Why Airlines Like Emirates Could Never Reduce The Quality Of Their Services

- There is no doubt that the big three Middle Eastern legacy carriers (Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways) offer some of the most luxurious premium cabins in the skies. From business class cabins that offer double-bed arrangements to fully private suites, Middle Eastern carriers are almost in a league of their own when it comes to quality and comfort. Even their cheapest level of service - economy class - is often a much higher quality than the long-haul economy classes of other airlines.

Isn't this exactly the same issue that the various ocean liner companies had in the 1930s? Their ships had to be bigger, faster and more luxurious than the competitors.
Same, but only emirates wants bigger.
As an aviation enthusiast, the journey is everry bit as important as the destination, so I'll take a stopover every time. I've taken advantage of stoppers offered by Etihad and Turkish Airlines, and both were pretty amazing!
I love the stop over at the Hamad International Airport in Doha Qatar. 2-4 hours in the pool and then food at the Al Mourjan lounge make me ready for the next flight.
I don’t see pool
For any transatlantic flight I always use either Qatar Airways or Emirates. The level service they provide is so good for the price you are paying. And to be honest, I absolutely enjoy the layover in Doha
I think one of the big differences is how they treat people in economy.
British Airways might do nice premium, but their economy offering leaves a lot to be desired compared to the Middle Eastern carriers. The seating density is like something of a low-cost carrier in economy.
This is not something you would expect of a legacy carrier on long haul.
You only have to look how British Airways layout the cabins on the 350 compared to the Middle East carriers .
Western airlines have shit service, even white people think it's horrible.
Currently most Airlines compete on providing Busines Suite products
Hypothetical scenario. If I could, I'd go back to Zambia. I'd have to change anyway flying out of Dublin. If I was to go by Heathrow I'd need to go somewhere like Johannesburg to Livingstone, Lusaka or Ndola, depending on which part of Zambia I'd be going to because BA don't do flights to Zambia anymore, as far as I'm aware. That would require 3 flights to get to Zambia and I don't know how long between each flight. If I was to go with Emirates I'd have a layover of 8h 45m in Dubai but I'd be in Zambia in 2 flights. I think Simple Flying did a video on accommodation being available for long layovers, so that'd take the sting off the wait. My choice of these two options would ultimately depend on how close my ultimate destination is to Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN).
there are two main factors regarding this question - time and money. How much time the connection will be and the price ticket. If the price is cheaper than direct flight and if the connection is less than 2 hours, it can be a good and better alternative.
I have flown from Etihad and Qatar Airways, and I can vouch that their flights from the US to their respective Middle-Eastern hub, viz. Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively, were top-class. They fly new planes that always appear fresh and new, with comfortable seatings and nice service. My Etihad flight from Chicago to Abu Dhabi flew an Airbus A-350 that was less than a year old.
Their onward flight to India from that Middle-East hub wasn't so good though. Planes were relatively older, and were not as well-maintained as their US counterparts.
4:25.. there are other reasons besides longer flying times as to why passengers would want to avoid Air India.
I agree😂😂
It should be noted that while the ME3 have some disadvantages compared to say flag carriers from Western countries, they do have a couple of advantages over them in terms of operational costs which partially offsets the extra cost they face by providing a higher level of customer experience. First, the ME3 have ready access to the lowest cost fuel (and which is a domestic product of the countries they are based in). Second, they tend to source their cabin crews and ground hub personnel from poorer countries and therefore enjoy lower labor costs. As such, they don’t have to deal with the high labor and fringe benefits costs and have to negotiate with flight attendants’ unions like say British Airways or Delta do.
An interesting analysis which is more applicable to European travellers than Australian flyers. From a personal perspective, my spouse and I have flown from Melbourne to LHR on a Qantas B 787 and return in J and enjoyed it immensely. However on a trip to San Sebastián with Qatar via Doha and Madrid, the on board amenities on the B 777 were fabulous. Returning from Paris on an A 350 with access to the lounge at CDG at 6 am, followed by the lounges at Doha and Singapore were superb. Option to fly one direct route with Qantas does come at a premium and future Operation Sunrise flights will similarly come at a significantly higher ticket cost. So, for this regular traveller, a code share Qantas/ Emirates return journey to and from Europe is the ticket with a great metal service in the A 380 and the Middle Eastern on board cosseting all the way.
Just used Emirates from UK to Indian Ocean . Chose them because they used the 380. Next holiday with Qatar to similar direction because they are using the 350. Hopefully they don't disappoint as the connecting flight is nearly 5 hours on a Qatar 320.
Why did you want to land in the ocean?
You’re so right, if we have to stop somewhere I would choose a Middle Eastern airline if the price isn’t too high from other stop overs.
With any international trip I make, so far only for pleasure, I first have to fly to a hub with such international routes. Given that, I try to stick with the same airline from start to finish, or a partner airline if my first airline does not fly to my destination, so that I deal with as few airlines as possible if there is a hiccup in my journey, such as a delayed flight resulting in a missed connection.
Being Amsterdam based I much prefer a 1 stop AF flight instead of the nonstop KL flight, when flying long haul. Because of the better service, and the extra xp on Flying Blue is a welcome bonus. Win win for me.
The problem for me is that when I fly from Dublin to Kochi in India is that these 1 stop flights are significantly more expensive than 2 or 3 stop flights. Also other than the ME3 I have to switch airlines during my journey if I go with another option like air India. Because in order to get to kochi I’d first have t take a flight on aer lingus or BA or Ryanair to London and then switch airlines to BA or Air India. It’s just more work and takes significantly longer. Honestly I don’t understand why there aren’t more direct flights from Dublin to more countries such as India or China.
I am old enough to remember when flying was a pleasurable experience when sitting in any class. (I miss that period of US aviation history.) If I were to fly to the Middle East for that bucket list trip, I would fly on a Middle Eastern carrier instead of a "cattle car" with wings.
Remember when most of the public couldn't afford to fly back then? I do
Cost, overall flight time and arrival/departure times are all I look at and it's usually in that order. Before the pandemic, I would fly AUS-UK once per year and have flown the 3 mentioned here, Thai, Cathay, Qantas, Malaysian, United and China Airlines. Emirates were the choice when I lived in SYD only due to a flight that left at 6am local and arrived the same day around 4 or 5pm LHR time with the stop-over in Dubai. That was trying to maximise the time available in the UK but if the cost was prohibited then a 1 stop with one of the others came into consideration. Service has never been an issue on any of the airlines I've mentioned other than Qantas. It was so bad I don't fly them anymore (inc domestic) unless I have no choice in that. The best service I've had is on China Airlines via Taipei though. Knocked them all out of the park in both Economy and Business. Qatar was a really close 2nd though if I needed to rank them.
I too have flown the Emirates 6am departure from SYD to LHR and it is horrible. It arrives in London at local 8pm time, not 4 or 5pm as you suggest. I refuse to take that again and opt for lengthy 1 stopover flights. Much more relaxing journey.
I’m a bit of an Emirates fan. Never had a problem with them and as a Silver FF member get some good perks. The business class is not as fab on the 777s but it is easier to upgrade to it on points
I am planning my my trip to Australia from Texas and want to fly with Emirates. I rather fly from IAH-DXB-Sidney then a straight shot from IAH to Sidney. Might be a longer trip but on the return trip I have a 20 hr delay in DXB and can go sight seeing for a day.
I've been flying qatar doha-iah many times. I love it. My note for you on the 15hr trip:
After a while toilet gets quite dirty. Choose the middle toilet instead of the rear.
If you're an aviation geek, bring sunglasses and binocular or good camera. The view outside is exhilarating. From mountainous desert, to the farms of eastern europe, the green forest of scandinavia, iceland (if you're lucky), the ice mountains of greenland (right window seat to see this), the american landscape.
If you appreciate the view, you're in for an adventure. I always pick the right widow seat. Come early before the the counter opens to be te first in line to request your seat for free.
Have a great flight.
Btw at iah there's a flight by new zealand 787. I think it's a pretty boring flight since you're mostly over the ocean.
It’s all about comfort
makes sense
Is there any viable competition in the Premium Economy segment anywhere?
the concern is consistency on luxury they offer: if you are buying a premium product, it should be the same on all routes
!
great video very informative. Are Etihad and Emirates both UAE state owned? In which case are they truly competitors?
I much prefer to fly with a connection if the non-stop flight is over 10 hours as I find sitting in an economy seat for that length of time very uncomfortable. I’m retired so the fact that the overall journey time is longer doesn’t concern me. But for a shorter long-haul flight, e.g. the UK to the east coast of N America, I’d rather fly direct than via, say, Iceland.
A furtherl point concerns which airport in the UK I’m flying from. I live in N England so using Manchester is much easier for me than Heathrow. It so happens that for flights to Asia, Manchester’s flights are largely through a middle-east hub. Again, I’d rather do that than slog down to Heathrow and back.
In my case i prefer the stop over. I could fly MAD-LAX but i would much rather fly Air France or Delta with a stopover in CDG than fly in the horrendous American/Iberia economy class cabin. I would much rather fly in comfort and with pleasant cabin crew on longer flights then get to my destination sooner on an awful airline. Unfortunately i've never flown with a middle eastern carrier as they don't offer the routes I need but I would surely like to give them a try.
If i had the choice to fly direct i'd do it if it'll be cheaper.
When i fly to the US, i want to have my connecting flight stop OUTSIDE of the US so the final destination can be the first time i set foot on US soil, due to the customs and baggage issues.
Should there be problems, with customs, i don't want that effecting my connections, so i'd choose the same approach for the example flight to India.
I've flown Qatar for all African and Asian travel, and their business product is always incredible. They are truly 21st centruy PanAm - a new golden age.
Wow, who would have guessed competition works!
Has nothing to do with competition. If Middle Eastern countries didn't subsidize their airlines to offer a more luxurious product and longer route at the same price point, then they wouldn't be able to compete with European or Asian airlines flying direct.
I would with Eithad Airlines.
The 3 Middle Eastern legacy carriers will not reduce their service quality, particularly in premium seats, because it's their difference. It's these seats that make their profits not the cattle carrying flights and seats. As long as they have people who pay for them in the quantities they have now it's a burgeoning business.
The A380 was a godsend for them, and they will miss them dearly once they can't fly them, because the level of service and amenities they can provide on that plane will not be matched for a long time. And yes there are a lot of people who'll pay for that, and will miss it.
As for Turkish competing with them, they don't have the demographics for that, it's very doubtful they will be able to do it.
I recently flew from Arizona to Bangalore in Feb 2024. I flew on Qatar from San Francisco to Doha to Bangalore. It was the best choice for me...faster and more economical then flying from the East Coast of the USA. The Phoenix to San Francisco to Doha to Bangalore route worked best for me.
I live in Thiruvananthapuram and what they stated is true af
This opulence really differentiates middle eastern carriers from others. Just simply glance at their suites or business class services, the way you are treated as a king by obsequious servants.
for me, with children a single long journey broken into 2 legs is more refreshing and manageable. If traveling for business or alone a single leg can be opted.
odd that you would call Emirates a “legacy” carrier as they are a young carrier that acquirednits market share by giving better service. it used to be that Bangkok or Singapore were the connecting hub of choice with liberal flying rights for many airlines. (look at australia to europe flights before Emirates).
with closure of Soviet airspace, all hose non stop routes are harder (more exownsive) to maintain while Emirates’ hub is conveniently located.
What is odd about emirates is that they diwngraded their 777 to narrow 10 across seating on their 777s which need tonbe avoided for lomg haul.
Etihad and Emirates aren't part of any airline alliance, limiting the usefulness of their loyalty program. Plus, they're only useful for Asia/Oceania to Europe/Africa travel as crossing either Pacific/Atlantic ocean skips their hubs. I always choose to do a short hop to a European/Asian hub before taking a 15-hour direct flight because I can sleep for 8 hours straight in red-eye J. Chopping the trip up into two 7-hour portions with a 1am layover is terrible for sleep. I'm satisfied with J in LH/SQ if it means more hours of sleep, transferrable points and usually a lower price.
Except emirates is cheaper than sq and much cheaper than lh
The Emirates and Qatar Air links are The Best company The world.
Depends on who pays for my ticket. Office will always seek for the lower cost option, requiring a justification for a more premium airfare - so no fixed answer here. But if I were to pay for my way, I’ll pay the extra money for better service, not necessarily a direct flight.
But they reduced seat width on their 777ers with a cramped 10 abreast configuration
If the direct is cheaper then I’ll take it but if there are two similar priced options between a Middle East airline and another airline where both are one stop then I’ll take the middle easterb
If you have to change flights it is not worth some small perceived difference in quality (The video only contains commercials), it can be several hours longer journey and spending time in transit is expensive as well. Lets hope for more direct flights.
Direct always
Comfort over flying time, anytime.
As a guy from Thiruvanathapuram, you nailed the pronouncing. Most Indians don't pronounce it right BTW.
I just want to get to my destination as quickly as possible
The Dynamic is very simple. Fuel is highly discounted for the Middleeast carriers.
It is not just the fuel price. Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai also do not charge the ridiculous environmental taxes that European hubs do. Also, their labor contracts do not have all of the legacy pension obligations that European carriers do. Lastly, they hire cabin crew based on aesthetics and hospitality instead of seniority (looking at you, US carriers with your terrible unions and "our primary - read only - purpose is for your safety".)
Not "almost" in their own but they ARE in their own league
Not quite. Do not forget Singapore Airlines.
Even East Asian carriers run very good services. The question should therefore be: why can't North American and European carriers improve theirs even after charging a premium? And it's certainly not wages because Emirates, Singapore and Etihad pay their personnel well.
Turkish Airlines ❤
these are five minutes of my life I am not getting back.
Flew on Emirates’ A380 2 summers ago on business class from Milan to Dubai. Overall hard product and soft product were decent, but I found their catering to be subpar, unfortunately. Last summer, I traveled on Qatar Airways 787 and A350 on business class, and I noticed the huge gap between the 2 airlines. Love both airlines, but Qatar is ridiculously better.
Agreed. On a flight departing DXB, I was served a few croissants for breakfast in Business. It was so subpar compared to any other airline I have flown with.

As a Saudi, I can say that even my airline Saudia has improved their business class product so much in all aspects, that it’s almost Emirates’ level, if not better in some cases. Saudia used to be a really bad airline at least a decade ago, but they’ve changed a-lot since then.
Another note, as a citizen from Riyadh, I’m really curious and excited for Riyadh Air. Just hope Boeing’s issues don’t heavily affect Riyadh Air and Saudia, since they’ve placed a big order for 787s a year ago. Riyadh Air A350s, maybe? Hopefully.
@@gyo900 Curious to fly Saudia one day! :D
@@yitian
To be safe, make sure to fly from Jeddah to any of their destinations in Europe or North America. Saudia’s inflight service is inconsistent depending on the continent being served. Jeddah to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, or Paris are good ones, since you get to fly on their 787s. Hope you enjoy!
@@gyo900
I’m looking forward to seeing Riyadh air in the skies. I hope they do well too.
Those white seats will love like a makeup remover cloth within weeks
I would love to route through the Middle East. The problem is that if I connect through Dubai or Qatar, I add 24 hours of travel one way.(I would typically stop at Dubai or Qatar on the way back). Once in a long time, maybe. But every trip? It makes more sense to take other airlines who can get me to my destination sooner.
Emirates has reduced the quality big time. It's not worth it anymore. I used to fly to India for £1750 round trip, but after Covid, the price shot up to £3000. Now £1750 is premium economy price. The business class lounge used to have lots of food and drinks buffet, Food selection has been reduced but now you have to ask for everything, even water. The onboard food isn't as good either. Etihad I can get for £1600 business well worth the price
Don't forget the direct long haul flights do a number on our bodies as well, getting off in Dubai or the middle east even for an hour makes recovery much easier not to mention if you have kids your definitely going to need the break.
They have too. Otherwise why would I stopover in the Middle East if I didn’t have too
Lol Emirates is Good but Qatar is Overhyped thier Crew Beheaviour & Service changes Drastically depending upon where you are heading. Like When I took them from Doha to Frankfurt I was satisfied that Finally I found another airline apart from Emirates/Etihad ( I Had a Terrible experience with other Gulf Carriers that time ) which provide quality service.
But then next year 2019 I took them from Doha to Delhi and then Doha to Colombo in 2023 : And Oh boi the difference in the Service and Crew was Significant like I Traveled ECONOMY during my flight to Frankfurt during my Doha Colombo I flew business yet the Service was terrible not as per a Airline that Claims to be best. Food was Served cold , No Crew Interaction between the whole flight , Asked for Water while I was Having the meal the crew didn't came for 15 min at last I had to go and personally ask ( The Head Crew Did Apologize tough at the end of Flight).
But main issue was the Loo ( Someone had Clearly Missed the Target and It was Smelling Bad really Baaad )
On Delhi Flight Didn't encounter the loo issue but again served cold meal.
Qatar’s Business class q suite is still by far the best out there. Excellent value. You can find awful reviews as one off on any airline.
Airlines like BA dont have to innovate because their biggest selling point is Heathrow. It's slot controlled and BA own a big chunk of those slots, and London sells itself, it's a place people want to go to/live in, so BA being based there and having the most routes from there is a key selling point. By contrast the 3 sandpit airlines have to convince you to connect in their desert shithole, since few people want to live or even visit those places. So the only way to convince you to fly with them and differentiate themselves is their luxury products and innovation.
Isn't the relationship between BA and Heathrow pretty love-hate? Or even hate-hate?
lol few people want to visit or live in those places??? lol the tourism figures as well as insane number of British/european/ American expats suggests otherwise. This has only increased post covid. You make some good points, but they’re diminished by your clear bias & use of words like “shithole”. Show some class mate.
More comfort for me
12 months before Qatar introduce premium economy 🙂
Singapore airlines: Am I a joke for you?
Personally, I am not comfortable with very long haul flights and would rather take a break of 3-4 hrs
I would generally prefer a non-stop flight. If the travel is for business, all connections are waste of time and don't add any value. If the travel is for pleasure, the Middle East is just a glorified desert with nothing really great to enjoy I would rather stop over in a place like Mauritius which has real natural beauty. Else go direct to the destination country or region and take a local train or ferry from the nearest airport that has a direct flight from my place.
Reducing quality means giving away customers to competitors. When there isn't space for their ticket price to be further lowered.
Hmmm with Russian airspace closed, might as well go via the gulf if heading to SE Asia, all the nonstops will be diverting that way anyhow ....
Paris to kl doesn’t go through Russia. There aren’t many routes that go through Russia. East Asia yea, not sea
Honestly, of all MENA carriers, I prefer Turkish above all else. Easy to get to the Balkans, Caucuses, Central Asia, and the Levant
I prefer single stop and more comfort
Stop over for superior experience. Hands down.
8:28 none, I fly Qatar all the time because I live in Qatar. Yes, I got really lucky that I am from a place where they have the worlds best airline and I’m flying on it without even realising, I really appreciate that and am lucky to come from a place like Qatar
Luxury is relatively cheaper to make in Asia due to cheap labourers and lack of work related regulations .
Comfort and convienece is the reason I prefer ETIHAD foy travel from Europe to India and return.
Seems very similar content to before
But why there is a need of a Middle East low cost carrier😂Yeah...talking 'bout you...Wizz Abu Dhabi
Middle Eastern and Asian airlines have made a mockery of American air carrier air travel.
As an American, I am disgusted by American air carriers. I fly Emirates. Every chance I get. At hard, Asiana, Philippine Airlines, Korean air, Japan, airlines, and ANA all are superior to anything American carriers have to offer.
The A380 for example has completely made Boeings 747 look like a joke. The A350 has made Boeing 777 look like a joke.
Boeings, poor safety records and cost-cutting have all but put the final nails in their coffin.
But even when you get to the service aspect, Asian and Middle Eastern carriers are far superior. They only hire beautiful women to be stewardesses. One an American Airline you get all types of rundown dregs, including the men. Bad attitudes and unfriendly sneers on their face.
I’ve flown on Emirate’s business class twice: once to say shells and once to Maldives. I flew on their economy class to Thailand, and it was still superior service to anything that the American air carriers had to offer.
The flight between JFK and Dubai is 12 1/2 hours. For that 12 1/2 hours, Emirates makes you feel like a king.
Trivandrum is my city
Etihad > Emirates
Etihad has the residence that isn’t possible on any other A380!!!!
Isn't the residence just a private restroom?
Oh yeah something that 0.001% of travellers will ever use

@@d.b.cooper1 Well there’s still a chance to use it now
If you can afford it...@@ultralegendarybeast101
Yes they can, just under another banner. I.e. Flydubai which is a low cost by the same group.
Qatar or Etihad doesn’t offer Premium Economy. And Emirates have just introduced it so I disagree with your first statement…
Air India, once an admired airline was ruined by arrogant politicians. Nationalisation destroyed discipline, efficiency, business sense and brought in sloth, high cost of operations, corruption and humongous government interference. Taxpayers were loaded with the burden of losses that ran up to billions. Some kind of privatisation has now happened and the new management is trying to resurrect the mortally injured airline. We wish them success. There is huge demand for air travel from India and flag carrier with long range planes and a good product can recapture business being lost to Middle Eastern carriers.
I was in Barcelona airport about 6 months ago. The Emirates crew were lined up at immigration, all looking beautiful and smart. The a Delta crew lined up behind. They looked totally like Tracy. Fat 60+ year old men, and they were just the cabin crew. Clearly middle eastern airlines take pride over their appearance and branding.
If I had to go that way, definitely the more comfortable option. Sure direct flights are more convenient, but air travel, especially in Canada and the US and even some of Europe’s legacy carriers, is just AWFUL! Pay for bags even on international flights, pay for wifi, even sometimes pay for food! Combined with inhumanely small space, disgusting food, And downright rude flight attendants. I realize profit is super narrow in airlines, but at the same time, passengers appreciate a little bit more comfort, and the Middle East offers this, for not a whole lot more price wise than say Air Canada. if I have to fly, and I think I speak for everyone, I would much rather have a stop over and be treated like a king, than fly direct for barely anything cheaper and be treated as borderline a piece of cargo
Emirates economy is more luxurious and worth paying little more for long haul flight from Mumbai to DFW . Good veg meals
Who wants to fly a European Airline instead of EK, QR or EY?
People who wants direct flights, D'oh!
Not everyone wants to have 6-8 hours layover on airports without any place to nap in between.
People who dont support humanrights violating countries like Qatar and UAE
Members of the European carriers' frequent flier programs...
I prefer direct flight
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM ❤
Yes
Direct. I hate flying so why stretch the experience out.
Whatever lets me avoid Heathrow.
Emirates business class in the 777 is rubbish in its 2-3-2 arrangement and is disgusting when you’ve booked your flights around 1-2-1 seating on the 380 then get changed at the last min. After using them years we don’t now we go direct EVA business , not that they would ever care
American airline carriers are a shame when compared with flying Emirates, Qatar or Singapore airlines. I have nothing but praise for them. I have not flown Etihad yet. DXB is outstanding.
US cattle car flights charge high prices for very low service.
As a comparison too, American inner cities are wastelands of graffiti, crime, and poverty. It is a shame. So why would American airlines not be a reflection of the same ???
If you've ever lived in the middle east, you should know that a life of luxury is second nature to rich Arabs.
Stop Over & Emirates
they treat their workers like slaves
Etihad are rubbish, compared to Singapore, Cathay or the likes. Also Abu Dhabi airport is horrible for a stopover compared to Singapore
I have seen some recent videos (Josh Cahill) showing that Qatar Airways is pretty bad
Qatar airways wants only positive feedback, if someone gives negative feedback and shows that in internet they bans. What a corrupted airline and country🙄 Also humanrights are not good in middle east countries..

At the end of the day, everybody's looking for the cheapest option. Because of their labor laws in the Middle East they can get away with cheaper ticket costs.
What kind of shameless advertising is this 😂
