My parents forbade me from buying a car when i was younger. They thought i'd crash it or something. this was in 2007 or so, and i found an aw11 on craigslist. I paid 1000 for it, and parked it down the street so my parents wouldn't know. I miss that car, so much. I wish i had never gotten rid of it. by FAR the most fun car i've ever driven.
I bought my aw11 without my parents knowing either and I parked it at my friends house for a few weeks till I eventually came to the conclusion my parents had to know. I didn't even have my license yet! I was able to drive it for a few years until my ignorance laid the engine to rest. It's been in my driveway for a year. Won't run again until I have enough funds to get a swap.
Yeah I got a 89 MR2 GT and the engine is dead, running on 3 cylinders instead of four at 357,900 miles, piston rings blew on cylinder 3, I’ve been wanting to rebuild the engine myself to learn because it would be my first rebuild but at the same time I kinda wanna swap it with a better engine, problem is funds, I’d either swap it doing the k swap or rebuild the 4AGE with high performance parts.
5:15 That part when Mr Regular explained why he bought it, sometimes that's all the reason you need. It could be a supercar or just a banged up family saloon, if it's special to you then you'll enjoy every single moment with it. True car enthusiasts don't just go for the flashiest or fastest thing out there, just the one that means the most to them ^^
Many of us TOTALLY called this LOL Idk why but I feel so genuinely happy that you got an MR2, I usually don't feel this way for you tubers mainly because I don't know them personally, but for you it's different, I honestly feel extremely happy for you and I hope this car does you well. You out of everyone, deserved this, enjoy my youtube friend, enjoy
i feel the same way, because every time he's ever mentioned an mr2 he's always gushed and spoke about it with reverence that you knew was genuine. I'm so glad he finally found a good aw11.
+Natheria since Mr. Regular started making videos both my best friend and I got AW11s, him an 88 and I an 86. We've known he loves them the whole time and tbh we are stoked for him too
Shameless plug for the vaporwave/synthwave track I made out of Mr. Regular's "do something with this drum loop" video =D soundcloud.com/honoblue/regularwave
Mr. Regular, with all due respect please have fun with that car. The thing is not much more than metal, rubber, plastic, and glass. These things can be repaired, if cruising it makes you happy then by all means cruise. What I'm trying to say is don't feel scared to have fun because it's rare, or because it's nice. Don't worry about those arbitrary details, have fun.
Cory Halvorson The AW11 is more then the sum of it's parts, not just rubber steel and glass, +if you crash it insurance isn't going to bother fixing it, and you'll be hard pressed to find another good one in good condition. As an MkI-a owner myself, 'I get' why he wants to play it safe, Heck I got myself an R1 so I can drive my AW11 less and use the gas money I save towards quality time at the track with my MR2.
Considering how clean the thing is, I'd say if he REALLY wants to get dirty with one, just buy a dirty one. They're pretty common as far as 80's japanese sports cars go, the only rare ones are the untouched, uncrashed beauts like this one. Just go buy somebody's project car for $2000 and then drive that thing till it's totally dead
"It's just so clean, I don't want to do anything to it. I hardly drive it" As an owner of two '85 MR2s, this makes me sad. The MR2 is a car that very well deserves to be driven. You can still maintain it at the current quality and drive it as much as you like..
Most definitely true. I bought my '87 N/A last July running and driving alright enough but in a state of mechanical neglect and on cut springs. I've been daily driven it every day since I've owned it, save for probably about two weeks total where I parked it and borrowed one of the family spare cars (once because my starter went out and I didn't have a replacement on hand, and once because I broke motor mounts and didn't want to do any more damage until I was able to replace them). 10 months later and I've gotten it running and driving the best it's ever been since it's become a part of my life. With every thing that I've fixed and/or upgraded, it's only become a better daily with time and my car. And I do drive it hard as well as lightly/casually
It depends on what your intentions for the car are. I bought mine with the intention of driving it a lot in summer. But I modified that as I saw its value skyrocket upward several thousand dollars right after I bought it. Now that I have decided to keep it long term, I will just enjoy it and maintain it the best I can.
Being the guy that let you review my AW11...i could not be more happy for you. I recall very well how excited you were to review my MR2, so i know how special of moment this is for you. Congrats man!
I've always been totally fascinated by mid-engine cars, which are exotic and weird and almost unheard of in the poor parts of the midwest. When I was a kid, my dentist had a Delorean. I thought the MR2 and the Fiero were rare, special cars. And now they are.
Just bought an MR2 AW11 with my best friend for $800 with no engine. We're going to attempt to put in a Camry V6 and hope to God it fits. It looks like love at first sight and I can't wait to turn the key.
@@trv88r So here's all that happened! My buddy never ended up putting an engine in it but I ended up buying my own red 85 MR2 and fell even further in love. I had to sell it due to time and money in August of 2018. A lot of time went by and just this morning I received a text from the guy I sold it to. He's moving to Washington in two days and has no where for it to go. He said it's either going to me or to the Scrapyard. It's coming home to me tonight.
This video reminded me so much of how I feel about my car. I bought a 1996 Ford Probe off a craigslist auction and it belonged to an old man. That car is the embodiment of a 90's car. it looks fast even though it's slow, it's too heavy for a car that size and it's FWD it tries to be futuristic even though it's old school, heck with pop up headlights and swirly 3 spoke rims you can't get more 90's than that. Driving that car brings me back to my childhood and always puts a smile on my face. With 76 K original miles and amazing condition I intend to drive that car as long as I can.
Gotta correct you, the Probe is certainly not heavy for its size. Even in its day it was respectably light weight, it was about identical to the same year Prelude Celica Corrado and even the 2nd gen MR2! Oh, and the base Eclipse. A car that got into mustang Camaro territory real quick. And yours was a 4 cylinder so it was actually lighter than the GT by nearly a hundred pounds placing it lighter than much of the competition.
About time you picked up a AW11 Mr.Regular!!!! If any of you guys watch Regulars review on the AW11 he absolutely adore this car! And basically talked about how great it is lol Glad you were able to get it.
Welcome to the world of AW11 ownership. I have to admit your palpable enthusiasm for everything that is the mr2 was one of the factors that really made me want to not give up on mine. Thanks Mr. Regular.
OMGOMGOMGOMG! I'm about to get a red AW11 with 90k miles myself. It's been a dream car of mine for a couple years, and I'm so excited for the experience.
you'll love it, I wish I had some more cash laying around I would pick up a AW11 SC for a 2nd car, but my SW20 turbo will do for now :) both models are unique in their own way.
I can see RCR cruising with this MR2 down I-476 toward the PA Turnpike Superhighway, listening to FM Attack "Sleepless Nights" wearing mirrored aviator sunglasses and a pastel blazer.
Nice Mr. Regular! I am the 2nd owner of my 1990 Eclipse GSX believe it or not. The car was pre ordered in 1989 paid for in cash and delivered to the guys house by truck. It came with the bill of sale, owners manual, repair manual, and every record of work. I mean sure the car has 169k miles on it now but one owner 27 year old car. It's so nice to see that someone else found a gem
This was great! My second car was a white 88 Toyota MR2, almost identical to this one except it had black (and I think more basic) interior. This car looked special. People thought it was a lotus or something. I loved everything about it except 1. My T-tops leaked like crazy and 2. When the car was parked on a hill, the transmission would slip so if you didn't set the parking break REALLY bad things happened. Mine was super clean otherwise, until some asshat without insurance nailed me in the side and I stepped down to an old CRX I bought for $1500 bucks... God, I miss that car though. Please... for my sake... listen to "In the air tonight" and drive super fast at night. Every.Chance.You. Get. Thanks, Mr Regular.
Mr. RCR, when it comes to the noises an AW11 makes, you haven't lived until you have opened the T top and downshifted in a tunnel. My dad still has his 88 supercharged T top, they are truly gems
I got a 2003 MR2 with pretty much the same condition you have. I got it at 69000 miles 6 months ago. Everything is clean with only rust on the rear exhaust, and the leather seats have begun to crack. Beyond that, Everything works and it is so much fun to just drive and enjoy.
No, my friend...sit behind the wheel, gaze out over the wraparound gauge cluster, and put your hand on the pistol-grip shifter, and you know. She's not a spaceship. She's a fighter jet.
A buddy of mine in highschool had one of these, there was nothing else like it in the entire town. It had the "I'm leaving 5th gear now" issue, so he used a bungee cord to hold it in place. That thing was fun...good times...
Everyone has that one car from their childhood that they'll always look at with a smile, that will take them back. And I love when people talk about them because you can hear that passion in their voice. Mine is a third generation 1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS Convertible. My grandfather would take me out in that car always. I remember being only 3 or 4 years old in a booster seat in the back of that car driving up and down the canyon road that we'd have to take to get to his house from where my school was. It's not the best looking or performing camaro, but that car takes me back, and it takes me back hard
Owned an AW11 B for 11 years. 1990 just 37k miles. Mint condition. Its all about the 4AGE engine and the way it pulls and sounds after 4500 rpm. Addictive as hell. A couple of videos of my car buried on my channel.
damn. I know someone who has a 3s swap with dual charged...(super charged and turbo). there is no trunk what so ever, cause that where the turbo piping fans and intercooler. nutty.
Congrats on the new car, Mr. Regular! I feel the same way about the MR2. A car I have always wanted, and just knew I had to own one someday. I was lucky to find a red '85 early this year for a steal of a price. Yours even has the exact wheels I want to get! Good luck with it.
I totally get that! For some reason all my life any time I saw an MR2, like randomly at a Walmart, I had to go over and check it out. Didn't think I would be able to own one for a long time, but now I do. :D
Man I miss my 86 mr2. Mine was similar but black with 220k miles and rusted out. Bought it for $600. Spent $200-300 to get it inspection ready. Drove it for a few months till one of the front suspension bar mount broke and the front passenger wheel and hub popped around while driving. The wiper linkage broke before that so I just used rainx 😂. Loved that shifter. I don’t remember the terrible drone noise. I do remember people’s headlights being right in my “backseat” at night. Loved that car, thanks for sharing!
God, this video makes me miss my MR2. I'm gonna fix you up someday, babe. As soon as I have *literally anywhere* to work on you. I'm coming home, I promise. This Volt I drive is practical but boring, sensible but devoid of spirit. I want to come home. I will come home. We'll get there, babe. We'll get there. Even though you're old and rusty and fading and you've got a lot wrong with you, I can rebuild you. As soon as I have a garage.
@@Lysergic_ Y'know how Pablo Escobar had tent cities to manufacture coke in the Jungle? Kinda like that, except what we're making it more addictive and dangerous than cocaine. It's called snap oversteer my friends.
I still regret not rescuing a mostly mint, totally complete AW11 from a local pick and pull yard. Even if the engine was shot, it didn't deserve that fate.
SkuzzyJ Most pick and pull yards pretty much refuse to sell you full cars anyway; at least that's what the locations near me emphasize. Something about the government deeming their vins purely for parts/scrap. Very sad thing when you see a near mint 1983 Toyota 4x4 sitting in a parts yard giving you the "puppy eyes", and the only thing you can do is watch it slowly get ripped of its parts and later crushed into a soda can.
Reminds me of my childhood... My dad promised to get me a car, and we went junkyard crawling. I stumbled across a black AW11 that looked to be in really good condition and asked if we could take it home, and he said no JUST because it had an automatic transmission. :/ Like, it obviously needed some kind of repairs, I think the engine was ruined and there might have been some suspension damage, but the body was complete and replacement parts should have been cheap and plentiful. Ended up with an '88 Ford LTD, automatic funny enough, which he later sold without my permission. We don't talk anymore, lol.
I am so happy you were able to find such a clean MR2. And for the same reason that you wanted a MR2 I want all of the 90s Japanese cars as well. As a kid a saw a S13, S14, Supra AND a NSX all parked in front of 1 store while on the way to buy (you guessed it) new pants xD. And OMG I need to own all of them and park them next to each other in a garage.
My freshman year in college (1987), my girlfriend had one of these. I stayed with her for months longer than I should have JUST to drive this magnificent machine. You, sir, have excellent taste.
man. you nailed this one. your feelings on this car are the exact reason i bought another del sol. nobody else gets it but me, and nobody else needs to get it.
This is crazy. I just bought an 87 mk1B mr2. Its clean and low mileage and perfect exactly how it is. And Ive told all of my friends that I'm not going to modify it or race it or send it down a mountain at 90mph. I told them I'm gonna cruise through national forests in july with the t tops out, and rummage through thrift store bins for cassettes so I have more than just my Wonderwall tape to listen to. I'm going to travel across the country. I'm going to go places and see things in this car and I'm going to enjoy every second of it with my silly ridiculous space wedge. And then I watched this, and you said almost the same damn thing. These cars have a certain effect on people, I swear. Its just a wholesome piece of machinery, through and through.
There are more differences between A and B. Reinforced block with 7 ribs instead of 3. Stronger crank. Different cam lift durations. The list goes on but you will learn the i̶n̶t̶r̶a̶c̶a̶c̶i̶e̶s̶ idiosyncrasies of owning a stock 30 year old car soon enough . Beautiful hardtop though. Welcome to the club. You're gonna be smiling a bunch.
I have an '89...I too am the second owner... I bought it from a 30 year Toyota man in upstate NY a few years ago. This is the second Mk1 MR2 I've owned. I had an' 86 that I bought new on Guam while in the Navy. I thought I may have overpaid for the '89... I paid $11T for it. But I am realizing that I may have bought one of the best examples of the car in the US because the Mk1 was exceptionally prone to rust. Based upon Haggerty's valuations, I would now place its worth between $15k and $19k. This car... With less than 53K original miles... Has zero rust and drives like a new car. It's Toyota Super Red, T-Top, leather seats, pwr windows, pwr door locks, cruise control with a cassette player...and everything works. The T-Top pieces stow behind the seats and give the car a visual alter ego once removed. There's some minor damage to the leather on the driver's seat bolster which I will repair this summer but the car is otherwise perfect. Only the mileage keeps it from being Concours quality. "Regular Cars" said the MR2 was much heavier than the NA Miata... Not so. The curb weights of both cars are nearly identical... 2350 pounds for the MR2... 2138 for the first MX-5. The US version of the MR2 produces a meager 112HP while the NA Miata is rated at 113hp....Giving the Miata a slight hp/wt ratio advantage. Regular Cars said his engine "drones"... Well, mine has the AW11 1.6L engine... it growls and begs to be pushed to the red line. Personally, it's one of the things about the rear mid engine layout of the MR2 I like the most... That snarling little motor always egging me on from over my shoulder. Although neither car is fast... By today's standards they're slow... Both cars are wildly fun to drive. Their low ride height and high revving engines turn them into Go-Karts for adults... You always feel like you're going fast no matter what the actual speed. I love both cars and I have even contemplated taking the '89 to auction and using the proceeds to buy the new ND Miata. But MR2 is really cool and he's paid for so I will keep him and be happy knowing that I have one of the best of his breed in the United States.
welcome to the Mr2 cult! sw20 owner from California here! been following your channel for a long time. I'm so happy for you to have found your unicorn!
ttgk I think Mopar was making a tiny car cover unveiling joke. Like pull the tiny cover off and under it is a massive truck, and the most massive vehicle Dodge makes is the Ram. Wouldn't make sense if a Mopar guy said any other truck brand either.
Congrats on the Mr2 Mr. Regular. You're original Aw11 Mr2 video inspired me to get one, It took some digging but I ended up getting a barn find that needed an engine rebuild which was a fun learning experience. I've since fallen head over heels for mine and I don't think I'll ever sell it. They're a blast to drive and as much as you should preserve it, please enjoy it too.
I was so happy to see this pop up in my youtube feed. I purchased an 88 MR2 Mk1b in februrary with more miles than yours but the guy was the original owner. been loving it ever since. I had my eye on them for years as a nostalgic piece of my childhood and your videos on the AW11 convinced me that i should go for one. Congrats on the find and thanks for all the wonderful content!
I want a clean, 1980's Monte Carlo. Not SS, just the regular body style that isn't junk, or someone has put 22" wheels on. Those have seemingly become unicorns lately. I am the same way with cars as I am my old guns.... Bubba stay away!
Calm down shlomo. Middle America doesn't subscribe to your delicate sensibilities. No one can offend YOU but YOU. Take personal responsibility for your own life loser.
My parents bought an 84, regular body style brand new when I was in Kindergarten. Ran the hell out of it, dropped a 350 in it and that is what I drove through most of high school. Main reason I love those cars. I did have an 83 as a spare car in my 20's, but I sold it to pay for my now wife's engagement ring (plus where I was moving to at the time I had no place to park a second vehicle). The 84 still sits at my parents' place, but it needs some major, major restoration.
A few corrections - the MK1b started in 1987. Changes were to the EFI (minor changes like injectors), the engine was changed to the 7 rib block/larger journal crank and rods, the side vent changed, and the air filter ducting runs through the trunk. Some minor changes to the suspension also took place because Toyota was gearing up for the SC model in 1988. The wheels are Enkei 92's. The rear spoiler was an option on all AW11s, the third brake light was added in 1986, and in 1989 it was changed to LED. Yours is a hardtop, but yet another change in 1987 was the addition of the T-top model (making 3 versions, hardtop, removable sunroof, and T-top). Yours has the upgraded cloth seats with 7 way adjustable driver seat. This was another change in the 'b' in that earlier years had two tone seats. Speaking of interior, the center armrest changed as did the location of the ebrake handle. Snap oversteer actually isn't much of an issue in an AW11 and with a driver who understands at least basic weight transferring can easily control the car. It's slightly more-so an issue in a factory SC model with the ridiculously heavy E series transmission. Snap oversteer is a much bigger issue in the 91- 92 years, and Toyota redesigned the suspension in 1993 making it far better.
That's my first car! Best car I ever owned. White 1989 Supercharged MR2. The '89 had a sleeker embedded third brake light in the spoiler. The 4A-GZE was a beast of a motor and the car was so balanced it handled like it was on rails. I loved how the dash had a green indicator light that illuminated when the supercharger was engaged. No ABS! No power steering! Fully independent suspension. Extremely responsive handling and acceleration. Best car ever. Imma buy me another.
mr regular isn't the hero we want but he is the hero we need. The first monologue in this video was fantastic. you didn't use 1 stupid auto journalism cliche. It took me right back 20 some odd years to my elementary school classroom looking out the window waiting to leave for summer...... thank you.
My version of this car was a pea-soup yellow-green Bertone X1/9 I think, that was for sale in the parking lot of the gas station near my dad's house when I was maybe 10 or 11. I'm sure it would have been terrible to own, but I remember how I wanted it, exactly because of how it looked, just like you said.
haha I love these cars too! when I was in the 5th grade my dad purchased a used 87 and when I turned 12 he taught me how to drive it in the Kmart parking lot and then eventually let me drive it on desert roads before I was old enough to drive :D super fun car! in 95 the mk1 had seen the end of it's life with like 28000 miles on it so he bought a 93 mr2 and I got to drive that one when I got my license... I used to take him to work in the morning then use it all day then go get him after work. Both were super fun cars ... the mk2 wins in the looks department for sure but the mk1 had that "you are connected with the car" kind of feeling and the 7500 rpm redline just screamed! the mk2 was more of a mid range power band car. I'm into classic Toyotas when I was a kid I also wanted a 4runner so I bought one last year completely rebuilt the engine, ignition system, fuel system, suspension and all that and now it's my daily driver but I kind of want a sports car too ... always loved the Celica as well so I'm torn between and Mr2 and a Celica Alltrac .... alltracs are hard to find though and the Mr2 is probably more attainable. Toyotas from the 80's and 90's are some of the best cars every designed! congrats on the Mr2 man that thing is clean!
Brings back memories. My buddy in HS had an '88. During a going away party for a friend who was leaving for navy boot camp we crammed three people and a pony keg in it and completed a two hour road trip for the party. Two years later we road tripped it 400 miles to chicago to watch him graduate. I've always loved this car.
I just knew it would be an AW11. You haven't been shy about your love for them. I think in one video you even said "I will own one of these one day" so no big surprise. Looks like a cherry too, if I had to guess it probably cost around 5k.
Interesting to note, he also said, if your going to buy one of the three generations, you should only buy the third. He didn't take his own advice! and neither did I. lol
I love how the connection and application to AW11's are similar to mines! While in High school a friend showed me his MR2 and I immediately became interested in it. Also on my walk to school every day I saw that a house had an AW11 parked outside; everyday I would rubber neck and imagine how awesome it would be to own one in the future. Fast forward to my first year in college, I noticed that my close friends Dad had an 89' AW11 parked outside. And it was... PERFECT. It was the correct year, and trim i wanted (T-Top, black interior, power windows, power locks, Mk1B, etc) Eventually I bought the car for $800, and spent perhaps $1500 just to get the thing in proper running order. Although it was expensive to fix, filled with headaches, every penny and moment together was worth it. I drove the hell out of mines, but eventually I put it on Non-Op (due to smog). After 6+ years of ownership and a newer car, I still have ZERO intentions of parting with it. Im glad you found your AW11 Mr. Regular :) IMO the AW11 is my favorite car of all time, and please dont ever part ways with it!
Good for you, Mr. Regular. You've been busting your ass to entertain us schlubs for the better part of five years. Treat yo self. But also, don't make it a garage queen. Love it, but drive the piss out of it.
Nah, this one deserves to be a garage queen. If you wanna beat the piss outta something, please don't let it be something that's only rare because it's clean. Also, I don't think "mister Regular" is going to enjoy red-lining his car on a regular basis. He IS the Regular Car reviewer, after all
By "drive the piss out of it," I didn't mean "beat the piss out of it." I believe you can absolutely drive it like you stole it without disrespecting it. Sports cars were meant to be driven as such - sportingly. I know that hard starts, redline shifts, and general asshattery aren't Mr. Regular's style, but I don't think he should drive it like it's made of glass. I think we've got enough people saving these cars in one way or another.
TheSubnetMaster if there are enough people saving these cars, then why is a clean one like this so rare? people are saving them, but only in the sense that they're completely rebuilding the thing. and yeah, there's difference between spirited driving, which he will do, and "sporty" driving or "hooning" which woukd be fuckin dumb in this thing, in addition to not being his style. If you aren't redline shifting it, or even coming within 1k, you aren't driving the piss out of it, end of story
That thing is so 80s, the only thing missing is those weird purple and turquoise streaks you only see on the sides of white cars from the 80s and paper/styrofoam coffee cups in the hospital cafeterias and teacher's lounge back in the 80s-90s
I'm so happy you were able to buy an AW11! My first car was an 85 Mk1a who's original 4AGE exploded. I was swapping a built Silver Top in when the car was stolen with the bad motor in. I miss that car everyday! Keep the MR2 dream alive!
Mr. Regular, you bought the quintessential dream car of my youth as well. My first experience with forced induction of any sort was in a white, supercharged model. I was 13 and my older sister took me with her on a test drive. That car haunts my dreams. I salute you, Sir.
I own a 1989 Supercharged MR2 that I absolutely love. It's white like yours and is a blast to drive. I bought it in 2002 with 52k miles on it and I now have 147k. The car is in excellent condition and I love driving it. It only gets 2k-5k miles a year now since I don't drive it during the winter months.
Now I don't feel too bad for having similar feelings for my GT-S. Yeah its FWD, not that fast, ect but I have good memories of the car. Now I want a ZZW30 ...
leonhart423 The GT-S was a car ahead of it's time (faster then BRZ/FRS/GT86) That GT-S drivetrain plops in a ZZW if you want to have some serious fun and you'll be surprised of the difference.
Your opening monologue dug up my first memory of falling in love with a car. It was my cousin's unmodified Nissan 240SX that he traded his dad's old BMW sedan for. To this day I am an utter Silvia fanboy because of the memory of rolling up to his house after a three hour drive on the highway and seeing him wash it in the driveway. I will not rest until I can at least drive a Silvia.
I can understand that childhood need for a car. When I was 3 years old, I was on the way to the bank with my dad when I saw a beautiful black trans am with all the gold flaming chicken decals turning towards us and flooring it past us. I asked my dad what it was and as soon as he told me it was a firebird I knew I had to have one. Now I'm 17 and a 2000 WS6 is my daily driver, and I put on those same gold decals I had in my memory from when I was 3. I wouldn't rather have anything else, and I'm glad you got your childhood dream car : )
A true nostalgic beauty Mr. Regular, ticks off just all the right boxes, been trying to get myself something from the 80's Diamond-Star Motors era. Just a quick heads up though, like almost all Japanese vehicles of the era and since your MR2 is pushing past 70k in miles, I advise a timing belt change among other basic things to keep her running clean. Good luck and happy trails.
Deusenburg lol I have an older Mk1-a AW11 with 200K+ Miles with factory everything aside from sparkplugs. I'll be doing a full rebuild but not a single thing on the car stopped working, so I'll be refreshing her out of love, not necessity.
You say you want to "Enjoy" this untouched piece of 80s nostalgia, But to baby a car to the point where you say "I'll never have a drink in it" isn't really enjoying it...
This is youtube, a public forum where people are allowed to comment as they please, if RCR didn't want that he'd trim the comments accordingly, Why does my opinion affect YOU though?
"Yea yea tell your autobahn stories about how the Germans take driving more seriously than we do, But its four hours to Pittsburgh and I got a Sheetz burrito calling my name, I want to eat it while I make time" that's quote from RCR on the BMW 330 Americans live in a country where the physical size of each territory is large, so as a result we have an entire market focused around catering to the person on the open road and what they might need
Owned two of them. The first one was a 1988 model. Red, loaded, T-top, a little paint fade on top but otherwise it was perfect. I bought it at an inop sale where I was also the auctioneer for only $225. It had about 115k on it way back in the Y2K era and all it needed was the fuel pump. I sold it to a guy way up in who asked me to send about a dozen pictures of the undercarriage to make sure it had no rust. That's the one I miss but for a sales price of $2700 on a $300 car, it wasn't quite a tearful goodbye. The other was a black turd I bought for only $500 and sold for around $1800. That one was a hot mess, but that red T-Top model was a rolling nostalgia ride in all the right ways. Enjoy yours!
The first minute of your narrative perfectly describes how I feel and felt in the early eighties, just not about a car, back then. But this was the first car I deeply coveted, and finally bought in 1996. A very similar white 1988 mk1b with blue cloth and wind-up windows. And less than 40k miles on the clock. Never should have sold that one...
The normally aspirated AW11s are roughly the same weight as the NA Miata, remember that the USDM versions were heavier because of door bars and all that jazz. And between my old AW11 and old NA2, the AW11 was faster at auto-x events, but not by much.
EnsoZero Are Miatas really 2,400£s, I have an MkI-a and that's about what it ways. But I agree AW11s & Auto-X go together like Peanut Butter & Sandwich Bread lol.
I'm happy for you man. I did the same thing too with my first car, my 97 Miata. I wanted one since I saw the little happy face blink at me in middle school. I know what you're feeling and I think all car enthusiasts are with you on this one. Now don't snap-oversteer it into a tree.
Iv had mine 24 years and im rebuilding her from ground up as i type this .. i love her i still look at her with the same eyes as i did when i was in my early twenties. Ive driven loads of nice cars but shes still my dream car . Upgraded suspension n bushes and wide rubber . On twisty bits it keeps up with much faster cars 😍👌

This thing had to be expensive as hell though, like $5000+. These aren't cheap anymore.
Still, I hope Mr. Regular enjoys it.
In a new GTR.
Won't run again until I have enough funds to get a swap.
hoboemperor swap in a junkyard k24 and then eventually turbo it and make 700hp
@@true5.012 yeah let's all be suicidal and add 900 hp to a car that's prone to over steering and weighs like 2,000 lbs. Hp means jack shit.
Glorified Nuggets lol wtf
5:15 That part when Mr Regular explained why he bought it, sometimes that's all the reason you need.
It could be a supercar or just a banged up family saloon, if it's special to you then you'll enjoy every single moment with it. True car enthusiasts don't just go for the flashiest or fastest thing out there, just the one that means the most to them ^^
That being said, congrats on getting the car Mr Regular! I hope you enjoy every mile with Wendy ^^
TechPassion well said! :)
Doesn't matter what car it is because everyone's story behind their dream car is good.
yup, only reason you need to buy a car is that you want it.
Good words
Many of us TOTALLY called this LOL
Idk why but I feel so genuinely happy that you got an MR2, I usually don't feel this way for you tubers mainly because I don't know them personally, but for you it's different, I honestly feel extremely happy for you and I hope this car does you well.
We've known he loves them the whole time and tbh we are stoked for him too
I can scarcely think of a more perfect match of car to driver than Mr. R and the MR2. (Except for maybe Mr. R and a 1986 Chrysler K car.)

This is a man who just bought his dream car, and it is awesome! Congrats Mr.Regular! Well done sir
A car not driven might as well just be a picture on the wall.
AnArmoredMarch This is what I plan on doing, there are some guys you have like 15 of these to themselves, no exaggeration.
Chronicles of K. Toyoda I know someone like that lol. Dude's just a tad crazy but i respect his collection lol
"It's just so clean, I don't want to do anything to it. I hardly drive it"
As an owner of two '85 MR2s, this makes me sad.
I always feel bad for cars that get stuffed into garages. There meant to be driven. Not parked.
It depends on what your intentions for the car are. I bought mine with the intention of driving it a lot in summer. But I modified that as I saw its value skyrocket upward several thousand dollars right after I bought it. Now that I have decided to keep it long term, I will just enjoy it and maintain it the best I can.
@@ragingmcqueen you say that until all the daily drivers are used up and you find the garage queens are all thats left.

Keep it man. It's what makes you feel that way, and that's all that matters.
Slayermetallica69 Why are you going there with it? Of all the meanings of the word Probe why do you gravitate straight to the stupid one?

Get. Thanks, Mr Regular.
random fact, the AW11 MR2 was co-designed by Lotus. Just so you know !
Err...no. Someone who worked for lotus helped with the suspension setup.
@wraithgard Look up Lotus X100, and you can thank me after for educating you :)
A prototype that isn't even mid engined and uses a totally different suspension system? Yeah...you might want to do some of that educating yourself.
wraithgard same engine same shape uses the many sane components from the aw11, suspenion tuned by lotus. youre welcome.

I got a 2003 MR2 with pretty much the same condition you have. I got it at 69000 miles 6 months ago. Everything is clean with only rust on the rear exhaust, and the leather seats have begun to crack. Beyond that, Everything works and it is so much fun to just drive and enjoy.

I still regret not rescuing a mostly mint, totally complete AW11 from a local pick and pull yard.
Even if the engine was shot, it didn't deserve that fate.
sad
Like, it obviously needed some kind of repairs, I think the engine was ruined and there might have been some suspension damage, but the body was complete and replacement parts should have been cheap and plentiful.
Ended up with an '88 Ford LTD, automatic funny enough, which he later sold without my permission. We don't talk anymore, lol.
I am so happy you were able to find such a clean MR2. And for the same reason that you wanted a MR2 I want all of the 90s Japanese cars as well. tortopalist • Welcome to the MR2 community, maybe we'll see you on the MR2 Facebook club.
tortopalist • just bought my aw11 yesterday as a first car lol bad idea I know
I have an '89...I too am the second owner...

Milsurp Mike GNX?
Whoa bro... Chill out with that
Calm down shlomo. Middle America doesn't subscribe to your delicate sensibilities. No one can offend YOU but YOU. Take personal responsibility for your own life loser.
bugs the shit outta me that classic cars get destroyed by people doing that crap to them, should be shot for it
My parents bought an 84, regular body style brand new when I was in Kindergarten.
It took me right back 20 some odd years to my elementary school classroom looking out the window waiting to leave for summer...... thank you.
"I'm gonna cruise at night in the summertime with the windows down"
That's the definition of heaven, if you do it in your dream car
My version of this car was a pea-soup yellow-green Bertone X1/9 I think, that was for sale in the parking lot of the gas station near my dad's house when I was maybe 10 or 11. I'm sure it would have been terrible to own, but I remember how I wanted it, exactly because of how it looked, just like you said.
This is what car ownership is *really* about.
haha I love these cars too! when I was in the 5th grade my dad purchased a used 87 and when I turned 12 he taught me how to drive it in the Kmart parking lot and then eventually let me drive it on desert roads before I was old enough to drive :D super fun car! in 95 the mk1 had seen the end of it's life with like 28000 miles on it so he bought a 93 mr2 and I got to drive that one when I got my license...
I own a JDM SW20. I knew you were going to get an AW11 from your first review.. godammit! I want a red SC AW11 now
Yeah I noticed that too, his review of the AW11 is more passionate compared to his other reviews.
He didn't take his own advice! and neither did I. lol
I can't believe it, wanted to hear his piece one more time, after his to bring a trailer video
This story and your reasoning is the exact reason I got my 1989 Buick Reatta, it's 80's gold just like this MR2, pop ups and everything:)
If you aren't redline shifting it, or even coming within 1k, you aren't driving the piss out of it, end of story
too bad he sold this car a couple weeks ago
I have the exact same car
clock stopped working
cigarettes stopped
& dome light
has almost 300k miles and still run strong
Listen to vaporwave at night in aw11 dream right there
Headlights go up, headlights go down.
80s best years for Japan and German cars. Miss those days
German cars sucked it in the 80's.
Watching your videos for so long this makes me really happy to see. You do a lot of good for car culture Mr. R, congrats on the new ride, enjoy it!
Well, you did say it would go on Bring A Trailer.
Now I don't feel too bad for having similar feelings for my GT-S. Yeah its FWD, not that fast, ect but I have good memories of the car. Now I want a ZZW30 ...
leonhart423 The GT-S was a car ahead of it's time (faster then BRZ/FRS/GT86)
That GT-S drivetrain plops in a ZZW if you want to have some serious fun and you'll be surprised of the difference.
Haha that is what I would love to do, someday I shall I suppose.
This is a Toyota MR2 AW11 MK1b;
it's brown.
No it's cold white
my keytag is BROWN. this is as white as adolph's wet dream on a sunny day.
Good luck and happy trails.
get yourself an AE86 hatchback.
Deusenburg lol I have an older Mk1-a AW11 with 200K+ Miles with factory everything aside from sparkplugs.
I'll be doing a full rebuild but not a single thing on the car stopped working, so I'll be refreshing her out of love, not necessity.
Chronicles of K. Toyoda I just busted a nut Reading your comment.
You say you want to "Enjoy" this untouched piece of 80s nostalgia, But to baby a car to the point where you say "I'll never have a drink in it" isn't really enjoying it...
And your opinion should mean something to him??.....why?? Let the man enjoy the car exactly as he wants to.
This is youtube, a public forum where people are allowed to comment as they please, if RCR didn't want that he'd trim the comments accordingly, Why does my opinion affect YOU though?
"Yea yea tell your autobahn stories about how the Germans take driving more seriously than we do, But its four hours to Pittsburgh and I got a Sheetz burrito calling my name, I want to eat it while I make time"
that's quote from RCR on the BMW 330
Americans live in a country where the physical size of each territory is large, so as a result we have an entire market focused around catering to the person on the open road and what they might need
I just bought an AW11 myself (not as nice), and I too intend to listen to Vaporwave in it.
s o a e s t h e t i c
It's okay, I bought a 67 Mustang to listen to dad rock in
Owned two of them.
Congratulations! 🍾🎊🎉🎈
I have one of these!
Except mine is a red '85.
Can't wait to get it running and drive it. :)
