I've had 3, 2 NA's and 1 JDM supercharged import (into UK) was basically mint around 2000. I've driven a ton of cars since but still have a Supercharger MR2 MK1. The most fun, the best balance to performance/handling ratio in the most eye catching design ever made for such little cash. There are so few on the roads now I see more Lamborghinis around than this! And when you see one, a clean one, it stands out and everyone just stares, everyone loves the design (these days) no more 'hairdresser' insults as clearly this has passed over into classic car status. The supercharged version + mods is VERY rapid too btw, I've kept up with Scooby WRX's in mine upto around 90mph (on a private road *ahem*) from the lights very little can take it, not even some fast bikes, it just puts down the power so well on the rear and shoots off... it was the fastest car to 30mp when it was released (the supercharged version and that wasn't even modded) faster even than the F-40 to 30! due to how it puts down traction and torque without over-doing it. Can't recall the last time anything overtook my SC mr2 (not even a Mk2 turbo) at anything like normal b-road/highway speeds, over 80mph bigger engine cars will take it of course but ALL the fun is in the 0-60 range anyway!
Wow! Awesome video, Kyle! I just love these old Toyotas, especially the AW11 MR2. When I was kid, my dad owned both a Red 85 Corolla GT-S and to this day still owns his 86 MR2 in white! Sadly it had some transmission issues arise and has been sitting for years, but it's pretty low mileage and it has virtually no rust, a rarity indeed for a Japanese car from the 80s! Hopefully it'll be on the road again someday. Alright, boring story over. Thanks for sharing, mane!
I've owned a non super charged Mk1 in the UK since 99 and driven it seventy thousand miles and it's never ever let me down , always fired immediately and never missed a beat . The raspy engine just loves reves and sounds like a Moto GP bike in a metallic tunnel up behind me when I'm cooking it with the roof off , which I can't resist in the summer . I actually stay in the Philippines now but even in my most dissipated dissolute fun times there , nothing makes me smile more than that . Love it !
I've had two N/A and my current supercharger (+ mod = 190bhp and 0-60 in the 5 - 6 second range) very fast, very fun and still to me one of the best car designs of all time. It makes me smile too, I've driven posher, faster, higher priced, 'sexier' looking cars and none of them bring the smiles like the MR2.
Nice to see you're staying true to your roots of reviewing EVERYTHING you can get your hands on! As much as I love seeing new AMGs and Lamborghinis and stuff, this is the type of thing I'm really interested in.
i've had a few of these. i can't say enough good things about them. handled like a dream, and they were quick. i love these 1st generation MR2s. always will.
Looks like this car just rolled off the assembly line. This car is beyond immaculate condition! How you find such immaculate examples, is beyond me, but great job, as always, Kyle.
Thank you Kyle for reviewing this car. This is one of toyota's great sportscars along with the AE86. I really love this little car back in the 90's, brings a tear to my eyes someone has preserved it and looks so good till this day. Kudos to the owner and to Kyle for showing us this video.
Do a review of a 1991-1995 mr2 turbo. I'm like these reviews. I'm learning a lot more about the car than the typical information in other reviews. Great work!
This has to be one of the coolest cars I've seen you review Saabkyle, thank you for sharing this! I probably never would have known about it if you hadn't reviewed it. I love these older sporty cars!
I had a 1989 Supercharged MR2 and it was an amazing car! I wish i still had it but it blew a rod one day on the way to work and trying to replace the engine was out of the question. If you are even thinking about getting an MR2 don’t hesitate because they are loads of fun to drive.
"Mister Two"! As they used to call it in Car And Driver and Motor Trend back in the 80's lol! Younger guys hating but one of the many little fun cars you could buy back then without spending Ferrari/Lambo/Jag/Alfa/Benz/Lotus money! Thanks for posting, loving your good work, def entertaining and car educational! Happy Holidays to you and your family Kyle!
Cool find! It's not everyday you see one of these! Especially in this good of condition. There is something about the cars from the 80's and 90's that is awesome.
You have the best car reviews on RUclips! You should get your own carshow for the new cars coming out every year. But, I do like when you review the icons. Have you ever done a 69' Camaro SS? That's my fav of all time.
My dad had a beautiful silver '87 MR2, bought new.. But he handed it down to me when I was too young to know how to build a project car and I ended up with a half finished engine swap (4A-GE to JDM 4A-GZE). The week I moved for college, I took it to a mechanic my friend vouched for to finish the swap. I paid to have the engine rebuilt, and he sent me pictures of the finished product (or maybe somebody else's engine...) and then closed his business, vanished from town, left the car in front of some werehouse somewhere, and the car was impounded. By the time I was notified of the impound, the price was too much for me to swing and I found out via tracking the VIN that it was crushed. My dad has never forgiven me for it really, and if I bought another one I'd be disowned. Still love them though....
One of my all time favorite cars. The late 80’s and early 90’s are absolutely the golden era of Toyota sports cars and build quality. If this car had the original teardrop alloys it would be a showstopper. Prices are beginning to skyrocket for SC MR2’s in this condition. In its day no production car could accelerate quicker to 30 mph than an SC automatic MR2. The 5-speed was always the one to have for a drivers car stand point. Ditch those horrible aftermarket wheels and replace with OEM wheels and enjoy this JDM legend to the fullest. Cheers!
The one I had/86 - had a factory built in sub woofer under the driver's seat, unwired but is a great feature if one puts in a new sound system. One of the very best cars I ever had
Loving your videos of older cars. Please keep them coming. I'm going to absolutely honest in saying that your old school videos of Oldsmobile Toronados and Chevrolet Caprices were a lot more interesting. Not that your current videos aren't interesting... I just don't find newer cars as interesting as older ones.
I had a 1989 Supercharged MR2 with HKS headers, HKS pulley, Tokico shocks and springs, dp 18" wheels on BF Goodrich. It put out 170-175 BHP. A friend had similar set up but also had a piggy back turbo that put out 270 BHP... For its day, (before TRD) it was quick. 1/4 mile 11.5 secs.
Three years late to this video, but I have to say I am astonished by how clean this car is. My friend had a white non-supercharged MR2 in 1988, and two years later his car was in much worse shape than this car is almost 30 years later. I had an '88 CRX Si which was a cool car, but my friend's MR2 was much cooler. Clean supercharged 1st gen MR2 -- would have bought this car in a heart beat.
I currently have a 1989 Supercharged MR2 in white with a 5-speed manual. I loved watching this video. Mine too is in excellent condition although I do enjoy driving it more as it has 142k miles. Still the original paint and interior though and I get asked if I would sell it all the time! If I saw this car for sale I would have bought it and had 2 Supercharged MR2's! I first bought a black 1988 model exactly like this one except it had the black leather interior too. Sadly it was stolen after I owned it for 6 months and it was never recovered.
These were/are very neat little cars. By today's standards they aren't all that fast but in the late 80s, early 90s these things had some get up & go. Not to mention, they handled well, were reliable & weren't all that expensive. I had an 81 Camaro back then & I was all hurt when an MR2 left me in the dust.
A "modern" Classic and one of the best cars to drive (even today!). Those that don't understand or are too young to care, their loss frankly. Goes like a bullet when the SC is modded (+30bhp) and sticks to the road like a train = best fun and most unique looks in the price bracket. A lot more fun and way more unique/rare than the later 2 editions also.
Thanks for doing this review. Someone is selling one just like this in just as good condition, but with some mods to make it handle better and go a little faster. I'm meeting him tonight to possibly trade him for my '86 Mustang SVO.
Hey Kyle, since your reviewing late 80's sport compact cars now, you should do a review on the 88-92 Mazda mx6 gt. Really cool high torque sports car that was pretty rare. I had one in high school and it was always a head turner and prompted lots of questions.
amazing , i drove one at 18 (now 42) .. Had a bunch of a cars since, eventually ill stumble on an mr2 and get one. Funny part is I dont like any of the models after the gen1
But if you get the chance, I would like to see a clean 3rd generation Ford Explorer review. For how popular they are, I'm surprised you haven't done one yet. May not be the most desirable but it's practical and there's millions of them!
I really like your videos and I think a 5.9 Durango review would have a good following because when I was trying to watch some reviews on it most of them Were not very good but they had high view counts due to the popularity of the Durango.
Kyle, another great review of another classic! It can be plainly seen how this is a slightly inferior copy of the Pontiac Fiero. Ironically the Pontiac blew it away it sales, but killed it after only a five year run due to woeful mismanagement by GM at the time. While the MR2 lagged far behind it sales, it far outlived the Fiero by many years, and would have been the clear winner overall if there was an official competition between the two cars. I liked the MR2 also, don't get me wrong. Both cars were just the wrong vehicles at the wrong time in my personal history for me to buy either, but they were both great cars. Too bad GM killed the Fiero just as it was starting to peak. Perhaps their mentality was to go out on top? We'll never know I guess. Anyway, another top notch review Kyle, too bad you didn't get to drive this one.
Whoever took care of this car is a total legend of a person!
If only every 80s MR2 could be as clean as this one.
If only we could still buy these new from the factory.
