Nice review, Tom. $62K is a lot of money for a small car like the Kona. Although electric cars might seem cheap to recharge, over the years cost of maintenance does increase and the cost of battery replacement erase initial savings. For that kind of money, I'd buy 2022 NX Hybrid.. the most anticipated mid size Suv for 2022 or Toyota Kluger Hybrid.
I don’t think I’d bother budgeting for a battery replacement. The battery is warranted to hold charge well for eight years. If you were keeping it beyond that, fine - but the radically decreasing cost of batteries means that in eight years a battery swap would almost certainly be less expensive than it is now.
@@mondotv4216 Research also indicated that the batteries were safe and efficient and yet we have rare instances of a Tesla car catching fire. I am looking forward to the next generation electric vehicles from Toyota, especially the BZ4X, to see how they stack up against Tesla.
Work has a couple of these as pool vehicles and I recently had the opportunity to take one for a road trip from Sydney to Orange and back. As my first EV experience it was a pretty comfortable ride so would likely purchase one if I was in the market for a new car. However currently looking forward to see how the Toyota bZ4X turns out, liking the styling of the concept vehicle that has been unveiled over the Kona.

It's about $15-20K too expensive. Yes I'm comparing prices to the ICE versions, but so are most consumers. The base petrol Kona can be purchased for under $30K, and an Elite is $35K driveaway. $30400 extra for the premium plus any extra on road costs. At the rated 6.2L/100km and $1.40 per litre fuel, $30,400 can buy fuel to cover 350,000km.
And that's the bottom line! A pragmatic buyer, doing the maths, will find many hybrid cars still too expensive, let alone the current EVs. Having said that, I'll be joining the que for an EV as soon as the economics of ownership gets more reasonable as there will be many advantages over ice vehicles once take-up increases.
But the EV is way quicker than an ICE version, which makes it feel like a completely different car. The Kona EV genuinely does 300 miles in UK summer with little or no effort.
It’s nearly 30k more than the standard Kona Elite but it’s not 30k more car. You also sounded like you were trying to convince yourself it’s would be a better option and excuse it’s glaring shortcomings. EV’s may be the future but that will only happen when they are a cheaper/better option over their combustion variants.
@@chasingcars I understand where you are coming from and I feel like Hyundai shouldn’t of put the Kona badge on it because like it or not it will be seen as an ev version of a Kona.
Amazing view at 10:28.. Only fleet automobiles or cars that have been heavily discounted because they can't get it off the lot will be seen on the road. Is this model going to be available in Europe?
I would delay buying a Kona Electric or E Niro until March 2022 when the prices drop because they cannot compete with the BYD brand Evs that will be able to be ordered online from July 30th and enter the Australian market from early 2022. These Evs will offer better range, faster charging capabilites and more advanced features for prices starting around the $35,000 dollar mark here in Australia.
The only Kona electrics on the road will be fleet cars or cars that have been significantly discounted because they can't get it of the lot. Just what happened to the 22 Renault Zoe's, that were sold at $32,000 instead of the $57,000 they were priced.
What evidence do you have that the batteries don't have decent longevity? You'd think degradation would be setting in by the seven year mark, when you're still eligible for a battery replacement under warranty.
Just finally got the spare tire for my 2022 Kona EV. Does anyone know how to get the spare tire to bolt in underneath? It doesn't seem to fit the space and doesn't seem to be mountable.
