Thank you for mentioning that you have to be respectful to people who live in slums. They might not have a lot of materialistic things with them, but you don't have to take away their dignity because of that.

    1) You are spot on Train ride is a must do.
    2) Actual Mumbai is from VT/Churchgate to Bandra beyond that everything is too far by car and people use trains for speed.
    3) Never eat from restaurants if one wants to save money. Mumbai thrives on street food.
    4) Best is to stay in and around VT and Churchgate most of the places of tourist interest are there.
    5) People interested in treking and history can visit the canary caves and national park in Borivili.
    6) Try to break the US$20 barrier eating street food in one day!
    7) Get overwhelmed by the torrential rain experienced only in Mumbai-Konkan region in any July/August no moon day. Entire city bows down and stops for 3 whole days every year!!! Beware never travel anywhere on NoMoon day during monsoon in India because of the very heavy rains experienced on those days. No wonder an ocean is named after India.

I completely agree with you about the slums, it's disrespectful to go there and take photos and talk about how they live. Like you say, let India solve India's problems.

So agree about the slums! It is not a tourist attraction!

How about making a movie on LA skid row with the two lead white actors speaking in an Indian accent? Sounds like a good idea.

Mumbai local train is the fastest mode of local transport . Even our chief minister of Maharashtra opted for it for an official visit because even helicopter would not have helped him because of take off and landing issues.

Cafe Britannia is the best place for Parsi food in Mumbai.. It's in south Mumbai.. It's mostly non vegetarian food.. But a berry pulao (rice) with dhansak (dal) are lovely options for vegetarians in Parsi cuisine.
