  • We last examined the large and diverse fleet of Lufthansa in 2022. Since then, the carrier has grown slightly while diversifying further with the addition of the Boeing 787. This video will cover the state of Lufthansa's fleet in early 2024, while highlighting the changes that have taken place over the past two years. We'll also look ahead to the future to see what's next for the airline.

    I love Lufthansa and the fact they still fly examples of all the modern era quad jets, but they seem to have one of, if not the most diverse fleet of aircraft in the world. LH❤

  • @jgnclvgmng5408
    @jgnclvgmng5408 Месяц назад +7

    They keep the quad-engine planes because they have a lot of premium seats on those, that Lufthansa manages to keep highly occupied and they return a ton of money.
    The diversity of the fleet is incredible. Perhaps they want it so that Lufthansa Technik can have a lot of different planes to learn how to service. Otherwise, just managing pilots and crews between such a diverse fleet must be a headache.

    I'd love to see Lufthansa expand their 787 operations. I know LAX is already getting the 747, A380 and will be getting the A340-300. But I'd love to see the 787 there on livestreams and I'm sure plane spotters would as well, it's a gorgeous aircraft.

    I like how Lufthansa's group ordered/operate every single current gen/currently on sale aircraft model besides the a330neo. I see no more hope for that plane at this point, as their current a330s will likely get replaced by the 787.

    • @rx3dn

      A330 will get replaced by the A350-900

    • @mstrmren
      @mstrmren Месяц назад +6

      @@rx3dn That's not true, the A350s will replace the A340s in Munich while the 787s will replace the A330 which mostly flies out of FRA. The 777X will exclusively be stationed in FRA where it will replace the big A340s and 747-400s, while the 747-8s will be kept in service for the time being.

    • @frylucas
      @frylucas Месяц назад +3

      The A330neo is meant to be a cheaper alternative for Airbus-heavy airlines that can't afford the expenses of maintaining an A350 fleet or have a considerable fleet of A330s and want transition to a more economical aircraft while still keeping costs low (as they can maintain spares, little crew training, etc), they don't need a Lufthansa order for it, it is mostly designed for LCCs and lessors like the original A330.
      It works amazingly well at Delta, TAP Air Portugal, Azul Linhas Aéreas, Corsair International, Condor and ITA Airways to name a few. Given the cost of the project was so minimal, just the 300 or so planes they sold has more than returned the investment.

    • @rx3dn
      @rx3dn Месяц назад +1

      @@frylucas The A350 is cheaper than the A330 though? Yes, it costs 17 million more, but the maintenance and fuel is much less compared to the A330. While offering more range, efficiency, lower maintenance cost, and being bigger.

    • @frylucas
      @frylucas Месяц назад +3

      @@rx3dn That's not true. The A350 is mostly built from composites, that's considerably more expensive to maintain, and it's also considerably heavier than the A330 (251t MTOW vs 285t MTOW), that means higher airport fees. Not to mention lessors are going to be charging extra premium on A350 leases where they won't for the A330neo.
      Here in Brazil, Azul tried operating the A350, and they just returned the 2 planes they leased to the lessor because they couldn't afford the premium on the lease and the maintenance costs of these planes.

    I prefer 4 engine aircraft for long over water trips!! I miss the 747 that many airlines have swopped for the 777 and 787. If I can fly on a 340 I would be delighted because they are much more comfortable than the carbon fiber planes that ride like an economy car. Great report!!

    I would say that there is only one major thing i disagree with when it comes to fleet composition.
    Getting the 787 and the A350-900. Personally i would have chosen only the A350.
    Ordering the 777(X) and 737MAX already, the 787 is one too many different plane type.
    As for the quad jets, i agree, it's nice to see them fly a bit longer, the only thing issue i see, sadly, is the spare parts
    dilemma with regards to the A380, having to scrap perfectly good planes right now already, just to use them for spare
    parts is not a good sign.
    All in all, let's hope the delivery of the planes, from both manufacturers go as intended, Boeing wise with the QA being as high as it should be, and Airbus with regards to the engine issues, sadly that is the biggest issue Airbus faces, and that's not even their own fault, other than maybe not picking a second, or third, engine option on some models.

    Lufthansa reminds me of Ansett, which was Australia's biggest domestic airline in the late 20th century. Ansett had a couple of every type of plane available, and they were dubbed the Noah's Ark airline. But having to train pilots and mechanics to work on 10 different types of aircraft as well as the vast number of spare parts required, ultimately sent them bankrupt. Other airlines in Australia and New Zealand learnt from this and they now operate as few varieties of aircraft as possible. But Lufthansa appears to have forgotten this lesson.
