  • Vortex by Jinjer has been on my radar for a long time, and this time I have gone all out analysis! 💙💛 🇺🇦
Happy International Women's Day 💜 (March 8)! This is a day where we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women in the face on ongoing adversity. Gender discrimination is so embedded into our society that it cannot be broken without conscious, concerted efforts. The time is now to stand up for what's right. The time is now to teach the next generation how to forge a gender equal world. The time is now to #BreakTheBias

Thanks for the educational analysis. I appreciate their music even more now. Tatiana excels at improvisation. The guys create the music and send Tatiana demo recordings and Tatiana finds inspiration for lyrics and weaves her vocal composition into the music.
Just for fun I'd suggest checking out how Tatiana handled the switching between cleans and growls in the Hellfest At Home virtual concert performance where Vortex is the last song, with the only major backing track usage being the line "too traumatic." Home Back is a song they wrote about their hometown getting caught in the 2014 war in eastern Ukraine and which is even more heartbreaking today.

There's actually 9/7/6/4/3 in there. Go by Vlad on his cymbal hits. Also, Eugene (bass) plays a five string. Some of what you think is guitar is not, though Roman (guitar) is amazing. They are incredibly complicated in their sound, yet so cohesive. But that's what you get when you combine jazz, classical, and metal roots together. Love the video.

Don't forget they use Reggae rhythms everywhere. They flow so seamlessly into them that it can be hard to pick them up mainly because what's usually being played over them are classical based riffs. It's very interesting that they've come up with that. It helps in no small part that Tati is very ska and reggae influenced. No that's not to say Jinjer's progressions are extremely jazz based. And at times they go into pure classical as observed in the interlude before the first extended use of growl vocals. Then when the Growls come it's very monotone and theatrically dreading. Probably the best songwriting in metal I've heard in a long time.

This song has no chorus, just a bunch of verses that are played twice and never repeated again, but each one of them has some sort of "hook" that sticks in your ear. I know there's a lot going on in the song to notice this on a 1st listen but now that you know it, I hope you'll give it a 2nd or 3rd listens. 😉
Oh and if there's still doubts in some people's minds that Tatiana records her main vocals in a one-take style most of the time, that part where you pointed out that half of a syllable was clean and the other half was distorted should put those doubts to rest. It would be very difficult to make it sound like that by joining two different vocal takes, even with modern technology.

You should react to Home Back. It was written by Eugene, the bass player, about the conflict in Donetsk, where they’re from, back in 2014. It was an incredibly impactful song then, and the war going on now only gives it more power. 💛💙

    • @durabelle
      @durabelle 2 года назад

Could well be, although it doesn't help me at all in understanding time signatures. My lack of basics in this area means that I don't know what to even count. Drum beats? All of them, or just a specific type of drum? What about songs without drums?
So yeah, I'd need a full video of time sig for dummies, using some songs that make it easy to spot the exact sounds I'm looking for. The math side of time signatures I get, and we used to do some hand clapping exercises in school decades ago. Unfortunately those were never applied to real music where there's multiple instruments being played at once, thins keep changing all the time, the only ones clapping their hands are the audience and even they are not in sync 🤣

My song of the year for 2021. :) *Love* the thru-composed thing here, much more manipulation-of-a-few-motifs-&-creation-of-movements rather than staid verse-chorus-verse-bridge/breakdown-chorus formulae.... & I'm *SO* here for it!!
When you consider what Tatiana does, she deserves more credit for her compositional & arrangement skills: the lads compose the music, with all its cerebral, proggy, angular-timings-with-heavy-syncopation etc, a final demo is then handed to Tatiana who creates lyrics & vocals to sit on top of / interact with said demo. The fact that folks who do not know this is how they do things, all assume she is part of the writing process with the lads "in the room together"-style, is testament to the quality of her work imho.
All 4 of them really are *top-tier* technicians tho- it's like a supergroup, just with *way* less ego!! Treat yourself to a look at Eugene's bass playthrough vid of this sometime btw- it's an absolute #MasterClass using *all* the techniques (personally, I'm jealous of his casually finger-raked chordals!) in all the right places for the song. If anyone wants a lesson in how to make a single-guitarist metal band sound *HUGE* this is essential material. ;)

Those happy claps at 4:43 on the harsh vocals are everything. Based on how you've fallen in love with Jinjer, I get the feeling that you'll *really* enjoy Allegaeon (uh-LEE-juhn), especially Proponent for Sentience III: The Extermination: ruclips.net/video/xixI-q5wFpg/видео.html
It has straight up masterful instrumentation, to the point that my friends call it "guitar porn." There are excellent clean vocals during the chorus (thanks to Soilwork's Bjorn "Speed" Strid,) and punchy, intense growls and screams. To top it all off, the video doesn't take itself super serious, and the song features Professor Stephen Hawking at the beginning.

Your compositional analysis is decisive for the greatest song from the prog camp I have heard for considerable time.
Allow me one comment: I observe the interplay between Roman and Tati as two guitar relationship, where Roman does texture and rhythm, while Tati is doing the soloing with all her different musical and technical styles. Others have commented that there are no guitar solos of Roman in their recent work. Sure, doesn't fit in the compositional context and the jinjerish way of arrangements.

As you may know Jinjer is an Ukranian group, more specifically form Donetsk, as you know there is war right now. But that war is not new for that area, in 2019 they did a song related to war called JINJER - Home Back, itss very interesting because its more direct and aggresive than usual, and obviously very personal for the group. Maybe you want to check it. GGs with the review as always.
