Weaves, wigs and braids can absolutely help your hair grow because it helps you NOT touch it. Just because it’s in those hairstyles doesn’t mean you ignore it. You wash, deep condition and oil it UPP before putting it away. You can still clean your scalp, you can still add light oils to your scalp and cowash your hair to add moisture to your strands. As long as you know how to properly and gently detangle without ripping your hair out then you win.

Hey, just want to say that you are right, BUT if you did all of that(nourishing the hair and leaving it alone) but minus covering it with any other hair, it will thicken even more than usual because covering it with anything, while not as bad as manipulating it or other things you could be doing that hinder growth, covering it with anything DOES hinder it’s max potential. My hair thickens with wigs and being left alone (and nourished)but thickens even MORE being left alone (and nourished)minus any extra hair covering it or intertwining in it. Even if a man wore a hat everyday and took care of his hair underneath it, even tho his hair may look ok, his hair would still not be as thick as it could be because he wears that hat on top of it everyday. Our hair and scalp actually does love fresh oxygen and water as well, which is why added heavy oils on top of the hair that block water aren’t helping but that’s another topic. It’s possible that your hair is thriving but could be thriving EVEN MORE.
Recently, I stopped doing braids with extensions because of the rising cost of hair braiders pricing. I was one of those who would get my hair braided every 8 weeks. I can wash my hair in twist and now when I take my hair out every 5 weeks my hair is GROWING and even thicker. So I definitely agree with leaving your Hair alone and I even go as far as to say start braiding you own hair !! It's much better than hair pulling extensions.

I wore box braids 6months straight in 2023. Same braids. Didn't take them out. This was me leaving it alone. I still washed and conditioned and did maintenance. June-December my hair grew 5.5inches. Thinking about making content on it
This is the same for me. My hair thrives and goes crazy in braids/twists. I’ve learned products that work and how to style it when it’s down in its natural state.

My hair is extremely easy to do. once I figured out a routine for my hair and proper products. I do knotless braids too I found it to be more protective of the roots that box braids and has grown my hair out a lot
I totally agree. Great video! I wash/deep condition weekly and usually 2-strand twist my natural hair & leave it alone until the next wash day & my hair has grown butt length. A braider asked me what I did to grow it out…just the basics really.
This is so real. I used to use a bunch of products to style my hair. Now all I used is water, a moisturizer cream and oil. Wash day take around 4 hours max with styling included. My hair has been thriving when I learned to twist it and leave it alone.
The simplicity of this explanantion is brilliant and sooooo simple and it just makes sense. Internal and external needs, minimal care, and leave it alone. This is so on point and on time. Thank you for this.
Yep. I was scammed into being a product junkie. Corporations are the biggest evil I swear. I stick to LCO/LOC aside from gel if it's not a liquid cream or oil I don't need it. The hair masks, serums, scrubs, clays, powders, steamers $300 blow dryers (yes I bought the dinosaur rev air and 3 years later it's broken and under my bed) are not needed. I've simplified my wash routine and I no longer have hair anxiety. NGL I still have my textured synthetic wigs and enjoy braid szn but nothing beats your natural hair.
alot of those stuff are a an as-needed basis. a pre poo would work if you got boxbraids and need help detangling it but you don't need it EVERY wash day, deep condition or protein treatment WHEN needed. same thing for grease and oil, its for a as needed basis is your scalp dry add a grease or oil. The biggest thing for natural hair is mosture retention you need the water and products to help you hair keep that hydration in. you don't need 10 products to get and keep your hair hydrated because after that point it does the opposite effect.
Oh this is confirmation for me.. 😮...I've prayed about what could be the reason for my hair plateau. And I honestly accidentally pressed on this video, and this was definitely a sign😭. I hear you God.
Everyone hair is different. Some people need to wash their hair every week and deep condition and moisturize. People want to have long hair put don’t want to put the work in. Your method may work for some BUT some do need to keep to their routine
This is soo well put together . There is this stereo type that “natural hair is hard to take care” an “it takes an long time to style “ but in naturality we just need to treat it an leave it alone to thrive ❤
I grew my hair to my waist with wigs , you can still maintain your hair under a wig or weave … for me my lifestyle as a mother of four it WORKED… but no products don’t matter , except a good detangling conditioner or u can use oils
this video was hilarious, straightforward, and refreshing. Honest without being "mean". I love it! I actually just threw out 3 year old hair products back in January. They were just sitting there, doing nothing but taking up space and reminding me that I had wasted my money. I'm finally starting to wake up.
When you started with water and what we eat. Thats it right there!! Did a whole yr of mini braids (just my hair) and only got 2 inch of length vs my 5in a yr. Im focusing on water and food now with mini twist
Do you notice a difference between mini braids and mini twists fir hair growth?I'm doing mini braids right now and want to be leaving them in for 3 to 4 weeks to retain length. If I want something fancy i wear a wig over them.
It's like a 15 years younger than me got on RUclips and said everything ive been screaming at my family and friends. Im a successful natural because my routine is simple, and i do not try to make my hair do thimgs it doesn't want to do!
Protective styles like braids and twists when done properly do help retain length and quote on quote grow your hair. Its a form of a low minipulation hairstyle that works for a lot of people.
It definitely is a use as you need. I have a picky scalp that if I only did what you described, my scalp would itch to the point where my hair falls out. So scalp treatments are a must. But I agree with the simplicity, my mother "gave up" and basically just wears her hair out in a fro and washes it once every other week and her unexpected results was that the short easy hairstyle she loved became complicated bc it grew so much so fast. She actually geta haircuts to keep it at a shorter length pretty often.
I found my 4 hair products. I haven’t moved since. Shampoo, leave in conditioner (no regular rinse conditioner cause why) gel, and foam. I’m standing on mfn business. I’m a new natural entering into my 2nd year. I never had an issue with being a product junky because I learned my hair.
I'm glad this worked for you. My natural experience is different. My hair is low porosity 3b/3c/4a hair that I grew down to my thighs. I wore weaves for the first 10 years of my journey. The only reason I stopped is because I have too much hair to braid up that now it can't lay flat under a wig cap or sew-in. Do what works best for you. For mea, weaves were the easiest low manipulation style there was. These days I wash once a month, and wear it in a bun and sleep on a satin pillow case.
I really don’t need to wash that often since I refresh/remoisturize every week. Unfortunately washing can be overwhelming and contributes to extra breakage for me.
I’ve gotten to the point where 1.5 hours is too much for me…. And I only do it once every 2-3 weeks. I spend about 45 min to an hour on my hair, because I rarely style my hair now. I bun it and forget it until the next wash. Maybe I’ll get back to all the extra stuff once my kids get older 😢
This is the realist take on growing natural black girl hair. We are the only group of people told that we gotta do hella shit to our hair to make it grow & it’s lies. Only thing I would add is that you can straighten your hair while it’s growing but I’d go to a professional instead of doing it at home because professionals know how to get your hair straight without using too much heat.
I enjoy the overall intent of your content, which seems to be a renewed self love and appreciation for our natural hair- I enjoyed seeing your routine too. Thanks for thoughtful content, seasoned with love, I’m sure. 🙏🏽🙌🏽
I have the same experience with my fine 4 b hair 🥰 Easy and effortless routines + simple and efficients products are the best to make our hair flourish. I personnally love wash and gos.
I agree with a lot of what you said, but!!!! I do think that we all need a pre-pop. I’ve been using the African pride pre poo after my protective styles and it has saved soooooooo much time! To be honest, you can diy that product for free in your own kitchen with aloe vera juice and other essentials you’d like! But great informative video! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My mom was a beautician. I got my hair done every day. It was elbow length. I still do it every day. It's long but not as long as childhood. Mom always said, "You train your hair for what you want it to do."
I rollerset my hair so i def still have long wash days…..i rollerset but i need about a pea sized amount of leave in per section of hair (6 sections) and water and nothing else on my hair until my next wash. once my hair is done, two weeks of nothing but claw clips sometimes and bonnets at night…zero product until wash day. When i wear mini twists same thing, put in the style and it’s zero maintenance for a month. Agree with you that having hair tied up tight and covered doesn’t help it grow having to mess with it a bunch every day or cover it in product doesn’t help it grow either. The less we do to our hair between wash days the better, the healthier.
From a fresh cut to Collar bone length and I’m tempted to do everything 😭 plus my edges are recovering from faux locs 😢 hard cus I’m use to being versatile, but I got thissss
Exactly, it really isn't. Years of relaxing and being told it's "unmanageable" or "hard to deal with" has lead a lot of black women in the west to do extra or unhealthy things to their hair when there's simple ways to take care of it that actually works.
All U said is very true. One of the most important is the way you treat/manipulate your hair, then the food and products...once we understand that, everything can change ...
I grew my hair from Bob to waist length with sewins but I took care hair underneath and used my own hair mixture that reached my scalp and keep scalp clean
Some of this is true for everyone but some of it is not exactly true for everyone. I think we both have a similar hair texture ( mine can be defined as high porosity… 4b/4C) I literally don’t do anything to it but wash it with the Castile soap I use every time I take a shower and add some cream for styling …not even wrapping it before bed and I have grown about 6-7 inches of length with no breakage since my last low cut haircut last January. (Since I actually have a bit of length now, I’m actually about to start a routine, make products, buy a satin scarf etc to give it a boast). However following many other curly girls, for some women who have lower porosity and 4C hair they likely will need a little extra love. I do not think they will need to be in bathrooms for hours every day no… but most 4C’s seem to benefit from a hair stretching routine, to retain length and to keep it from tangling. Also, not everyone does well with store bought synthetic ingredient products. Some women broke their hair plateau and reduced shedding from using organic herbal DIY’s and the vast majority of of women (esp 4C) with significant length and thickness make their own hair products, and recipes. What I will agree with is that you don’t need 100 different products, in fact even if you are DIY, I’ve seen a few women recommend you follow the LCO method which is to have a liquid, cream and oil. Most black women are just gonna have to understand that in order to find a routine that works for you you need to actually be one with your hair and do a bit of trial and error . A lot of women don’t want to do that tho. 😅
Where have you been, friend? I’m a 4B high porosity girlie too plus I have my hair in locs. This weather is a mess right now. My locs are going past my shoulders now.
I’ll do what I can find! I didn’t take a lot of pics tbh, I wore a braided hairstyle a handful of times but for about 90% of my hair journey I was completely natural (even when it was short) What held back my hair growth was restyling throughout the week. Once I left it alone I saw the most hair growth
I love the analyst and comparison of natural hair and it being like a plant. It wouldn't grow if it's hidden under wigs and weaves. (I wear headwraps a LOT) mainly to hide the state of the dookie braids I'm wearing. 😂 But I realized my mindset is just as is important as the physical.
Type 4's (particularly C, etc) who's hair does NOT do this when wet/weighed down - check in and let me know if it could ever really be this simple. 🥴 😩
I’m 4c and I do mini twists instead because it’s not long enough to weigh itself down now but even 4c hair when long weighs down with water. I recommend ‘Klassically kept’ here on YT she’s not 4c but her principles work for 4c girlies
Yes I’m type 4 and I’ve learned less steps/products is better. I do a leave in and mousse. I stopped gel. After I wash and deep condition it takes me 1 hr max to detangle, apply products and twist. My hair is to the middle of my back when straight. If you have low porosity hair you may not need to re-moisturize for a week but I’m high porosity so after 4 days it feels dry. I moisturize and seal with natural oil. Mid week moisturize takes me 20 min.
It can! Shampoo, conditioner/deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, cream or butter. Twist or plait and leave it alone. Sleep with a bonnet or scarf. Repeat next week.
Idk my hair grows being in braids for 15 'leven months out the year. I'm so dead ass serious. I've been watching how my hair thrives & this is the conclusion I've drawn from my experiments on hairstyles & the length said hairstyle is in.
Protective styles are too heavy. They mess up my edges, thin my hair, and give me TERRIBLE split ends. I grew my hair long by leaving it alone. I cut it all off when a stylist FRIED it with a flat iron in 2019. Since then i started over. I'm enjoying braids here and there, but my length now is NOTHING like it was last time when i never wore protextive styles. Know your own hair ladies!
Heavy on “it needs to be left alone”. The girls say they spend about 3-4 hours a day on their hair and I find that outrageous. It should be 3-4 hours a week. I have pretty thin 4c hair so I wear clip ins to blend. I spend about 2 hours a week on my hair. I shampoo, condition, blow dry then flat twist down. I might start adding a hair foam and styling gel after my showers soon which will only add an extra 5-10 mins.
Ok I’m happy to hear about your routine. I was shamp, condition, mousse while wet. But I like blow drying. It does feel weird not putting anything else on it because it’s not long enough to do French braids or pony tail yet. When I was a kid we use pink moisture lotion. Still trying to figure if I’m missing steps. The creams and gels always leave residue and feel heavy.
@@Austinflwrz instead of styling gel, I found the foam was enough. Sometimes I foam, twist 4 sections and go to bed. Once every 2-3 weeks I’ll blow dry after the shower just to check length. Maybe I’ll wear my hair stretched for a day or two then go back to styling with foam.
For me I DEFINITELY needed a pre-poo! Not everything is the same for everyone. Washing my hair with pre-poo was a day saver and GAME CHANGER. I appreciate your enthusiasm about natural hair and wanting Black Woman to embrace their hair but Black Hair treatment isn’t a one size fits all kind of thing
See the only thing I disagree with is the protective styling. Why would PROTECTION be bad? If I don’t put my hair in twists or box braids, I have to wear an afro or puff. To maintain either, I have to detangle each morning and twist it in each night. Otherwise I get a matted, terribly shrunken mess. That’s constant manipulation that puts me at risk for unnecessary breakage, not to mention hassle since I have thick 4c hair. Tight protective styles with zero maintenance are a problem. But for my girls out there who know their natural hair don’t like a constant fro, don’t let a RUclips video (with good intentions albeit) scare you out of it by them saying what works for them. We’re all different ❤
I have in mini twists right now (with extensions though cuz I love a lil extra length) and I just put my own little spray of water, conditioner and rosemary oil followed by some jojoba oil on just my scalp every 2 to 3 days and that’s it for moisture. I wash my hair in the twists once a week and am seeing growth. Now I promise if I had to detangle and pick out and detangle and pick out and detangle and pick out over and over again, breakage would’ve already told me about myself lol
I'm a mini twists girlie (no extensions) I was afraid to leave my hair loose for your exact reasoning. They key to loose hair without factors that cause breaking, such as matting, tangling, ssks, ect., is hydration and moisture. I took my twists down because I wanted to enjoy my hair like every other race of ppl, and with those two steps, my hair has been loose with no breakage. I put my hair into 4-6 sections, hydrate and moisturize those sections as needed. I shampoo once a week, and use med-cool heat to dry. I didn't know that loose natural hair was this easy! But the hair CAN'T get dry. Dryness invites tangles, matting, and disasters. A far as styling, I only wear my hair completely down 2 days out of the week minimum. I wear loose fluffy buns with the ends tucked. Just make sure to switch up the bun positioning to prevent tension breakage. If I want to switch up and do a different low manipulation style, I will!
Yes less it more, but is that considered a wash n go that you’re doing to your hair? cuz we’ve seen the damages of wash n gos when the hair gets straightened.
So if you don't spend any more time that week styling it, and you don't use a protective style... how do you style it during the week? My hair is always frizzy and bushy after a day or 2 (layered medium hair problems)
I perseve it at night. I usually used 4-6 braids or the scrunchie method when I go to sleep. However most of the time I add scrunchies. I fluff it a little so it’s not flat from going to sleep.
This is my same routine! When God made Adam and Eve.. they ate healthy(NOT FAST FOODS/Junk Food)..and weaves, wigs were not around. Care for your hair!..Deep condition and oil your hair! Use heat seldom on a low setting and ALWAYS use a hair protectant! Your hair dry like a cactus? Moisture it!
I can hear ai now getting put in my feed- “men don’t want lazy”😅😅let it be then cause spending that much money and energy fighting my curls just to sweat out a couple hours later isn’t it. I don’t want a man that bad, ai, thanks.

Right now that I’m curly, I do put oil and a leave in conditioner after I wash. It hasn’t been long enough to see the progress but we shall see
@@msJimiBaduDid you get your locs unraveled at your stylist or did you do that yourself?
@@mssydneil I tried taking out my locs but to me the time wasn’t worth it so I ended up shaving my head and growing it out from there
@@msJimiBadu How long were they? Mine are to my shoulders now.
My hair is extremely easy to do. once I figured out a routine for my hair and proper products. I do knotless braids too I found it to be more protective of the roots that box braids and has grown my hair out a lot
Love to hear it 🫶🏾
I totally agree.
Wow! I felt like that rev-air was a scam. An expensive scam. Smh
alot of those stuff are a an as-needed basis. a pre poo would work if you got boxbraids and need help detangling it but you don't need it EVERY wash day, deep condition or protein treatment WHEN needed. same thing for grease and oil, its for a as needed basis is your scalp dry add a grease or oil.
Yes girl!! Thank you!
U just held me accountable. I got a lot of products I don’t even use that has been sitting for two years 😂
I grew my hair to my waist with wigs , you can still maintain your hair under a wig or weave … for me my lifestyle as a mother of four it WORKED… but no products don’t matter , except a good detangling conditioner or u can use oils
this video was hilarious, straightforward, and refreshing.
Hii, Do you deep condition your hair? Or do you go straight to using a leave in, after shampooing?
@@rosslynnewman9170I use a great leave in after I’m done conditioning and shampooing. Then blow dry
@@rosslynnewman9170 I deep condition once a month. Other than that no.
Exactly! Hair needs sun, wind, water, mist, natural elements to thrive and flourish.
This is my exact routine!! I rarely see anyone else with this simple routine!
I really don’t need to wash that often since I refresh/remoisturize every week. Unfortunately washing can be overwhelming and contributes to extra breakage for me.
Hey im glad you know what works for you!
Having kids is such a game changer I can't spend time on my hair like I used to
I spend a whole work shift on my hair 😂 every 2 weeks.
SAME!!
You dont have to go back to all the crazy stuff that regimen plus twists with ends tucked vs a bun is gold.
Low manipulation. DC and protein treatments. Twist and moisturize. Keep scalp clean.
Eat properly and that does not mean fast food.
You’re right. Keep it simple. Easy-peasy. That’s what we did in the 70’s. And our hair grew and thrived. Great video ❤
Yup! She's right! I leave my 4c hair alone in knotless braids, maintain it, and retain length.

I totally agree!
I like your thought process and I am all in. I truly believe we need three products just like you said.
My mom was a beautician. I got my hair done every day. It was elbow length. I still do it every day. It's long but not as long as childhood. Mom always said, "You train your hair for what you want it to do."
Love ❤this and your soo right! Ever since I stopped protective styling and kept it simple my hair has grown sooo much!
Thank you so much!!! Glad your hair is growing
i get deep conditioners, protein treatments, oils, leave in’s and shampoos lol that’s it; and multi purpose them for different things
From a fresh cut to Collar bone length and I’m tempted to do everything 😭 plus my edges are recovering from faux locs 😢 hard cus I’m use to being versatile, but I got thissss
your hair is sooooo beautiful! best explanation ive heard by far.

Wow, thank you! You're so sweet!
Easy! Yes. Im so annoyed by bw claiming it's so hard. Like really 😅
Exactly, it really isn't. Years of relaxing and being told it's "unmanageable" or "hard to deal with" has lead a lot of black women in the west to do extra or unhealthy things to their hair when there's simple ways to take care of it that actually works.
you are so amazing. speaking sm truth
Thank you!! I try I try! I'll be uploading similar content!!
All U said is very true. One of the most important is the way you treat/manipulate your hair, then the food and products...once we understand that, everything can change ...
The yeast bread took me tf out
I grew my hair from Bob to waist length with sewins but I took care hair underneath and used my own hair mixture that reached my scalp and keep scalp clean
May I ask: how often do you wash/shampoo your hair? Every other week? And when you do wash it do you deep condition treatment at all?
I like this video ❤the vibes and the truth ❤
Any good products to use for dry brittle hair ?
Shampoo , condition and style your hair weekly and leave it alone. Get trims when needed and use water soul able products .
What styles were you doing when it was short ? Can you do a hair journey and include pics
Head wraps are different though, they’re breathable!! So you can def wear them
❤ omg thaaaank you sweetheart ❤️ the truth is the truth
Tbh same as long as I keep it moisturized
Thank you for the info😊
the way u explained it is funny ur so cute
Thank you so much!!
Are you saying that you wear your hair out most of the time? If so how (twist out, braid out, wash and go, afro...) ?
@@sonoxi1756 I wear it in twists and twist outs. Sometimes I wear high puffs, braid outs, and.... I'm trying to learn wash-n-gos.
You’re right..CHA CHING !!!!!!
New sub! ❤
What's your wash day routine?
If you add foam or styling gel after showers, do you mean you will stop blow drying altogether? Just wondering what’s been working for ya. x
@@pinkena8829 ok cool, makes sense Tysm!
The Hannibal reference!
😅🤣😂 Love this! So true!
how do you go about your wash days? are you a shower or a sink girlie?
I mix it up sis! I do both. I think the sink is better if you don’t know what you’re doing. But clean up is easier in the shower
Good information 👍
For me I DEFINITELY needed a pre-poo! Not everything is the same for everyone. Washing my hair with pre-poo was a day saver and GAME CHANGER. I appreciate your enthusiasm about natural hair and wanting Black Woman to embrace their hair but Black Hair treatment isn’t a one size fits all kind of thing
You are right.
Investigate hair stretching styles. I think she’s talking about styles that use hair extensions or sew ins
Idk sew ins grew my hair like crazy. I would get the girl texture and oil it once a week… hair grew so longggg
This video is nothing but the truth.

How often do you use shampoo?
I use it maybe between 2-4 times a month!
