To those asking, I have no idea how long these keep in the fridge. They keep forever in the freezer. But, if you're making 12 at a time, I don't think shelf-life will be an issue!
For all you calorie counters such as my self, I made this and added honey roasted almonds, pecans and a few macadamia nuts, and put this into a 9x9 pan totaled 1,515 calories for the whole pan. Now. Cut that into 6 large bars? That's just about 250 calories per bar. Not too shabby.
Instead of using coconut to combine the ingredient, You can use tahini (sesame past). Tahini and dates go very well together. In middle east, tahini is not only used in savoury dishes, but is used in sweet dishes. One simple recipe, you can stuff the dates with any type of nuts (ground or whole nuts) spread some tahini one top, and you'll have an easy and healthy recipe.
This is great! I've been making these for years! There are also so many variations you can come up with using this. My favorite flavor was using Mexican vanilla extract, with cocoa powder, fresh toasted peanuts, coconut oil, and chopped up Mexican cacao nibs. To enhanced the chocolate I skip the salt and the liquid I add a splash of balsamic vinegar and dark soy sauce... it really does something!
Chef, your delivery and tone of voice are perfect for making me want to cook. You put me at ease. I've made a few of your recipes and have had great success. These are next.
I don't comment often on youtube but I wanted to let you know that I really appreciate this video. I actually am vegan since about a year or so. I still watch your videos because I like your skills and your wit. The part about the hybrids in the parking lot made me giggle. Thanks for this recipe and including something vegan :) Not all of us are preachy and we very much enjoy some good food just as everyone else.
+Jacqueline Pham Are you 12 years old? Where exactly was he hating? He stated a fact, which is a true one. This generation is full of insecure self-absorbed people who were raised in a bubble. God forbid, one has an opinion different than theirs...... If you do not like the freedom of speech, go to Cuba!
Not really healthy actually with all the sugars. Beside health is not what this channel is about, its good food. You are wondering into a sex shop expecting to find children toys.
I seriously don't know why people are hating on Chef John for his voice. So what he raises his voice at the end of his sentences? You don't come here to judge him on his voice! People come here for his food, his humor, and his personality. If you simply just come here to judge him on everything, then just piss off! Chef John is perfect the way he is, and he does not need people hating on his voice.
I just made these with my mom, so good!! The only thing was, we have a smaller food processor so the recipe itself was too big for it. The recipe is a good amount, so next time we'll split the ingredients and do two small batches so it gets mixed easier.
thanks you so much i love your channel you're cooking style is fun and informative I've been a viewer for years now. and I just wanted to say you doing and awesome job inspiring new chefs like myself.
Thank you so much Chef John you just took me back to my childhood and helped me with my own daughter who has an aversion to a lot of food and needs a meal replacement it just so happens this has everything that she can't eat thank you so much
I am definitely making those this weekend, they are exactly what I've been looking for! by the way there is something very soothing and hypnotic about your voice
hello chef John. I was wondering if you had any recipes for easy to swollow foods. I suffer from ALS and looking for a nice creamy savory recipe. I watch all of your videos and would love to see if you could come up with a meal that I didn't have to chew very much. Thank you for all the delicious meals I can cook for my family.
increďble. simply incredible. and none of that added sucre either. another great video Chef John, you inspire a kitchen disaster to take a chance; perhaps create a few edible mistakes 😁
Can you do a high-protein bar Chef John? I was going to try your recipe and simply substitute some protein powder in place of the cocoa, since this isn't a baked product.
Thanks Chef! Another great video. On a side note, I ordered some SFQ BBQ sauce for summer pulled pork activities. I am sure it will be outstanding! Cheers!
CJ i read that dutch-processed [ie treated with alkali] cocoa actually removes much of the flavonoids and antioxidants, so ive been trying to only buy high quality cocoa that is NOT dutch or treated with alkali...
Hi Chef John, do you know Turkish Halwa ? I found a way to do it, but I was wondering if you could do your own spin on it. Thanks and great video as always :)
you can find the dates at middle eastern grocery stores or fruit markets. I live in Detroit, We have a lot of those here. I always see the medjool dates at these places.
ooh i wish i could eat these they sound yummy. but I'm allergic to half the ingredients. lol. I thought it was another bar i could just take the nuts out but its mostly nuts and coconut( which is both what I'm allergic to). but it looks soooo good....Worth the hospital trip? haha love your recipes.
I think you can also make Protein Bars pretty similar to this. I made a couple a few years ago from another channel called Scooby something. (a guy without a shirt on talking lol) they turned out pretty nice as well and was pretty easy to do.
Try using a tin can of something to steamroll the mix flat. It should help speed things up so you only need to press the edges flat with your fingertips.
Looks like a good recipe, I will have to try it. I do have one question, maybe you mentioned it and I just missed it, but how long is the shelf/fridge life of this product once made up? Also really like the rustic look when you package this energy bar. Great video, thank-you so much.

You're hurting the nuts, you monster :(

Chef John - why are you so freakin awesome?! Your humor always adds to my day man!
I made this today using dried cherries instead of dates and WOW is it good! Thanks Chef!!

"try to look for those markets that has a lot of hybrids in the parking lot" lol you couldnt be more right on that!
Hybrids in the parking lot...best comment ever!
I had to restart video I was laughing so hard!
I was in that store today.
And...uh...we drove there in a, um...hybrid.
Well, %&*@.
That Cayenne fake-out. A million people's hearts skipped a beat.
subbed for two years and this is his first healthy recipe.
it's his signature ingredient :)

You have no idea what "healty" means.
+Jacqueline Pham who's hating?
Sometimes I wonder if Chef John is a distributor of cayenne. =D

I love the way he adds cayenne to everything. It reminds me of how I used to add random spices to my group's food in a high school cooking class.
In Arizona coconut oil is ALWAYS liquid in summer time. :p
I did this before i know it was a thing!! So proud of myself, I didn't use cocoa powder though i just covered the top with dark chocolate.
I love when my dates are nice and moist.
I just made these with my mom, so good!! The only thing was, we have a smaller food processor so the recipe itself was too big for it. The recipe is a good amount, so next time we'll split the ingredients and do two small batches so it gets mixed easier.
Crippling depression was going to set in as cayenne was not included but all of that changed for the better! Thanks Chef John😉

These look unbelievably good.
I've been making something similar for a while, I use less nuts and add oats though! :)
I am definitely making those this weekend, they are exactly what I've been looking for! by the way there is something very soothing and hypnotic about your voice
Chef John to stop the sticky or tacky, roll the bar in either oat flour or rice flour. before wrapping.
Yum!!!!! I like the espresso addition.
These remind me of Larabars which are my favorite. Looks good and easy to make 😊
This is very easy. Everything is available here where I live. Thanks chef.
Hi Chef John! Just wanted to thank you for your vids, it really does brighten up my day (I can't really explain why lol
"Once our date is seeded"
Was that a subtle yet intentional innuendo?
Yes.
+Food Wishes Hehe
+Food Wishes god, you're literally the greatest.
this channel is amazing, and your voice makes cooking so much better, keep up the good work
"nice and moist"

Sorry, but other than our soup recipes, I'm not sure!
His slow cooker beer pot roast is easy to eat! Any slow cooked meat and veggies recipe is very easy to eat if you ask me.
I made these yesterday and they are delicious. I made a few bar size and the best balls.
Wow an energy bar that looks like it tastes good. I'm going to make this at Christmas and give them away. :) Thank you.
it's really amazing, how long can we store it? I mean the shelf life and where to store it. India has quite warm climate..
it should be awesome with oats and raisins i hope i can give it a try
That Hybrid joke was very well executed ChefJohn
10/10
Love your videos, chef John! Greetings from Panama
I. love your voice it is soothing plus you make me laugh which is a good thing. Keep doing what your doing your great.
Wow those look absolutely magical
increďble. simply incredible. and none of that added sucre either. another great video Chef John, you inspire a kitchen disaster to take a chance; perhaps create a few edible mistakes 😁
This video is so soothing and enjoyable, I think I found my favourite choco bar recipe!
so if i rolled them up in a ball and sprinkled them with salt, would they be chocolate salty balls?
Totally Paleo!! I am so making these!
Can you do a high-protein bar Chef John? I was going to try your recipe and simply substitute some protein powder in place of the cocoa, since this isn't a baked product.
What can you substitute for the coconut oil? I am allergic. Luv your videos, Thank you.
I tried them today the are super awesome thanks food wishes
i was at the store with my mom today, and she gave in to getting me the fancy chocolate protein bars that are so unhealthy but i love them so much
This is energy instead of protein bars, but yeah, the ones in the store are full of corn syrup, hydrogenated soybean oil, sucrose, etc.
i love covering homemade energy bars with dark chocolate! soo good
Thanks Chef! Another great video. On a side note, I ordered some SFQ BBQ sauce for summer pulled pork activities. I am sure it will be outstanding! Cheers!
It is so cool! I just wonder how long can it sit in refrigerators ? I will make tons of it if it can preserve long enough
Those are perfect for people like me ( barely any energy left, haha)
I may finish half of those dates before they head to processor
thank you for this!!! I can't wait to try this technique out.
Chef John I love u! My hubby has been asking for energy bars forever! Pls more innovative n healthy recipes pls mucks!
Would this go well with protein powder also and make them protein breakfast bars maybe? May try that and find out for myself!
CJ i read that dutch-processed [ie treated with alkali] cocoa actually removes much of the flavonoids and antioxidants, so ive been trying to only buy high quality cocoa that is NOT dutch or treated with alkali...
cinnamon would probably go well with this, definitely will try.
Chef John, I love your channel! I swear that in every video you say something that will make me laugh! Nice recipe by the way! :) :) ♡
Thanks chef. I have coeliac friends who will enjoy this.
Your voice and music raises my energy ☺️
Absolutely fantastic! I can't wait to try this recipe out! Thank you :D
This is awesome :) Thank you for making a recipe like this!
I'm making these tomorrow! Thanks Chef!
These look divine! Thank you!
I would love to see you make Energy Bars. for everyone that is allergic to nuts.
Can I request a recipe for some Cullen Skink? A beautiful Scottish haddock and potato soup, perfect for Winter times or as a hearty lunch :)
Hi Chef John, do you know Turkish Halwa ? I found a way to do it, but I was wondering if you could do your own spin on it.
Thanks and great video as always :)
That looks delicious! Might try black figs in there, yum!
Thanks for the vegan recipe, Chef. I can't wait to put some chocolate, salty balls in my mouth.
nice for ramadan. thank u
can you sub the coconut and almonds for hazelnut and something to replace the coconut
Chef John, you never fail to both entertain and teach me something
you can find the dates at middle eastern grocery stores or fruit markets. I live in Detroit, We have a lot of those here. I always see the medjool dates at these places.
This looked soo good! I'll definitely be tryinf this soon
ooh i wish i could eat these they sound yummy. but I'm allergic to half the ingredients. lol. I thought it was another bar i could just take the nuts out but its mostly nuts and coconut( which is both what I'm allergic to). but it looks soooo good....Worth the hospital trip? haha love your recipes.
You got me with the late addition of the cayenne. I was like WHAT? No cayenne? Wait a minute! Phew. I feel better now.
Could this be done with figs replacing the dates or no? Could they be added in tandem with the dates without throwing off the consistency?
This goes in the best, easy, and most awesomer category.... You don't have that. But I'm starting a thing.
I love this recipe soooo much!!!!
Love this, going to make them this weekend.
Totally gonna make these.
Totally going to make these. Thanks chef!
Do you need a date brother?
Yes please.
Okay, wait until Iftar.
I can't wait to make this. I just bought a processor that has not been used. ;)
As someone who can't digest white sugar (aka sucrose) I really appreciate this recipe!
These videos are just awesome! I've learned so much from you chef, thank you! You rock!!
Great recipe!
All it lacks are golden raisins, white chocolate chips, and some honey - all stirred in at the end.
Chef John is such a lowkey Savage. Love this guy
I think you can also make Protein Bars pretty similar to this. I made a couple a few years ago from another channel called Scooby something. (a guy without a shirt on talking lol) they turned out pretty nice as well and was pretty easy to do.
Oh, man do those look good!!!
Most important ingrediant in energy bar is Kayan pepper..got it!!! '3'
Love this man, thank you so much for making me smile today. Your so refreshing and full of good vibes.
Try using a tin can of something to steamroll the mix flat. It should help speed things up so you only need to press the edges flat with your fingertips.
I definitely gonna try this!! Thank you for the recipe~
"lots of hybrids in the parking lot" well played chef, well played.
I love your videos Chef John! u have such a good sense of humor and are just hilarious! I love how u don't take things too seriously! 😁😁
😍 Thank you chef John!
Looks like a good recipe, I will have to try it. I do have one question, maybe you mentioned it and I just missed it, but how long is the shelf/fridge life of this product once made up? Also really like the rustic look when you package this energy bar. Great video, thank-you so much.
I need to make these asap!
