  • The Hyundai Kona N is a terrific machine. Tons of a fun, pretty efficient, and packed with features.
PSA: THE 2023 KONA N IN NA DOES NOT HAVE RADAR CRUISE! THANKS CHAT!
    But it is not perfect.
And if you are going to spending over 34,000 of your hard earned dollars on one of these, you better know ALL the details. Take it from me, someone who has owned this car for 3 months, and put well over 5,000 miles on it, I know the bad.
While I still love this machine, I think it is important to highlight all the details so that you, the potential buyer, can make the best decision.
    Thanks for watching!

Who cares what other brand owners think about it? I don't understand that point at all. Of course, the other brand owners don't like it because it's a Hyundai. I guess the Type R owner that I smoked the other day hated that he got owned by a Hyundai, but that's part of the fun. I've spent the last 6 months making GTI, Type R, and a bunch of Audi owners wish they had made a different choice, hehehe. I love my Kona N.

Thank You! I’m so sick of that, “oh it’s not a ____!”, or, “It’s just a ____!”, petty bullshit! Can I just like cars like Hyundai’s or Kia’s! Yeah, sure Hyundai and Kia have had some reliability issues in the past, but if they’re making cool cars like this, then I don’t give a shit what happened in the past! As far as I know, I don’t think any N car has had any problems other than dealership problems like putting the wrong oil in the cars. And don’t get me wrong, I like the Type-R. And what’s wrong with liking both? These N cars deserve to be on the road as much as a Type-R. It makes the car industry more interesting and fun.

It's really weird how muddled globally the options are on car that was available in practically all markets, from North America to all of Europe and Asia and Australia.
It makes no sense. You had the whole things with the sunroofs, then you had that exclusive satin color in Australia. the NA Wheels vs the forged ones. Some markets just had the electric comfort seats, some could pick between cloth and the comfort electric ones. Very odd.
Mine is a '23 In Sonic Blue with manual seats, but the assist package (Blind Spot Warning and some Emergency Breaking System. BCA and RCCA ) and sun roof. It's also supposed to have Adaptive Cruise Control, not sure if that's with Radar or not. I agree with most of your points. Standard N is pretty hardcore, kind of cool when the roads are perfect otherwise...not so much, in N-Custom on Normal it's totally fine here in Germany. The backseats isn't an issue, only use them sparingly, I do wish they had just added a bit more soft touch material, not even anything like Audi level leather or alcantara, just some more soft to the touch places similar to the arm rests, would have been nice and (cost effectively) elevated the interior I think. Or maybe even some red piping/stripes to give the center console/dash area a bit more color. I'm quite glad I have no blank buttons.
Do I miss ventilated seats? No, electric seats? No. But that's a me thing, since I only adjust my seat once and leave it, and they feel fine so far. Then again I went from a '06 Ford Focus to a 2023 Kona N...so..everything is like "Holy Shit this is awesome." still. Since I only got the car a month ago.

    My thoughts/questions:
    - Great video! Glad I found another content creator with the KonaN.
    - With your coilovers, how do they interact with the drive mode system? While the factory suspension is inarguably stiff, I do appreciate that the drive modes do actually make a noticeable difference. Do you lose those adaptive, integrated features with the aftermarket coilovers?
    - I have a 2022 Kona N and my lane keep works beautifully! It’s far better than the systems I’ve had in other cars. The only issue I encounter is if I’m in a lane that borders an exit lane, offramp, etc. It will sometimes freak out and try to pull me into the new exit lane. Otherwise, it’s perfect in my vehicle. In fact, it’s so good that sometimes the vehicle will tell me to keep my hands on the wheel when they already are… I just rarely have to move the wheel on my own! Sorry yours is problematic. I would be annoyed too if I had that experience.
    - I think it’s unfair to criticize the materials of the car, as well as some of the missing features such as vent. seats, while still considering it a value for the money. You reference multiple times that when you’re paying for a car that costs 35-36k you should expect more quality. In 2022, the avg price paid for a new car in the USA was approx 46k. This car was 10k below average, so I think you have to keep that in mind when considering material quality. After all, it was built upon an economy, compact SUV. In my opinion, they chose the perfect places to skimp and the perfect places to splurge. When I’m flooring it, or leaning into a sharp turn, I’m just smiling. Smiling is all I can do when I’m driving this car. I’m not thinking about the materials for even a single second.
    - I didn’t know the 2023 KonaN got radar cruise… wonder if it’s possible to swap the unit for a 2022?

    • @MoneyShift
      @MoneyShift  Год назад +1

      Hey BarrettBritt, happy to answer!
      -Thanks for the kind words!
-If you have the opportunity to drive an N product with aftermarket coilovers (specifically a quality unit like the Fortune Auto 500), they are fantastic. The compliance over bumps, which N cars do not have, while maintaining the sporty characteristic is incredible. That said, due to the fact that you are replacing the stock suspension, fully, you lose the ability to change it's characteristic in different mods (barring you spend the big bucks and get an adaptive suspension like EDFC from Tein or something else). While I do agree, that the stock suspension does change greatly from mode to mode, the Fortune 500 setup is more comfortable, and still sporty.
-That is great! Some users do not see issues with the lane keep, but a lot of them do as well. this is a common problem in the forums, and I certainly am not an isolated case here. That said, glad you do not have that issue.
-That is your opinion, but sir I do disagree. Cars are certainly getting more expensive, with the average price to your point being in the 46,000 class. However, the competition to the Hyundai N products showcase something interesting. It shows that Hyundai clearly put their investment towards developing a line of vehicles that was fun, great to drive, and would give you smiles for all the miles. What they did not do, however, was put the money into places that you wouldn't touch/see/feel, because that money went into the driveline that gives you endless levels of happiness. A car like the Civic Si, or GTI, which you can buy for the same price as the N, is not as fun to drive. However, what they do possess is a level of quality, fit and finish, and materials, that are a league above the N products. THAT my friend, is the beauty of the segment. You pick what you value more. For you? The driving dynamics are all you need to ensure that the vehicle in your driveway is one for the long haul. For others? They value comfort slightly more than driving dynamics and stats, so a GTI would be better...etc etc etc, the fact both exist is magical
-Edit on this one. While I thought this was the case, turns out only international markets got access to the radar cruise. I am sure you could fit the gear, and get the car programmed for it, but I doubt the time/investment needed to do so would be worth it.

@@MoneyShift sorry for the late response! I’ve been in the process of moving and also just trying to use my phone less. But thanks so much for the thorough reply!
I’d miss having the OEM adjustability, however, if the fortune auto are really that great, it seems you wouldn’t need it anyways! Good to know.
As far as the features and quality, to each their own. I certainly would want both performance and interior quality, but if I had to choose, I’d go performance. At least I would at this stage in my life. Maybe in five years I’ll feel differently. There’s something for everyone, as you said, which is great for the community. Amongst the category leaders in the economical (relatively lol) and fun to drive area, it’s very hard to make a bad choice. Civic SI, GTI, type R, Golf R, Kona N, GRC, etc. all have their strengths and weaknesses but are a great collection as a whole.
Nice talking with you! I’m 100% going to be watching your content regularly.

Aside from suspension it’s almost the perfect drivers car for 35K and that’s where your money went. You have the second best DCT gearbox on the market behind Porsche PDK and lots of money went into the ELSD and chassis reinforcements.
For 35K you can get a mazda 3 turbo w a more comfy experience, nicer interior, but not as exciting and it doesnt have a multi link rear end. Also has a cramped back seat. VW does it all well but they are boring and terrible reliability (consistently outside top 10). My wife has a civic si and it’s a great car for 35K but it also has trade offs.
At 35K no car will have it all. Some will be average at everything while others chose to be great at a few things and terrible at others. You have to choose what’s important to you. The Acura Integra is 38K new off the lot and amazing to drive and amazing suspension and wonderful interior (but its also only 205 hp).
All of these are great cars but its about what you want!
If you want it all move up to the 50K+ dollar range or buy a 4 year old luxury car with miles that’s not 40% off MSRP.
The plus side of the simple interior with plastics in the Kona N is it is easy to clean. It will look way better than a sophisticated leather and Alcantara interior that looks good today but like shit when a few years go by and its been used and abused. However, I hardly know any cars at the 30-35k price range in the US w/ ventilated seats.
Thanks for the video and your efforts. Sincerely. I mean that. You are making good and informative videos for the masses.
However, and I don't mean this rudely, but, you sound spoiled. You had a choice and made your choice.

Hard cheap plastics all around so I'm disappointed to hear they are the same in the KN but at the price point I'm not entirely surprised. I think it is something I could easily get passed and adjust to even though I had a loaded Ram Sport and now have a Civic touring which interior wise were both quite nice and a lot more premium.
