Ya i clock Alex as 23-24 personally.
Due to living in a small town, he doesn't have a lot of opportunities to feel like his life is better or improved since highschool which is why he talks about it so much.
I believe Alex really dislikes Shane for obvious reasons, and by extension doesn't want to be in a building around others who drink every night.

So since I don't see anyone else bringing it up in the comments: Alex's internalized homophobia ("I kept telling myself 'You can't have these kinds of feelings for another guy.'") most likely comes from George, who is blatantly homophobic towards the player if the player is male and marries Alex; while George changes his tune if the player maxes out friendship with George, it's clear that George started out with a very closed-minded perspective on same-sex relationships, and as one of the people raising Alex after his mother's death it makes sense that Alex would feel the pressure of George's values.
Great video, BTW! I came here via Haley, but I'm definitely going to make the time to go through all of this series sooner or later! ^_^

‘It’s not that deep’ it really is tho. These characters have been written with backstory, hopes, fears, quirks, and it’s doing a disservice to the writer to pretend that he didn’t do all of that just because we feel like it’s a cozy non-serious game. The fact that we have to deep dive to really explore them kind of shows how well he did it, they’re natural. Okay rant over I absolutely love this series, watched Harvey now I’m here living for the others. You’re really engaging and chilled

I didn't see anyone else mentioning it, but I think another reason Alex needs to grow into his sexuality and didn't think it was a possibility is his grandfather. Some of the things he says shows that he was against gay marriage until his grandson expressed interest in another man, and his viewpoint has changed. It's likely he had pushed that viewpoint on Alex, and part of this whole machismo thing was Alex running from his feelings.

My husband is a lot like Alex. My husband was adopted so his parents are older (my grandparents age). He played sports and that was the path he thought he was going to take in life. He was insecure about his self perceived lack of intelligence. (He is dyslexic so he has always felt held back by that). At first when I met him he put on this jock persona because that’s what he thought he was supposed to act like. As I got to know him he opened up to me and I found out that his is kind of a dork (like me)😊
I showed him that he didn’t need to be ashamed of who he was and he really loosened up. He stopped worrying about what other people thought about him and just acted like himself.
I can’t help but go for Alex because he reminds me so much of my husband.

Alex is a character who has grown on me over time. I was initially put off by his sexist comments and the salad of much contention. He's become one of the bachelors I like a great deal.
He does experience a lot of growth, and he is really sweet when you marry him. I love that he begins reading and trying to develop more than just his body, and I love that the books in his room include self help books to deal with his family's past. Also, I love him worrying about his grandparents and talking about doing things for them.
One view I've seen raised about the salad scene is that perhaps George and Evelyn helped him with planning the date, and that could be why he ordered something so old-fashioned (sexist) for the female farmer. It also helps that after marriage he cooks a lot of hearty meals for the player. He also is completely comfortable being a stay at home dad while his wife is the income earner.

      @FenrirInFlowers 4 месяца назад +70

One last thing I wanted to add about Alex. While I was initially not big on his 14 heart scene, I have grown to love it. He's basically just created a support group for a bunch of men who deeply need that social venue and the healing it can provide. It gives Kent a social outlet to help with his PTSD and trauma. It helps Shane to feel part of the group, to have friends, and to give him something to do socially at the Saloon besides drinking. It gets George out of the house, reinvigorates him with life, keeps him from watching TV alone, and gives Alex more bonding time with his grandpa. I view Gus as Alex's partner in this venture, showing his kindness like he did with offering Linus food. This time he's offered Alex the space where the men can gather.

I’ve been slowly marrying all the bachelors and bachelorettes.. but each in a different save file. Anyways, what I have noticed is that Alex and Penny are some of the only ones who mention having kids before you actually have kids as part of their day to day dialogue in marriage. I
never have kids normally, but when Penny and Alex indicate a desire for kids I can’t say no! So in two separate save files I have two kids with each of them. And in all my other save files kids have never come up so I have never had kids.

Maybe I'm just an Alex apologist but as a girl I've never interpreted the "If you weren't a girl" comment as sexist. He seems surprised when you tell him that you would like to play with him. I feel like he genuinely doesn't realize that girls can like sports, which might seem a little goofy and naive but take into consideration that he basically only hangs out with Haley. That girl has never picked up a ball in her life, and I respect that because same. And in the 2 hearts event he passes the ball to you just like that. See, you can fix him.

Alex pursues gridball because the thing he feels he lacks is family and love, and it is the connection he had to his only stable and close relationship, his mom. George has been in a wheelchair longer than Alex has lived there. He wasn't able to bond with Alex in that way (I think this drives some of George's grumpiness). Evelyn is also elderly and doesn't come across as the type to bond over gridball. Alex's father resented his youth, so age itself feels like a barrier to connection, and his grandparents are even older than his father. So Alex views his connection to other people through the lens of that sport. This is the only reason he wanted to go pro. He wanted to play the sport because he perceived it as a means for others to love him. He wants to have a lot of fans as an important sports player (the FIRST from Stardew Valley) because that's a sort of love he can conceptualize as being obtainable through working hard. He hasn't had success forming relationships by happenstance like usually happens, so he needs a way to "achieve" love. George's homophobia also gives Alex the impression that that love is conditional (this point is one of several reasons I believe Alex must have been written for the male farmer first and then modified for the female farmer rather than the other way around). As a gridball player with fans, all he has to do to maintain a conditional love is continue to be a competent player.
Two of his Wednesday choices are him testing you as someone he can get closer to, both in the context of gridball: first he finds a reason that you wouldn't want to play catch with him, I believe hoping you will object and insist you want to; next, he is checking your opinion of him by asking if you think he can achieve his goals. He is uncertain this is a genuine connection because you haven't really had any kind of gridball-related bonding. You play catch once. But you continue to get closer to him. Part of his arc is learning that he can connect with others without relying on gridball as the means. He starts to say that he doesn't HAVE to go pro, but he still wants to. He hasn't had anything else he'd been working toward and at this stage of your relationship that isn't going to completely replace his goals. But it's not something he actually wants, it's inertia. By the time you're married and possibly have kids, he feels fulfilled by the life he has because it has the stable family and unconditional love he lacked. Maintaining this family by being a good husband and father and being helpful to you as the breadwinner seems like a much more attractive long-term goal for him to have because it is a way he can put in effort and work hard and in return get the right kind of love, something more genuine and unconditional than fans. This is why it is NOT SAD for him to give up this dream, because all it ever was to him in the first place was a flawed idea of how he could work for love. His misconception is fundamentally corrected and he now gets to have the same underlying goal as before, but with a better and less hollow outcome. He's the only bachelor where I really think their story cannot be complete without marriage, because he won't otherwise truly have his epiphany and shift in mindset.
His 14-heart event is interesting because it demonstrates that Alex's love for gridball is sincere; he didn't dream of becoming a hockey player or a musician, his goal was fame but he chose to pursue it through something he did genuinely enjoy. Now he sees that gridball can still be one way he can form bonds with others, but it doesn't need to be adoration for performance. It can just be getting together to watch the game because they all like it. He wasn't wrong about its role in his relationship with his mother, he just took the wrong lesson from it. Now he understands, and can use it to form new bonds in a healthy way. This also contains one of the most important lines in Alex's story: George saying he feels young again. Remember, George's age and disability is what prevented them from bonding over gridball back when Alex thought actually playing it was the only way to. George saying he feels young is kind of an echo back to that by essentially saying he feels like the barriers between him and Alex have gone. But more importantly, this line is Alex's final victory over his father, once and for all. Alex's father was abusive and withheld love, Alex believes, over his resentment of others' youth. His past was past, there was too much of it wasted, and there isn't a redo. Alex had youth, and his father could only be envious, he could never HAVE that youth. But when Alex finally bonds with George, George feels young again. George, someone with far more reason to yearn for youth and for an earlier time than Alex's father had, whose age had been a much more tangible impediment to their bonding. It is showing that maybe his dad could have felt the same if he'd allowed himself to feel love. Age was never the reason his father couldn't connect with him, his father felt aged BY the lack of connection. George completely dismantles Alex's view of his relationship with his father and makes him realize it wasn't his fault to any extent, it was his dad's. This was not a scenario where Alex had to ask for validation as he has done so many times before. He's just showing you his project. George, without being asked, says the single most personally validating thing it's possible to say to Alex, and he is the most effective person that statement could come from. And it isn't the Farmer, who Alex has been relying on up until now to drive his view of love and connection. It is someone else, a relationship that had already existed and already had problems, repaired and strengthened by Alex's efforts alone. He may be married to you, but he can finally stand on his own two feet emotionally now.

this video (and this comment) have made me rethink my initial thoughts on alex. i've really liked him from the beginning, but i did believe he had, sort of, given up on his dream. a few years later, i see most of that interpretation stemmed from me projecting my own feelings and life into his (when it came to that aspect of him).
i'm really happy i have this new point of view now, and you summarised it all very well.
it's weird to like a character even more after distancing myself further from it, but it sure brings a lot more depth, i believe.

I swear, I always get so irritated when people say that Alex is an insufferable misogynist when you play as a female farmer and making it sound like all he does is being condescending towards you every time you talk to him, while I never even thought that his comments could be interpreted as something THAT bad before I found out what other people thought of him in the first place. I'm glad that you pointed out that his sexist comments might stem from his ignorance rather than actual misogyny (which is pretty much how i've been interpriting it the whole time) and not just say "don't go after him when you're a chick" like others do, because I'm honestly so tired of this.
Though what i definitely agree with when it comes to other's opinion, is that romancing him as a male farmer adds more spice to his ark with us not only showing him that guys can and should talk about their feelings too, but also helping him to come to terms with the fact that he might not be as straight as he probably though he was 🌚
But yea, with this rant out of the way, I liked your analysis on Alex's character. I'm always glad to see my boi getting some love that he deserved

this is such a great video. stardew valley is such a simple and yet nuanced game, and i think you did an amazing job showing that here. also justice for alex! i adore the compassion you had for his story, while you mostly see other people in the community calling him boring. sure, hes a trope character, but i think that makes his story that much more satisfying to go through. i love witnessing growth in characters. (which is why i like shane, even though his change is a little debatable)
anyway, just found your channel and i love these videos and they make me see the characters in a different light that i would have by myself :) so thank you!

I was just looking for some long form content on subjects/games I don't know much about, but I think I found GOLD!
My reccs gave me your latest video, but I always love watching a video series from the beginning to see the creator's evolution.
My next couple of days will definitely be engaging, I might even restart SV to experience these romances myself😊
Edit: having fully watched the video now and just...oh? my God??? Maybe I'm a huge softie but I was almost tearing up throughout MULTIPLE parts of the video 😭 Learning to accept your own queerness, the healing from childhood trauma, hoping people talk to you because of loneliness. You were NOT kidding in the intro, massive props to the writers of this game for putting this emotionally resonant stuff in their farming game!!!

I like Alex but won't marry him because of a similar reason that you had for Elliott...sexism. When dining with him you get a veggie salad and he gets a steak! And then he says 'can you smell the fragrance?' Like rub it in mate, I've been running around on the farm all day! I need a steak 😂 And this is at 10 hearts, he should know me better at this point! Maybe give us food options? And he can comment on our choice? Elliott getting a wine for us at 4 hearts shows that he maybe doesn't know us yet and is trying to be 'chivalrous' in a misguided way. I know it's not that deep but that was my take. Great videos 😊

Hey you! This video was on my front page today and I felt suuper excited to watch it! And it's really good!! I love the structure of your overall video. I loved the pacing and the speed at which you talked. I love how you made the boy so 3-dimensional!! You wanted a sandwich, so: your video is a lot more quiet than most other videos! BUT your balancing with the music was *very* good. I think the crafted props are a really great touch and they were super fun to look at! I'd really like to see more of this and I think I'd watch every entry. But please. Don't feel pressured- that's a huge project! Take your time and have fun with it :)
Now more private: I never cared about Alex AT ALL but now I like him okay. So, thanks. :)

ive been getting recommended your videos for a few weeks now, and now that i've finally narrowed down who i'm going to marry in my 1.6 playthrough (its between haley and harvey... i know, duality) i've started to watch them and WOW! i came from the elliot video so i had no clue that you literally JUST started youtube! you've done an excellent job so far and i really hope you continue. i'm excited for your look at sebastian as he was the first person i ever married in stardew so he has a special place in my heart ❤
i'd also be very interested in a series of the same topic, but with stardew valley expanded or any other mod that adds romanceable npcs/turns current ones into marriage candidates (for example, marlon is romanceable in the expanded adventurer's guild mod). only if you want to, though! i think you'd have a lot of fun with victor from sdv expanded

i am replaying stardew valley for maybe the fourth of fifth time because its been a special interest that has always provided me a lot of comfort! and i am very happy to have found your video as youre just as invested, cus i can put it on while i play!! its like that man eating sausage immersive experience meme!!
alex wasnt particularly my fave when i first met him given that his sexist comments kinda rubbed me the wrong way, but he grew on me as i got to the heart events where he apologized to the farmer for being a jerk!
part of why he is the way he is comes from being emotionally stunted from the abuse he endured? i think that his desire to be a gridball player is a form of escapism , he imagines himself as a larger then life gridball player so he doesnt have to come to terms with being an average person. he doesnt want to think of himself as being worthless the way his dad would refer to him so he tries to over compensate for that insecurity by putting on an arrogant mask BUT! ultimately he realizes that it only hurts him and the people around him and he apologizes! its strong writing that i just wasnt really expecting to see that when i first opened this farm game, and it makes me happy that he doesnt have to achieve his dreams to grow as a person ! he is def one of the character that changes the most through his interactions with the farmer and im BARKING thank you for the alex video feeling well fed
kinda a side note but i do think some of the sexist writing in sdv is more self aware in some parts then others? alex being kinda sexist and realizing he needs to get off his high horse is cool but like i have a bone to pick with abigail's 10 heart cut scene because i while i really dont mind when characters ambitions change ( like how i feel about alex :)) it feels weird that she has to give up her dreams because shes just too scared .. despite being able to stand up to pierre and her mom constantly it just feels kinda out of character and like the games saying shes better of as a wife then an adventurer? even if i do want her to be my wife i want to fight thru the mines TOGETHER DAMNIT idk??? idkkkkkkkkkk anyways tangent aside i really hope thats who u cover next!!! im very excited for your next video!!

Had you not said, I wouldn't have known this was your first youtube video! Your style is so polished and professional and this was such a joy to listen to / watch while I work through completing (for the moment) Summer Year 7 in my own save file :)

For the hundred hours I've played this game I've avoided the wiki for info about each romance route, to not spoil myself if I wanted to pursue them. I think that the anti-climax actually isn't anticlimactic-having watched your whole video laying out his story, it makes perfect sense as a culmination of his arc!
When we think about where his obsession with gridball came from, we know that it was something he used to do with his mother, who was the loving and stable figure in his childhood, contrasted with his absent and emotionally abusive father. When his mother passes away, he clings to gridball as his one source of good memories and a fragment of stability in his life, the only continuity he has now that both of his parents are gone. His need to prove himself and his positive associations with gridball drive him to pursue it relentlessly.
During the course of your relationship with him, though, he slowly begins to feel valued by someone other than his grandparents, who a cynic could argue are obligated to care for him. Haley's attraction is also arguably just that-obligation (*cough comphet cough*). You're the first person to ever really show him that you like spending time with him and value him as a person, and you give him the chance to be vulnerable with you and accept him. Through that arc, he's able to slowly begin restoring his self-esteem, providing him emotional closure with his father.
I think the 14 heart scene where he finally gives up on gridball once and for all is actually him finding emotional closure with his mother. Like I said earlier, gridball represented the possibility of happiness and stability to him, someone who *wanted* to play with him because she loved him, and that was half of why he was pursuing gridball so passionately. Now, having been married to you for a while and finding himself more deeply in love than ever, he takes the opportunity to start building community connections as well. He is fully and truly loved and wanted by those around him, and can find peace in the stability of his life. He's able to let gridball go because it was never truly his dream, but a representation of what he lacked. Through his relationship with you, those fundamental emotional needs have finally been met, and he's achieved his *real* dream: having a family full of mutual love, trust, and respect ♡
Seriously thanks so much for this video, I was kind of let down by his 10 and 14 heart events when I married him, but I have so much more appreciation for them now! Thanks for improving my appreciation for Alex and SDV! ♡
