I'll say it was MOSTLY because Goku prioritized sparring with Piccolo over Gohan because Piccolo was a stronger and more experienced fighter, Goku wanted to push himself harder. Plus, Chi-Chi was definitely pulling Gohan away for studying constantly.
Now, why Gohan got so much stronger in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber was merely the enhanced gravity (Gohan had NEVER trained in enhanced gravity prior to this) and Goku focused exclusively on Gohan this time. Before, two major factors held Gohan back and then two major factors pushed Gohan further forward.

    • @JohnnyDominion

I always saw it as Gohan was always subconsciously holding himself back. In the anime at least he had to finally want to get stronger in order to make the jump.
Gohan was never really naturally violent or aggressive like his father so he never had that inherent desire for more strength.
Training is not only physical but a mental exercise you have to want to push past your limits. Like when ypur body says it had enough 20 or 30 push ups is your max but you mind tells you tp keep going break your limitation. Just get 1 more you say then just 1 more than that.

I think Piccolo had a massive head start on Gohan to begin with. Judging by where they were at on Namek, and that 1-2 years passed between Namek and Trunks arriving. Gohan didn't train at all but no doubt Piccolo did. Widening the gap even further.
Chi-Chi reluctantly gave in, but in the end let Gohan train, with the deal being he focuses purely on his studies after the androids are dealt with. I can't remember about the anime, but looking at the manga now it doesn't say anything about him having to study now and then.
I feel Gohan managed to reach Goku's base level post 3 year prep. It's just Piccolo got closer to Goku's SSJ level. Once Gohan reached SSJ himself he quickly surpassed Goku. And most of the time in the RoSaT was teaching Gohan not only to turn SSJ, but how to MASTER it. Sure the sparring and the gravity and other environmental conditions helped. But going from base to Mastered SSJ is significant all by itself.

    • @kopo7466

@@EndoScorpion It never explicitly says whether she did or didn't pull Gohan away to study, but this IS Chi-Chi, she's insanely stupid and ferocious. So much so that she's willing to let the Earth be destroyed, so long as Gohan gets an education (so much is said in the anime and manga). So, Chi-Chi definitely interrupted and interfered from time to time.
I definitely don't argue that Piccolo made HUGE gains over Gohan before Goku returned from Namek, Gohan was studying constantly and laxed on his training. Hence why I firmly believe Goku crutched on Piccolo more for training to hone his abilities over Gohan. Gohan made some gains, but nothing significant to Goku and Piccolo.
I also won't argue that Gohan reaching Super Saiyan opened up ALOT of his potential, but it still took time before he surpassed Goku. The one on one between the two of them TRULY unlocked his potential. If Gohan was left to his own devices to train on his own, he'd be a duplicate of his future self from Trunks' timeline, stunted in his growth and potential.

    Hey Mike.
My headcanon for that is mostly because of what he heard from Trunks. I think when Goku decided to go back to earth he already have intention of training Gohan for him to become SSJ. But when he heard from Trunks that everybody dies and Gohan, even as a SSJ coudn''t defeat them, Goku probably realized that version of him that dies with heart virus also trained Gohan the same way he intended.
So now that they have a chance to change history, while still training Gohan he was also training Piccolo (and Goku was probabling thinking that the Piccolo who died for the android, was not close to his SSJ form also). So by basically putting Piccolo close to his max power, Goku could become more powerfull quickly. With that Goku could also preparing Piccolo in case he were to die again (even though Goku received the medicine, don't know how secure he was with that) so Piccolo could guide Gohan to change their future.
What makes me think that in when Goku recovered from the disease and nobody died from the androids but they still are a threat, Goku first thought was to make Gohan SSJ. and at the same time he was calmer because of Piccolo`s power (now fused with Kami).
Since the future was changed he can fully guided Gohan to a better one while having backups (Vegeta, Trunks and Piccolo).

Because the plot didn't say so. Gohan (like a ton of other characters) mainly get a big boost in power when they need it. If they aren't relevant to the plot in that moment they really don't gain much power. Look no further to Gohan's rage boosts. He jumps from like 3 to 1,000+ against Raditz which is well over several hundreds of times. But only doubles his like 2,000 against Nappa after Piccolo dies. Or jumping I to the millions against Frieza.

Then krillin on namek became stronger than the ginyu force who legit are the second strongest to frieza. Just let that sink in. Krillin became stronger than every sayian in only 2 months.
The whole point of training for 3 years was to show that no amount of training could prepare them for the androids.

My theory is because Gohan only trained for less than a year with piccolo. He still needed to build his basic skills and foundation up more.
He was also still very young roughly 6.5-7 years old after Namek so his body wasn’t developed enough to handle high levels of power for long periods.
By the time we get to the ROSAT he’s around 10 so already a pre-teen, with a more developed body to handle high amounts of key on top of that that training from the 3 years likely allowed him to have much better ki control compared to when he came back from Namek.

He should've already been there - but maybe needed the inspiring moment. He was already at Goku's level (from the Saiyan Saga) after Guru unlocked his power. He then got at least one zenkai boost, and was able to challe ge Frieza at every level. So with three years of training... how does he not get to the point Goku and Vegeta did to reach SS - unless it was psychological? If I understood correctly, it didn't take long for him to turn SS in the time chamber. Seems like they should've been able to reach that moment where he went over the edge during the three years with him training with Goku and Piccolo, who were stronger.

In the manga he says during Gohan’s first appearance “I know he has the power but Chi-Chi won’t let me train him.” And in an anime exclusive scene we see him use it to destroy a tree as a baby. Plus, he saw him use this power against Raditz.
Goku said Gohan’s hidden power began to “awaken” in the chamber. But he knew about it for years by this point.

When goku and vegeta ask Piccolo to train with them, Piccolo said that his body wouldn't be able to keep up with them... lol! Guess training with weak ass Gohan was more convenient. The dragon ball universe is just full of bad writing. Trying to connect dbz logics with super is near impossible due to the gap between the storyline and new ideas that came along. Gohan in battle of God had his ultimate form but by RF could only go ssj? B.O.G and RF are like a year apart right? So how did he got soooo weak? The z fighters needed senzu beans after battling frieza soldiers is just another weird flaw in my opinion. Namek vegeta was able to destroy thousands of freezers men in the past. Besides tagoma and that red bull looking soldier everyone else was weak and should not require senzu beans after fighting them.

I always find it funny that Gohan always seems to have this hidden potential that constantly needs to be unlocked just for him to get stronger, and it's because he limits himself. Which is probably what happened in the future Trunks timeline. Where Gohan didn't stop holding back against Trunks, unlike what Goku did with Gohan in the hyperbolic time chamber.
Great video, sure these could be answered right away, but it gives a better foundation to point to evidence within the story to back up your claims. Creating a more solid argument. Keep it up.

It's because potential is a moving target. It's how powerful you can become at that time. By training your body and ki, you can raise your potential. It's not a cap on how powerful you can ever become. Strict limits like that are pretty antithetical to what the series is all about, pushing past your limits and constant self-improvement.

I think Gohan did get stronger during the 3-years of training, he just didn't get to show off his new strength since he didn't get to fight as much as the others. But I take the blow he gave to Gero as proof of his improved strength and it's even acknowledged by his Mentor Piccolo who asked for his help rather than anyone else's. Instead protecting his student, he had faith in his strength and believed he could save him, which he did. Striking a blow to Gero's head, stunning him a bit (I think) and knocking of his hat, just his Dad did earlier to stop him from destroying the city; a perfect father-son mirroring if you ask me. Anyway, if Gero was stronger than Mecha-Frieza (which he is) then it's clear Gohan had grown stronger from his training just as Goku did if they could both strike him like that where as three years ago they would've needed their Rage Boost or Super Saiyan respectively to even match Frieza, but that's just my opinion.

Pretty sure he DID get stronger but he just wasn’t able to show his power. Even so, amongst SSJ’s and Piccolo his power would have been insignificant anyway. Although it was off guard Gohan was the only one to touch Gero apart from Piccolo. If the V-Jump power level for Namek Gohan of 200,000 while not enraged is true (and why not? It should line up) then even him reaching Namek arc base Goku level is a massive boost and considering he was training 3 years with a SSJ and Piccolo level character, that should be very possible.
I’m not saying Gohan was even with or above base android arc Goku but they both had the same thing happen with Gero: both caught him off guard, both knocked his hat off, but Gero was more visibly stunned when Gohan did it. He even looked like he winced in pain when he can’t even FEEL pain.

I think Gohan's base level during the Android saga after training with Goku and piccolo was stronger than both there base level combined but because of Goku's 50 time multiplayer Super Saiyan form it would not matter. Also if Piccolo was able to figure out a similar technique to kaioken with Gohan base level being higher than both Goku and Piccolo it wouldn't matter because of whatever the multiplier is to whatever new technique piccolo may have used on Android 20.

I always thought it was because the Hyberoblic Chamber gives many advantages that you can't have in the real world.
    1. The time chamber can go through dramatic shifts in environmental conditions such as extreme heat or cold at the drop of a hat meaning it will push you hard enough to just survive
    2. The time chamber you don't have to be as careful when in the real world, sudden explosions and power ups won't run the risk of causing massive environment and collateral damage. So the Z Fighters do not have to be as cautious so they can improve mich better.
3A. Also given the time chamber is a void of nothing that frees you from many distractions from the real world but will also test your sanity. Given that much time in solitude with no comfort zone can be challenging for the mind. It calls for strict concentration since the mind needs social inelteraction, a change of environment, familiarity that you need to feel at easy.
3B. However being too distracted can prevent you from improving training is not just physical it is a mental exercise you need to push through it order to surpass your limits. There are too many distractions in real life that can be counterproductive so the time chamber can offer freedom than that but it can also be a double edge sword.

Who said he didnt get stronger? It was never stated he didnt get stronger, if anything it is more implied he trained thus getting stronger during the androids pre rosat. I dont see how you would think otherwise. If anything it shows he kept up until a certain point with Goku and Piccolo due them focusing on being able to take out this dark future threat individually as adults in the situation. If Goku had focused on Gohan more directly and made an effort to teach him ssj instead of later than hell yeah Gohan and Goku would have got stronger. Remeber they got ridiculously strong after Gohan unlocked ssj, Gohan had rapid growth in the time chamber due to the gravity, climate intensity, and a new unfound potential due to a new form. All these things were giving in the material as to why he got vastly stronger than when on the outside during the 3 years. The only people who honestly looks impressive to their pervious selves were Vegeta and Piccolo in reveal of the android sections. Goku, doesnt look that impressive, Gohan didnt show anything beside literally knocking a ssj+ level fighter off of another(showing he got stronger😅) and everyone else including Trunks show no relevant progress lol

Gohan isn't a natural until he's angry, plus he was a kid. I figure he actually got to work on strategy and rebuilding a stronger foundation as a martial artist.
Almost every other character in the series pursued martial arts from a very young age. They also loved martial arts.
Gohan doesn't truly enjoy the art of fighting until he's older, but I swear he was the one that actually enjoyed academia.

The main focus of those 3 years was to get Goku (and Picollo) stronger. Gohan was there to add an extra difficulty to Goku, since the gap with Picollo was massive. I'd say that Gohan's power did increase a lot during these 3 years, however he still lacked the super sayan transformation. One could even argue that Goku chose to train with Gohan (instead of Trunks or Vegeta) because he saw just how much Gohan improved in those 3 years.

I feel like Toriyama set up Gohan’s transition from the very beginning of DBZ.
-He rages and knocks the shit out of Radditz
-Piccolo throws him and he blasts a hole thru a mountain (which was an extremely substantial feat at that point considering he was completely untrained)
-He manhandles Frieza briefly in both his 2nd and 3rd forms
Vegeta wonders how Gohan got so strong suddenly and Frieza comments about how strong he is and should keep an eye on him (which is why Frieza initially targeted Gohan after the spirit bomb when piccolo jumped in front to save him. He knew Gohan was possibly a greater threat than the rest of them).

  • @LagunaFox

I feel like the anime actually shows the training for the androids better. You see Goku and Piccolo sparing and then Gohan tries to get in there and he just gets smacked down by Goku and they go back to sparring until Gohan manages to get back up. Everyone was kind of trying to improve themselves versus cooperating to make sure everyone got as strong as possible. Goku and Piccolo have a large amount of experience to draw on to figure out how they could improve as they trained where as Gohan didn't have that, so without specific instruction like when Piccolo originally trained Gohan or when Goku trains him later in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber I feel like his training is just far less efficient. And who knows how much Chi-Chi ended up interfering with Gohan's training as well.

  • @SamsarasArt
    @SamsarasArt 6 месяцев назад

The simple answer is both the location and the training itself were much more intense in the time chamber. Gohan only became a super saiyan when Goku attacked with killing intent. Not to mention the situation was far more desperate. So even with 1/3 less time, these factors explain why Gohan became so much stronger.

I know people might argue about this (Cannon wise) I would honestly use dbz kakarot for a more in depth analysis. I mean, people use manga and the anime as an example for feats and scaling of a character, but side quests in that game seems to give more info then the anime, manga, even writers statements could.
Like the side quest where gohan fought yamcha
Wouldn't take every side quest legit though, but some are considered, in my opinion, is worth noteing.

tl;dr version: I'd say Gohan did get a massive boost. Piccolo and Gohan just had a massive headstart on him. I'd say Gohan would've reached close to Goku's base level, while Piccolo reached close to Goku's SSJ level. Once Gohan got SSJ he quickly surpassed Goku. The time in the RoSaT was mostly about unlocking and then mastering SSJ.
    ---
The RoSaT training was a massive boost for all the characters that went in at this time. Vegeta and Trunks went from being dominated by 17&18 to dominating Semi-Perfect Cell. Piccolo went from on par with 17 (and dominated by imperfect Cell) to on par with a Cell Jr (which was closer to Perfect Cell levels). Could argue his RoSaT training gave him a better boost than the fusion with Kami did.
Having said all that... I don't think the 3 years training prior to this wasn't for nothing. Gohan would've still got a massive boost from it. But consider where the characters were at before this:
    - Gohan was much weaker than second form Frieza (could only match him with a rage boost). He got a zenkai boost after Dende healed him, but I'd say he was still weaker than Piccolo when he showed up. Gohan never fought or trained again up until Trunks arrived and the 3 year prep began.
    - Piccolo out-matched second form Frieza even with his wieghted clothing on; forcing frieza to transform again. Piccolo being Piccolo no doubt kept up his training in the 1-2 years between Namek and Trunks arriving. Putting him even further ahead of Gohan.
    - Goku in his base (with help from Kaioken) was able to put up a good fight against final form Frieza, but needed SSJ to dominate him. He continued to train in that 1-2 year time gap also.
After the 3 years preparing for the androids Piccolo was able to reach levels close to / on par with the SSJ's (Goku and Vegeta) at the time. Multiple characters make a comment on this and Piccolo's performance against 20 was similar to Vegeta's against 19.
Gohan was still not on this level, because he didn't have SSJ himself. I reckon he might've been close to Goku's base level. Still below it.... but close. Which in itself is a significant improvement from where he was on Namek. Once Gohan got SSJ he was close to Goku's SSJ and didn't take long to surpass him. The main issue with Gohan is his mindest. He doesn't believe in himself and thinks Goku will always be stronger.
On top of getting SSJ (which in itself is a massive multiplier) Gohan under the guidance of Goku learnt to MASTER SSJ. Which is also significant.

Overall I think you are on to something Gohan after his time in the wild getting to understand and use his power knows he's strong but not the strongest. Once he shakes off his fear he's not afraid to jump into a fight even against a much stronger opponent because he feels he can't just sit by and do nothing. I think this is something they could have played with in the Android saga as he knows he can't keep up with Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, or even Trunks but when Goku says he's the answer to beat Cell it just is so inconceivable to him that he is front and center and could win or something along those lines. Because him saying I'm a pacifist is such a copout that even Cell just calls BS on him which for a villain to be right really isn't great.

I like to think that Gohan and Broly are able to unlock new forms and power out of nowhere is more of a genetic trait than anything. If you notice when it happens it's not because they are wanting to be stronger it's out of necessity to survive. Since Saiyans are biologically able to obtain new powers it's possible that Gohan and Broly may have some kind of genetic mutation.

Gohan being a Saiyan and Human has a higher growth than both race alone in such a short time frame. Remember, the Namek Saga was only a few months. And look at how powerful Gohan has gotten in that short amount of time.
My theory is that Goku and Piccolo wasn't focus on making Gohan stronger during the 3 years training. The two of them were focus on making themselves stronger and were just using the others to help them do that. Gohan doesn't know how to make himself stronger. He needs someone to pull it out of him as told by Piccolo many times throughout the course of Dragonball. He's not thinking about strength, he's not thinking about the next level. The way Gohan thinks prevents him from getting a massive increase from training. So even if Gohan was training with Goku and Piccolo, they didn't help him bring out his power. They were more focus on themselves. This also explains why Future Gohan is so weak despite having the potential to surpass the Future Androids within 2 to 3 years of training.
In the time chamber, Goku is now focus on Gohan and bringing out his powers. That's why he got a huge increase in that 1 year over the 3 years preparation.
Even years later, Gohan still doesn't know how to get stronger on his own. Piccolo has to help him out with that.

Interesting but I highly disagree. I think Gohan trained every day during the 3 years, with his two dads and possibly got at least one ZB each year (the father as well). When Goku came back I gave Gohan 4,000,000 (yes I scale powers). Which means that by the time of the first battle he should be at least 10 times stronger. I also speculate that the human fighters sparred with Goku and Piccoro and got so strong. What I think Piccoro meant when he said, they should be at least on Freeza level or not to appear does not mean base power it means max power.

How strong was Gohan on Namek? Was he around Vegeta's level from the saiyan saga? Even counting Zenkai boosts, it wouldn't be anywhere near 1 million in his calm state. Even if he caught up to goku's base after the 3 year training, its still nothing since he couldn't transform. And because of super saiyan, their base could be 15 million against cell, which still doesnt seem like a lot considering everyone else's max power in that arc.

The Gohan at the start of the Android saga coulda been weaker than his Namek self. He most likely didn’t train until after Goku got back from Yardrat and prior to that, he had only trained once in his life. So his body prolly couldn’t even hold that same level of power as his Namek self. When we look at Buu saga Gohan, he was definitely weaker than his younger self until training with Shin. Very likely this was case with him in the Cell saga. Difference being, Goku actually bought all of his potential to head. Shin, put him back on that level and Elder Kai then unlocks the rest of his potential and he’s just now starting to bring it to bear in Super. But I digress.
So he was initially weaker than his Namek self and didn’t get the “dedicated” training in the 3 years. Like u said, he was still also just a base saiyan.
It took for things to unfold for Goku to realize Gohan was there only hope and once he woke up, he dedicated the rest of the arc to bring it all out.
On your last point, Gohan is still setup to be the main character. AT just has to pull the trigger.

Gohan did get a bit stronger, but most of the three years Gohan spent with Piccolo and Goku teaching him to properly fight. Remember, in the Saiyan Saga, Gohan spent most of his time doing survival training and less than six months training with Piccolo. Then The Namek saga took place like a week later. Over those three years, Gohan finally got the time to be trained for combat so he doesn't freeze up all of the time. He even learned how to do the Kamehameha properly. No more Masenko for him.
