hello! i filmed this before i put out the alex video but i just want to say a huge ginormous thank you to everyone who watched that video / has subscribed! it really means the world to me, i was so nervous to put myself out there like this but i’ve got such wonderful feedback and it really makes me happy.
i’m going to try to put out a video every monday, i’m moving house soon so most likely won’t be able to consistently stick to this but the elliot video is almost finished so that’ll definitely be out next week! i genuinely love making these and it’s so cool to see that other people like to watch them. thank you again for the support 🥹❤️

Gus, and everyone there, just are past caring since they all did the same thing and suppose the argument of better she underage drinks in the same room as the entire town if she overdoes it, or otherwise, since there's going to be someone to help her out if Gus believed in laws and they went drinking by the river or something lol

Considering how the saloon struggles financially I have no reason to assume Gus wouldn't overlook the fake ID X'D
Gus is nice guy, the financial benefits are a little perk. Sam loves Joja Cola (vending machine), Abigail plays Journey of the Prairie King (arcade cabinet), Sebastian is very good at pool (many pool tables in bars are coin operated).

i think it's common for people who still live at home after turning 18 and don't have a great relationship with their family to maintain the "my parent's don't understand me" attitude - i know i did, and it's because my parents treated me like a child & never changed that attitude until i moved out
THIS. I still live with my parents at 21 years old, I just finished my third year of college, because rent is too expensive. plenty of kids live with their parents throughout college. and when you don't have a super great relationship (like me and my parents) it can constantly feel like you're a teenager stuck in an adult's body because you're rehashing the same old fights from high school because nothing has really changed other than you growing older.
Help I'm 25 and just barely out of this phase :') still living at home with parents unfortunately
re: abigail's hair, i think it's worth noting that the wizard is the one who has the shrine of illusion in his basement. my personal conspiracy theory is that caroline used its magic to alter abigail's hair colour before she was born so pierre wouldn't be suspicious, and now that she is an adult the illusion magic has worn off, or even been counteracted by some innate magic abigail inherited but is unaware of.
edit: oh, right. AND the witch's hut also has that shrine that lets the player *erase an ex's memory of them*. so if we want to REALLY put on our tinfoil hats and go deeper it's even possible that caroline remembers exploring near the tower and being restless, but nothing more. she never mentions the wizard himself, after all. maybe in her fit of jealousy and rage the witch did it, or else the wizard did because he regretted it. caroline could truly believe pierre is abigail's father.

My headcanons for Alex and Haley never going to the saloon are: Alex doesn’t drink on principle because alcohol kills lifting gains/is toxic to health, and Haley just despises the overall vibe of the saloon and doesn’t want to drink where her sister works.
Alex’s dad was an alcoholic so it makes sense he doesn’t go there but that too I think he wouldn’t go there either way

You get a piece of dialogue during the Dark Tailsman quest about the Witch (Wizard’s Ex-Wife). She turned green with *envy* and cursed the countryside in revenge because the Wizard did something unforgivable (I think it’s pretty much just confirmed that the Wizard is Abigail’s biological father).

Worth noting vis a vis planchette that spirits do 100% confirmed exist in Stardew, so it's entirely possible Abigail was being magically fucked with.

When I first started playing stardew I gave abigail a bat wing cos I thought it'd be right up her alley with the adventuring, gothic vibe. She was horrified 😅

My theory for why she's freaked out by the spirit board thing is that getting in a serious relationship would traditionally lead to her in the same married life that both her parents resent, so it comes off as some fear of commitment

Well, it also would have taken away her agency in confessing to the farmer. I think she just doesn't want it outed by a spirit board, but say it herself in the way she wants.
The saloon thing doesn't really have to indicate anything about Abigail's age. As a guy from rural America I can tell you it's perfectly normal for teenagers to be in a bar&grill type establishment like that, they just wouldn't be served alcohol.
On the dying of her hair: My guess is that her natural hair color changed when she came of age and that this is a trait of people with magical blood. We never see a picture of the wizard as a kid so his hair could have changed too.
yeah it's not like they'd be able to sneakily order drinks anyway since Gus knows who they are. I feel like Alex doesn't go to saloon simply because he's not friends with anyone lol
You know, there is one side of Abigail I would have liked to explore a bit with her 14 heart event, and that is her marriage to the player character compared to Pierre and Carolines marriage.
Like you mentioned when Caroline married Pierre she set her wilder side aside for the domestic homelife, and she settled. But I see no reason for Abigail to give up her more adventurous side, and it would be a nice to show that unlike Pierre the farmer supports and encourages her more adventurous spirit.

Specially if you played this before and then after the island update! There are more things to explore around and it's nice to imagine Abigail exploring the island too
Abigail also has random dialogue where she says she used to dye her hair, but now it grows out purple.
I feel like it should have been a mechanic where you can't have kids with Abigail, but she follows you around in the mines like a talisman frog

Awesome as always. Regarding Abigail's hair, a person's hair color can change dramatically throughout their life. For instance, I was born with black, curly hair, but it turned straight & dirty blond when I was a kid. My mom had light brown hair into her teens but it turned black when she was an adult. I don't think such dramatic color changes are super common (more subtle ones yes) but it does happen. So maybe this is what happened with Abigail. She had chestnut hair as a kid, but as she matured it turned purple naturally. Or maybe she did dye it once, but that just "unlocked" her purple hair genes that took over or was timed right when her hair color was naturally changing anyways. 🤔 So yes, Caroline fucked the wizard.
Kind of reminds me of the medieval stories about changelings.
Re: the hair discussion. Chiming in with my own story, I had dark brown, straight hair as a kid, but when I got older, it turned a bit more reddish brown and got really curly. And during quarantine, when I chopped my hair really short, my partner was helping me clean up the back and he told me the back of my neck has blond patches- blond!!

Definitely when I got that scene with the monster I had a moment of 'Wait, am I meant to feel bad for the monster?' Because of the mechanics of the game seeming apposed. But the only other thing that made me think about it in game is getting the void pendant. To get Krobus to move in with you you need the void pendant and to get the void pendant you pretty much need to grind void essence in the mines- and the main ones that drop them? Shadow brutes/shaman/people. And I had the thought that this was messed up because I am essentially slaughtering monsters like Krobus (that have some kind of spirituality if they're shaman) to get him to move in with me. Which doesn't feel as bad since they attack you and Krobus calls them aggressive. But thinking about it now, the shadow people live underground. Have we been invading their home this whole time? Food for thought.
When i first started playing Stardew, i was going to romance Abigail but then the egg hunt started and i started hating her purely because she beat me💀🙏

Bestie, you keep saying that being or not being at the saloon indicates a character's age. But keep in mind, it's not just a bar - Gus offers a variety of meals every day, there's arcade machines, and what does Abigail actually do when she is at the saloon? She plays pool with her friends, not a drink in sight. If you think about it, the saloon is one of the few places they could hang out at all - the other being the library, I guess, or just outside. I think the saloon fulfills the role of a medieval tavern, where people stay to socialise, learn the news and gossip of the day, relax after a hard day of work. I doubt Abigail is there for the alcohol.
good point - in britain you usually get kicked out of a pub after a certain point if you’re not of legal drinking age so i guess that’s my bias!!
the emily & shane ones are going to be so entertaining since they were added as marriage candidates post-release. i’m so excited for those videos!!!
About the "Caroline has been secretly dying Abigail's hair" thing:
You know the shrine of illusions from the Wizards' Tower, right? Pretty sure she just secretly used it on Abigail when she was a baby. But when Abigail dyed her hair for the first time it somehow ended up breaking the illusion and her hair sayed purple.
Or, alternatively, Caroline might be a witch (not THE witch the Wizard was married to) and used some kind of illusion magic on her, but that might be a bit too far-fetched

Pretty sure the implication behind the purple hair is that when she dyed it, it (for some reason) stayed that colour magically. Pretty sure there’s more dialogue about this.
one small thing i want to mention about her 14 heart event, its actually a very common thing for people to be impacted by the first time they "take a life". i live in an area with a lot of hunters, and lots of people specifically remember the first animal they killed and how it made them feel. it really hits you that you just KILLED something, it was just living its life peacefully and now its never going to do that again because of your actions. for some people its more of an emotional moment than for others, but in my understanding it comes from a place of respect for nature and the animals they hunt. abbys 14 heart event could have DEFINITELY been better, but i personally dont see anything wrong with that specific aspect of it. i think it shows that shes matured a bit.
Abigail honestly doesn’t read as a teenager to me, (I’m also 26, but I very much do not have my life together…) she reads as someone who’s been sheltered by her parents. Someone who hasn’t been able to explore or be herself for so much of her life, that now she’s an adult she’s catching up on what she couldn’t be as a teenager.

1:21:21 I always assumed that her hair WAS brown, but as she grew up it slowly changed to purple (like how some brunettes get blonde and vice versa) and she just didn't notice because she had already dyed it purple and kept dying it, so it covered up the naturally changing color. Though I LOVE the idea that Caroline was always dying her hair brown as a kid, that's so fucked I love it
I like to think that her hair was blue at one point, but she dyed it purple instead in a bit of malicious compliance against her mom
My take on her age has always been that she's about 20 / 21, which is still young enough to have a "teenage" like personality. I've always liked her character because she's struck me as the type of person who graduates high school, takes college courses because that's what everyone tells you you're supposed to do next, but it's not really for them and they just feel lost with not knowing what to do with themselves. There's also the fact that the town of Stardew is ment to be a small town (like Jas and Vincent don't even have a school to go to, Penny just teaches them out of the kindness of her heart), meaning that Abigail doesn't really have a lot of opportunities to explore. She just seems like a new/young adult who's in that awkward "stuck" period of her life (not to mention what you said about her parents, she most likely is moody- depressed, because she feels both stuck and trapped, and therefore rebels seemingly like a teenager would).
Something I find interesting about the whole Wizard being Abigail's Dad conspiracy. Rasy says that "it happens sometimes" as if he didn't realize he was going to have a kid, or is a bit perturbed and surprised by it. I always liked this theory where somehow Abi *became* his daughter over time.
We know she spends time standing by the Wizard's tower. What if she did that often all her life and his ambient magic seeped into her, transforming her slowly into his daughter? More like a changling, or something.
That kind of creeps me out. Like if I befriend the wizard he could become my dad???

I've always interpreted her "my hair never fades from purple" line as she unknowingly has some amount of latent magic and that is what was keeping it purple? like she has been keeping her hair purple this whole time with like... magic or something? If I was the dev her 14 heart event would 100% be her discovering she has kick-ass magic or something XD Excellent video btw!!
I love this idea! I headcanon that people with “unnatural” hair color in SDV are either in tune with or have been touched by magic in some way. Emily, Abby, the Wizard and Caroline all have “alternative” hair colors. Caroline seems to be the only outlier, but you can argue that her knack for growing plants in her sunroom and quotes about foraging, as well as helping Evelyn with the town plants, is a little bit of “natural” magic/a green thumb. Abby dyes her hair because she wants to be closer to the magical and further from the mundane.

I think living with your parents at that age can impose this sense of like… extended teenagerness? I lived with grandparents in my early 20s and definitely felt frustrated and stunted that I was being treated like a teenager. That’s kind of how I read Abigail (as well as Sam and Seb tbh).

There's also Life Cycle, which lets you pair some of the datable NPCs who you don't want to marry yourself. You can even make Lewis acknowledge his relationship with Marnie.

I agree that there’s plot holes with the monster Abigail slayed. My guess as to why it’s such a big deal, is because for Abigail, it was. The grave stands as a symbol of something she dared to do. A monster she was brave enough to take out to protect you. She was stepping into the protector role. Instead of being sheltered (like by her parents) she activiely “sheltered” someone else. It’s a symbol of her growth.
these videos are so fun i can’t wait for the deep dive into harvey’s storyline, he’s the first character i ever romanced and i always feel a little bit like i’m cheating on harvey if i try to romance anyone else haha. he’s just so sweet and as an adult player of the game i find him more of a true romantic candidate for me than any of the characters who have this younger vibe like abigail, sam, sebastian, alex, and haley. plus he makes me complete breakfasts!

I think that another reason Abby wouldn’t give you a bouquet in-universe is because…. The only place you can get one is from Pierre’s shop. Knowing what we know about him, and knowing what we know about how Abigail thinks of him, that would be. A very complicated exchange.
I guarantee you that if SV were a cartoon or a sitcom or anything of the like besides a video game, you’d get that kind of scene you get in EVERY fictional medium involving a traditional family and their rebellious child. Imagine, like, Abby trying to get a bouquet from her dad, Pierre demanding to know who it’s for, and Abby refusing to say because it’s none of his business. It wouldn’t end well no matter what happened, so Abigail would probably bottle her feelings forever, waiting/hoping the farmer makes the first move for her.

I don't know why I thought this, but I always imagined her as home schooled, which explained why she could seem a little immature for being 19-21ish
adding onto the americans saying that we do call it homework here, even in college. also we did have online school pre 2020. from 2015-2019 i attended the entirety of my high school online. that’s a very uncommon experience though!

I’m someone from USA, and I’m an undergraduate in university everyone I know calls it homework still. My mother who is from Europe also asks me how my homework is doing. So yeah college and university students still call it homework at least where I am from.
I’m only 20 minutes in but I realized the reason why I’ve never romanced Abigail is because she’s me. Like this is my life story.

My interpretation of the bar is that since the town is so small, Gus knows how old the Youths are and the underage folks are still allowed to hang out recreationally. The arcade and pool area feels so separate that to me, it just made sense that the teens are allowed there but not at the actual bar. Idk. I thought of Sam, Abigail, Seb, Haley, Maru and Alex as being 21 or younger, probably right around 19? I like that it's subjective though.
My theory on Abigail's hair is that she was probably born with that light brown hair her mom says she has, but as she grew older, and most likely tapped into some innate powers (her attraction to the occult, etc.) that she may have inherited from the wizard, her hair began to change colors, and she dyed it all to match one color. However, because she has those innate powers, it never changed back, because it was changing to purple anyways.
That wizard is definitely her father though, it's so obvious xD

I love Abi with all my heart but I agree on how the romance seems to undercut that unconventional aspect of her character - that´s the reason I waited for like a year to marry her and am NEVER having kids. I´m forever sad that there´s no scenes of the player and her having adventures together, that could´ve been a cool callback to the first heart event

I read a theory that Caroline was the wizard’s daughter from a sort of random encounter the wizard had in the past, with him having a presumably longer lifetime, and she was drawn back to the valley. Her hair might even be naturally green bc forest magic which would explain her having the problem with dyed hair. And that would also explain Abby having enough magic to keep her hair purple by force of will, especially with her being born inside the valley.
I love that you went into the wizard paternity plot. Caroline totally fucked that wizard! And I loved that you popped in as editing Fiona to add in the marriage dialogue about Abby's hair never fading. I've always thought that her hair became purple sometime after she dyed it purple, and she just hadn't realized it. Whether it's puberty or magic wizard genes, it does suggest M Razmodius has a good reason to suspect she's his daughter.
This game definitely gives off a certain vibe that at least Caroline and Jodi have been boxed in by traditional sexism in their society, and it's lovely to see Abigail fighting to forge her own path. It's sad that her success is rather muddled by the fact we only get to see her in a domestic role after marriage. I like to think that she has adventures in the mines and maybe even on Ginger Island.
I wonder if the 14 heart event was colored by Krobus being expanded as a character. Krobus became a potential roommate with an adorable 14 heart event. That raises qustions about killing shadow people specifically, as they are sentient with an entire society. Wilderness golems are also very humanoid looking though, and I can see how Concerned Ape may have felt the need to acknowledge the monsters as living beings after developing Krobus so much.
On the subject of Abby's friendship with Sam and Seb, there's a fair bit I can say.
Sam's 2 heart event is from before Abigail is part of the band. Sam and Seb are the ones who start the band. Abigail joins after Sam's missable year 1 event.
In Sam's 3 heart event after you've discussed all the serious stuff about his father and whether Vincent should be shielded from the possibility of Kent dying, Sam changes the subject to the band to lighten things up. He tells you:
"Hey did I tell you the band's starting to come together?" "Yeah! It turns out Abigail's a pretty good drummer. And Sebastian seemed to really want her in the band..."
This is also more dialogue that implies Sam is picking up on Sebastian having an attraction to Abigail. Sam only calls her a pretty good drummer. He doesn't say she's the greatest drummer, but he pointedly says Sebastian is pushing for her. Sam's very much hinting that Seb has an interest in her that goes beyond her drumming.
Now, how close the friendship for that trio is warrants some debate. Both Sam and Abigail are closer to Sebastian than to each other, but Sebastian seems to keep them both at a distance. In Sebastian's 2 heart event if you ask him why he doesn't want to see his friends, it gives the distinct impression that Sebastian takes more than he gives in his friendships.
I mean, Seb is stressed and venting, so he's talking crap and perhaps not really how he feels the rest of the time... but he treats a girl he's in other places hinted to have a attraction to as an unwanted imposition. And he's highly critical of Sam's need to be around people without any regard for the fact that Sam is going through a lot. Sam's constantly following the news in fear for his father's life, feels responsible for his much younger brother, and is being smothered by his loving but overbearing mother-who is one dropped egg away from a nervous breakdown. Is it that Seb is missing why Sam goes crazy if he's not around friends for awhile, or has Sam never even confided in Seb because the friendship is at more of a casual level and is more a matter of convenience than a substantial connection? I think there is plenty of room to question how close the friendship is for the trio, and I'm glad that you raised the question for Abigail.
Finally, on the Sebastian and Abigail hints, there is a train car with graffiti on it that says S(rest of the name painted over but right length to be Seb or Sebby) ♡s Abby. And we know Seb is the character who loves trains... and lives right by the train station.

One thing to mention: The wizard' daughter isn't necessarily one of the young romanceables, and he could have had the daughter outside of Pelican Town. I've heard the alternate theory that the wizard is Caroline's dad. That he knew he might have a kid about Caroline's age from someone he was with in his adventuring days, and that, when Abigail was born, he noticed that she had a bit of a magical aptitude, and that she and her mom had a bit of family resemblance.
It could be any of the other female townsfolk, though. If we're going purely on resemblance, Marnie's round face and wild hair seem similar to the wizards, and she has the largest nose of all the female townsfolk. If anyone in the town resembles the wizard, it's Marnie.
I don't disagree that the intended interpretation seems to be that Caroline had a fling with the wizard, but there are other options that make sense.
I believe a 100% that Caroline ducked the Wizard!!
The wizard shows a lot of regret for divorcing his witch ex wife, and he asks after the Magic ink mission if she was living with someone else. He still cares as someone who did a big mistake 💀

The only other option in my head for the wizards daughter is Jas because all we get on her parents is a vague reference to both of them dying. Something that could very likely be caused by the wizards ex wife. I always found it weird that Marnie never even references Jas in her quotes. Its only Shane- i guess because of the responsibility he has as a godfather but Marnie seems so separate from Jas. This is random speculation though theres so much more compelling evidence for Abigail.
ok, i watched your krobus video first (bc that's my little guy. my little void husband), and i had also never seen abigail's 14 heart seen--so this was really interesting to me! i feel like it's another perfect example of what you were talking about in your video on krobus: the game wants to have its cake and eat it too, when it comes to the combat and killing monsters. it wants you to do it mindlessly, as a routine and normal part of gameplay, and not think too much about it, but it also wants to have these moments with abigail and with krobus that seem designed to make you question the morality of killing monsters in the game. but then offer no gameplay choices or ways out of it! it's actually one of the things that's always bothered me most about playing as a krobus lover, and seeing abigail's 14 heart scene here has just reiterated how un-thought-out this whole aspect of the game is 😫

I think Abigail is in her mid or even late 20's. She strikes me as someone who grew up homeschooled and her parents couldn't afford to send her away to college. So she is taking courses online slowly to try and get a degree to get out of her small town and not just be stuck in her hometown forever. Also, US people definitely call homework from college courses homework. I literally do not know what else I would call it.

Hey Fiona, I just wanted to say: I love your videos!! I've been binge watching them for the past days and they're so well written :) keep up the good work!
My personal take on Abigail's purple hair is that she was likely born with a natural light chestnut color, but wanted to dye it when she got older. Perhaps because of her natural inclination towards the occult & her connection with the wizard, she was unknowingly drawn to a color that is connected to him. Then as she gets older and more determined to be herself, her will is strengthened by her inherited magical abilities and her hair starts growing the color she wants it to be.
it seems possible to me that caroline is lying about abigail's old hair color to try to cover up her secret, since no one else ever mentions it.
