the 2023 Grand Cherokee, 375 in the Charger/Challenger, 392 in the Grand Wagoneer, and 395 in the RAM 1500.

      Literally just left a Hyundai dealership, as I’m in the market for a Kona, preferably an N-Line. Really like the look of that trim. They had a Limited (same engine as the N-Line) and a Kona N. Drove both for about 15min. My takeaway…The Limited: I was able to drive it on the interstate. Turbo lag is very apparent, as you mentioned. Not terrible I guess, but it’s there. You hit it and it takes a bit to get going. Once there, I found it to be really smooth, quick and fun to drive. Did a small amount of stop and go. Little bit jerky, but not horrible. Main thing for me, was the lag. This Limited was just off the truck. Found it interesting that inside the Limited, Hyundai had a small pamphlet explaining that the DCT can overheat in certain driving conditions. Found that a bit concerning.
      Kona N…Wow, pretty sweet! No lag. You hit it and it responds quickly. Very fast and sporty. Two completely different driving experiences. Out the door, they wanted just over $40K for the N. 😐

    I kinda find the DCT to be a iffy transmission based on applications. I drive a Forte Gt and it performs reasonably well and definitely faster then my friends who have a stick. Maybe the programming between cars is different.

    • @JT-fq2bl
      @JT-fq2bl 2 года назад

      Hyundai limits the power in the first gear to preserve the life of the dry DCT. AWD is probably another factor why they limited the power too. I bet the FWD models are programed closer to the Forte GT/Elantra N-Line. The DCT is a delicate transmission that will never recommend to automotive delayed (non enthusiasts) drivers.

      @@clifhellner1493 well in stock form, it's a little bit faster then a stick. The revs aren't as high when cruising. And I've gotten around 38+mpg when I drive sensibly. It's not perfect. If you drive around in sport mode, it can be a little jerky like a stick at times, depending on your throttle input. Overall it shifts pretty well when driven normally. It can heat up on hot days when driven hard. I haven't had this issue and I drive kinda spirited 75% of the time. If you're gonna track it, I'd say get the stick.

      Thanks, however as this review states, there’s some pretty serious lag on the Kona Limited with its DCT. Actually went today to test drive a Limited Kona, to confirm. It’s laggy, but once you get past the lag, it was smooth and pretty quick and fun to drive.

    I thought Sofyan said this was based on the accent platform then he said around 8:30 that this is built on the older Elantra platform. I tell you when this happens it feels like a reviewer is just throwing out speculation instead of hard facts. Sofyan often refers to himself as a journalist even though he didn’t go to Journalism school. To me this just undermines or loses credibility. If this is his only job he needs to nail the details before posting these productions. I get the feeling at this point that I should consider this as nothing more than free entertainment. I would be ticked off if I was paying for this and making car buying decisions off of this. He also uses new words once or twice that he hears someone else say. In this video it was that the headlights were “divorced” from the DRL’s. And that phrase has always been used by Alex on autos. Another time he kept days Bespoke when reviewing an expensive car. You’ve never heard that word from him again. Lol
    Today the big word was diminutive. We won’t hear that anymore either.
    I guess I’m just complained about all the things that annoy me. I took a break from this channel for 6 months. The competition has passed him by. He is complacent. I’m going elsewhere for reviews. Take care all.
