The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric Is An Affordable Quick Long Range EV

- The #HyundaiKona has been a huge hit for #Hyundai since it came out and while the Kona N is still the quickest offering in the lineup, buyers looking for the most powerful version can still get a #KonaElectric. It removes the gas engine for a 64 kWh battery pack and nearly 300 lb-ft of torque. The result is about 258 miles of range and a less expensive price versus the Ioniq 5.

I have the fully loaded model of this car. I have been driving it for about 2 months, and I can’t say enough things about how much I love it. I was really worried I’ll miss my manual stick shift Elantra GT but the agility of this small crossover has won me over. I get about 430-450km range in Canadian summer weather, mixed driving - lots of highway trips. The charging isn’t bothering me at all, especially if you quickly plug-in for 30 min at a fast charging station. Gives you enough time to get out, grab a coffee, stretch your legs and grab a snack. People are rushing everywhere these days, it’s nice to stop and enjoy some quality time while you wait for your charge to finish.
Overall, I highly recommend this car for its price, features, and the fact that gas prices are simply ridiculous.
Hey fellow Canadian! Where in Canada are you? I'm fairly north and was wondering how this car handles in cold weather.
tell us how it handles the cold weather
I just got a 2020 fully loaded and in the few days I got to play with it before the snow came I really enjoyed being very inefficient haha
This is honestly all the ev most people really need
There are already a million electric crossovers. There aren’t any electric sedans and cars with good aero other than Tesla.
@@devn3813 for sure the other million electric crossovers have tighter panel gaps than a Tesla.
OMG can we focus on other things other than panel gaps on car reviews? 🙄
@@gabem8119 okay Tesla fanboy
@@devn3813 The EQS, while not affordable, is the new drag (coefficient) king. Also, GM and VW have built cars in the past with a smaller drag coefficient than any Tesla. They're pretty great, but they definitely don't stand alone as the best drag coefficient.
I've been daily driving a 2020 Kona EV for a year now and I'll never go back, it's so much better than having to stop to get gas constantly. I don't remember the last time I even went to a gas station. It's also hilarious in sport mode with traction control off, it'll do burnouts at 30 mph if you punch it lol. Don't let the quoted 0-60 time fool you, that's entirely due to the rock hard tires on it for range purposes. It's very much a hot hatch as well as being massively practical. It's a 10/10 commuter car. Range is a legit 250 miles at 80 mph- I commute 100 miles a day on the highway and that's real world. At that speed you get about 3.8 miles per KWH. In the city though it averages about 6 miles per KWH, which means if you drive around town with high regen the range is well over 300 miles. Hyundai's range quote is worst case scenario. AC drops the range about 15 miles on a full charge. Never used the heat, live in LA. As for his criticism of the charge port, hard disagree there- this is a city car and the front charge port is much, much better for apartment parking space charging and public charging in general because a lot of apartments don't let you back into your parking spot so a rear charger requires a super long cable, and a side mounted one adds a bunch of width to your car- a problem in tight city parking. Front charging should be standard on everything imo for usability reasons.
This was the most helpful in deciding if it’s worth it. Thank you sm
How about in the winter time ,does cold weather and running the heater diminish the range ?
I’ve never ised the heat or driven it in the winter, this has been my experience driving it as a commuter car in Los Angeles. I imagine the heat would cut 5-10 miles of range, cold weather maybe a bit more but I haven’t driven in those conditions. When I go back home to Chicago I fly and rent a gas car there.
@@bluemouse5039 now you have to stop and charge and it takes longer
@@darleneanddonovan Yes. The cool thing about not being stupid is that you understand that your house has electrical outlets.
I had to sell my beloved 2013 Audi A4 2.0 TDI this spring due to the London ULEZ expansion. I purchased a dealer's 2022 KONA Ultimate edition demo and absolutely love the car. 80 mile round trip to work every day on the motorways at 70 mph, it only takes a maximum of 12 hours to top it up on slow charge over night to 80%. The phone app to schedule charging to take advantage of the off-peak electricity hours is a huge bonus because my work schedule varies and I can schedule the next charge while at work. Apple Carplay, live weather and traffic updates, live charge point info, and other BlueLink features make the car fun and safe to drive.
Very good and balanced review. I own Kona EV 2022 for 6 months. In my country (Indonesia), only the 39kWh version is available, but it is really adequate for my daily needs. The Indonesian version has only 4:3 entertainment display, as opposed to 16:9 display seen in your video. However mine has wireless CarPlay, so it is a plus for me.
I drive the Kona ev for 6 months and I’m heavy footed especially this 6 second to 60 car. Easily I get 260-290 miles on a charge. My wife drives it after 2 days a full charge shows 320 miles and it does that realistically. If any of u question it, I’ll send you stats and pics of the range VS real time Odometer data.
"When I finally parked it(Bolt) at my home charging station, it had gone 322 miles on a single charge. Not bad for a car rated at 238 miles per charge. Even more impressive was the fact that I didn't really try very hard to get that many miles out of it. I spent plenty of time in traffic, which helped, but there were a few sections that I was moving along at 65-70 mph as well. No matter how you look at it, 322 miles out of a Bolt is pretty impressive." - Ed Hellwig Edmund's
I beat the snot out of mine and get about 230 miles on a full charge

@@kennethtownend8301 any issued so far? I just dont have good experience with the dealer by itself. I had my veloster with alot of issued like turbo and engines broke down twice before it hit the mileage warrants. BUT their new EV looks cool.
Given the current state of rising inflation and gas prices, it just makes sense to go smaller and more efficient. I believe this is a step in the right direction where EV’s should be more affordable for the masses. It’s a perfect car for a young couple or the daily commuter. We all could use a car that is fun to throw around and drive! Thanks for the review!
A wholeass car for a daily commute? Where in bumfuck Kentucky do you live lmao
Given the rise in coal prices, electricity prices are also increasing. And your electricity generated by the electricity plants still produce high levels of pollution unless it is provided by nuclear power. Hydrogen is so much better! It's just that the hype for electric cars has slowed down the development of making the hydrogen fuel cells more efficient.
@@vishnuvijwani no is not hydrogen becomes combustion replacement but not a future solution
@@vishnuvijwani it does depend where you live, but EVs are sooo much more efficient than ice vehicles they are almost always smaller polluters. Plus, a new ICE car is locked in to pollute forever, but EVs are constantly polluting less as electricity gets greener.
The way things ( criminal ) are going right now. I don't think i would want to stop at any time to charge a vehicle in a public parking.
Very informative and didn't even draw breath throughout the entire presentation; unbelievable!
Have this car as a company car and like it alot!! My colleague gets 300+ miles on this car wich is pretty incredible. I drive it just like an ice car and never in eco mode or anything and 70% highway driving and i still get 275 miles in non winter. Quick nimble and fun car. The base price here is 32 648$ And the top trim with all the bells and whistles is 42k$ including winter tires
I just got this car Sunday night in the SE trim and I love it so far. Was able to lease it for a much cheaper price than the Model 3 and I actually like it more than that car as well. I test drive a Kona N and liked the EV a lot more. In real world driving the EV feels much quicker than the N. It handles great and the ride is so smooth and quiet. Love it!
Getting this in 2 years. Currently have the 2022 kona limited leased. Excited to get this!
I love how Hyundai knows you will roast the tires off a car, but keeps giving them to you. ... unlike other manufacturers who prefer you not do such things.
Keeps giving you tires? I thought those came on all cars.
Would be better if it were RWD. Roasting front tires is not fun.
What do u mean? The front tyres wear quicker?
@@gymjuiced The car has so much torque that it spins the front tires if you accelerate even moderately hard. The traction control can easily be tuned to not let this happen, but Hyundai decided not to dampen it for some reason.

Ironically, the less expensive Kona has a rear wiper, the Ionic 5 doesn't.
I reserved this vehicle. Can't wait to get it! Done with gas prices here in Los Angeles. Almost 6.09 and more everywhere.
Wanna buy this in the Central Valley!
Just bought a 2023 Kona Electric SEL Model a week ago. So far I love the car, It's very snowy here so I just put 4 Blizzaks on it yesterday and the car is doing much better in the snow now. I think the stock tires weren't even snow & mud rated. I found a DC charging station in town where I can charge it for free at a rate of about 22kw. Not sure if that's slower than normal or not? The car pulls the charge, the charger doesn't push it to the car so that may be normal, and I'm still learning about this stuff, but free is free. The 2023 SEL has the larger 10" display standard, but Apple Car Play still requires you to plug in your phone. Installing a 220v outlet in my garage (and paying $300 for a 220V charger) is an expense I don't need right now so charging at home is only on the provided 110vac charger and it's pretty slow. So I'll take my iPad with me and read a book while I charge for free out in town. So far I'm loving my new car!

I own an Bolt EV, and I typically rent ICE cars for long trips - recently got a gas Kona and enjoyed the drive; this would be a compelling choice!
A well presented review! Given the present scenario of growing inflation and petrol expenses, becoming smaller and more efficient is a no-brainer. Checkout the interior part at 6:39..... love it! thanks again!
My Kona Electric Ultimate - in the UK - gets 320 miles per charge, driving reasonably, but not super frugally. For the money, it's ridiculously good value, with every extra added in, like heated rear seats, radar controlled cruise control, auto lane keeping, collision avoidance (auto breaking), head-up display, auto lights & wipers, tyre pressure monitor & excellent 8 speaker stereo system.
The Michelin Primacy low resistance tyres help get the 300+ range, but the wheels do struggle for grip if you really put your foot down, but it still gives plenty of enjoyment.
The warranty is excellent - 5 years unlimited, and 8 years 125,000 miles for the battery.
In terms of value, it's an excellent choice. In fact, 1 year old electric Kona's with around 10k miles are selling for almost as much as a brand new model - the 8 month waiting period will do that!!
2:40 it is certainly slower than bigger EV models, but it is still under an hour for an 80% charge.
Great review, thank you for sharing! 🔌⚡🚘
Wow!!! This is one of the greatest affordable EV'S ever seen with the best price of course. But overall, fantastic job and review sofyan.
Throw the EV6 / Ioniq5 powertrain for a Kona EV N :D! Great review, I also loved your Kona N review. It helped me make my purchasing decision, thank you!
0-60 is 6.2 seconds is very nice, that makes it faster than the Bolt and Single Motor polestar 2.
Just bought a 2023 Limited Kona in the “Blue Wave” color and absolute love it.
Great review! Just wondering, what are your thoughts on the 2024 model. More precisely on the torque that will go down from 291 to 188? Will it loose its quick acceleration? Thanks
This is a very nice affordable EV, for a first time EV buyer.
Only if you live in or next to a ZEV state.
Ugly.
Or someone that doesnt want to spend $50k+ for a EV
Wow that's a very good affordable price. Gas prices are so high these days, I've been thinking about switching to an EV.
could probably mitigate the wheelspin a bit by running lower pressures in the front if you know you're going to be launching so often. You do loose efficiency but can make up a bit again for that by running the higher pressures in the back. Do hope it comes to Australia, if only to bring the price of other EVs down a bit more
Was nit a electric fan but got a red one since December 21.
Totally blown away. Quick. Once u get used to some controls (heater) as does not have like standard version. Also getting to grips with battery charge indicator.

I assume you live in a warm climate??
Just watch the video on numerous electric vehicles just taking a crap in Illinois
What 0-60 tester do you use? I think it would be cool to see a review of it.
Thanks for the close-up look. The more affordable EVs need the visibility. Shame that H did’nt give the Kona another 2” in the back seat. Probably would help their sales for all versions. That said, keeping it affordable is key! Thanks again!
Though I prefer the looks of the 2022 Kona Electric, my 2021 Model is a huge step up from the BoltEV 🔥🍋 I sold back to GM. I love telling my buddy with a BRZ how much Torque i have.
Next generation Kona will be spacious as the new Kia Niro.
The reason for so much tire slipping is not because of it being FWD. that is part of the problem, but the larger issue is the eco tires they use to maximum range and have low rolling resistance. If you put grippy and wider tires, I’m sure the car can hit 60 in under 6 seconds, but range would decrease
yeah we know bro
I wanna know what the performance and range would be with better tires
@William Arrington like a serial killer 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The reason is the driver....this idiot floors the pedal at every intersection.
Great review! Definitely looking into buying this car.
Your upload schedule is bananas, hope you guys are getting some sleep haha. Love the videos!
Thanks for noticing that! Lol we’re getting just enough sleep but trying to catch up on posting older videos in our queue :)
Thanks for the review. That front grill will take a lot of time to get used to. Adding it to the front of the car would be ok if they didn't make the door so obvious. It seems almost an afterthought.
In a way, this car seems to be living the life that the leaf dreamt of living.
Good in-depth review but I have to say that I prefer the look of the pre-update previous Kona electric the front charging port is more hidden into the grill, the front of the updated Kona is so bland. On the new face lift models in the UK Hyundai have removed the heat pump as standard only to make it a £800 optional extra all in all if you can find a low mileage pre facelift Kona go for that one. Gerry
The traction issue is in the category of "nice problem to have" most vehicles in that category will barely go. It would be interesting to have some tuning shop work on the suspension and put better ties on just to see what it could do. Kinda like a "N" version of the EV.
I really want this car, I could probably find a way to finance it but I have no way to charge it
I talked with an owner at the Dallas Texas Drive Electric Week car show at city hall. He said the range and efficiency (miles per KWH) are sometimes better than advertised. The eco mode seem to over achieve.
That blank is probably the auto start/stop leftover from the gas version. I have the top level Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and has a blank that is used for auto start/stop from gas version
The manufacturers whole new idea of sticking the turn signals in the lower bumper area is just amazing to me. The rear drivers now have to look for that and the bumpers are easily covered with snow etc in bad weather. Putting the signals at eye level is where they belong IMHO.
Agreed! Unfortunate that so many feel the need to copy trends even if the trend is silly, or potentially dangerous in this case.
@@theconglomerate832 it’s a ridiculous and dangerous trend that’s going to cause some accidents injuries and deaths. I can’t even begin to think how the designers thought this would be a good idea in the U. S.

Your review of the Volt helped me decide to purchase it. This review is helping me to look elsewhere. You're definitely 1 of the better reviewers out there. Make 1 with a VW ID4?
I don't get the gripes about no wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. I want my phone plugged in so that it will charge (without heating it up on wireless) while I use Android Auto. Takes what, 2 secs to plug in?
I don't mind the charging door on the front end however, It would have been nice if it was on the side. I would love to purchase Kona for a second vehicle to my Model 3 as a simple run around car.
Got mine in February. Love it.
It may look a little awkward, but having the charge port on the front seems more practical. I don't generally back into my garage which means I'd need a longer cord to reach all the way to the back of a vehicle with a rear charge port. I much prefer a front charge port.
Just an FYI, most garage charge cables are like 20-25 feet. So the placement wouldn't really impact the type of EVSE you would buy. Cheers.
I’m waiting for an Ioniq 3. I love the Ioniq 5 but it is way too big for our needs and Maltese roads. I would really prefer a dedicated EV platform and some more back seat space cause otherwise the Kona is pretty sweet.
I have an owner of 2019 EV Kona and I must say that I have been looking around for a replacement. I have been looking at various brands but this particular car seems to sit very nicely budget wise between them much more expensive Luxury EV Sinclair in the ionic five in the teslas and well above the budget priced any Chinese models. Having said that there are a few major shortcomings like the room in the back the lack of over the air update the fairly anaemic design but I must say online in the main that the build quality is excellent and material choice is pretty good and should be taken in the round given that it’s budget price. Having said that I did splurge out some money and replaced the tyres with some Mitchell e-primacy
Finally. This video was very helpful!!
I'm guessing the test car came with low resistance tires. Wouldn't better tires help with grip? Plus the battery size should help increase the weight of the vehicle and get better traction for FWD.
I have one on oder but now have doubts that I will take deliver. I isn’t available in 4wd or awd. Clearance is low which could be a problem in winter as the batteries could get damaged. Can’t adjust rear seats by moving them back. No rear air ducts. I may wait for the Ioniq 5 which may be available in Canada August/September 2024
Absolutely agree about the FWD, i have a Soul and its the same regards wheel spin, I'd like a AWD version maybe as a performance version.
Why stay tuned? That was a practice done on TV when they were selling advertisements. There's no ad here, obviously, and in fact, many youtube videos are kind of ads for the products they review.
I had one as a rental it was pretty impressive!
Thanks for the review!
PLEASE show how your review cars handle (& body roll) by taking a quick corner or do a little quick left/right slalom action every once in a while.
- Love the looks, size & ventilated seats.
- Like the quickness, but want more (1st mod would probably be stickier tires). And I prefer the front charge port. The $35K base price is decent.
- Don't like the long 47m, 10% to 80% charge time (but I guess I can lay down in the back seats & take a short nap), no quicker AWD option, traction control which allows that much tire squealing, or the road noise.
- Hate that I have to drive 350 miles (PHX to LA) to buy one.
For $43k you can get Kia EV6
I used to own a 2020 Kona Electric Ultimate. It was a decent car to drive, aside from the ride quality and interior noise (very harsh, like a Tesla). I really liked the efficiency, it was great for a daily driver, but the slow charging was a limit for long road trips. The room in the back is pretty bad. The Bolt is about the same exterior size but has way, way more room in the back, especially the EUV.
The torque to the front wheels and the crappy efficiency tires got really old really fast. I also have a Bolt and it is just about as fast to 60, but the Michelin tires that the Bolt comes with (which are better but still don’t have great grip) and the better torque management mean that it doesn’t spin anywhere near as much. The Kona comes with some Nexen tires and they have terrible grip. In the rain, you’ll spin the tires by accident at 40 mph, and trying to pull out in traffic is sketchy. Abnormally bad.
We ended up selling our Kona (for more than we paid for it) right when the battery recall was announced, but it had reliability issues as well. The electric motor had to be replaced at 9000 miles due to a ticking noise, and it was already coming back by the time we sold it at 12000 miles (took almost a month for them to replace it as well). 2 of the door lock actuators (built into the door latches) had to be replaced as well due to them getting stuck. All of this was at less than 12k miles.
A consideration about AWD in electric vehicles, especially inexpensive ones, is that it is expensive to do that. In an ICE vehicle, to make it AWD, you add a PTO to the transmission, a driveshaft and a rear differential. It’s not terribly expensive to do so, as long as the car was designed with it in mind. To put AWD on an electric car, you need to add a complete additional drivetrain. You need a motor and gear reduction, an inverter for the 2nd motor, cooling for the 2nd motor and additional high voltage wiring. In the case of the Kona, it would also have required them to design a completely new rear suspension just for the AWD electric model because a rear AWD differential is much smaller than a complete electric motor and gear reduction. Even Toyota’s tiny electric rear diffs that put out almost no power are massive compared to a typical AWD CUV rear diff (which, if we’re being honest, put out almost no power as well).
The better design is to make the car RWD with an option for a 2nd motor in the front for AWD. RWD has a reputation for being bad in bad weather, but that was mostly due to a lack of driver skill in the first place and has been almost completely eliminated with traction and stability control in modern vehicles. The new ground-up EVs are doing that, but for a compliance car like the Kona that is built with the limitations of ICE in mind, they’re stuck with the FWD.
After you sold the Kona, did you purchase a Tesla or a different EV car?
Looking forward to the new Niro to get to North America. Looks very promising.
Great review
The problem with this kona electric version tested is it has Nexen Tryes with are focussed on economy and have poor grip hence the wheels spinning.
A you tube video by a past editor of two very credible Australian car magazines on a long term review replaced the Nexen tyres with Michelin Pilot Sports 4 tyres that transformed the kona's grip, handling and breaking performance significantly with a minor drop in the range.
I note current (2022) models are now usually fitted with Michelin Primacy tyres which also very significantly improve grip and handling.
i cant wait for you to test the Cadillac Lyric
Seeing how these EV's are so heavy, do they burn through tires fast??
What model of tires does this have?
Nice review, nice car ... just a thought. the base Ford F150 Lightning is supposed to be $40k ...
Interesting that the electric version is your least favorite for external styling as it's now my favorite of them all. Super sleek and clean and futuristic imo. But,. like you I absolutely HATED that stupid charge port in the front... though, after time it just tends to fade away and overall the entire platform has grown on me. The nicieites quickly far outweigh any minor complaints about an ugly (yet convenient) charge port, at least with the LIMITED, which is the only version I would want if getting this vehicle.
I agree, I think it's the only Kinda that kinda looks good. But just kinda
The front charge port is so, so, so much nicer than a rear or side port for actually living with. Side ports are at risk of getting hit in tight public parking and rear ones require super long cables. The front port was a selling point for me living in the city and having to charge in my parking spot. My last car had a side charger and it was a pain in the ass.
I love it I just hate the front part . I’m looking or hoping for a new design for their next EV. Even Mercedes has dropped the ball with their EV designs

Why is wireless CarPlay so important? Is it that hard to plug your phone in?
I have wired CarPlay on my VW Tiguan, and wireless CarPlay on my Kona EV. The difference is huge. In wireless one, it automatically connects when you enter the car, even the phone is in your pocket, the connection is perfect and always on until you leave the vehicle. The wired one, yes it is NOT hard to plug your phone, but it is so fragile to sudden disconnection, for example in bumpy road, or when you dropped your phone during driving. So my vote is for wireless one

I have friends that own one and in warm temperatures they get a little over 300 miles range
Great review was wondering about this little EV and with my budget not including luxury pricing ($40k+, like the rest of about 90% of Americans), was really curious about it. With Hyundai opening up their EV plant in the U.S. towards the end of 2024, if they make the Kona EV here (bit of an if) it looks like they could restore the $7500 purchase credit and would put it squarely in mass market price range - basically by itself (with the Bolt & Leaf dropping out). This would also be one of the few car / suv EV's actually made in the U.S. if they do that (Tesla and VW being the other two). GM / Ford make their non truck EV's south of the border at this point.
Not to be a downer, but lots of fwd burnouts gives me concerns about trying to drive this in the wet, icy, or snowy conditions I frequently have to deal with.
Throw on some snow tires and put it in ECO mode to tame down the throttle response and call it a day!
He’s flooring it tho
It's the tires and drive modes he's using. In eco mode with traction control on it doesn't spin at all. You might get a chirp if you floor it.
I wish reviewers would talk about VESS and how annoying loud some EVs’ backing sounds are. Thanks
I got this exact same car and threw some TOYO high performance tires on it and it really wakes the car up
Thanks!
You're allowed to own this in a state that doesn't sell it?
Charging speed is painfully slow, I have a 2018 Tesla M3 long range , and trip from SLC to Vegas took me 9 hours. I can only imagine how long this will take for a usually 6 hour trip. That’s real world reality of current fast/super charging infrastructure, let along I lose 25% of range in the winter and 45 miles battery deterioration in 4 years and still going down. I am selling it now and going back to ICE
