- Subcompact SUVs are the smallest and least expensive SUVs on the market, notching below compact SUVs in carmakers’ lineups. If you can go without the large cargo volume and roomier back seat of a compact crossover, a subcompact SUV will save you money up front, and at the gas pump. On this video we have compiled top 8 Subcompact SUVs according to Consumer Reports.

I purchased a 22Kona SEL. It is a fun car to drive. Also great fuel economy.
I just got one I love it!!
My 2018 Crosstrek got totaled by a falling tree not long ago. Really loved how it drove and it was nice scooting up a snowy icy hill in the CO mountains while seeing Audis and Jeeps spinning out and pulled over. Didn't even have winter tires on lol. Replacing with a CX-5 though. It was just a tad too small for me overall.
get the subaru outback
Just bought a Mazda CX-30 AWD and it’s phenomenal 🙌👌👍
Love this vid! nice job SUV geek.
I got the cx-30 and love it. It handles very nice and easy to drive well worth the money. I highly recommend it.
I debating if used for time to time for Uber because the space so hard , to pick one :/
Same here, just got a cx-30 turbo. Everything about it feels refined.
It uses too much gas
Same here. GS luxury...awesome machine.
Ive heard good things about your suv. Ill definitely consider it soon. Thx
Thanks For Information...
Great video 🙏🏼
Very well done
My neighbor got a Crosstrek and loves it
I have a 2018 Hyundai Kona, and it has been a great car so far. I got the Surf Blue color, which makes it very easy to find in a parking lot filled with black, grey and white cars. I purchased the Limited with a 1.6L turbo. I drive like a grandma (even though I'm not one) so the extra pickup provided by the turbo is wasted on me. But I do love that it is comfortable and gets great gas mileage, which is usually close to 30 mpg for everyday driving, and close to 40 mpg for highway.
I’m glad I have the # 1 Subaru crosstreck 2021 limited horizon blue🤗
I have a Chevy trailblazer rs ordered can't wait to get it!!!😀
Absolutely love m kona :) highly recommend.
CX30 should be top, that 2.5L is more power than small V6 back in the days. plus interior is far superior than all others
I looked at every small SUV on the American market starting with sub 25K models. I couldn't find a single vehicle I would own, let alone buy for less than 30K.. everything felt cheap and plastic. Small underpowered cars designed and built to be as inexpensive rather than to be a reasonable quality vehicle that will last more than a few years. It wasn't until I approached $35K models that any of the cars seemed worth buying. After test driving everything up through $45K models I chose the Subaru Outback.
I gotta say the mazda sounds like #1 to me
There was a recall on 2021 Kia Seltos manufactured from Nov. 20, 2019, through Oct. 15, 2020. Has the piston oil ring problem been solved in 2022?
Looking forward for corolla cross 2022! Exactly what I need!!
Kona 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Happy 2021 Kona Ultimate owner here. It really is super fun to drive.
I appreciate its slightly smaller package that's great for city living, but might be a liiiittle tight for families. The drive train is fantastic with the turbo and DCT. Might be best HP per mileage? Definitely more inspired than others in the segment. With AWD it's more of a high sitting hot hatch that can deal with some weather than an extremely rugged off roader. But man, it really is a treat and loaded with goodies, especially on mid to high level trims. Very pleased with the value!
The motor will be a problem
It's cute for sure, but there are 😊too many Kia thefts right now.
My next door neighbor has a late model Subaru . Loves it.
Test drove the Nissan Rogue didn’t like it too much didn’t accelerate fast enough, i liked the Buick Encore but am going with a Mazda cx30 cause it’s bigger
I have a 2019 Kona petrol R.H.Drive. I have been getting 24 /27 mile per gallon on City Driving, and I tried one day with very careful driving to see how many miles I could get to the gallon on a journey of 60 miles, I ended up getting 58.9 miles to the gallon. Normal driving down Motorway etc. I get between 46 to 48 miles per gallon. I had a 220 Hyaundi before the Kona, I drove for 5 years and I never had a problem with that car, not even a light bulb failed, always started 1st push. Needless to see I will be now looking to purchase another Kona, probably a Hybrid. I have nothing to do with Hyaundi, just a customer. Hope this information helps out there. Thank you. Winifred Thompson. Lisburn. Northern Ireland.
They got it right! Crosstrek is 1 in my book!👍
Had the CX-30 but at 6’1”, getting in and out was a bit challenging and uncomfortable. The wife has a 2022 Kona Limited and I have no issues with the car and the seats are very comfortable. It’s just as much fun to drive as the CX-30 and the interior is nice, not as nice as the Mazda, but nice enough.
So if your 6’1” or taller, the Mazda may not be for you. Had the Mazda been just a tad easier to get in and out of and the seat a little better fitting, hands down the Mazda would be my choice, but it’s not.
Or just get a used cx-5, you have a better looking (both interior and exterior) car than the cx-30 or Kona, it’s reliable so if you get one with a carfax record you’re unlikely to have problems, and it’s far bigger than both.
@@alb0zfinestcx5 has the same interior for almost a decade, only recently that the infotainment got updated.
@@Rubz22 I meant yeah but who cares? It’s a sleek and stylish interior, it looks like it’s made for a car far outside it’s price range. The infotainment system has the right size screen, it doesn’t block the windshield view. Not a fan of the knob but it looks like in the new mazdas they’re having both the option of the knob and touch screen.
I'm using seltos...liked it

Awesome. I pick mine up next week. Got the amazing "Dive in Jeju" colour. Can't wait!
Forgot the best part about the new 2022 trailblazer. The msrp went up 2600 dollars for the starting price for no real reason.
That chip shortage bs, car prices outrageous
that is just not true, the base price did go up but thats because they got rid of the L base line up, just offering LS and up now. You should write for New York Times, as you word it to fit your personal narrative
One of the top sellers in the segment
Reason:🤑🤑. Sorry.
I have a kona 2018 and I absolutely love it very fun to drive 43000 miles not a screw loose
one drove by me the other day; I think the driver had a screw loose.
I have driven four-cylinder manual Nissan trucks for the past thirty-nine years, but Nissan no longer offers that combination in the mid-size truck.
My needs have evolved over the past few years, and an SUV looks quite attractive.
I checked the market and the short list was the Subaru Impreza hatchback and the Crosstrek.
I found both to be comfortable to drive, but the Crosstrek was easier ingress and egress, but still car-like driving experience.
I shopped pre-owned, but the ones that hadn't been totally dogged were priced equal to or higher than brand-new.
My red Crosstrek Premium manual is due for delivery in April, 2023.
Love all of them...that Trailblazer is probably a great city car and good on gas with the 1.3L engine!
@DWave81 my Aunt has a 2021 Encore GX too. She leased a regular Encore previously but might keep the GX!
I have 3 of the 10 cars reviewed: Camry Hybrid (2014), Corolla Hybrid (2022) and CRV Hybrid (2021). I considered, but rejected the RAV4 hybrid because it has a reputation for a poor uncomfortable ride and noisey. Currently, I have The Corolla Hybrid and CRV Hybrid. Unfortunately, the Corolla Hybrid sits too low, and access is not that easy with my knee surgeries. I consider the CRV Hybrid "the best of the best" and Im getting another one, this coming week. The CRV hybrid is quiet, comfortable, fuel efficient, and has all the safety goodies mentioned.
bless me with that RAV4 please

I have driven the smaller/older Subaru Forester since 2000. There woulda been no need for the Crosstrek and similar if the automakers would have not started making those vehicles bigger. So far, I just buy Forester model years before 2009. Love my AWD and being at a decent height.
So true, subuaru needs to make a smaller suv,, the crosstrek is just a raised Impreza
i still like my 2020 jeep renegade lattitude,no problems and fits me well
Any option with gas filled shocks ?
My 2022 Kona looks exactly like the one in the video . I discovered though I have to have a truck so I'm not going to be able to keep it . I may buy a Santa Cruz but most likely it's going to be a ZR2 Bison .
Need to see the 2023 HR-V and price, which is very important.
The 2022 HR-V is supposed to be an all-new gen design from what I have heard. The Mazda CX-3 has already been stripped down to one basic Sport trim only for 2020/2021 in the USA & is slated to be discontinued in 2022 here. Sucks because I would have bought a 2022 Grand Touring CX-3 if it was still around. Also to note, Toyota will be releasing their new Corolla Cross compact SUV/Crossover in 2022 here in the USA.
Honda scratched the plan to release all-new HR-V for 2022 model year in North America.
automobiles.honda.com/hr-v
Mazda cx30 is better than the cx3, go for it
The Cross is being released this month. I already have one reserved and should be getting it in around 2 weeks.
What about the MG ZS Excite?
The Corolla cross is being sold with a hybrid version option in our country. The prices quoted in this video makes me very jealous coz these models cost almost 2x more in our country bcoz of high taxes. The price of a small japanese suv here is equal to a bmw in the US

I test drove many subcompact SUVs before purchasing my 2021 Honda HR-V EX AWD. I preferred the seating position and power of the KIA Seltos turbo but wanted the best long-term reliability and resale value. I liked the more sporty-looking Toyota but found it to be lacking in cargo room and no AWD. I found the Mazda to be the best all-around driver's car but lacked the utility (Magic Seats) of the Honda. My local Subaru dealer had no new CrossTrack models on the lot for me to test-drive.
We bought a hrv as well but did you see that it failed the new crash test when we bought it had good safety ratings...not anymore sadly
@@cartere9981, The conditions of the Ins. Institute of Highway and Safety crash tests have changed for 2022. The impacting vehicle is now heavier and hits at a higher rate of speed. Still, the American market 2022 Honda HR-V had the lowest score of the subcompacts tested. As of today, the newly-designed 2023 HR-V has yet to be tested. No subcompact vehicle passengers are safe in a high-speed side-impact collision.
@@reaality3860 yeah only 1 small suv scored good the Mazda cx5
Can't beat those honda Magic Seats. Don't know how they aren't mandatory. If you do gardening or landscaping they are really helpful.
And that CVT will fail right after your warranty ends.
Got the 2021 Kona Limited, and it has basically everything I want out of a car. It’s shorter than my 2016 CR-V by 15 inches, making it that much easier to parallel park. Despite the compact size, it still fits 4 people without being ridiculously cramped, 5 if they’re small or kids. Storage is adequate.
The 1.6L turbocharged engine is a hoot. This little SCUV is about as zippy as a Mini Cooper and a Mazda Miata, with much larger passenger & cargo capacity. It has the same performance as a BMW X2 AWD at $10K less. Another fun fact: it’s as fast as the 1968 Mustang driven by McQueen in Bullitt.
Call me juvenile, but I like overtaking the flashy boy racer cars in an unassuming subcompact crossover.
What about long term reliability?
@@jimliu2560 I haven’t owned it long enough to speak of reliability from a personal point of view, but the reviews I read say the Kona’s reliability is equal or better than Honda’s HR-V. In any case Hyundai has 5 year / 60K bumper to bumper and 10 year / 100K powertrain warranty, which is better than everybody else in the industry.

If we're honest if you're in the market for a subcompact space should be a plus for you not a primary must have. As an overall package the CX-30 blows most of these cars away. No one thinks of the Kona or Cross Trax with a Audi or Benz entry. Just saying. Personal preference, but not sure I get the Kona design? It looks like somebody put it in a compress. Sometimes slimmed headlights work for sleakness, but in this case it looks odd maybe because of the height.

I think the Kona N-Line looks awesome from the side and rear profiles, with the body colour moulding. The front does take some getting used to, but the N-Line's LED lights look awesome. It drives great though and I'm picking mine up soon. Would have loved a CX-30 with the right package and price tag, but buying during this pandemic has been challenging to say the least. You get what you find on the lot for the price posted, take it or leave it, and the choices are slim! It's a new world.
I love the Kona design, new ones and older, both. As for pricing and availability, if you can wait it out, sooner or later they will have to get the market back in shape or go belly up. No reason we have to let them gouge us. I feel a lot of this is being done on purpose to make money. Someone always tries to profit off of others’ misfortune and it just keeps increasing as people try to get in the game and make a dollar for themselves. I’ll just drive what I have and wait it out.
I rented the Mazda CX 30 and there is literally no back seat room
I I like the mz cx 30 but waiting for 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.
Toyota production has stopped forty percent, it will be difficult to find this car.
Seems difficult to find indeed. Been checking ever since and dealerships don't seem to have it.
Trailblazer 😍😍
The Honda HRV 2023 will look like a Range Rover on the exterior, the Toyota Cross will surely fill the need of most..!
just got t-boned last week and needed to buy a new car, i test drove a lot of these cars in the video and... call me crazy but i am buying the 2021 Nissan kicks SR... as someone who is not a car enthusiast and needs to get from A-B while gas prices climb. i felt like it gave me the best value while allowing my small family a little hauling versatility. it was a fun and comfortable drive and VERY affordable.... i am confused why it was not on the list.
The smash in collisions on the sides Nissans are not the safest cars. My ex was an insurance adjuster and Nissans fold in collisions on the sides. Dangerous.
CVTs aren't good, and they're worse on the Nissans.
I have a 2019 kicks and its been a great car for me. Extremely well equipped for the price too. Its front wheel drive but that's fine for me. Being retired, If there's 6 inches of snow on the roads when I wake up I just roll over and go back to sleep, lol.
@Thou Swell Rogue sport is small enough for a subcompact SUV. I wanted to buy kicks, but people are buying them faster than the dealership receives them, so I had to settle for the more expensive rogue sport.
Overall, I'd say its ight. I was willing to exchange power for gas mileage and car price, but now I kinda like having more power.
Hyundai Kona 2022 Essential Line with AWD is my new vehicle. It's fantastic.
I hope that these manufacturers consider hybrid versions. I drive a Toyota Prius and I’m leaning toward their CUV model, once it offers as a hybrid.

Corolla cross in many countries has hybrids
Subaru offers the Crosstrek in a Hybrid version, gonna set you back in the mid-upper $30's
I drive a 2014 and also looking for a decent small suv that’s a hybrid. Husband has a 2019 rav4 hybrid and it’s phenomenal
Get a Sorento PHEV as it gets better mpg than RAV4 Hybrid and offers 3-row!
Im glad my trailblazer at least made it on the list
The Subaru Crosstrek is available with a manual transmission. This option gets rid of the engine sound complaints of the CVT. I have one and would only buy a manual, so my choices are limited.
But it doesn't have the advanced safety package, which kills it for me. The CVT also gets much better mileage.
Y'all should check into the Acura RDX - it's a 6 cylinder with great power. 2018 or older are 6 cyl. newer are 4 cyl w/turbo - not as powerful. Nice looking sub-compact SUV - try to find one with tech pkg.
One of the worst RDX generations ever. Not even SH-AWD!
I didn’t see any legroom for the rear seats in the Hyundai.
I didn’t either.
#1 Corolla Cross for long term reliability and low cost of ownership.
#2 Kona NLine For Great driving dynamics and potent powertrain.
#3 Gotta go Mazda CX-30 (Crosstrek with manual would be a close 4th, NOT with the CVT)
Sorry, no reliability on Corollacross as it is not for sale yet. If the bottom feeder has CH-R is an indicator it won't be good.
@@normt430 heh? The CC has been on sale, they’re on the road... that Dynamic force engine will be a long term reliability champion. I didn’t say anything about a C-HR. Different platform, and driveline completely. Need I say more about Toyota’s reliability track record? No, I don’t, it speaks for itself.
would this type of vehicle be a good choice as a first car for an adult driver?
Yes it would. They are priced in the same range as compact sedans, but are usually slower due to the weight, discouraging young adults from racing them. They are large enough to be safer than subcompact hatchback sedans, and the available AWD makes them less likely to be stranded in snow. The versatile cabin fits a young active lifestyle, not to mention the roof rack. I’m hard pressed to think of a better first car than a Honda HR-V at its price point. Since Hondas easily last 200K miles / 20 years with minimum maintenance, they will serve from high school all the way until the first kids get into elementary school.
@@SteelHex thank you. your last point sold me.
@@J-H0PE you’re welcome. Just remember that no car is maintenance-free. If you change the oils, fluids and parts at the recommended intervals, it’s unlikely to give you major trouble.
Did anyone notice how they didn't mention the cvt transmission on the trailblazer and they didn't mention the 9 speed automatic transmission either. What a surprise that they skipped it all together and they didn't mention that the trailblazer comes with a turbo engine either.
One thing I do like too about my AWD Trailblazer is the option to alternate between AWD and 2WD too. But it's a loud cabin, quite annoying.
Is this STEVE Watop?
The voice is unmistakable
as time goes on it's getting harder for car makers to be creative and not borrow form others for design ideas. Especially when the market is getting crowded for SUV's of any style or size. Some of the designers are lacking creativity and style for new looks. They're all heading in the same direction for headlight design with that wedge slim look. I still prefer actual shifter over push button and more of an integrated touch screen that dash mounted where it sticks up.
Honestly kia has some of the interesting looking new vehicles

How did you find the ride? I'm looking at the kona from a veloster. Is it harsh? Sporty? Or would you say it's comfortable? What about the seating position? Is it flat like a tucson? Or is it a bucket like in sportier cars?
@@akosijanjo I think the Kona is designed specifically to be a middle ground between an SUV and a sedan. As far as SUV goes, it’s definitely firmer than my Honda CR-V, but still less planted than my Civic. It also depends on the trim, my Kona Limited has 18” tires that makes it quite grippy on road curves, but feels harder than my 16” Civic.
If you want more comfort, go with a lower trim Kona that comes with 16” tires. If performance is desired, then go with the Limited or Ultimate trims. Regardless, I think any Kona would still be more comfortable than a Veloster. The upper trim Kona is designed to have more road performance than most of its competitors, but it’s still not intended to be a sports / race car like the Veloster. The driver seat has decent side support, but it’s not a deep bucket seat.
I recommend changing your thumbnail image because it doesn't belong here. The new Blazer (not Trailblazer) is certainly not a subcompact SUV. In fact, I own one & it's quite large.
I was kind of disappointed to see the Chevy Trailblazer so low on the list and only having a 3 cylinder engine. I got my first look at one a year and a half ago the day I bought my 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe. It almost made me second guess my decision due to how spacious it seemed inside and how much less it costed at the time. But, a 3 cylinder and CVT tranny just would not work for me. The Santa Fe is used to tow a small pontoon boat. I feel a lot better with a geared transmission.
I drive a base model Trailblazer at work and the cvt does fine and it’s pretty quick.
@@kevingodby6904 my wife has a Chevy Spark with a CVT. I have no complaints with how it drives as a general transportation vehicle. It’s just that I don’t know if a transmission like that is best for towing, so I prefer a geared transmission for that. But I am seeing CVT’s used more and more in vehicles that are rated for towing.

Yes! The higher ride seems to be the only appeal. They all have poorer gas mileage and shitty acceleration. Cars like the Civic and Corolla have way better performance for less money.
@@andrewn6384 not to mention how crossovers need overstiffened suspension and still roll in corners. Even a Corolla will have better handling and ride than comparable CUVs. I really cant understand the trend about them.
What about Kia Soul GT Line for 2022????????? It’s a subcompact suv. I own one and love it. Some of the cars on this list shouldn’t be on it classified as compacts on other videos
Can get a Honda, Toyota, or Subaru for about the same price as all the other brands. The Honda and Toyota are proven reliable vehicles, and the Subaru, with AWD as standard equipment, is not far behind. So, why should I consider any other brand?
Very well-said.
I had a 2013 honda crv, and needed to get a new one with less miles but I couldn't afford a used 2016 for 30,000+ dollars! I ended up getting a 2018 Equinox with 20,000 miles for 24k instead with all the bells and whistles! I did love my honda though!
Mazda is more reliable than Honda and more enjoyable to drive
@@RandySanderszt Lexus is the same company as a Toyota though.
Except no Toyota made this Top 8 list...
Of all the ones in this compact SUV class, including those not listed, the Chevy Trailblazer (1.3L only) and it's slightly tighter sister, Buick Encore GX (1.3L only) are the only ones that can be towed behind an RV. All others fail to be approved for towing. The difference between the Chevy and Buick is the Buick is more rounded body slightly decreasing interior volume vs the more square lines of the Trailblazer.
How many plp are towing their car behind a RV? Good to know for the plp that do tho.
Forgot Kia Soul. Definitely a good match up to the rest and it is in many categories, even subcompact. $17k - $29k most trims $25k or less.
They surely forget the Kia Soul.. bought a 2022 GT line and am loving it.. have more power, leg and trunk room than some SUV mentioned
He did mention it when talking about the Kia Seltos. He also mentioned a couple of other crossovers that were not included. Not sure if maybe they didn't score high enough, or if they are putting them in a different sort of "subcompact crossover" segment.
It was a top 8 list based on Consumer Reports scoring across several categories. Kia Soul either didn’t make the cut or is not considered a subcompact SUV. Not sure which myself, but to me an SUV has more ground clearance than the Soul seems to have. I see those as cars. That’s just me though.
Very best under $25K but shows thumbnail of a $47K Blazer RS.....
That Corolla cross is about to be everywhere you go. A Toyota crossover for 22k is going to be Toyotas number 1 seller
Not it follows the failure of Toyota CH-R...
Too bad Subaru doesn't have a lot of dealerships so you can get warranty work done .. Most people would have to travel to find a dealer

I want a subcompact SUV with AWD in a hybrid with 45-50+ mpg. Honda released an AWD HRV hybrid in Europe, but not in North America. 😡 So mad. I've been waiting for decent hybrid milage with AWD since 2016. These car manufacturers need to step up.
Subaru Crosstrek!
Gonna sorely miss the space of the HR-V when I switch over to the upcoming Kona N but I'll be damned if double the hp isn't a fun tradeoff lmao
Why did u get Kona?
@G C oh ok. Idk small Turbos long term are a nuisance
@@moeanthony9308 why do you say that about the turbo long term pls
explain a bit?
@@indranidasgupta8982 indrani Dhanyvaad/thanks for asking. The whole reason for Turbos these days is for gas savings and more power. There many many complaints of these Turbos overheating and causing further damage to other parts of the engine including leaking. I highly advise, naturally aspirated engines. Do some research you will see. Be careful of Hyundai and GM Turbos.
The less moving parts the better. Port or Dual direct and port injection all day. Only Turbos I would trust is Lexus
The Kona at twice the size would be excellent!
Except, that's Hyundai and that is an acceptable brand.
Sir which country buying the most SUV car's in the world ?

Pretty sure the 2022 HRV hasn't been released yet in the U.S. and what is shown in the video isn't even the new model released in other countries. Could be wrong.

It is the new model for US. I think Europe & Asia are getting the updated model.
For the US, 2022 is not updated much. We’ll must have to wait for 2023 models for updates.

Can you elaborate more about about what year and trim is your Kona? I'm really leaning towards one compared to the others.
It's a 2018 Limited. Sonic grey. It has blind spot monitoring, LED headlights and LED DRL, sunroof, roof rails, hill descent control, Android Auto and Apple Carplay, plus a number of other features. The Limited and above comes with the 1.6 turbo, which to me is a must. I'd definitely recommend getting one. Get a preowned one like I did, but do it soon as the price of even used cars is still on the rise. I bought mine for around 17 thousand in January, but if I bought it now it'd be around 20.
Like hell its under $25k.
The cx 30 is a zippy fun suv to drive and the handling is phenomenal
Not really very good ride.
More power more trips to gas pumps no thanks
