Honestly, Gohan didn't look too confident going into round 2 against Dabra. This was after he refreshed himself with a senzu. In the fight, both looked pretty underwhelming. Dabra used most of his tricks (Illusion, Magic Sword, Spit, Flaming Fireball) and yet Bobbidi was still screaming at the lack of damage he was doing.
Both seemed to be around the same level since both were winded by the end,. Gohan's diminished fighting ability and power really stood out here. That being said, Gohan's powered-up Kamehameha (used on Boo's shell) would've probably been enough to one-shot Dabra if it landed.
I also agree with you on Gohan being a Super Saiyan 2. When Kaioshin told Kibito about his plan to unleash the Z-Sword, Kibito questioned why Kaioshin believed he was capable of such a feat. Kaioshin then says "You were dead, Kibito. You never had a chance to see how incredibly powerful Gohan really is". We know for a fact Kibito saw Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, so why would Kaioshin say such a thing if Gohan went on to use a weaker Super Saiyan form? It wouldn't make any sense.
Aura aside, everything points to Gohan being a Super Saiyan 2.

    • @aeolusedge8575

@@grydon6422 First off, Kaioshin being worried has nothing to do with what Kaioshin says later. He could one-shot Pui-Pui, so it's obvious his fear isn't based on anything rational. Kaioshin stopped Gohan, talked about how hard it was holding his power in place, and concluded that it likely wasn't his Full Power. Gohan went on to show more later. Nothing goes against this.
Secondly, Goku told Gohan to unleash all of his power like he did against Cell. That way, he'd definitely win. Simply turning Super Saiyan 2 isn't enough. He needed to do more.
Gohan was drawn as a Super Saiyan and written as a Super Saiyan 2. And if supplemental material and Super is anything to go by, then Dabra is 100% above any normal Super Saiyan. There's way more pointing to Super Saiyan 2 Gohan than Super Saiyan Gohan.

Where does Kaioshin specfically say that? I only recall Kaioshin saying a vague statement that "he has seen Gohan's real power" and doesn't specify the time period Kibito is dead.
It makes no sense that Toriyama would give Gohan SSJ1 aura in that scene when he doesn't for anyone else.

@@aeolusedge8575 I saw the page you gave before the post was taken down. So I guess I read the wrong translation. The only thing I can think of is that Gohan showed more power when he charged that energy beam against Buu's cocoon. I doubt that he was talking about Gohan struggling against Dabura. @@TonyMishima92 So Gohan was being an idiot then. He was fighting someone he knew could crush him easily, but still thought that holding back was a good idea. Ssj Gohan in the Cell Saga wasn't even a match for Perfect Cell. What gave Gohan, who was weaker than his Cell Saga self, the idea that he would hold up better now after slacking off? Additionally, why would Goku say that Dabura is as strong as Cell if he isn't? Regular Perfect Cell was holding back against his fight with Goku. If Dabura is as strong as the Cell from that fight, then he isn't Cell level. The only logical explanation is that Gohan was in ss2 and Dabura was Super Perfect Cell level. We know that ss2 Gohan is far stronger than Super Perfect Cell, so Gohan slacking off wouldn't mean that Dabura would absolutely beat him. It would also make sense, as Goku would want to compare him to Cell at his full power, not when he was holding back.

  • @Valientlink
    @Valientlink Год назад +36

Gohan would've won eventually, this was sort of his de-rust fight. Goku reminding Gohan of the power he had, to think of the pain of loss, could've really helped. Like "Gohan, this is the guy who turned Piccolo and Krillin into stone! They're also responsible for what happened to Videl!" and he would've unleashed his full power at that point. It honestly makes little sense he wouldn't react intensely over what happened to Piccolo especially, it's like completely out of character.
He freaked out over Videl and yet he doesn't even consider that stoned Piccolo's fate rests on Gohan defeating Dabura? The writing in the Buu saga is seriously really bad in my opinion which is why it's my least favorite of the 4 arcs. I like some parts of it but I generally hate it and I can't say I hate anything about the other arcs even if there are some flaws.

Gohan got pretty damn pissed off when he saw Videl get her ass beat and yet we didn't see any of the characters remark about how much more powerful he got.
In the original manga Gohan's rage isn't this big get out of jail free card for Gohan to win any fight they want like in the newest super movie. Let me show a few battles where Gohan's rage didn't do him much good:
Nappa, Gohan got angry when Nappa killed Piccolo but still couldn't do crap.
Frieza, Gohan got pissed off twice during the second and third forms fight and still couldn't do anything against him.
Future Androids, I think that Gohan might've gotten pretty damn pissed off when the androids killed all of this friends, and yet he still couldn't do anything against them, and not for a lack of trying mind you.
Buu w/ Gotenks absorbed, this was supposed to be Gohan with all of his potential unlocked and I imagine seeing his mom, Videl, his little brother and Piccolo get absorbed probably had him quite pissed off. Still couldn't do crap against him.
However, since now we have stuff like the new Super movie, we know that Gohan's rage can make him as powerful as the plot demands it, so of course we unfortunately have to take this into consideration when talking about a battle like this.

I’ve argued about this for years and I still stand by what I say. Gohan would’ve won. Not easily, but would’ve won eventually. Dabura is stronger than Perfect Cell but not quite as strong as Super Perfect Cell. It took Gohan a push from Goku to tap into his power to finish off Cell, he didn’t do it on his own. Everyone thinks Gohan can do so many things on his own, but he can’t. He never would’ve reached SS2 without watching someone die, he wouldn’t have been able to do it again if he had just watched his girlfriend get beat up, and he couldn’t beat Dabura on his own either due to the fact that he wasn’t getting angry. That’s what would’ve happened eventually, Gohan was just starting to get angry towards the end of the fight, had they continued Dabura would’ve either run out of stuff to throw at him or Goku would’ve reminded him that he’s the reason Piccolo and Krillin are stone right now. Dabura wasn’t toying with him near the end of the fight either, he lost his sword, his stone trick didn’t work, and he kept underestimating him. Gohan wins this fight with getting a push from Goku who wouldn’t have just sat and watched as Gohan almost dies.

My reading of the fight is that Gohan had the edge in terms of strength and speed, but Dabura's magical abilities made up for that difference, at least for now. The only time in the manga that Dabura gets in a hit on Gohan, it's because he used his magic to teleport and catch Gohan off guard the way Goku used instant transmission in their training fight before the Tournament of power. If they were fighting with only their ki and no magic, Gohan would win hands down, and it's only with his magic that Dabura is able to put up much of a fight. He wasn't fast enough to block Gohan's blows indefinitely, and even when using his spit as a distraction to summon his sword and deal a killing blow, he still wasn't fast enough to actually use that opportunity to land a hit. He would need to have a trick which was much more effective than the spit+sword combo to actually take Gohan out. Once he ran out of of magic tricks, Gohan's superior speed would mean he'd be landing far more hits on Dabura than Dabura would be able to dish out, and that would decide the fight without even needing the masenko or kamehameha.
Growing up I thought that Dabura had a kind of super-durability which was far beyond the durability a fighter gets from their power level, because in the dub Goku says that 'a direct attack isn't going to work' against Dabura. Later I learned that in the original Japanese he was only noting how sloppily Gohan was fighting, and even that was filler and in the manga they only discussed how he was weaker, not his fighting technique. The same goes for Vegeta's line in the english about how Dabura was toying with Gohan. In the Japanese he says that the fight is just a game since he could just step in and end it and because he has a more important fight he wants to have with Goku. The dub changed things to make it seem like Gohan was doing much worse than he actually was. The difference in speed is even more stark than it is in the manga during the extended sequence with the sword, because Dabura keeps missing over and over, and Gohan is able to land a few hits of his own even while continually dodging Dabura's every attack.

  • @infinitesheldon5710
    @infinitesheldon5710 Год назад +10

I think it's worth pointing out that, in a purely martial sense, the manga implied Gohan was Dabura's superior. Gohan had Dabura completely on the defensive at the start, and landed that big kick. After that, all of Dabura's counter attacks were entirely through his magic. The fire breath, the illusion, the magic blast, the spit, the sword. Dabura didn't seem confident that he could win in a fair fight against Gohan, and was pulling out every dirty trick he could. And even with all those tricks, Dabura wasn't really damaging Gohan much (Buu wasn't getting any noticeable energy from the fight). I'm pretty sure that, as the fight wore on, Gohan would start getting more of his muscle memory back, and most of Dabura's tricks would be less effective the more often they were used. If Gohan were able to keep in close and keep the fight more hand-to-hand, Gohan would wear Dabura down. Either that, or a well-timed rage boost should be enough for Gohan to ultimately win.

I think that Gohan actually fought as a regular Ssj. His body wasn't used to staying in elevated levels anymore. So it would make sense for Gohan to conserve some of his energy in that fight. Basically so he can use Ssj2 when he is with the back to the wall.
That would make Gohan able to fight a Cell level fighter in Dabura without Ssj2. And that is totally possible. Goku was able to fight Cell as a regular Ssj. And the manga actually hints at Cell Saga Gohan being stronger than Goku even before he transformed into a Ssj2. He just didn't have the fighting spirit before that.
So if Boo Saga Gohan had more of a fighting spirit than his Cell Saga self (and we know he had that because he now was totally fine with fighting other people and possibly hurting them), I can totally see Gohan keeping up with a Cell level Dabura without Ssj2 for some time.
So in conclusion, while Gohan definitely was unable to defeat Dabura as a Ssj, in my opinion he still has Ssj2 as his backup plan for the finishing move. And that's why I think he would have won.

Vegeta takes it as an excuse, becomes the next fighter, and fights Goku on the ship right then are there
(Likely with Goku wishing to fight Dabura first but Dabura hinting at a new fighter for them, to Shin’s dismay)
Things are dire, but Shin tries to reach Buu, likely after healing Gohan with the last senzu on hand
Then Gohan and Shin, fully aware of the stakes without the hope neither Goku nor Vegeta would be at full power rematch Dabura, except Dabura would be drained from the previous fight which would force both him and Babidi to showcase more magic but Buu is ultimately revived
And Vegeta probably still gets himself killed after likely auto killing Dabura but being a second too late (gohan wouldn’t need to flyaway to the ship again, and it’s just more convenient narratively otherwise everything goes exactly the same) leading to gohan and shin leaving per vegeta’s request and now we have a damaged shin, gohan, and unconscious goku fleeing with newly awakened piccolo, krillin, and the boys to do who knows what with given the time chamber exists

Great informative video as always, though I'm gonna have to disagree to a varying degree. I don't think Gohan (w/o plot armor) could beat Dabura, and I don't think he was a SSj2 either. Let me explain.
    1. One really can't argue whether or not Gohan is a SSj2 against Dabura based on design. There are instances in the manga where Gohan is SS1, but still only has 1 bang. His base form hairstyle is far too similar to his SSj forms to distinguish the differences IMO.
    2. It is clear that when a Saiyan achieves a SSj form (I'd say 3 and above is an exception), they have to master summoning their rage and transforming into said form at will. This is why Future Trunks asked Goku if he could transform at will (and you can even see this through various movies such as Cooler's Revenge and Bojack Unbound despite being non canon). If Gohan didn't train those 7 years post Cell, then one could assume that Gohan did not master transforming into a SSj2 at will, as there's no reason to believe he did so if he didn't even train. This would explain why he seemingly goes SSj2 in the tournament but not against Dabura. Yes Videl is healed by that point, but at the same time the Z Fighters knew little to nothing about Shin and Kibito and for all they knew the Kais were accomplices of Spopovich, and it doesn't erase the fact that she got brutalized in the first place. So with that in mind, I don't think Gohan calmed all the way down instantly. It would be enough to where he should still have varying degrees of anger, but not to the point where he was during Videl's match. For all we know Gohan's body isn't conditioned to handle SSj2 without an anger/adrenaline boost, as it becomes clear when someone doesn't train, their control over their SS forms is shafted (Resurrection F anyone?)
As for Dabura I don't think he was using most of his energy output like you suggested, I think it was far lower (maybe even 50% or lower). While I do think that being suppressed CAN make it so that your energy reserves don't really drain, I believe that you would have to be using an extremely low percentage of your power - practically a finger's worth. Even while suppressed you can still run low if not run out of energy, otherwise Cell wouldn't have needed a Senzu after fighting Goku (despite heavily suppressed against him).
I'd say that Gohan became strong enough to fight a heavily suppressed Dabura in SS1 because of the Zenkai boost he received from having his energy drained, as when he heals up he says he feels stronger than ever - on top of the fact that Dabura is toying with Gohan.

Dabra would have won. People don't realize just how much weaker Gohan was in his SS2 state. Simply put, he was trash. The absolute most charitable evaluation we can give him is 30-40% of his original power against Super Perfect Cell, and that's only if we scale Dabra to that version.
If we're being honest, they are probably talking about Cell during the games. If that's true, Gohan is a joke

Gohan's hair and aura during the fight with Dabura show him as a SSJ2. I think the reason there's no lightning is like you said, that lightning around a character was used in DBZ to show how strong that character is. When Gohan is fighting Dabura, we're not supposed to be impressed by his strength. This fight was meant to show that Gohan hasn't been training. This is also why Goku says that Dabura is similar to Cell. We know Gohan beat Cell, so if Dabura is similar and Gohan can't beat him, then we know he has become weaker. It's all about how we are meant to perceive the character at any given time. This is the same reason why Vegeta has a lot of lightning against Majin Buu, but not so much against Kid Buu. He didn't stop going SSJ2, it's just that the Kid Buu fight isn't about Vegeta anymore. It's about showing us how much stronger Buu is now. I think if you look at instances where a character has lightning in their aura, it consistently happens at times when we are meant to view the character as very powerful. Just like Nappa. When Goku went SSJ for the first time, there was a whole lightning storm going on around him. It symbolizes the raw, wild power he's tapping into and shows us that he's about to f**k some shit up.

I've generally gone with Dabura as the more likely winner. If we're going to replay the fight lets say 50 times ignoring how events were designed to play our (or enough to get a solid percentage), I feel that Dabura would win more of the times. This is because if we look at the two fighters being roughly equal in power and stamina, the deciding factors would be unique techniques & battle skill/readiness. Dabura has both of those over Gohan. All the Demon King needs to do is get lucky with the spitting technique to get the quick win, where as Gohan would need the fight to go on long enough and have something significant prompt his rage boost. Along with that, he'd also need to remain focused during his rage boost to still not get kicked in the dick & spat on, which is something historically not present with him at this point in the story. Even later on after the old Kai's training & power unlock (which supposedly allowed him the ultimate form's power without the super saiyan rage), he got cocky with Super Buu allowing him to get bested by a weaker opponent (relative to himself at the time) using a technique that wasn't even as instant as Dabura's spit.
Also, if we think about this from a writing perspective, Gohan's not looking to come out with a clean win. That's why he didn't. Dabura is either gonna do heel things for a slimy win so that Goku needs to save him later on (like what ended up happening later on with Gohan getting absorbed during the fight with Super Buu), or something like the fat Majin Buu's hatching was gonna interfere with his fight with Dabura.
It's like, Dabura wins if we cut off and ignore the rest of the story, and nobody wins if we let stuff play out which is why Gohan was put in that position writing wise. He wasn't put there to get pointlessly cockblocked from a clean win.

Gohan was so far out of Perfect Cell's league Cell couldn't even tickle him. Gohan with only half of his Ki remaining(I interpret this as only having half of his energy reserves, not literally half of his power output) was able to overpower Super Perfect Cell when he stopped holding back and Cell got distracted.
The reason Super Perfect Cell was able to damage so Gohan so easily was because Gohan rushed in to protect Veggie without bracing himself or focusing his Ki properly to block, and likely also wasn't expecting Cell's power to have increased so much, since before Cell couldn't even tickle him despite Gohan putting no effort into it.
From my perspective, Gohan would have had a little bit of difficulty with Super Perfect Cell had they fought eachother normally. Like he would have had to actually try a little bit, but he still would have won handily.
If Dabura = Super Perfect Cell, then Cell Games SSJ2 Gohan definitely would have beaten him without much trouble

Super Perfect Cell wasn't massively more powerful than Perfect Cell - maybe a 30-50% increase. This makes Gohan saying he's lost half his chi (even if an exaggeration) make more sense.
Dabura would have won. With your own metric, by the time Gohan vs Dabura ended, Dabura's clothes hadn't been damaged at all. Because Gohan has to constantly watch out for Dabura's spit, he couldn't go for strong committal attacks that would open him up.
It's interesting to note how strong Future Trunks was vs Dabura. His SSJ form kept up with (in fact, looked like he was equal with if not stronger than) Dabura; but of course when Trunks went SS2 it was over.

And judging from his fight with Buu, he's not likely to get mad enough for a significant rage boost. Hate to say it, but at the beginning of the Buu Saga, Gohan was a dweeb, both physically and more importantly mentally.
As for the SSJ vs SSJ2 debate...I think Gohan was a SSJ2 and Toriyama just forgot to draw the electricity. If he was just SSJ, I'm sure Goku and Vegeta would mention it when Gohan was having trouble plus Dabura, as someone stronger than Super Perfect Cell (even Perfect Cell would be too much), would've murdered him.

Gohan with no doubt in my mind would have won the fight against Dabura without Vegeta's interruption, Goku himself said that during the fight Gohan was regaining his battles senses and his power only kept growing while fighting Dabura.
as for Gohan's Rage Boost; all that would have taken was Dabura threatening to make him watch as everyone he cared about was to be turned to stone and then shattered which would have triggered his Super Saiyan 2 and then a one-sided beatdown would occur to the point that Goku would have to likely hold Gohan back to calm him down.

Only a few things to add:
*Vegeta helped Gohan defeat Cell. Toriyama didn't include Vegeta blasting Cell (and Cell reacting to it) for no reason. My take on that is that Gohan and Cell were probably about even, but that blast gave Gohan a chance to win. If Vegeta had blasted Gohan there (lol), Cell would have killed Gohan IMO. It's a very even battled, I'd put them at the same level.
*In the Japanese Manga, Goku says something like "Well, Gohan isn't completely losing to Dabura!" Then after, while both are tired, Gohan needs a Senzu because he used up a lot of power. Dabura doesn't demonstrate any healing, but he's ready to go later. In fact, he's certain he'll win. I think these exchanges make it clear that if Gohan preformed against Dabura in round 2 as he did the first time, he'd lose.
*Goku tells Gohan with his anger, he'd beat anyone in the world. He says that with Majin Vegeta right there, 6ft from them. Goku's views on Gohan's anger, IMO, are that Gohan is > Goku or Vegeta if he let's his emotions go. And honestly, based on Vegeta's early statements, I think Vegeta might agree with that. Gohan though, might not see it that way. I think it's more likely Gohan thinks he'll get back to his level against Cell.
*When Buu is first hatched, Dabura dismisses him as pathetic. Gohan thinks Buu is powerful, but if he can tap into his true power he can overcome it. That hints at Dabura > Buu (Initial) > Gohan (easily accessible power). Buu obviously demolishes both of them, and Kaioshin, once he powers up, but the power he first output was low enough Vegeta was unimpressed.
Taking this all together with what you discussed, I think Gohan had no chance without his rage, and a nearly sure victory with it. Even if their power was on par, Dabura's fighting skill would have allowed him to easily wear Gohan down, as well as his strange moves. With his greatest power, Gohan's strength would have been overwhelming and he'd have taken Dabura by surprise. Baring a loss to some strange technique, I think Gohan could have certainly handled him.
    Thanks for the wonderful video!

One thing to consider when comparing how well Dabura and Gohan did against Fat Buu is that Gohan wasn't at 100%. Yes, Goku gave him a Senzu to eat before going to Babidi's ship with Shin to face Dabura again. However, he burned through a lot of his energy blasting Buu's ball with a couple of Kamehameha blasts and ki volley attacks to hopefully destroy the beast before he emerged.

Seeing as how he and Dabura were pretty evenly matched, hed probably have some "I have to do this" moment and power jump over him for the win.
Likely the only reason he didn't beat fat Majin Buu was simply to him him being too much, too soon.

I'm not sure I agree with the point that the Saiyaman outfit is the first outfit that reflects gohan. In almost every instance gohan is given the chance to pick his outfit he chooses piccolo's "demon" clothes. Most exceptions involve situations where his demon clothes are trashed or he needs something expendable/durable like in the time chamber.
The Saiyaman outfit was made by bulma (on gohan's request) to help throw people off the scent. I don't really look at that outfit and think: "Now that's classic gohan". That's just an outfit he wore to keep people away from his family.
What does gohan wear when he's training Goten and Videl? That's right, the demon clothes again. Any time gohan gets to decide what he wants to wear it's the demon clothes.
Mystic Gohan actually asks for the Turtle Gi. That's actually kind of a big deal. It's the first time he ever wears that outfit by choice.
    Super:
    1. Dad/Scholar outfit: street clothes
    2. Track Suit: worst thing gohan's ever worn for the worst depiction of gohan ever seen.
    3. Turtle Gi: This really seems to be his go to outfit for most of super so far. It's strange seeing as how he spends a lot of that time working very closely with piccolo in the tournament of power etc.
    4. Demon Clothes: Back in the demon clothes for the new movie. Not sure the context but it's a Gohan/Piccolo movie so it's very appropriate.

I think Gohan saying he couldn’t be the same as he was against cell could be referring to not wanting to be over confident when he releases all his power….however when he becomes Ultimate Gohan he is cocky as hell. So who knows.

Everything in Buu saga would be different, but Dabura should've been stronger than Majin Buu at first, and a threat to earth just as great. He would be built up, then when super Buu is reborn, he would fight him. Destroying him twice, but after the 3rd Regen Buu would have adapted and Dabura would have spent too much ki, and died the same death as a cookie.

I'm gonna say Dabura would win because 1. this is slacking not-particularly-raged-or-cornered Gohan who 2. even during his peak Cell performance DID take hits every now and again, and it was a matter of time before one Dabura spit landed where it needed to and 3. Dabura still seemed pretty confident he could take out Gohan, and Dabura is an experienced fighter unlike Cell. Majin Buu awakening when he did probably saved Gohan's life in the end, honestly
