I know I'm loving my Kona N and I just sold my 2016 GLE 63 S not for the Hyundai but because I couldn't pass up the money. One morning lets just say the Kona was shown to me in the same red that I wound up getting and I alway's listen to that little voice in my head that advises me and am loving the N. Not really missing the Merc except for the auto lift gate, massaging and heated and cooled seats.
Today 2/12/2023, I test drove the Kona N and was very pleased with the power, torque, and handling 😃. I was considering a Crosstrek, and the Mazda CX 30 turbo. I really like the warranty Hyundai has on its vehicles much better than the other brands. I really like the Wet DCT compared to the other models I was considering. I’m not in a hurry to pull the trigger yet since I have a 1997 Mazda Miata that enjoy driving around but don’t want to put too many miles on my baby.
@@Driv300mph Veloster is way more fun, lower to the ground, better driver feel and handling, less body roll and more go kart feel. Kona N is slightly faster in a straight line but have driven both the fun factor and driver feel to be is way more important than a few tenths of a second

I also wanted a manual but my girl can’t drive one so atleast i get paddle shifters with this. Can’t say I’ve ever seen one of these around here. I would really like a sunroof and i don’t know why the N doesn’t have one when cheaper Kona’s do 🤷🏻…Anyway you got a new sub from me, great video!
Loving my 2022 Veloster N DCT. Talked my mom into a Kona a few years ago and now trying to talk her into a Kona N as well! (The one thing i dislike about the car is the speedometer. That screen and section of the dash just looks weird to me. Besides that, love the Kona.)
Wifes Kona N is amazing love it. DCT went replaced on warranty at 16k miles so hopefully was just a faulty one from the factory.. otherwise car has been amazing fun to drive.
Yes, I got the last Kona N with comfort seats. According to the dealer nothing more follows. The new Kona shouldn't be available as an N version and to be honest I don't like the look of it either. I hope that the Kona N 2022 will retain its value. Soon there will be no more petrol cars, let's take advantage of the time. ;)
For 2024 the N-Line will have a new transmission. Hyundai has gone with a Torque Converter transmission hope it will be like the ZF. I see the Kona N as a great Grocery Getter.
I used to have the WRX and WRX STI hatchbacks. Loved them but are gone and no longer sold. I could see owners of this Kona N putting coilover suspension and lowering it slightly and have a true hot hatch. Looks like a great fun driving car. Topher I know you normally give brief evaluation of a cars sound system. Guess the cars sounds were the music to your ears!
I've got an one and used lowering springs dropping it 1.5" and went to from the 19's with 40 aspect to 18's with 45 and it's basically the same stiffness but no body roll less wheel spin. I went from a Fiesta St to this and with it lowered... it's a hot hatch. So much fun!
When I test drove this I couldn’t figure out the difference between N mode and N custom. I had it in full N mode trying to set the suspension to “soft” and I couldn’t tell if it was doing anything. I ended up not getting it because I thought it had such a rough suspension. This was in early march in Cleveland with all the potholes and roads buckling
My dealer has one on the lot. Soooo tempted to go snag it. I do prefer the Elantra N exhaust but after watching your reviews on both I think I'd prefer the Kona.
the 2024 is the N Line, not the N, some are saying they may bring an N to the lineup in 2025.. and the 2024 went away from DCT and is now an 8 speed Automatic... Congrats on the N. Did ya get a good price?@@mikeyinid

Well crap, I just bought my Ford fusion which I do like a lot. But my grandpa just bought his new car which is the Kona n and I like it so much better. It's comfy and fun and makes a great sound for a 4 banger. Well done Hyundai.
I wanna get the Kona N, but they don’t offer ventilated seats, adaptive cruise, or a sunroof 😭 I’m coming from an Elantra GT Sport with all those features
@@JackiePrime Hyundai shorted the US out with features. They all come optioned the same, heated seats, lane keep, single zone climate, with the only options being roof rails and the color.
Great Video! I just traded my Veloster N for the Kona N and I really like it. The Veloster N was sooo much fun to drive I was just getting tired of the clutch. I think I still would get the same fun with the Kona N but with no clutch 😆
great video. would you own it? I need a practical fun daily. Currently in a 17 GTI sport that seems to fill the bill but would like something newer. this might be it. Suggestions?????
My turbo hose came off twice and I have rattles show up inside and at my passenger side muffler 3/4 months in. Brakes keep making constant squealing noise which I was told should be acceptable, I don’t find it acceptable. Dealer experience has been neutral to bad, same for Hyundai corporate. Idk that I would recommend this car given my experience but one would need more data to be objective about it. I’m going to be changing my oil every 3K miles and sending it off to get analyzed every time. Time will tell.
@@carloscervantes836 those rattles inside are one of my issues I have with these lower budget car manufacturers like with kia. Lots of hard plastic in the cabins usually ends up making annoying sounds/creeks

EN vs KN comes down to personal preference. I think the KN looks better personally, I like the less racy looks and interior a bit more, and the hatch makes it more usable for me. I’ve watched and saw every review of the koni n and Elantra n. I wish they had a awd version! I’m impressed with the performance and personality. I just don’t fully trust Hyundai. I’m not one to leave cars stock.
Since Hyundai and Kia been very successful in terms of upscaling their cars and selling them even more expensive than their Japanese cousins, who would come in to fit the budget friendly car segment? Chinese brands, perhaps?
Wish I got a white one, clean. All the missing features are such a shame tho, I would have payed extra to get smart cruz and cooled seats for sure. I don't find 1st and 2nd shifts smooth on mine. I wish turning radius was better, I have to back up on roads where my bigger IS250 would turn in one go. The suspension needs an actual comfort mode.
I love the Veloster N but tbh think the Kona N is the most fun out of the bunch, even without a manual option. It adds another level of playfulness that no other hot hatch has right now
Hands down more fun. GR has an awesome 6-speed manual and a killer AWD system, but if you're looking for grins this is the car. GR Corolla probably can' be beat in winter though, I'm dying to drive one on loose surface.
@@TheTopher if only the GR was available when I purchased the Kona, I would have gone with Toyota. I think the core with LSD might be the best value but I haven’t seen pricing for it yet.
Mr T, will this Kona N be a great replacement for my mk7 GTI? Mine’s modded a little - springs/strut/shocks, exhaust, stage 2. I’ve always like the oddity of the Kona N.
Test drive one and find out! I've always been a GTI fan, have driven and ridden in several, and ultimately bought the Kona N. Upgrade the tires, add a rear motor mount or Powerflex torque bushing, upgrade the plugs, and slap on a piggyback or tune and you have a ridiculously fun and amazing car at a very good price point. I've done those mods to mine, and having had a good amount of performance cars previously including AWD sedans making ~560hp, and I honestly think the Kona N in its current state is the most fun out of anything and provides the most satisfying overall driver's experience. All said and done with vehicle cost, tax, and mods included well under 40k and drives like something an entire price class or two above it.

did you test drive first or order blind
@@Boomtowndogs I test drove it first. Only took 5 minutes to realize she was the one lol.
@@delinois2011 I might go in blind inshallah - doubt i can find one to test drive but she seems perfectttttt to me
I know I'm loving my Kona N and I just sold my 2016 GLE 63 S not for the Hyundai but because I couldn't pass up the money. One morning lets just say the Kona was shown to me in the same red that I wound up getting and I alway's listen to that little voice in my head that advises me and am loving the N. Not really missing the Merc except for the auto lift gate, massaging and heated and cooled seats.
The car this replaced had cooled seats and it truly is a pain they aren’t available in the US model.
I own a Mariner Blue NA6 and bought a Sonic Blue KN, five moths ago. They make excellent stable mates.
Fun video/ride along! I'm really enjoying my 2021 Veloster n, DCT. 16,000 miles on it so far. Keep up the great videos.
Traded my Kona N in for the Veloster N. Wanted the performance blue and manual. The Kona N is a riot to drive, great review.
Which car is more fun? Which feels faster?
@@Driv300mph Veloster is way more fun, lower to the ground, better driver feel and handling, less body roll and more go kart feel. Kona N is slightly faster in a straight line but have driven both the fun factor and driver feel to be is way more important than a few tenths of a second
Kona N by far imo VN is great but everything about the Kona N checked out for me.
@@NotLikeUss Kona N is great, I just prefer a manual.
"looks like a racing helmet"🤣
Dude I drove my 22 across the country from Wisconsin to Florida. I seriously have shoulder and neck injuries from it.. rides like crap but love it, best daily.
I bought this car in July and can't stop driving. It's so much fun it's ridiculous! Crazy that my ND Miata doesn't get driven much!!! and I absolutely love my Miata. Excellent review sir! I love how to switch to Eco mode when corners end 😂 i do the same!
by the way that wasn't the launch control.
I'm debating on an ND2 Miata. I'd drive that thing all the time.
@@CapFlipGaming i drive it all the time. ND gotta be one of the GOAT cars imo
actually european spec has adaptive cruise as well as forged wheels, headup display and most of all ventilated seats which is super unusual for a car in this price range
Ventilated seats?! That would be my dream come true.
I would pay extra for those features but sadly we are stuck with a chopped version in the US, no way to add them. Who decided to do this at Hyundai? Why lol
This seems almost perfect for what I’ve been looking for. I want a fun, reliable hatch but i also live in a area with rough winters and shitty roads that seem to always be under construction so this seems like a better option then others. I also wanted a manual but my girl can’t drive one so atleast i get paddle shifters with this. Ive been looking at Civic hatchbacks but i think I’d prefer this especially cuz there’s not already a thousand of them in my town. There’s enough Civics on the road. Can’t say I’ve ever seen one of these around here. I would really like a sunroof and i don’t know why the N doesn’t have one when cheaper Kona’s do 🤷🏻…Anyway you got a new sub from me, great video!
Weight Reduction, I believe it doesn't have a spare tire for the same reason
The N line up is really good, I have a Veloster N it’s the best car I had so far!
Loving my 2022 Veloster N DCT. Talked my mom into a Kona a few years ago and now trying to talk her into a Kona N as well! (The one thing i dislike about the car is the speedometer. That screen and section of the dash just looks weird to me. Besides that, love the Kona.)
I think it looks ok in person. Not the best though.
Kona N is my favorite Hyundai performance vehicle in the N performance lineup plus the Elantra N as well and Veloster.
Been waiting for this 👍🏻
Wifes Kona N is amazing love it. DCT went replaced on warranty at 16k miles so hopefully was just a faulty one from the factory.. otherwise car has been amazing fun to drive.
was it the recall or did it actually have issues?
Test drove one of these today. It scared me. I want one.
That startup chime sounds so much like Mario Kart
Yes, I got the last Kona N with comfort seats. According to the dealer nothing more follows. The new Kona shouldn't be available as an N version and to be honest I don't like the look of it either. I hope that the Kona N 2022 will retain its value. Soon there will be no more petrol cars, let's take advantage of the time. ;)
There will never be a car like this again, I’m convinced of that. Treasure yours, I sure treasure mine!
Awesome review!!! Can't wait to pick mine up from the dealership on the weekend!!!
I just bought one this week... I like the way Topher drives it, bouncing between eco and bonkers N mode is like night and day,
how is it on long drives
@@MattGarcyaDC I'm driving up way north from South Carolina soon... I'll let you know
This would actually be a very tempting vehicle if they offered it in manual!
For 2024 the N-Line will have a new transmission. Hyundai has gone with a Torque Converter transmission hope it will be like the ZF. I see the Kona N as a great Grocery Getter.
I had so much fun watching this video, I'm gonna watch it a few more times🙂 all hale the "N" cars
@@SB-mv2xv Good Job!
@@SB-mv2xvhow does it compare to the fiesta? I have an fiesta st currently and I’m curious..
They have one of Best DCT under $50,000(or higher) market.
Specially down shift with rev match.
i'm getting the 2023 version in the upcomming weeks i can't wait
When I test drove this I couldn’t figure out the difference between N mode and N custom. I had it in full N mode trying to set the suspension to “soft” and I couldn’t tell if it was doing anything. I ended up not getting it because I thought it had such a rough suspension. This was in early march in Cleveland with all the potholes and roads buckling
You can’t adjust N mode. Only custom 1 and 2. It’s firm but not unbearable. Feels like any sports car or hot hatch on lowering springs.
You can get a Unit from OEM that supplied these shocks that changes firmness.
@@racesuey I can get an OEM part that will allow the adaptive suspension to work as design but have a more soft comfort mode? Where would I buy it?
totally agree, i live in upstate ny, love my kona n but wish i got something smoother. the ride is just too rough
Here in Australia the Kona Elite starts at the $35,000 mark. I just put a deposit on one and delivery is next April. I am Driving a I 30 now.
The front lights remind me of Jeep Cherokee so so much.
My dealer has one on the lot. Soooo tempted to go snag it. I do prefer the Elantra N exhaust but after watching your reviews on both I think I'd prefer the Kona.
Get it before they stop making them! No new Kona N 😞
@@TheTopher good to know. Thank you 🙏
the 2024 is the N Line, not the N, some are saying they may bring an N to the lineup in 2025.. and the 2024 went away from DCT and is now an 8 speed Automatic... Congrats on the N. Did ya get a good price?@@mikeyinid
Ugh. I want this, but also the upcoming. Carols GR…and Type R are all so good! I want all 3 😩
I have this and I would go GR because you gain AWD and Toyota reliability/quality. I’ve had turbo issues with a hose coming off twice and rattles inside and on the passenger side muffler. The US model is also missing lots of features available in the EU, you can’t even pay more for them, they aren’t available.
Fantastic review!
Hyundai builds a vehicle at every level for every price range except expensive. I don't think a single one of them is a poor choice.
So kona n is better than the other n cars?
Well crap, I just bought my Ford fusion which I do like a lot. But my grandpa just bought his new car which is the Kona n and I like it so much better. It's comfy and fun and makes a great sound for a 4 banger. Well done Hyundai.
Exhaust note reminds me of the Fiat 500 abarth. Pretty cool Kona. Nice review, that thing looks so fun. 😊
10:03 With Michigan's endless Road protrusions, bumps and potholes, you'll need that 7 inches of clearance.😅
Great review 👍
It feels weird saying that it's too much fun to a fwd crossover
This would be for a hardcore Hyundai fan and they need a daily driver suv that feels like a veloster n or Elantra n
I do find the compact design combined with extra ground clearance very nice for a daily driver lol
I love my KN
I wanna get the Kona N, but they don’t offer ventilated seats, adaptive cruise, or a sunroof 😭 I’m coming from an Elantra GT Sport with all those features
Damn that sucks. I bought a Kona n in Australia and it has all those things.
Core CR Corolla with LSD option? You gain AWD with Toyota peace of mind?
I went from a 2008 IS250 to this 22 Kona N.
Kona N DCT vs Elantra N DCT which would you pick 🤔
Kona N, just for the thrills. But if you need rear seat room for kids, gotta go with the Elantra N, the Kona is tight back there.
What's the reliability on these you think?
I rented on Turo, two late model Benz CLA, more creaks than my Prius with almost 400K miles on it. But yeah, creaks and rattles seem to come with the territory with some cars@@RDKTB83
If the Kona N was just a little big bigger I would have considered it over my Elantra N, but with two pre-teens and taking my car on road trips it just doesn’t seem feasible. Still such a fun little hatch! Top notch POV review as usual sir!
I have 2 kids and a dog that's 45 pounds we take road trips all over the ozarks..... no complaints. Plenty of space. Your loss lol
@@Whileweweresinners ha ha not really a loss since I have an Elantra N. I still like the styling better on the Elantra, and it has more room and a more compliant ride, so I think I did just fine.
EN vs KN comes down to personal preference. I think the KN looks better personally, I like the less racy looks and interior a bit more, and the hatch makes it more usable for me. I can fold the seats down in my Kona and fit a twin sized air mattress and sleep back there no issues... While hauling a kayak on top with the factory installed roof rack. Can't do that with the Elantra!
@@apexcobra.official true. But I’m not about to sleep in my car lol, so just different preferences for different uses. Still an N so it’s all good!
@@n-power-automotive Everyone's purposes are different. I do things that require me to either sleep in my car or spend like $700 per weekend twice monthly 3 or 4 months out of the year, and otherwise once every 6 weeks or so I sleep in it while waiting for out of country flights instead of paying $150 to use a hotel bed for 3 or 4 hours. I'll happily post up in the Kona Motel at those rates 😅😅😅😅
G’day mate, I’ve owned my Kona n 2022, for the past year or so, previously owned a Fastback N, (which you guys in the States wouldn’t know about) but the Kona N is 1 hell of a vehicle….the NGS is 1 hell of a weapon. By the way great video to. 😊
I’ve watched and saw every review of the koni n and Elantra n. I wish they had a awd version! I’m impressed with the performance and personality. I just don’t fully trust Hyundai. I’m not one to leave cars stock.
Excellent video 👍
Since Hyundai and Kia been very successful in terms of upscaling their cars and selling them even more expensive than their Japanese cousins, who would come in to fit the budget friendly car segment? Chinese brands, perhaps?
Kia and Hyundai still sell very cheap cars. Chinese stuff wouldn't sell inUS
This or the Alfa ti sport 🤔 got a month before I decided which one to go for
the N line is amazing
I initially wanted to get a type r but i ultimately am choosing the Kona N because of the safety features like blind spot monitoring
It makes me think like what if Nissan did something like this and went crazy with the Rogue Sport and gave it the proper Nismo treatment and no CVT
That wasn’t launch control on the first attempt btw
@thetopher I'm dying to hear your opinion and comparison between this and the Veloster. didn't talk about it much this video
I love the Veloster N but tbh think the Kona N is the most fun out of the bunch, even without a manual option. It adds another level of playfulness that no other hot hatch has right now
@@TheTopher damm thanks for the reply!
Ended up going with the Veloster N I just can't get over the looks. thanks for all the videos!
@@atdhemorina3348how do u like it ? Dct also?
I just wish they gave us AWD
how would this compare to a corolla GR? Or does it compete in a different segment?
How does this and Elantra N compare to the GR Corolla you just drove?
Hands down more fun. GR has an awesome 6-speed manual and a killer AWD system, but if you're looking for grins this is the car. GR Corolla probably can' be beat in winter though, I'm dying to drive one on loose surface.
@@TheTopher if only the GR was available when I purchased the Kona, I would have gone with Toyota. I think the core with LSD might be the best value but I haven’t seen pricing for it yet.
Something I SERIOUSLY need as a daily. I just think it'd be a great compliment to my mk5 Soup. Any long-term owners with opinions?
28k miles of pure abuse on mine and zero issues so far. Had it for like 16 months, excellent car!
Love your videos! Question, can you attenuate those awful turn signals on Hyundais??
Thanks! I don't think there's a way to adjust turn signal volume/tone like there is in Mazdas
@@TheTopher funny, we drove the Mazda CX-3 Turbo AWD and thought the same of its turn signals!
I would, the closest thing to me right now is the Elantra N. The same dealer had a used Kona N but it was gone with in days. My GTI is tuned right now. So maybe the Kona N is the car to get. I keep watching the local dealer to test drive one.
Would rather spend a bit for for the Urus or the Purosangue. You get ground clearance, they are much more practical, and much more performance.
Yeah just spend a bit more true.
Lmfao you sound a bit ridiculous
