    Sadly because of Dean's incompetence, Atatiana is gone, her young nephew is traumatized, and Atatiana's parents both passed away from grief. Her father died from a heart attack two-weeks after his daughter passed. And Atatiana's mother died about a month later. Just a horrible situation all the way around....

    I don't understand how Atatiana ends up dead from a nonemergency call about an ajar door... If the cop is scared, why go into the house? My neighbor left her door open and was gone for a week... I called the police bc she never did that before...the cops yelled from the door and waited, then walked into the house... It's the disregard for certain folk’s lives for me...sadly, this will continue to happen bc cops aren't being held accountable criminally or financially 😔 my condolences to the family, especially the children, and her friends...

      Legally they can enter the home and property on a wellness check. But the sole purpose is just to check if the person or all inside are ok. We woke to two cops in our home at 3am. They came in to a back door that was left open for a house
      Guest that stayed in a detached living space but had no restroom. Imagine waking up to 2 guys with flashlights and dark clothing. But they knocked and when sleeping folk don’t hear they found a way in but announced.

    I started my RUclips channel because of this case. I said it so many years ago. As a police officer we are not trained to act as these officers acted on a wellness check. Their actions were reckless and would make any reasonable person inside of the dwelling suspicious that they might be in danger. Officer Dean's actions were the catalyst and therefore he must pay.

      I think the reason she got upset was because she is clearly a caring person and has worried and wondered about the child and how he was doing and when she was told that he had testified the day before she thought about him and about what testifying would have been like for him and how hard it would have been and the effects it would have on him and the thought of it upset her .

This office knows that her partner was wrong and she also knows that he deserves those 90. Everyone wants to blame the neighbor not realizing that it was 2:00 a.m. in the morning when this neighbor noticed her door was open and being a neighbor/friend and knowing them for so long he felt that something was wrong so he called out of concern for the family.. and he also knew that this young lady's mother was ill so that made him more concerned.. 2:00 a.m. in the morning seeing your neighbor's door open wide would that not make you concerned anyone who has compassion for people would be concerned. Everyone wants to blame the neighbor instead of blaming a cop who murdered this young lady.

He called the non emergency number. The cop entered the property with gun drawn. If you crawl around in the bushes at night without identifying yourself, you don’t get to play victim. A cop’s job is to ENFORCE LAWS. Can’t do that when they are actively breaking them can they. So let me repeat myself. This is a slam dunk case. There is no defense. The most they can do is muddy the waters. Not going to work.

      Another comment on here said that the neighbor called the nonemergency number for a welfare check since it was abnormal for them to have their doors open.
      So the police didn't need guns drawn and should've just knocked on the open door, not creeping around the back yard.

Then they would have heard the sounds of her playing video games and laughing with her nephew, and realized everything was fine( like we would think that peace officers would do) instead of deciding to do some kind of tactical recon of the backyard , like a military strike team.

    If she lies on the stand to protect her partner, she loses her job and freedom. If she tells the truth, she might lose her job, but will have the respect of the people because she told the truth on the record.

    Had the two officers exercised the slightest bit of actual investigative technique , they would have heard the sounds of the video game being played and the normal sounds of a household NOT in danger.
    But they didn't
    They approached it as a military strike team, looking for targets, instead of law officers looking to help people.

    I'm so glad she told the truth. That poor woman looked terrified and heartbroken sitting up there. Y'all know damn well she is gonna be shunned in the police force. She's going to be harrassed, no one is gonna want to work with her, she will be threatened, and if not tortured by officers that are supposed to have her back all because she told the truth and she still went on that stand knowing what's going to happen. I wish there were more cops like her.

    I’m not an emotional person but this story made my heart cry for Atatiana and her family, the question is how does a wellness check turn into a murder? This cop was not in fear for his life, he chose to fire his weapon and end her life opposed to just coming to the door and asking if everything was okay, instead he chose to murder this woman for no reasoning, it doesn’t make sense how these cops chose to handle this situation, they won’t reveal where her licensed weapon was and that’s irrelevant at this point, because this cop was looking to make a simple check into more than what it was!

      Because it's almost not existent in the way police are "trained" and not "trained"; hence, making them almost "inhumane" with the way they interact with the community and society itself. So to actually see an officer speaking the truth, having such big heart (what many humans lack), risking her life, freedom and career and being confrontational with any outcome that arized; it's realistically, extremely rare. Moreover, it's not just the police department; the government has destroyed this new generation, including the older generation's humanity behavior and it sadly has become disgusting. But I do agree with you; it should be a human requirement to have these natural qualifications.

    Prior to retiring, I was a certified counselor in the Military who counseled hundreds of young people just like Carol Darch. I can see by her affect and by hearing her voice that she is a tender hearted lady who has empathy for others in pain or distress. She shouldn't be a cop. Average cops don't care what another person is feeling or if they're in pain. Miss Darch would make a better health care professional like an EMT.

    GOD bless this young lady. She is so truthful in her testimony and seems sincerely caring about Zion’s wellbeing. I know this is hard for her position as being the partner of a bad cop.     It's disgusting that when an officer makes this type of horrible mistake, they feel the need to lie and waste time and money by denying it all instead of admitting fault and facing justice. So much for legacy, honor and justice, in the end betraying all of this and so much more that you swore an oath to uphold and protect.
    Deep respect for this officer. She proudly chose honesty. That's what being a peace officer is all about.
    I always told my colleagues that I'd always have their backs until the law said I couldn't. No sworn officer has the right to expect any officer or department to assist them in denying and covering up illegal wrongdoing and violations of department policies.
    Until departments clean up and rid their agencies of bad apples, we are all at the mercy of bad cops who do not deserve to wear a uniform, badge or gun. Stand up to these law breakers like this young officer has done.
    I hope Tx DPS cleans house soon. She'd make a great trooper.

    Bad 🍎's are inevitable, I understand that. But IF ONLY the good outweighed the bad in the instance of police. That would make a world of difference. From where I stand, and I live in Metro Detroit, born and raised in Detroit, the bad outweighs the good. I have personally heard of mainly bad encounters with police from people I know and/or meet. I have heard good things. But those stories are too few and far in between when speaking of the people who are supposed to PROTECT and SERVE our country and its people.
    Kudos to this officer who stood up for what was right, no matter how hard it was and if repercussions of telling the truth took place afterwards.

      The neighbor DID walk over there and he didn’t hear a sound. It was 2 o’clock in the morning and he stated he didn’t want to scare anyone in the house since it was the middle of the night and the doors were open. He did however call the police just to make sure that they were ok! HE DID NOTHING WRONG!!!

    A neighbor called non-emergency police to report "a door was ajar", 12News. Some people have no life, so they butt into others'. And a woman died because of it. And a child traumatized by it. The fact that someone called the police to check out the residence of a Black family because of an open door?! - irresponsible and ignorant.

      The neighbour was concerned, went to investigate but felt uneasy about entering the house so called the police on the non-emergency number. By the way, the neighbour who "called the police to check out the residence of a black family because of an open door (at 3 a.m.) was a black man. I suggest you get your evidence from court testimony rather than the media.

    Being in the fraternal order is so much pressure because of the foundation is set up and the verbal and non verbal expectations. The mental toughness it takes to choose this profession- knowing what you will endure within and without, is exasperating and gives daily pause. *Prayers for her and all the others who endure untold pressure all around.* 🙏🏾🕊🕊🕊🌺💢🌿🌿🌿

    because of the criminal actions of a colleague this poor young woman"s life will be forever impacted negatively, she probably will not be able to work as a leo for much longer, certainly not have a 25 year career and retirement that she thought she would have, and likely will suffer from ptsd for the rest of her life. it is such a shame. the good ones always suffer and pay for the actions of the bad ones, and that is true for any profession.

    My heart goes out to the Baby that was there at the time . He will be scared for life . Never trust police again . losing someone so dear to him is heartbreaking .

    Why didn't they just knock on the door, announce they were the police and go from there, instead of sneaking around the outside of her home and shooting her 2 seconds after screaming 'put your hands up'??

    Do not give her so much credit Appreciate her testimony but it really shows how officers follows fellow officers
    She didn’t announce as police
    She said hands up as there was a threat bc her partner did that
    This is terrible

      If I am not mistaken I heard her say she had only been on the job 3 weeks when this happened so she was basically in training where they are sent out with a senior officer that is supposed to show them what to do and they are supposed to follow their senior officer and watch and learn . Even under oath many cops will still lie , she seems like a decent and truly caring person .

    Its good she is telling the truth now, but, remember, she was also skulking around that backyard that night, on a non-emergency call, gun drawn, without announcing herself.
    She either was a bit more cautious than her partner, or a bit slower on the trigger.

    This is how good cops get involved with bad cops . The only problem I see with her is she didn't call for help... Maybe she was scared to. Or in shock of what just happen. She wasn't on force long enough to have been put in such a horrible situation. U can tell her hurt is hurt because she is worried Abt Zion. God bless his heart she clearly said she didn't see no gun. And he never told her she had a gun. They realized she had a gun way after the fact she is in her home. To protect her self and her nephew and looses her life over a trigger happy cop .. poor baby boy.. he was tired and been questioned he could t have said anything like he said he thought he was in a dream stop trying to make him look like he did wrong. That child is scared for life. Aunt pass her dad dies from heart attack after her then her mom dies. Jesus fix it. And his own mother has health issues. Man. I hope someone helps him sue the police department and sit him up for rest of his life with counseling and other care this is sad.
