    Perennial live at Wacken 2019 showcases her vocals going straight from growls to cleans from one word to the next. Plus it's a fantastic song 😁 keep in mind that it is the last song of the set and she is just as good as in studio. The whole band kills it live!

      I agree with Perennial at Wacken is amazing but you gave up the surprise for him already. For voice/music teachers you gotta keep it being the last song in the set a surprise. Just like the chorus in Pisces, it needs to be a surprise. Perennial is a great showcase for her vocal power but Who Is Going To Be The One is an amazing showcase for her energy and joy on stage and the absolute awesomeness that are the band.

    If I want to hear the whole song without interruptions, I'll go to the original video (which I actually did for this same video a few hours ago). I clicked on THIS video because I wanted to hear thoughts, opinions, and some interesting pointers from a music teacher about this song... and that means interruptions. Honestly if I am watching a reaction, I would much rather watch one from someone like MTR. He fully adds to the song and makes you appreciate something you may already like even more. Richard Feynman once said about his artist friend getting angry because he couldn't appreciate the beauty of a rose, "I can appreciate the beauty of a flower. At the same time, I see much more about the flower than he sees. I could imagine the cells in there, the complicated actions inside, which also have a beauty." The more you understand something the more beautiful it becomes. Reactions like this broaden peoples understandings and are a great service. TLDR: keep pausing!

  • @j.f.fisher5318
    @j.f.fisher5318 4 года назад +56

    Great reaction and analysis. Your perception of the meaning is very close to what they have said about their intentions. Forms of authority that are common targets of Jinjer songs include government, corporations, religion, and society at large. They have also mentioned with respect to this song folks online cramming their opinions down everyone else's throats. Vlad does use double kicks. Vlad is the only member of the band with significant formal training, originally in piano, though he plays guitar as well, and obviously drums. Tatiana had a few months of of training in clean singing in school and is otherwise self taught, as are Roman on guitar and Eugene on bass. Vlad's deeper understanding of music theory has helped him play a big role in composition on Micro and Macro. Roman's ability to come up with a seemingly endless variety of riffs, and Eugene's creativity on the bass are great too.
    I'd recommend Perennial live at Wacken next. I see a lot of requests for Who Is Gonna Be The One - it is my favorite song but is about 80% growls. The lyrics are pretty straightforward as a all-in protest song, so it should be pretty easy to follow with the lyrics though. Cheers!

    "The idea behind the song is about people that dictate their agenda by means of their status, position, or just their Internet claim to fame in order to impose their opinion on to others but those opinions aren't based on experience nor knowledge." ~Jinjer
    So yeah, good job on the analysis, at least in catching that it's not really about schools.
    Also, at 11:50, I think that was probably written in 12/8, which is reasonably pedestrian as metal goes. If you really want a hard time counting out rhythms, check out some Dream Theater! Odd time signatures are their bread and butter, with 5/8, 7/8, and 9/8 commonplace, along with occasional craziness like alternating measures of 17/16 and 13/16, or even what's known in prog metal as "stop time", which isn't counted at all, but just *felt* by the entire band in perfect unison with silence in between.

    Given that Jinjer are Ukrainian, I imagine they attended Eastern Orthodox schools. The obvious conclusion is that the lyrics are about Orthodox / Catholic schooling (I'll probably get haters for the O/C correlation, but hey... go read up on the Great Western / East-West / Great Schism of 1054 and quit your whining), and the lyrical imagery would certainly attest to that. However, great lyrics are rarely that simple, and the lyrical imagery here could easily be metaphorical or an allegory.

    • @stfrodric
      @stfrodric 4 года назад +5

      The important distinction is that after the USSR broke up the Orthodox Church entered a resurgent period marked by some serious push into public life. I believe most of the band went to state schools but that the Faculty may have been part of the Church's proselytizing campaign in schools which they had formerly been somewhat prohibited from. A bit of irony, Tatiana is certified in Literature(?) and Eugene in Music which would allow either to teach in the school system.

    The drummer Vladislav is using a double bass drum pedal. Which means you have the right foot pedal, and then another pedal for the left foot that connects to a second beater on right foot pedal via a propshaft / driveshaft. And this in essence gives you a double kick using only one drum.

      Open handed style is most used by right handed drummers (to my knowledge) who wants more freedom and not cross their hands. But ideally you want to adapt to that style before you are 25 years old, and the brain still has some plasticity. In an interview Vladislav says that the open hand style is just more comfortable for him, so my guess is that he adapted to that style pretty early on in his drum journey ;-).

    I'm loving your reactions! Not only are your expressions very telling, but i also like that the majority of "experts" that react to Jinjer, Nightwish and other metal bands are almost always voice coaches, but you are a music teacher! and your analysis includes a lot of other aspects about the songs. Yes, Tatiana's voice is amazing, but the whole band is full of talent and in your videos i can see finally someone appreciating that as well.
    Another thing that i would like to point out is your comments about Pink Floyd. Jinjer can be labelled as a progressive death metal band, roughly speaking, the death metal part would be the growling voice and heavier aspects, and the progressive part is characterized for it's odd time signatures and that feeling of hearing 5 different songs within 1. You know which band is one of the most iconic progressive rock bands? Pink Floyd of course! So your comment about their similarities was RIGHT ON POINT.
    Finally, if you like those odd time signatures and rythm changes, i would love you to react to my favorite band: Dream Theater. Check out their song "Untethered Angel", there's an official video, so just go for that one. I'll suscribe and i'll try to keep you with more metal suggestions that you may like. Edit: totally worth the wait haha

    ...normally i dont care for people stopping the video...but you can stop as much as you want cuz.....that jazzie/swing feel is in every jinjer song...those syncopated rhythms are more evident in every one of their songs than any salsa...lol..to me anyway....and your ear is amazing...the explanation of various parts and overall is spot on and explains to those without a trained ear realize the mechanics of just why they love this band so much........inspirational ....thanks cuz....

    "...so i will SHOW!! SHOW!! what is wrong and what is right"
    I can't even remotely go from TALKING TO SCREAMING in a normal setting ... yet she does it so flawlessly, it almost seems like she just simply has 2 "natural voices" and can use them at will. Most impressive switching I've ever heard in my life, hands down.

    That outro is made so much more beautiful by the context. It’s at the end of a very heavy song, so the melodic section is like a breathe of fresh air. Al that tension from the rest of the song was dissipated. I was almost moved to tears

    That was a nice reaction. I think you are right with your interpretation of the song. It is not specifically about school, but more about authorities that want you to believe everything they are telling (teaching) you and that you should rather have an open mind and think for yourself and not being afraid or ashamed of it. Don't let authorities blame you for not following blindly everything someone else claims being the truth or the only right answer.

      I agree. There are people and institutions everywhere that have their own "gospel" or "bibles" that they insist you must follow whether it's the boss at work, or a political party... you MUST think and act this way! My favorite part is when they all yell "Leave us alone!" Amen.

      The band has stated that the music is about authority in general with school as a reference point. You are making a common mistake of many people who apply their own experience to the song. This is not a bad thing since good music is universal, but you have to remember that the band is from the Ukraine and their frame of reference in regards to authority is much different than most of the western world.

    Fantastic reaction. I have no problems with the way you've reviewed and edited your videos. No need to apologize for stopping. You need to react to what you hear, that's why we are viewing. I really enjoy the depth of the review and appreciate the viewpoint you bring. Everyone sees something different and it's great to be able to see and appreciate something that wasn't noticed before. What you've heard is very foundational to the music that Jinjer creates. They change time signatures, styles, moods, etc. in their music constantly and it is part of the experience because they do it so well. Musically, they are an incredible band (not just metal band) and then they have the versatility of their vocalist to elevate them even further. Cheers!

    So happy to see a music teacher appreciating metal and I loved watching you take all of this in, it brought a smile to my face. I hope this inspired you to introduce some of your students to metal, it's an underappreciated genre by comparison to what is popular with most people. There's so much talent going unheard that it absolutely breaks my soul to think about. Here's to hoping that talent and musicianship come back into style one day.

    Out of all the reactions I have watched for my favorite band Jinjer you sir have the best in my own opinion. I enjoy that you want to find the meaning to there songs but also you appreciate the skill of the band cause so many people who react to Jinjer forget that it's 4 people. You talked about the composition of the song which helped me realize that it's more then just them slamming on their instruments harder and faster that there is a real thought process to there music.

    Another great first run-thru.
    DON'T apologise for pauses. Folk will love your thoughts on something as complex as this. ;)
    Always fun to watch folks' eyes narrow when the juicy 4/4 chorus kicks-in, but Vlad the drummer does his best to have you double-guessing the fact (He's a bit of a composer & multi-instrumentalist who I reckon gets bored easily!) LOL
    The couple of instances of silence in this really do let the sledgehammer drop *so* sweetly immediately after!
    The quiet section with Roman using clean guitar chords to create a soundscape over which Eugene fingertaps some lovely melody with his right hand while his left is glissing up & down the fat strings (I wish I had his chops- playing & composition).... & then Tatiana comes in with one of her softest ever vocals.... *seriously* inspired stuff imho.
    I just never get bored of this song. Considering I don't usually countenance growls & screams (the fact I use Soundgarden album names for usernames tells you what I tend to appreciate in vocal performances), this won my song of the year for 2019. Her choices of vocal in conjunction with specific lyrics means I can make out the majority of what she's "saying" before I have to pull up a lyrics sheet, which is a rare talent from my experience. It also blows me away how worthwhile their lyrics are- when you consider English is a 2nd or 3rd language for them, they certainly put a lot of natively-English-speaking bands to shame.
    p.s. #FcukTheHaters ,altho you seem to tend toward my dour Scotsman motto of #KeepSmilingRegardlessItPissesThemOffNoEnd ,so I daresay they're not getting you down anyhoo! All the best from sunny Scotland. :)

    You’re spot on about the time signature(s). This song has the same basic tempo throughout but they make you feel that same base tempo in so many different ways. Sometimes it’s a basic 4/4, sometimes 6/8, sometimes an extra eighth here and there. Heavy swing feel which you sensed. Great songwriting.
