I know what you mean. My '85 GT-S has over 275K on the original engine and it still runs strong and catches many, who dismiss it as a little old car, off guard. They obviously don't know about power-to-weight ratios.
WAWE What Are We Eating ThE SuPrA iS BeTTeR Seriously, no. The MR2 is better. It's not because the Supra is faster that it is better. The MR2 is better, the Celica GT-Four is better, the 2000GT obviously is better, there is no comparaison.
Toyota's are no doubt very reliable cars, I just wish Toyota will start making cheap sporty cars again like these two. The Scion FR-S is a good start though.
Actually, the Corolla GT-S wasn't cheap. Remember, the Tercel was the entry-level car for Toyota back then and they went for 6 or 7K. The sticker price on mine was (MSRP) $9,538 and $9,983 (with $205 for variable assist power steering, $45 for carpeted floor mats and $195 for freight and handling). This of course, was minus the dealer's $1K mark-up. All-in-all, the car came to $11,501 out-the-door. Today, this would be more like 25K. But I do agree that they need to bring back a RWD Corolla GT-S that weighs under 2,500 lbs.
Mr Ol Skül You're essentially describing the GT-86, except that it's 2700lbs because nobody can make a car that light anymore [except apparently Mazda] and is slightly more expensive than 25k if you get a loaded one. Keep in mind that at 2700lbs, It's lighter than an E30 BMWfrom the 80s, RX-8, S2000... I can't think of anything as light that has a back seat and a trunk. It's lighter than most 'compact cars' are now. It also makes a good bit more power than the AE86 and does 0-60 in 6 second range rather than the 9 second range.
Connor Carroll You are quoting a bone stock 4AGE, not the street legal, modified one TRD went SCCA racing back in the early 90s. In that trim, the GT-S made 130-140 hp (TRD's own estimate) and does 60 in more like 7 seconds to the FR-S's 6.5. Not bad for a 25 year difference. Toyota can do it, as long as they don't add power seats, auto climate and the gaggle of unnecessary items currently found in today's cars. My car has power mirrors, windows, locks and remote hatch release, mechanical A/C, variable-rate p/s plus a killer sound system and weighs a mere 2,400 (wet) lbs, which includes REAL bumpers, not those flimsy units in today's cars. I can keep up with the 2005 XR-S (170 hp) Corolla, and that car weighed closer to my car than anything on the road today Today's Corolla is larger that the original Camry of 1984, why? Need a bigger car, then buy a bigger car. Don't make small cars bigger at the expense of weight and poor performance. BTW, unlike the GT-S, you can't really call that a back seat in the FR-S.
Mr Ol Skül As for weight, that's pretty nice - I wonder how much my mostly featureless SR-5 weighs. I hope around 2200 but I'm not certain. As for the back seats, I haven't actually sat in the back of an FR-S, so I'm not sure how it compares, but I'll agree the AE86 has a lot of space for it's size and weight... I carried four people [myself being a fifth], one of which was 6'3 and 400lbs... another being 6'2 and 230lbs. It was cramped and not very safe, (sunroof had to be open, and luckily I can still drive with the seat fully forward... hah) but it worked. I have also carried an entire band's worth of equipment in the car except for the kick drum of the drum set and the hihat/stand... [two guitar amps, a guitar, bass head and cab with 18" woofer, drums, PA head and speakers...] However one thing the FR-S certainly has over the AE86 is rigidity.. that light thin body and large openings for doors/hatch means a lot of flex compared to a modern chassis. [safety notwithstanding] I think the FR-S probably has a better CoG as well. As for the engine in the FR-S, It probably could have been developed with a better powerband [and real world performance], but I think they wanted to hit that 100hp/L mark for bragging rights and maybe compromised a bit. It might also have something to do with wanting to make a car you are required to push hard to get the most out of it, like the original.
Connor Carroll I agree, especially with the rigidity of the hatch vs. the FR-S. However, the 2-door coupe AE86 is much more rigid than the hatch and with slight modifications, can be made as tight as the FR-S and handle nearly as well. Remember, the new FR-S platform is already at its best, which doesn't leave much room for improvement as opposed to the AE86. In either case, both are great platforms for fun. As far as your SR5 is concerned, the 2-door coupe GT-S came in at an even 2200 lbs. Therefore, your car should weigh closer to 2000 lbs, gigantic passengers not withstanding, lol.

***** That must have been bone stock. Circa 2006, my TRD modified 1985 GT-S hit over 135 MPH and was still (gradually) climbing towards redline, when I figured the engine sound and exhaust note might give the Highway Patrol a reason to figure out where the melody was coming from and follow it, so I quit while I was ahead. Much with a Mouth Dogepool well, technically this is a usdm spec trueno, with different name, different bumper and less powerful 4age. But, still, this is ae86
Thank you so much for this, MotorWeek! I love watching these old MotorWeek reviews. So fun to see what these cars looked like brand new and how much auto technology has changed over the years.
It was - American auto makers were spewing out ancient engines from yesteryear just like institutional food in a hospital: Eat it, enjoy it, and don't tell us about your complaints because we aren't going to do anything about it.
it was a very low weight car, which makes a difference both in handling and acceleration. about 1000kg. the new 86 is still 200-300kg heavier than this car was. you don't need as much engine power or as much rubber with less weight. The new 86 though does have a lower center of gravity which is an improvement.
For comparison, neither of the big 3 had any commercial cars with DOHC back then. Hell the first American car that used a DOHC engine, had them built by Yamaha
While I love this car to death I will admit that the Corolla GT-S (AE86/AE88) is preety overrated thanks to things like Initial D. Dosent mean its not a great car though!
Xrocker7000 I agree! I owned a 1987 AE86 GTS before Initial D ever existed, it was a peppy car. No more, no less. There were a lot of other 'sporty cars' at the time that were much better. But When I got a Miata.......the Miata was the answer to everything. Miata is always the answer!
+ゴゴAged Pasta ゴゴ yea, college roommate had one in 87 and I drove it quite a bit. really nothing super special. It's very light and you can power out a corner with the rear wheels pretty easily ( I guess it's call drifting these days). the celica, integra and crx are the more desirable ones back then
The AE86 chassis is a great car and defiantly gets more love than it deserved via Initial D. Honestly, I feel the AW11 is a more capable chassis all around, being the better car of the 2 and deserving more love, and have 2 equally as good followup generations. Though the AW11 doesn't have the drift background and credibility as the AE86, the AW11 has the track and group B rally pedigree, and still beating up new miatas in local AutoX events.
Antwon Jenkins Yes we did. The chassis code for all USDM MkV rear-drive Corollas were in fact AE86. The only difference was the SR5 models had the AE86 in the VIN, while the GT-S models listed them as AE88, but that was to differentiate the powertrains (4AGE vs. 4A) between both models (along with the suspension, rear diff, brake and interior trim upgrades).
Thank you Mr. Davis for these great Throwback/Flashback videos, as well as your current reviews. Even after 3 decades, you still have enviable enthusiasm and spirit. Who wouldn't when you get to enjoy so many cars.
I had the 2 door coupe w/ a trunk. It was a fun little car, especially with a few TRD performance parts, and I put over 300K miles on it. The sunroof leaked, the rear wheel bearings didn't like bigger rubber, and the AC went belly up.
Back in the day, I owned a 1985 Corolla GTS. I loved that car. Very reliable and fun to drive. Why can't we get simple, fun cars today? Today's cars are overengineered and overpriced.
@4:34 when the announcer said "Smooth down shifts are hard" keiichi tsuchiya would laugh!!!!!!!! Haha!!!! They should a of chose a more skilled driver!!!!!!
I constantly watch this video. It makes me wanna continue searching for a Corolla GT-S and buying one. A hard thing to do nowa days but see how common they used to be makes me sad that they’re pretty difficult to find.
And Toyota, some days the world's largest car manufacturer, can't offer us an awesome rear-drive small sedan/coupe in the mould of this GT-S, something like a budget 1/2-series BMW, for what reason exactly? The FRS is a step in the right direction, but only a step, and unfortunately they market it as a Scion, as if to reinforce the point that Toyota is the builder of all the BORING cars in their lineup.
Burhan Diwan Canada also. They set up this new brand called "Scion" which is supposed to be their brand for "youthful buyers," but which has been a waste of time, really.
+Maestro_T The FRS is a Toyota, so what if it's offered as a Scion? There's no standalone Scion dealer, you'd have to be dumb to think you weren't buying a Toyota and that Toyota doesn't make it.
NARFALICIOUS It's a question of brand image. Now that Scion no longer exists, it's kind of pointless to talk about that, but Toyota still has a stodgy, old-person image which their new angular styling really isn't addressing.
Please sir I am begging you. Do you have anything on a 1985 Toyota Celica GT-S 5 speed manual Hatchback? First car I ever bought that had everything I wanted without wife and kids to care about. So single in 1985.
I love these, Thanks for putting another one out this week. We know you have the vaults, do 3 or 4 vids per week! I don't even care if were talking about some old dull cars either, its cool to see where we have come from, and sadly, what we have lost like the GTS and MR2.
A few years back I owned a mint 85 MR2 that was an exact clone of this silver test car. Had only 70k miles and it ran perfect. It was stupid fun on twisty mountain roads. I still kick myself for selling it.
Don't forget that Throwback Thursday could be changed to Throwback Tuesday in order to spread the uploads evenly apart. Something like that would make more than a 1 day gap. Unless you wanted to change Fridays to Memory Mondays. I don't know, there's a lot of good ideas.

Its such a great generic but perfectly good, practical, and reliable car. Until Weebu's collect it and try to make huge money off of it, and fame for driving it Calling it a racing, or drift car! Because some guy in japan in the 1980s was good at drifting one, and some cool manga books, and anime shows had that car in it.
The AE86 in Initial D was inspired by a couple of real life 86s, Keiichi Tsuchiya's Trueno and Iida Akira's Levin (the one with the 11k rpm Group A engine), so it did have some reputation of being an enthusiast's car back then.
nice review, I bought a GTS. a that time, it was a wonderful car, quick (at that time) stylish, great MPG, reliable. I bought a loaded Honda Accord v6 and I regret the purchase as I should have kept the GTS for a few more years, nothing was mechanically wrong, the A/C stopped working and it was starting to rust.
My dad had this exact car except red back in 2005 i would sneak it out to the canyons in the middle of the night with a cup of water needless to say i watched too much initial d
James Dean Youngs You got a couple things wrong there champ. The 4AGE is a DOHC engine, so you'd be changing 2 cams, not just one, and it's an Inline 4, so there's only one cylinder head, not multiple. Same thing with the head gaskets, there's just one.
They were fun cars alright. My 2014 Corolla is reliable but it's more like an appliance. It does the job but it's a boring driver. Harder to work on if I had to...
Phantøm "it says AE88 in the VIN!!!" Okay and? The S13 doesn't say S13 in the VIN but you would call it an S13 anyway, AE86 is the name of the chassis and the Corolla GTS says AE86 in the Chassis code, the S13 says S13 in the chassis code, hence the name S chassis

these are great - funny how an 82 camaro with a v8 had just 40 hp more than these 4cyl 1.6
***** Yes sirrr, I use to love running from the police n GT-Ss. Atlanta city police cars only ran 108mph and it ran 115mph.
That was a blast.
***** That's what happens when smog regulations choke the life out of engines with ancient carburetor technology vs. multi-valve engines with electronic fuel injection controlled by a real ECU.
***** I've had mine up to 130 mph. With speedometer 2 mph error, that's 128, and that was at over 5,280 elevation just north of the New Mexico-Colorado border. :o) www.1985ae86hatchback.blogspot.com
Love to see the '88 Supra Turbo on your flashback days. I used to own one and it sure would be sweet to see it in action again.
We have that...you'll be reunited soon
Thank You!
I loved riding in your Supra Steve, what a beautiful car that was!!!
Can't wait to see the review Reed! Excited!!!
Still waiting
motorweek winning some huge points with the car fans!!! love these videos
The "Fujiwara Tofu Shop" drift machine!
eldom72 ahah
sanosuke?
wrong car.
Fujiwara's Corolla is a Sprinter Trueno.
Much with a Mouth Dogepool well, technically this is a usdm spec trueno, with different name, different bumper and less powerful 4age. But, still, this is ae86
i want that corolla. that just sounds strange today, but that one I really like.
I want a Saab.
that MR-2 became even greater with the later year supercharger cars. Now show us some Omni GLHS or just a GLH-T would be great. I miss mine :-(
Evey 40 years or so Toyota sends us a cool Corolla. For 2022 we are getting the GR 😁
'Instant and long running sports car fan demand' yup got that right
Thank you so much for this, MotorWeek! I love watching these old MotorWeek reviews. So fun to see what these cars looked like brand new and how much auto technology has changed over the years.
This dude really remind me of the dad from drake and josh

12 year old initial d fans: OMG THATS TAKUMIS CARRR😱

I'm 15 you dimwit
Cant stop the fire!!!!
Cant stop the mad desire!!!!
It's amazing how the specs are so tame. 112HP, disc brakes, 185 width wheels! And how twin cam technology was so revolutionary.
And still today American still uses pushrod on their modern engine
It's about the revs baby...
It's very light and you can power out a corner with the rear wheels pretty easily ( I guess it's call drifting these days). the celica, integra and crx are the more desirable ones back then
Mr. Johnson Unless you are tall
Or need to carry anything
No need for AE88/AE86. The US version is still very much an AE86.
10k$ for a brand new corolla .. that's about the price of one today , if its in clean condition!
MTLJack good luck finding a clean one, and most people are charging almost 10k for a rusted hooned sr5 cuz "muh initial d"
Man, I would kill for a Hachi! And how true is that last statement?
Which is why, much to my wife's dismay, I will never sell mine, lol.
Mr Ol Skül Me neither, lol. Not until I'm too darned old to drive it anymore!
Ah, I love my AE86. Coupe Trueno!
Lucky man
But can you slalom without spilling from the cup of water or ruining a whole batch of tofu?
All hail the king. AE86.
Dorikin Hachi Roku!
*AE88
America never got the 86
Antwon Jenkins also has the durr 116hp blue top 4a gahhhh!!!!11
Antwon Jenkins Yes we did. The chassis code for all USDM MkV rear-drive Corollas were in fact AE86. The only difference was the SR5 models had the AE86 in the VIN, while the GT-S models listed them as AE88, but that was to differentiate the powertrains (4AGE vs. 4A) between both models (along with the suspension, rear diff, brake and interior trim upgrades).
Mr Ol Skül I have been misled
*Eurobeat intensifies*
"A hair slower than a V6 Pontiac Fiero" Until it hits a turn...
The toyota GT-S knew since it was born that he was made for drifting 😍
The famous AE86!
Love the mid 80s Toyota styling, very minimalist and clean.
I use to work on those at Toyota, I had a chance to experience all the Supra, Celica, Corolla and MR2 cars. That was a good time.
Those problems are all from lack of maintenance and driver ignorance.
Im here from the year 2085 to let you guys know still waiting on a rear wheel drive Corolla.
30 years later
its still making an impact
Takumi?! :O
Crafty :D
Taco meat
What?
MAHABO Productions deja vu
Na-NANI?!? Trailing throttle tail twitch technique?!?
Back in the day, I owned a 1985 Corolla GTS. I loved that car. Very reliable and fun to drive. Why can't we get simple, fun cars today? Today's cars are overengineered and overpriced.
I'd love to see a Celica Supra, not sure if you guys ever did review them.
We have that too.
***** i've been looking for a review of a 1988 celica gt-s, wonder if you might have that also, i had one and i so miss it , thanks
I had a 79. It felt fast but really, it was a boat.
Pretty Impressive for the mid-80s
One of the best cars ever. Front Engine and RWD, manual, fast and fun cars. Very reliable. This is a winning formula.
this is what they mean when they say they dont make cars like this anymore
@4:34 when the announcer said "Smooth down shifts are hard" keiichi tsuchiya would laugh!!!!!!!! Haha!!!! They should a of chose a more skilled driver!!!!!!
While the FRS/BRZ is impressive, it is expensive. Why can't Toyota bring back something like these?
The Corolla is my dream car but sadly i can't find the right one so im risk my life to get a mr2 supercharged
Maestro_T in my country it is sold as the Toyota gt86 and the Subaru BRZ. It's maybe only in America where toyota doesn't sell it as a Toyota.
Burhan Diwan Canada also. They set up this new brand called "Scion" which is supposed to be their brand for "youthful buyers," but which has been a waste of time, really.
Maestro_T as long as you get the experience I say. :)
98% of comments: initial D dumbs
2% of comments: MR2 adequates
Mr2's arent rare
@@IrishWannabe They are, dude, they are.
Back when cars used to be actually *FUN* to drive.
I love these, Thanks for putting another one out this week. We know you have the vaults, do 3 or 4 vids per week! I don't even care if were talking about some old dull cars either, its cool to see where we have come from, and sadly, what we have lost like the GTS and MR2.
DEJA VU, I'VE JUST BEEN IN THIS PLACE BEFORE
HIGHER ON THE STREET
A few years back I owned a mint 85 MR2 that was an exact clone of this silver test car. Had only 70k miles and it ran perfect. It was stupid fun on twisty mountain roads. I still kick myself for selling it.
I figured there would be another Throwback type day. This is great.
Experimental for now
Don't forget that Throwback Thursday could be changed to Throwback Tuesday in order to spread the uploads evenly apart. Something like that would make more than a 1 day gap. Unless you wanted to change Fridays to Memory Mondays. I don't know, there's a lot of good ideas.
MrCarGuy20 on rainy days I can get a lot digitized, do right now I've got enough to do two a week through october.
Ever since then the ae86 has become a legendary car 👀 back then everyone thought it was jus another econobox 😂 it made a name for itself through out time 👀
Its such a great generic but perfectly good, practical, and reliable car.
Until Weebu's collect it and try to make huge money off of it, and fame for driving it
Calling it a racing, or drift car!
Because some guy in japan in the 1980s was good at drifting one, and some cool manga books, and anime shows had that car in it.
I get it mate, the sad thing is that is hard to feel like driving a Stock GT-S / Levin / Trueno except in Video games lol ...
The AE86 in Initial D was inspired by a couple of real life 86s, Keiichi Tsuchiya's Trueno and Iida Akira's Levin (the one with the 11k rpm Group A engine), so it did have some reputation of being an enthusiast's car back then.
you know nothing 😂
Why do they always have a car sitting sideways on the 0-60 track start line?
TAKUUUUMMMMIIII!!
HACHI-ROKU!
Little did they know weeaboos would completely storm this car
LOVE THIS KEEP THEM COMING!!!!
nice review, I bought a GTS. a that time, it was a wonderful car, quick (at that time) stylish, great MPG, reliable. I bought a loaded Honda Accord v6 and I regret the purchase as I should have kept the GTS for a few more years, nothing was mechanically wrong, the A/C stopped working and it was starting to rust.
Damn... You sold a rare and a great looking car for a ugly accord V6 :(
My dad had this exact car except red back in 2005 i would sneak it out to the canyons in the middle of the night with a cup of water needless to say i watched too much initial d
Corolla is love, Corolla is life.
Title says review corolla GTS
Proceeds to review the MR2
The guy with the stopwatch had me rolling
I want a Corolla GTS and make it look more like the AE-86 Trueno.
藤原 - とうふ - 店 (自家用)
James Dean Youngs You might need to tune up the 1.6, though. It's missing 18 ponies.
Kevin Moondust A more aggressive cam, ported heads, upgraded head gaskets, and a full exhaust should do it.
James Dean Youngs You got a couple things wrong there champ. The 4AGE is a DOHC engine, so you'd be changing 2 cams, not just one, and it's an Inline 4, so there's only one cylinder head, not multiple. Same thing with the head gaskets, there's just one.
you need bumper swap and badge as well
This was When Toyota were real quality and fast reliable Cars specially The Twin Cam RWD Corolla , Today IMO are nothing but FWD Toys
They were fun cars alright. My 2014 Corolla is reliable but it's more like an appliance. It does the job but it's a boring driver. Harder to work on if I had to...
My nephew had one exactly like that one! Boy what a fun car that was! Toyota messed up when they did the Corolla front wheel drive!
Initial D
take me back 29 years so i can buy one plz :)
Cue the weebs
*Eurobeat intensifies*
AE86 😍😍❤️❤️
haha i made a Initial D joke comment as well
its not an ae86, sadly.
Phantøm yes it is dumb fuck
Phantøm "it says AE88 in the VIN!!!" Okay and? The S13 doesn't say S13 in the VIN but you would call it an S13 anyway, AE86 is the name of the chassis and the Corolla GTS says AE86 in the Chassis code, the S13 says S13 in the chassis code, hence the name S chassis
Eight Six the real, true ae86 never left japan. the corolla gts was the closest thing we got, but the real 86 stayed a japanese domestic car.
If Baja was still around we would have all the oldschool motorweek
"and long-running sports car demand"
_no no, he's got a point_
Great engine! Next up '89 Taurus SHO!
they should soup up Conan O'Brien's SHO and turn it into a tuner car but then leave those damn broken mirrors.
3:38 *coupe not sedan
i would love a clean stock gts, it’s too bad they’ve been mangled and destroyed by epic anime drift tards
You're right
Needs more road feel??? Wrong....its the ultimate tofu delivery car made specifically for quick, tight cornering on mountain passes
love these old school review's
I mis5 my 85 MR2 - just like the white one in this review. A perfect driving machine and AWESOME daily driver. So much so that when the engine blew (literally- a hole the size of a large grape fruit while going down the road at 55 mph!) I bought an 89' to replace it. The fully decked out one with the two spoilers..... Even the 89 has been gone over 15 years now. No car has been like it since.
Ah yes, another car I'd love to own but probably never will cause I doubt I'll find a nice one for a good price. The AE86 is too cool!
Ehr wahr wunderschoehn dieser gt corolla.
