Holy shit. I was at that concert with my wife when we were just 17. It was our first date because we'd only been together a couple of days at that point. We just celebrated 20 years together on the 1st of August. That was a crazy show.
Congratulations 🎊
So cool dude!
What an amazing first date. Also Congrats
Cool!
Congrats mate

Like he put all of the anger about his situation in Metallica at the time in his performance.
Just look how Newsted singing that shit with all power, and look at Kirk
only Jason can do that \m/

@@ardengoyda day and night, brother, day and fucking night...I miss Jason...
What the hell are these harmonies 17:03?? I'm hearing it for the first time and it's F*ckin AMAZING!!
The fucking backing vocals Jason Newsted
sounds pretty emo and gay to me, not the way the song is supposed to sound, imagine if slayer sang die by the sword with kerry king adding a vocal harmony, metallica fresh off the load albums of the 90's an all time low point
@@IncantationNYDMI like you a lot lmao
Please be kidding. That was your first time? Really?
Pretty sure their using backing tracks as there are 3 guitar parts at some points like I disappear. There's the harmonic, and the squeel and power chords are sustaining through eachothere which is not possible with only 2 guitars.
One of the best Jason's performance in the DIE, DIE, DIE... i ever seen. He is a beast. I saw the first two songs and he is on fire...

"No Leaf Clover" is such a great Song, also lyric-wise. So overlooked in their cataloge. I wish they would release a Studio Version of it one day.
Wow... I never heard this version. It's great
The No Leaf Clover you hear on S&M1 was actually recorded in the studio with audience added, so yeh it is a studio version 😉
It. Should be used in a marvel movies
@@jonathanmarkos5526 s&m was a live event they just added those effects on james' voice in post
@@explodingegg123 ik that S&M was/is live, and with most songs on S&M1 that is what happened, they just edited in post but No Leaf clover and maybe Human they actually fully recorded in the studio afterwards
Jason’s backing vocals are awesome ❤️
The crowd being muted was weird as first, but a few songs later I felt like it was my personal concert lol 😂
Happy Birthday Papa Het!
not Muted it's the soundboard feed
Yeah, most of the time when you hear the audience in a live recording it's because they actually set up mics just to record the crowd, but they didn't do that in this case.
Metallica releasing old concerts is probably the best thing to come out of this pandemic so far. Funny thing, I don't mind his clean vocals anymore.
@Thomas Klein Slayer's archive has to be LOADED
Hell yeah ✊
While I prefer his '89 era vocals, I suppose clean vocals are the price to pay for vocal longevity. We don't him sounding like Axl "Mickey Mouse" Rose or Vince "Dying Cat" Neil.
Remember loads of people saying with s&m1 there was NO WAY James could hit the high notes on clover live..... that sounded absolutely incredible and this is pretty raw audio with the vocals turned up
It sucks they auto tuned it so much on S&M. He really didn’t need it at all here.
Listening to this old shows makes me realize that how amazing Jason is. What an underrated bass player.
I think the total opposite, he sounds to dry compared to Trujillo. I can care less about backing vocals.

Jason sitting there with lars and smiling in the end... Wow 3 months later he was gone just like that
I think James was the main reason for Jason leaving. James at a very low point.
@@Simon-oe3xp Lars and Kirk really supported Jason's Echobrain project, it was James who had a problem with it because he felt Jason should've just been there for Metallica and then he eventually gave Jason the ultumatum of Metallica or Echobrain and well we know how it turned out
@@fedora997 yes, i know. :)
I wonder if james ever jame evr regrets that decision
@@KenaiTobin I think he is glad with it. Unfortunately, the hate he had towards Jason is also a reason he relaxed much upon stage. His well known agressive appearance at the end of the eighties and nineties came of his annoyance with Jason. Compare his stage appearance at the Tour in support of Ozzy with that with the Puppets Tour with Jason in Canada. Big difference..
Metallica had two amazing voices. Together they created something magical.
I was there and they blew the lid off the Starplex that night. They went above and beyond with the 2 free shows to make it up to the fans that had went to see them at Texas stadium for the Summer Sanitarium tour. Starplex is less than half the size of Texas Stadium and it was so awesome of them to do 2 shows so everyone that had tickets to the show Het missed would be able to go and see them at full strength. They performed a full set list and still gave us 3 encores. I was at the show Hetfield missed at Texas Stadium and was pretty sad when I found out he wouldn't be performing with the band, but they had a lot of help from a bunch of members of the other bands and it was still a good show. I've seen them live 7 times but the Starplex free concert holds a special place in my heart. It was definitely an electric atmosphere. Fast forward to 2019 and at the age of 43 I was able to take my wife and 3 daughters who at the time were ages 15, 14 and 10 to see them in Lubbock TX. We had floor tickets and were about 12 feet from the stage for the arena show. My wife and I spent the whole show taking turns holding my youngest up so she could see and at different points throughout the night every single member of the band acknowledged my little girl who was smiling and waving and cheering on her daddy's favorite band with a wave and a big smile of their own. Her favorite memory of the night was at a point when Hetfield had come to the mic right in front of us while playing Sad But True. My wife was holding her up as high as she could and she was cheering and waving with both hands and Het started smiling while he was singing and then waved at her with his pick hand without missing a beat in the song. The crowd around us went crazy for my little girl and for just a few moments she got to feel like a Rockstar herself. They're not afraid to show their fans love weather its a free concert to make up for a missed performance or the acknowledgment of a little girl in the crowd that gives her a story she'll tell for the rest of her life. This year before the lock down my oldest daughter wanted the DJ at her sweet sixteen party to play Nothing Else Matters for our Daddy Daughter dance and I realized at that moment that this music has been the soundtrack of my whole life. Metallica is Family...….R.I.P E.V.H.
Oh my God, the synergy between James and Jason is amazing. For them to be falling out not much longer after this, it's surprising how buddy buddy they seem to be. When James did back-up vocals in Seek and Destroy, it was powerful. Rob is amazing, but the chemistry here was never achieved again. Jason was an asset and its obvious how much he was limited in Metallica when you see him shine live.
The musical chemistry between James and Rob is better - but stage and vocal chemistry is all James/Jason for sure.
I miss Jason, to me he was Metallica's edge during liver performances!
I miss you Jason, you did the best Metallica moments!!!
"Fade to Black" played a bit more slowly than usually and throwing in some extra-notes in in-between chords, makes it beautiful, I like it a lot this way
Sounds great. Jason really rules the bass and his backing vocals are immense! Miss him so!

Nice!! I envy you! 😆
I was there too! Amazing show. While the Summer Sanitarium Show was cool to see other bands standing in to play with Metallica, this was one of the best no-nonsense shows I ever went to.
I was at the original show without James at Texas stadium. Where was the make up show held at??
Was at the StarPlex
I was at the original show at Texas Stadium, I always wish footage existed of that show because I think we fans had destroyed that stadium by the time Powerman 5000 was on. I just want to re-live the visual of those seats being thrown around again. I knew about the make up shows, but I was stationed at Ft. Hood at the time and couldn't make them.

Jason was at odds with the band at this point but you'd never know from his intensity.
He had the passion. Maybe he was too intense for them to begin with. Look at them now, they play too loose, all for the name of having "fun". You can still have fun and be tight with your playing.
@@FlipGuitarist80 well they are all over 50 now, you can't pretend they have the same energy of 20 years ago. The only fact they still play and even release new albums is already a lot, not every band does it. They still give much better music than actual "artists"
@@FlipGuitarist80 in the early days they were intense anyway. But after The Black Album era they started playing with a more looser feel where as Jason kept up his level of intensity.
@@fabio0352 Every time someone makes this excuse I just think Dream Theater are also in their 50s and tight as hell. Jordan Rudess is 63 and Mike Mangini is 57. Now, there has been some speculation that the band members might be robots or maybe even gods, but I'm not a conspiracy theorist and don't buy into that.
@@Zook85 and every time someone responds me by naming other people i just think that we aren't all equal. It still doesn't change the fact that not every band has the longevity of metallica and we just should appreciate them until we can

This is one thing I always loved about Metallica. They care about their fans. This was a make-up show because James was injured during summer sanitarium. They could have just cancelled either the summer sanitarium performance, or not done this make up gig. But what happened was so much more special for fans. They brought the other Summer Sanitarium bands on stage to fill in for James, creating this EPIC all star gig with Korn, SOAD, Kid Rock jamming with Metallica..... and then when James was healed they did this FREE make-up show for Sanitarium ticket holders.
I will always love Metallica, but that summer is why I will always RESPECT them. Much love from South Texas, fellas.
