Hahaha, awesome plan! I just tried to get my MR2 started today. The previous owner had let it sit with no spark plugs in the engine! Bastard. I'll have videos on it soon enough.
Can you imagine, if you could just go down to Toyota and order a new one right now. You wouldn’t get it for 6 weeks but who fucking cares? It’d be glorious!
I drive my MINT condition 1989 MR-2 around very upscale Malibu, and Calabasas California all the time. Surrounded by Uber-expensive exotics left and right, my little MR-2 ALWAYS gets looks, photos taken of it, and questions asked about it ALL THE TIME! (most people say MR-2s were driven hard, and trashed, and can’t believe how good mine looks!). …….I’ll never get rid of it!
Amazing that this little thing didn’t get more acclaim, I’d say it was the coolest Toyota of the 80s, over the All-Trac ST165 Celica and MKIII Supra. 90s brought stiffer competition from the ST185 + 205 (JDM market) and MKIV Supra, but this was still the gem of the 80s.
Most of Toyota's sports cars from the 80's and 90's needs more love. I'm sick of people thinking that the A80 Supra is the only Toyota worth a dang when they actually had a pretty impressive range of sporty cars back in the day. Me? I can't decide if the if the MR2 W10 (Seen in this video) or Supra A70 is my favorite Toyota.
@@jamiecinder9412 : While the A80 Supra and the AE86 are definitely the popular kids on the block, my soft spot are the '80s Toyota sports cars. The A70 Supra is what got me into cars as a little kid, and I remember being equally wowed by the AW11 MR2. My goal is to collect the 'Three Brothers'; I already have the Supra and the ST165 Celica GT-Four. I just need to find a good MR2; preferably supercharged but if I can't find one an N/A 4AGE wouldn't be a buzzkill. :)
@@Alltracavenger Did you ever play Gran Turismo, by any chance? That racing game is usually the reason why people like JDM cars from the 80's and 90's, in my experience.

@@Schlabbeflicker Idk it depends on the car, my 3800sc fiero with autotragic is super fun because it's consistent at a stoplight but I do sometimes wonder how much more fun it would be with a 5 speed, the only manual I've driven is 6 speed 99 firebird formula and it's always so much fun to drive, for a driver's car like the AW11 though I agree manual is the only choice
YES THANK YOU! I love the first gen MR2! I am literally buying a beautiful mint condition one today. Doesnt have a motor right now but body is spotless with no rust. Luckily I have a spare 4age motor laying around
Oh there will be lots of videos of it coming on my channel. Especially this spring and summer. Right now it just got covered in two feet of snow! Keep an eye out though, I'm gunna show this car a lot of love.
THAT is one of the hottest cars Toyota EVER made! Just like GM, when they stopped making the FireBird, Toyota made a BAD decision by not continuing this car!. THAT body style was the best of the line. When it got all rounded off, it lost its 'fun, odd, and turn your head' style.
I had a 86 mR2 and just loved it. Many reviews said that the steering was too sensitive, I also found this. although I knew how to adjust for it. The trick is to inflate the tires UP TO ONLY 2 psi with the front being the lowest. I settled on 1 psi high on the rear and 1 psi low on the front to minimize tire wear as I had expensive Bridgestone Potenza's on it - cant remember the exact model. I bought it at 4 yrs old with less than 25,000 miles on it plus it was stored properly for the colder weather and winter. I put 100% Synthetic lubricants throughout and an oiled full flow air filter. 0 - 60 always came in at 8.4 seconds although I figure that I could have done better as I always dropped the clutch at around 5,000 to 6,000 RPM. Ya the tires were expensive. At 6,000 RPM to 7,000 Rpm the tail would slide sideways back and forth, as I would ease up on the throttle, it would start moving like a freight train at first then it would take off pinning me in the seat. On a deserted freeway I put metal to the petal and stopped this at 124 MPH although I had 500 RPM to go. It would feel very normal and safe up to 80 MPH(I call this the sweet zone) Maintenance wise it was neat bullet proof as the only unexpected repairs were the water pump and part of the exhaust of which both were not expensive. Jet black and a good looker. I am from Canada and when Toyota started importing them here - believe it or not every one was sent down to a custom shop in Oregon which installed opening and removable sun roofs. No question about it - It was one of the best vehicles I ever had and without question the most enjoyable and fun.
I bought a 88 mr2 in 89, i loved it , that car sung going around curves, unfortunately, it didn't last long, until a truck ran a light and totaled it, thank god i walked away, but i got the coolest supra in 90, memories!
I have a beautiful s2000 that I love, but a few years ago bought an 89 supercharged mr2 that had been sitting on flats behind a relatives home. It’s hard for me to believe, but now I find myself getting into it more than the s2000 when I want a fun tops off drive. Wonderful car.
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials just bought an auto for 1600. Engine is perfect with 67 k- 100k miles and tranny is good. About 400 later it runs skooth and I'm daily driving the thing 😁 I do wish it was a manual but it actually isn't as bad as I thought it would be

I love both. mr2 aw11 any day of the week. They are both underpowered but the aw11 has SOOOOO much character. The frs has plenty charater....but not like best buds for life character.
Some told me that the Supercharged with the Auto box was the fastest production car from 0 - 30 MPH I took this with a grain of salt. I was at my auto repair shop waiting for the bill, and was reading a car magazines when I came across this vehicle and was I kinda surprised when that clearly stated the same thing. Crazy what inflation does! $16,418 for a car like this would be a dream, especially in brand new condition! One day Imma get my hands on a car like this, whether it be the MR2, the 86 hatchback, or a celica GTS! I just hope they will be a thing in 6 years.
Does anyone else think they went supercharger over turbo to avoid some of that snap-oversteer you’d be more likely to get with a lagging turbo? Or was it due to cooling issues being mid-engine? Or did they just want to experiment?
AW11s tend to actually run on the colder side with all their extra plumbing. I think it was simply a response thing. Even cars like the Supra and newer MR2s were only lightly boosted for response reasons, the Supra with a twin turbo system, and the SW20 with a twin entry single turbo. So a supercharger likely made more sense given this was still the 80s and the short wheelbase demanded a responsive engine. A GT car could've made do with a turbo for stright line stuff, but it would've been inconsistent for the AW11's cornering needs.
The drivetrain was straight off the Corolla FX, but you need a lot of platform specific parts such as cooling components, fuel lines which aren't shared with other models. That's why prices are so high compared to the Corolla.
+auchucknorris Drifting a mig-engine car? Because Snap over steer doesn't make it dangerous enough... Obviously, no that would be dumb to do. Even if you are Chuck Norris.
