This song can apply to so many situations , love, society, fear all of it the angst of life when we want to fix something when we should let it be and let God work.
I had the same emotional reaction as the brother in the white shirt. It’s a guy at the end of his tether, for whatever reason. So nice to see someone feel that depth. Love this whole video, the visuals, the music, the vocals, the lyrics, and your reaction.
George, when you get emotional about music, it's then that we love you so much. You feel music on another level from most, it speaks to your soul and drives your life..."emotional" is a very GOOD thing.
This is an incredibly emotional song! Over 30 years later it still gives me chills and brings me to tears. Thank you for sharing your heartfelt reaction!
this song always gets me too. its a powerful love song plucked out on the mandolin, sharp and biting. the parable shows gods and workers powerless to help the fallen angel, who is mocked by peasants and dies. this sadness, loss, futility and despair haunt the music.
The instrument was a mandolin. This riff was the thing he created the first time he played it. He plays other stringed instruments... so that helped LOL. Then they built a song around it.
R.E.M.s lyrics are probably the most complex ever but the vide is always hitting deep - that's why I continue to listen to them since they first came on the scene.
Losing my religion is a southern term for losing your mind. The lead singer said the lyrics were about unrequited love. If you watch the video again and look at some of the imagery of the beautiful men you will figure it out.
What I love so much about R.E.M., & music in general, is that it can be interpreted different by every person listening, & mean something different emotionally, depending on where you are in your life..... 💞💞💞 This song is truly a masterpiece!
First time I heard this, I was on a train in Ireland in 1993 … a whole class of school kids were on the train and were singing it. I loved the lyrics and wondered what the song was …. I then happened to hear it on the radio a while later and found out 🙂
You're getting emotial because the song is intensely emotional. About trying to make a relationship work without losing yourself. One of the great songs and videos ever and thank you as usual for a great reaction my bros 👍🏾
I understand, George. This song - this time - took me back to when my husband left to go be with his girlfriend. I honestly was an ordained minister who was very active in the church, and I just quit! I quit praying, I quit talking to God. That was 22 years ago. I was so mad at God for allowing that to happen after 15 1/2 years. Then I got married again, and we got back in church, and then my husband was shot (he was a bodyguard), doctors didn't repair it correctly, replaced his knee with a metal one, and it ground down, putting small bits of metal into his brain, and he started having hallucinations, and I found that he had hung himself in the garage! So I quit going to church again. Then I ran into someone who I'd known back when I was 24, and his band was having a 25th anniversary concert. My kids were grown, I had no responsibilities other than to myself. So I got a two week ticket to fly out and see his band. When it came time to leave, he said he'd lost me once before and he wasn't going to lose me again. The year we were married he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He died April 10, 2019. Guess who hasn't been to church since! Yeah, and I actually was one in the spotlight, as I was lead singer in a Christian Rock band - and a soloist in the church! So now, that's me in the corner, I once was in the spotlight, but I keep losing my religion! Haven't listened to the song in years - now I know why!
Music is a wonderful thing. REM was formed in a college town in American Georgia (as in the United State) formed in the 80s, but really made it big in the 90s and 2000s. Some of their songs are about human emotions and can have deep meanings. They had the same members for over 25 years.
The passion and emotion in Michael Stipe's vocals cannot be discounted when talking about the emotion this song conveys. REMs lyrics can be ambiguous, but the energy and passion of Michael Stipes vocals and body language (if you ever see them live), speaks volumes. If you thought this song was sad you might want to stay away from "Everybody Hurts" by them. Or at least bring some tissues LOL. If you really want to hear a great breakup song by them check out "Country Feedback". Intense.
I fully agree ! This is an iconic song, maybe one that defined the decade it came out. His vocals are somehow cutting through the room, the aesthetics of the video contribute, very artful. I feel similarly the emotion - maybe some of the key phrases "That's me in the corner", sounds so sad. Great reaction, great song. Shows the effect music can have on us (in a good way) - it makes us human.
I cry while listening this song. So much pain, heartache and deception makes you loose your faith in everything and everyone to the point you try to convince yourself that it all was a dream. 😭💔
I think I can probably speak for most of us here : We really APPRECIATE your openness and honesty with us. When you’re feeling down or have something deep on your mind, as well as when you’re high in spirits , feeling crazy to rock - whenever you share these experiences with us, it makes US feel better too! IT’S SPECIAL. Thank you guys! 🤗💓
Art, Religion, Politics, and Beauty are just a thin veneer. I always saw this as a song about discovering you are not what you think you are, and your values are not important.
I love your description of what it feels like to listen to R.E.M. I also almost always listen to music first, but Michael Stipe is one of the few people that always capture my attention with his lyrics. He is brilliant. It's ok to br speachless this one of those unique brilliant songs.
And brother on the right... I LOVE how emotional you were. Looked like you were going to cry -- NO shame there. You couldn't stop shaking. The feelings in your face was raw and perfect. Thank you!!!
"Everybody Hurts" is must! It has this effect of reminding you that you're not alone & not to give up. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful powerful song. ❤ Please take a listen.

I agree with everyone who's suggesting "Everybody Hurts"... Also "What's The Frequency Kenneth?", "Happy Shiny People" and "It's the End of the World as we Know it" are a few other classic REM tunes. IMHO
I love this song and this group so much. They deserved the awards they got for this song. I understand the emotional feeling because it's an absolutely beautiful song in every aspect but it's also very deep. You must listen to the whole album. It's a mandolin
I get emotional every time someone makes me listen to this. Michael Stype is that way with his lyrics and vocals. Thank you for making me listen to this for the 10000th time. Now for some Jackson Browne.
One brother is a deep soul and is deeply affected by music. The other is a singer who studies the voices. An introvert and an extrovert. Both are beautiful.
Got this off of Google.....The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression.
You two remind me of the left and right side of our brains , you are a great combination , a good balance , I am a someone who listens to the words first , of course the music is important but for me the words have to resonate ,
They have so many great songs. It’s the End of the World as we Know It, Crush With Eyeliner, Fall on Me, and Everybody Hurts are great songs from them.
Quoting from Wikipedia: "The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression." I never knew this until last year so I did think it was about losing your religion. But it's not. The video was hard to make and it only came together when Michael Stipe tried out the dance moves. Peter plays a mandolin here.
REM definitely not southern y'all but I find the expression very interesting. I'm from CA but have lived in the South for nearly 30yrs. Very interesting comment, thanks.
Love REM and this song. Live about 15-30 min from Athens Georgia where they got their start. Y'all need to check out their song Everybody Hurts and What's the frequency. Alot of great music by them. Also check out another band from Athens B52s. Rock Lobster (really freaky and groovy) and Love Shack. Won't be disappointed 😊
I love how you both show us the different ways that you can listen to a song. Sometimes you respond to the overall vibe and emotion of the song without listening to the lyrics, and sometimes the lyrics will hit you like a ton of bricks. Multiple listenings can deepen your enjoyment and appreciation of a song. I love this reaction, guys!
In the southern US states, Losing your religion was a term that meant your losing your temper. My dad was from Alabama. He lost his religion a lot, watching football! lol!
Perfect song! It's their breakthrough hit. They have lots of great songs. As others have noted, this is nothing about religion, the title is a set expression. These guys are from Georgia, not your Georgia but the US State! The expression is common in that area.
Orange Crush, Everybody Hurts, Whats the Frequecy Kenneth, Shiny Happy People, and Man on the Moon would all be great follow ups in the R.E.M. list of songs.
This is a 90's release but a good one. I love the fact that ur BroActions r honestly true & touching .. VERY COOL!! Also how it affected each of u in diff ways. "Losing my religion" is a southern expression in the US meaning "losing ur temper" or "feeling frustrated". Another expression we use here that means the same is "I'm at my wit's end" .. lol. Of course everyone interprets lyrics differently & are affected in varying ways by words mainly bc our brains are diff. That's what makes the world go round guys!! I enjoy this song & interpret the lyrics from my "southern" mind so to speak. Thnx George & Patrick for awesome reactions here today .. B safe & well .. peace out✌🏼🤘🏼
Hello guys! I love your reaction, LMR always makes me cry, so I'm with Patrick (?) here. I'm sorry, I'm new here and I don't know the names :) Greetings from Poland!!!
The phrase "losing my religion" is a Southern U.S. phrase. You can compare it to a parent, chasing a toddler. "Oooo boy, you're about to make me lose my religion." It means 'I'm losing it.' You're out of control. Like act outside of being a Christian. Meaning I'm gonna beat your ass. Lol The song itself is about unrequited love. Another person isn't so interested in you than you are of them. So you lose your mind. "Losing my religion."
When I had postpartum depression in 1993 (after the birth of my second child), I listened to this CD with my colicky newborn over and over. The melancholy perfectly suited my mood and mental state at the time. I still adore this entire CD.
Thank you so much for such a genuine reaction. Sometimes music beings out feelings you didn’t know you had. I love that you were honest about what you were experiencing and it helps me learn more about you as a person. ❤️
Well, George, I've never felt emotional about this song - I agree with Patrick. This was the song that introduced me to REM, one of my favourite bands. I love this song and to be honest, I didn't really understand the lyrics too much - I just loved the music. I've never seen this video before and yes, it does have a bit of melancholy about it. However, we all react to music/lyrics in different ways, that's just the way it is. It was very interesting hearing your reactions and how you both reacted to the song in different ways. On a different note, are you intending to do a reaction to a Deep Purple song Hard Lovin Man from the Deep Purple in Rock album? I had this album way back in the 70s and now have it downloaded but I had not listened to this song for ages. My God, it's epic!! About as fast as Highway Star I should say, and I've been listening to it off and on all day. In my opinion this is one of Deep Purple's finest songs with fantastic guitar and keyboards solos. I saw an interview with the late lamented Jon Lord recently and he said this song was one of his favourites. It would be great if you intend to react to it. Many thanks guys, hope you get your happy mood back George!
I really enjoyed your reaction because you each provided a different point of view-- one more cerebral, the other more emotional. The mind is cerebral and emotional, and the two aspects work together to make something larger than the sum of its parts.
Love how good the mandolin sounds on this. Hey guys, have you heard The Doobie Brothers ? I’d suggest trying “Black Water” - it’s fantastic. Or for an exciting live performance -“Takin’ It To The Streets” (1982), a protest song.
*1. The "scenes" in the video are meant to look like Michael Angelo pictures. *2. There's a well known saying that's used especially in the southern part of the U.S. of "I nearly lost my religion!" It means that someone made you so upset that you would do things completely against your convictions!
I think music is meant to heal us so if a song hits me in a certain way & I start crying, then its obviously touched some pain within me so I make myself listen to it over & over until I don't get emotional anymore. Right now I'm working on Save Me by Jelly Roll. I don't think I even made it 20 seconds into the song & I was sobbing. George, I'm sorry for your heartbreak, but it's necessary to talk about that pain to get it out so you can start to heal. We've all had our hearts broken in love at least one time. Things will get better & you'll look back & wonder how you were ever so hurt over that person!
The song is in natural minor. ... The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression
YES. Something deep inside us. Very, very emotional. It doesn’t ever go away. We ARE human. Common thread.
so many good songs by this VERY creative band, so very many
This song can apply to so many situations , love, society, fear all of it the angst of life when we want to fix something when we should let it be and let God work.
Man we didn't know how good we had it in the 90's to have actual real artists producing music and videos like this.
I had the same emotional reaction as the brother in the white shirt. It’s a guy at the end of his tether, for whatever reason. So nice to see someone feel that depth. Love this whole video, the visuals, the music, the vocals, the lyrics, and your reaction.

If you thought this was melancholy, listen to Everybody Hurts by R.E.M
I second this suggestion and then can I suggest after that shiny happy people by them as a contrast ?
@@Kess952 Yes it helped a lot of people.. I hope you are in a better place now ?
Me too - Good suggestion to follow it up it with Shiny Happy People.

I just recommended it just now too.I think everyone needs to hear that song at least once

REM ... Shinny happy people.. great song
“Losing My Religion” is Southern slang term, for freaking out, or losing your cool. or manners. Being unhinged.
Unhinged is a good word to describe the video. Meaningless rubbish but a great tune.

The stringed instrument is the Mandolin, like John Paul Jones uses in several Led Zeppelin songs.

MANDOLIN WIND
I really enjoyed your reaction because you each provided a different point of view-- one more cerebral, the other more emotional. The mind is cerebral and emotional, and the two aspects work together to make something larger than the sum of its parts.
I LOVE that you guys say "Wibe" and not "Vibe" -- I really do!!!
Love how good the mandolin sounds on this. Hey guys, have you heard The Doobie Brothers ? I’d suggest trying “Black Water” - it’s fantastic. Or for an exciting live performance -“Takin’ It To The Streets” (1982), a protest song.
What gets me emotional about the video is Michael Stipes movement as well as his voice.
Next - do Everbody Hurts. Amazing
Song is about obsession. Losing my religion is southern usa term for losing my shit
Omg...heck with the music I love you're accents..wow
Excellent reaction guys. especially if English is not your native language. Shows me the power of music!!
