Agreed! I drove one of the previous versions with the supercharger, back in 1990, it was great but not quick off the line. However, it easily pulled to 100 mph... never got to drive the vr6 edition tho...
@@chrisblank8263 So, if I came across one of these with reasonable miles, would it be worth buying as a second car? I wouldn't want to own something that was prone to breaking down all the time, aside from the fact it's a VW.
I still have my yellow '90 g60 and have owed it since 1992. It only ever left me sit one time- when the hall sensor failed, and it just shut down and I almost took out a curb when I could barely get it to steer & brake; thank god I was not on a highway when that happened! VW paid my towing bill and replaced the distr/sensor for free even after it was out of warranty. I doubt many other companies would do that, to be honest. I still have people ask me what kind of car it is when I stop for gas etc.
I also have a nugget yellow ‘90 G60, which I’ve had since the mid 2000s and am it’s 2nd owner. You can see it in my thumbnail pic here. The chassis is amazing, and with a slightly throatier cat-back exhaust upgrade it sounds like a Porsche 944 to my ears. It’s not a car for the faint of heart where reliability is concerned, and it’s perhaps best suited to be owned by a DIY/shade tree mechanic who already has a robust set of tools. But when it’s up and running, nothing I’ve ever driven has felt so perfectly balanced and as well screwed together, and also puts a huge grin on my face, as that car does for me.
@@TheDanno210That's so awesome. I have owned 76 cars in my last 26 years of life (I am 40 now) and I have owned quite a few fairly exciting cars. I have built quite a few of them to be supercar beating beasts, like my 1992 Acura Integra GS that I traded for my 1994 Ford Explorer that I swapped the original 4.0L OHV V6 for a 302W 5.0L V8 and installed an Explorer Express Eaton M-90 supercharger to that went on to make 457 whp through a 2WD system and 33x12.50 tires and a 6" suspension lift. I turbocharged my Integra using junkyard parts (with brand name supporting mods) and it went on to make 366 whp at 20 psi. I have also had a 1992 Plymouth Colt hatchback that I swapped a fully built 4G63t engine into that made 498 whp at ran a best time of 9.88 @ 147 MPH. I have owned MANY imports over the years that I LOVE to surprise domestic owners with, but my latest build (and my last one) was a 1997 Honda Civic EJ8 coupe that I built a fully forged and sleeved B18C for with cams, a fully ported and polished head, ALL brand name parts, and a Garrett GTS3582 dual ball bearing turbo and it made 709 whp and 503 lb ft of torque at 34 psi. One car I have ALWAYS wanted to build is a Corrado VR6 with a big turbo. I now own a 2013 BMW 128i and I'm chomping at the bit to install the same GTS3582 turbo that I still have when I sold my Civic.

Still looks great in 2017!!!! I remember clearly going to the 1994 Vancouver Auto show, and seeing the "Top of the Line" Corrado completely loaded, all of us were totally like "DAS IT MANE" and in 1994 we were right!
Love throw back thursday, one of the first tv car shows I can think of in the US, I've been watching since 1984 I wish every day could be a throw back.
I WANT ONE. Years ago in the 90s when I was in college, a used car dealership down the road had THREE of these sitting on the lot. Wish I'd had the money back then.
Gorgeous looking little cars. I am surprised that this hasn't become more of a classic. The problem, in the U.K., was that the Corrado VR6 was very expensive, much more than normal hot-hatches. This was compounded by insurance problems for all such performance cars, including top hot hatches. They were very very very easily stolen and insurance was prohibitive. Still... they were gorgeous and made Golf GTIs look boring. Nowadays this would be the Golf R......
A friend of my Mom's bought one of these brand new and gave me a ride in it. All I remember is how fast it felt and how sore my ass was from the firm ride and hard seat.
i had a 91 G60 silver wolfsburg edition. this car is what made me fall in love with VW. since then i have owned 10 vw cars . i just sold my 13 gti for a Audi TT. i love vw
Yup! I feel like people's expectations for cars (Why do we need so much room in our cars? Why?) and safety expectations (Okay that is reasonable) are the cause for the weight gains and performance degradation of modern cars.
I had a VR6 from new (‘94 model) and kept it for 12 enjoyable years, when I sold it for over half what I originally paid for it new 😉. With some simple modifications (like Koni sports, H&R springs, brake pads, exhaust, etc.), it proved consistently faster than newer and more expensive and powerful cars like the bmw 330Ci and 350Z on track. The engine remains a benchmark for character and power delivery imo!
+Angello Rockafella Driven both. Love the G60. I bought two G60's. The VR6 is fun. G60 Supercharger can be faster tuned right. G60 is sporty! The supercharger makes driving more exciting. =}
Almost bought one , even drove it but at the end couldn't get to say goodbye to my 16v Scirocco. I did regret it later and no reflection on my Scirocco
I would love a Corrado or Scirocco but they’re hard to find these days. There’s only a few for sale in the entire country and they’re as expensive today as they were 30 years ago.
Is it just me, or does John Davis actually look better today than he did in this video? Granted, he obviously is a bit older looking today, but overall I think he looks taller, slimmer, and a bit more sophisticated than he did back then. At least IMO, anyway.
Yeah. I was thinking the same. I can't say much. I'm 46 with a gut too. It happens. I'd say his cardiologist put him on a strict diet. He was heavy in this video. I miss the anorak, though.
That's an impressive car! It's right on par with my Nurburgring tuned Sentra SE-R Spec-V, this car was out 12 years ago...though for a lot more money (I paid 22G taxes in at the beginning of 2011).
Who'd have thought 10 years down the line some bright spark would put 2 vr6 engines together to make the 300km/hr Phaeton W12 and all the Bentley line up.
Bucket list car for sure. I had a 94 Passat with the VR6. It was an electrical nightmare....but when she ran it was pure bliss. Few engines sound better than a floored VR6.
i miss my corrado dearly! such a fun and yet practical car. if it didn't come down to the diminished parts supply i'd still be driving that thing today!
Probably the hottest hatchback on the road in the 90's. This car was every street racer teenie bopper's dream car when I was growing up. Still some pretty impressive numbers for a car that's nearly 30 years old. I wonder why Volkswagen never set to continue manufacturing this vehicle?
Poor sales and too many hatchback models I think. They had this, the Golf, and Scirocco all on sale too close to each other. Top that with the low power/liter/weight ratio of the VR6 and it didn't make sense to continue it. With the new Scirocco now, there probably won't ever be a reason to revive the Corrado name.
It was probably cannibalizing GTI sales. VW replaced it with the Scirocco, which was a blast to drive as well, but even that one got nixed last year. I love the Scirocco and wish it was still in production and was made available in the U.S., but alas, VW didn't deem Americans worthy =(
I still love how this thing looks. I had a chance to get one back in the day as my first car, but my parents preferred if I got something new with a warranty instead, so I ended up with a basic '94 VW Golf with a 90 hp engine. :/ (Well, it was new and it was a VW, not a Ford Tempo, so I still did well on that one.) Its looks reminded me a bit of a shorter, cheap version of a Porsche 928. Well, sort of.
It's such a unique and cool hatchback design. I wish they would've kept this going with a more modern front end. The wheels are also super cool, especially for stock.
I’ve always loved the Corrado, especially with the VR6. I’ve always wanted to get one but it’s very hard to find a clean example or one that isn’t heavily modded at a fair price. I ended up getting a pretty clean and mostly original 2005 Audi TT 3.2 (VR6) Quattro at a great price. I love it!
one of my all time absolute favourite front wheel drive car the VR6 model (G badge) what a fun car to drive, gear box was sweet and tight, the engine noise and induction noise was sooo addictive, the interior screaming 90's, seats... regret i had a chance to buy one but at the time got scared of the high mileage. 90's classic!

Dear Ben Davis, could you please see if you have a video on the 98 Corolla LE? I've been subscribed for over 5 years, I just love the old car reviews on here. Mr Jon Davis always does a excellent job! ThankYOU very much! :-)
I'll add it to the list. Thanks for being a fan!
Oh ThankYOU so much! I can't find any videos, so ThankYOU so much!
I totally wanted one of these.
Awesome cars, but $25k in 92? I paid less for my GTI in 2008! I barely paid more for a 4 year old S3 that has twice the power 😁
Corolla has ALWAYS been my favorite Toyota vehicles 😁
THE CLOCK LED PIXELS ARE DYING ON A BRAND NEW CAR ! thx vw
Wow, has it really been that long since the Corrado came out?? I remember this was one new car i strongly considered for purchase back then...
I owned a '99 Jetta GLI VR6 back in the days. That engine was so powerful and strong back then but was plagued by reliability issues. Still, it was one of the better engines of its time for VW.
Any chance on seeing a throwback episode featuring the original Acura NSX? :-)
I'm working on the NSX... it's missing from the archives .
Ben Davis Wait...THE Mr. Davis? (Y)
John is the real Mr. Davis. We're not related
Found a usable copy of the '91 NSX. It'll be ready in a couple weeks
Do you have a review of the Integra GSR (94 - 95)? I bought one new back then and loved it. At the time I was also considering the Ford Probe GT. I actually remember watching the episode when MW reviewed that car. If you could find either and publish it that would be great! Keep up the good work!
There is a purple vr6 parked/abandoned, in great shape only clearcoat peeling at a house backyard in my hometown,, im saving up to go make them an offer
An automatic spoiler in 1992!? V-Dub was ahead of it's time!
SonOfTheVille914 no, Lancia had it first on the Ferrari V8-powered Thema 8.32 saloon
4:16 - The car only had 3,806 miles on it and already has a burnt out digit in the clock LCD. As much as I love this car, VW's classic electronic gremlins wouldn't let go. Lol...
best design vw had till today
THANKS JOHN!!!!!!!!
I literally only like 3 VW..Corrado..R32..new gen Golf r.these things look so unique and nothing sounds like a vr6..the scirocco is cool to but us Americans can't get them
Throw it back Thursdays
Getting one this Week!!!! Same Yeah and trim :) if everything works out :)
Pretty cool it had traction control back then! And I'm first
i've always wanted a corrado :(
I WANT ONE
I have a 92 SLC & it’s 🤩 to drive. VR6 is the best.
I was 22 when this car came out but a $22,000 it was more money than I could carry with my credit and my $7.80 an hour job I head back then.
Handsome machine
