- Phalaenopsis orchids are the most popular orchids we can find. This is mainly because, apart from their beautiful long lasting flowers, they are quite easy to keep in a normal home. The trickiest part is watering. There are many theories on how to water these orchids, so today I will present you the safest routine I have found with my orchids. Enjoy!

Hey guys! Just reminding you that in the description you will find additional links related to today's video and also links to my Orchid Care for Beginners series, Care Tutorials for Phalaenopsis, Cattleyas, Oncidiums, etc., links to products I use & more! I receive so many comments and messages daily on all my platforms, it is impossible for me to get to all, but I try to link videos on the most common questions in the descriptions of my videos. You can also search for answers on almost ALL orchid related topics by typing in the RUclips search bar 'missorchidgirl' followed by the orchid subject you want to learn more about! I have many many videos and I think you'll find a video from me on the subject, just in case I don't get to answer your comment. Thank you! 😘🧡
you all probably dont care but does someone know a method to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Malcolm Winston Instablaster =)
@Rodrigo Devon thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Rodrigo Devon It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
@Malcolm Winston no problem xD
I've been a botanist for over 30 years and have been exposed to a lot of tutorials and classes. Your videos are by far the BEST I have ever heard. You cover everything in a practical and easy to understand way. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial. None of that useless blabbing that too many tutorials have. . Clear, concise, straight to the point. Just the useful information. Not a time waster. Full marks. Ten on ten.
Her voice is perfect for tutorial videos! Thanks for all of the tips. I'm new to orchids and this has all been very helpful.
+Hector Mercado thanks for watching, I'm glad my videos help :D
Yes :) it's very nice and clear and very informative.
She says orchit
She can hear you...
Yes, she has a beautiful voice. I wonder where she's from.
Love the "silvery grey root" tip!!! Now I know exactly when my orchid needs water. Thank You!
Mj Povey wonderful advise
Yes, good tip
When someone gives you this as a gift, and then you realize how much work it is to take care of it.
Exact,y!
It’s so easy. Did we watch the same video? The plant literally tells you when it wants water.
@@V21bh do I have to repot it after buying it from store?
@@anaphylaxis6599 not exactly, depends of the state of medium/roots.
@@anaphylaxis6599 if the roots are squishy and brown cut them off, but you dont need a different pot or new orchid mix to do so, simply remove the orchid cut the bad roots and carefully "plant" your orchid into the same potting container using the same mix
I am so thankful to you. I Wouldn’t even dare to watch somebody else on care and planting of orchids. You are the absolute best.i am a true fan!
Awsome and helpful. Your great. Here I go to repot my 2nd orchid. Wish me luck!😉
I have been following your advice for a year, and my orchids continue to bloom beautifully! You are the BEST! Formerly, my orchids died!
I just purchased my first orchid. I knew absolutely nothing about their care but I always loved them. I’ve rushed home and got on RUclips right away, so I can be informed. I am so happy that I found your channel. The information you provide is so easy to understand and so informative. You’ve answered all my questions within two videos. You’ve gained a forever follower.
Thank you
I was one of the ice cube waterers (just following the directions that came with the orchid). I've had it bloom 3 years in a row. I didn't know it came in a separate pot. Thank you for the better instructions.
I am new with Orchids, and found this very helpful. I too enjoyed listening to her soothing voice.
I was handed an orchid by my mother-in-law as an unexpected gift and it was like being handed a baby and told to look after it. I had no knowledge, tools or equipment. I had no knowledge of how to care for ANY house plant in fact. If it wasn't for your channel my orchid would have died a long time ago. Thank you so much!
This is the best video I have seen on watering this type of orchid. Everyone else tells you to give 3 ice cubes per week and doesn’t explain why. You explained what to look for and why you use these methods and now I feel confident to give better watering to my orchid. I can’t wait to continue my collection.
My brother got me a white orchid that has been dyed blue for my birthday. I would never buy artificially colored flowers for myself, but I know it will revert back. I am determined to keep it alive! Just put it in water and started a timer for 10 minutes. :)
Excellent video on watering Orchids. You are my go-to Orchid person. Your videos are very well done and well presented. I like that your voice is steady and you don't go fast as to get the info to us correctly. Thanks again.
The tip about root color as a watering indicator is a real winner. It seems that by accident I've been watering my orchids properly. "Benign neglect" isn't a bad thing, if you don't overdo it.
Wow, Thank you I am new to growing Orchid plants and the like you said the clerk in the store told me to put ice cubes in my orchid plants and it was working for a while but I was still wondering when to water them cause she said that it doesn't like too much water so I said I will just watch to see if the plant will show me and now I looked at this morning and two of the blossoms are withering and I quickly ran in here to the computer to find out what to do so now I see the whole story of my plants. Thank you so much and your voice is wonderful for explaining and teaching how to care for your expensive Orchid plant. Thank you so much I will be watching
Danny Not only are you well versed and knowledgeable about orchids of all types but you also have the perfect public speaking voice. Your videos are awesome! I’ve been growing these gorgeous flowers for almost 20 years but still learn something new each time I watch your videos. Thx so much!!!
And thank you for this tutorial because everything I was not suppose to do I was doing it. Thank you!
Wonderfully useful, clear and insightful. Thank you for explaining "why" to water the way you suggest as well as "how", and for approaching the subject from different directions, dispelling bad advice along the way.
Omg, FINALLY! PROPER LEGIT PROFESSIONAL ADVICE AND ANSWER TO ALL MY PROBLEMS, THAAAAANK YOU!!!!!😘😘😘
This was so helpful. I just thought if I forgot about the plant for a few weeks and then watered it it would live. I never knew why this seemed to be. Thank you, you may have saved a orchids life.
Danny, you're kicking ass with these videos!! You go girl!! Way to take it to the next level! :)
***** awwwww thanks :P it's one of the most requested videos hehe Phals still rule the world
Tell me about it! I just bought another damn phalaenopsis today, and I couldn't stop because it was so cute! I don't even like phals that much!!

MissOrchidGirl hi can you please help me out I did comment on this video but I don't think you've seen it. I need help with my 9 year old phalanopsis orchid
@@leahrussell4454 If you've a none year old Orchid you dont need any help 😀
Thanks!
My pleasure, thank you! 🧡
I am new to the phalaenopsis orchid and just got one as a gift. They come with a tag but it is not good imfo. Like it doesn't tell you if you transplant it to use media instead of regular potting soil because potting soil holds moisture to long causing root rot. The one I received is so pretty with lots of blooms and buds and I didn't want it to die, so I thought I would do some research. Glad I took the time because someone told me to put two or three ice cube on it once a week. I am no expert but I thought I don't know of any house plants that like ice cold water so I thought the ice might damage the roots. Good video, Glad that I took the time to Google watch a couple of short videos because I am going to transplant mine in a few days. Good luck to all of us who are new to this beautiful plant. Thank you for the great video. God Bless.
You didnt say anything that i didnt already know, but its nice to have a second oppinion to know someone else is doing the same as me ....thank you
I just received one for Mother’s Day and you have answered all of my questions. Thank you.
I love your videos! They are clear, concise, and to the point! Keep up the great work! Thank you so much!
My FAV Orchid repotting video!! Just repotted all of my Orchids and my two large ones have flower spikes that I cut back after they bloomed so hoping they rebloom!!❤️🥰
I was just gifted a Phal she is so pretty. Normally I'm not very god at caring for plants so I decided to RUclips. I am so glad I found your site. My phal was potted in really tight moss most of the roots had rotted with help from your videos I just repotted her. Fingers crossed she does well.
Great video. With covid 19 lockdown I can now give my orchids some love and attention, and get into a better routine with them. Just what I needed to hear. Many thanks.
I’m going to do the same thing.
Great info. I am starting to realize its a miracle that mine is growing a flower stem, let alone surviving. I thought spraying the leaves was helpful and the roots are soaking in water most of the time! It also badly needs to be repotted. With your advices, I feel more equipped to care for it. Thank you. PS Beautiful hands!
I am new to looking after orchids and your videos make me want to do the job well! Thankyou and I will keep watching 👍😘
Im new to orchids, rescued 7 now, at a wopping price of $2.00 thats how bad they were, if it wasn't for your videos they all would have gone to god, thank you thank you, all have been saved looking great, sending out shoots, leaves and even 2 spikes, just love them, keep up the great work, cant wait for your next video.
I'm also new to orchids after my son gave me a Phalaenopsis for Mothers' Day. These videos are great and she speaks very clearly. Hopefully by following her many tips my orchid will last for many years. Diane
+Diane Lowery Thanks Diane :D
Thanks! All the guides I found said to check the color of the roots but they never mentioned if i should be looking at the arial roots or the ones in the pot. You just saved me from giving my new orchid water it doesn’t need.
Thought I'd watch a vid or two to find out how to properly care for my phals and I ended up watching all of them! Great job, best orchid channel out there, both informative and enjoyable. Lots of love from Greece
I've wanted an orchids for a long time and after watching this video I'm going to get one
I accidentally soaked 10 mins give or take my orchids in probiotics and with that moss and almost killed them…..mold issues …..live and learn. Definitely repotted it. And I have repotme FEED ME mist spray …..not doing that again. Learning from your vids.❤ My life has been so crazy never had time for a hobby ! Trying my best with the help of your vids.
I got a beautiful moth orchid for my birthday this year, thanks for a very informative video for beginners like me!
Thank you Danni! For the first time in my life I have managed to grow my own Phalenopsys orchid!! My first flower spike has produced 10 blooms. Thank you for your advice!!
Thank you for the video! I realized from watching this that I have been using the wrong method to water my orchid, and that's why the potting mix in it was drying up so fast. I had no idea all of the potting mix needs to be wet by water, or that the outside roots need to be hydrated too. I will be following your method from now on for my orchid. :)
Glad to help, hope your orchid will do great for you :D
How to grow ginger flower
Bless you for explaining things so simply yet thoroughly. I'm a complete beginner but you explain not only what to do but WHY to do it so much better than any other source I've found so far.
New to orchids. Your videos are really helping me. Thanks!
Thanks for all the information. I have always set out my water in jugs to water all my house plants and when I started with orchids I didn't have luck and I did try the ice cube method and as you said "No good" so I starting watering by putting all my orchids and my air plants all on a cookie sheet and water them all at the same time and either let them set all day or even overnight before putting them back in their respective places. I appreciate your videos as they are very informative and finally I have success!
Hello MissOrchidGirl. First I would like to say that I have found your videos very informative, educational and helpful. Even though I have been trying to care for and grow Phalaenopsis orchids for years, I have been unsuccessful until my most recent purchase. It managed to survive and produce a second bloom, second stem off one of the main stems, and even a new stem. However, when it comes to watering and humidity, I am struggling as to the best care. Humidity, humidity, humidity is the biggest challenge for me. I live in a very low humidity environment (frequently below 20%). So, I have taken some extreme measures to try and increase the humidity. I put my pot in a pan filled with gravel and fill the pan with water to help increase the humidity. I place several bowls of water around the plant to help with increasing the humidity. I run 3 x humidifiers at night to try and increase the humidity. On good days, I can get the humidity up to 40% to 60%. But, on most days, I can get the humidity only up to 30% to 40%. It may be worth noting that I live in a desert region where the humidity is frequently low. Do you have any suggestions as to anything else I can do to increase the humidity? Should I buy more humidifiers? They run up my electrical bill, but I don't mind that all that much. I place my plant next to a window with the shades partly closed so it gets indirect sunlight. Overall, the plant looks healthy. The leaves are nice and green and the flowers bloom but quickly fall off. Any suggestion about humidity control would be appreciated.
Now, about watering. I was using the ice cube technique about once a week and watering with a fertilizer about once a month. I never soaked my orchids in water for 10 to 15 minutes. I was never comfortable with the ice cube technique because it seemed counter-intuitive for a tropical plant. The tap water in my area leaves very hard mineral deposits requiring me to clean my humidifiers at least once a week. When I water my orchid with tap water, I am concerned about the effect these hard mineral deposits will have on my orchid. Therefore, I am considering changing my water habits. Initially, I thought about using bottled spring water until I saw your video. Now, I am considering soaking my orchid in distilled water once every two weeks, and watering with a fertilizer once every two weeks.
Like I said, my orchid seems to be healthy overall, but lately we have been having temperatures about 100 F (38 C) and humidity below 20%. My latest blooms are rapidly falling off, and I am beginning to get concerned about my watering habits and humidity control. Can you please help with some advice? Thank you.
Hi John, I will try to help as much as I can. Ok so Phalaenopsis, they are not very picky with humidity, 40% is just great for them, mine endured even lower than that is ummer. The key is to keep them hydrated properly :) but.. I have an alternative.. how about a humidity tent? ruclips.net/video/xx1vBvMUj8Q/видео.html now keep in mind I am very poor at DIY, so you can imporve it, just take the idea. Also you can place the humidifier closer to it, with a small fan. You don;t need to humidify an entire room maybe, just an area. Also consider mini greenhouses ruclips.net/video/-HO3eYY4AiE/видео.html
Ok about ta water. I used tap water of about 180 ppm without problem, however in my current place I have 350.. it is too much. So it depends how hard your water is. You can improve it by using either distilled water, or filtered water (you know those filtering cans?), or invest in an osmosis system which is the most costly thing (the basic one should be around 60 euro, depends on your region) but it also depends how many plants you have as well. if it's one or two, it's not much hassle to buy or filter some water with the can. if you have more orchids, the osmosis will be worth it. I hope you managed to find some helpful tips overall and hope you will find a better way to deal with humidity in your climate. Let me know!
Thank you very much with your advice and feedback. You have given me alternative solutions to consider. I greatly appreciate it.
my pleasure and good luck!
Danny! The best orchid grower on RUclips! You rock xxx
Finally I understand when to water my orchids. Thank you Danny!
When ? I still don’t understand from the video . How do you know it’s time to water your orchid ?
this was incredibly helpful! thank you! I have had several ochids and I ended up killing them one way or another . Now I can say I finally know how to care for them!
This is really very helpful. I am new to orchids collection this video is very informative.
I had a watering question but you nailed it with this video, thanks Danny!
Your voice is amazing for teaching something as joyful as orchid maintenance! I am reporting all my orchids (about 20) just like you teach and things are much better: lots of new leaves, lots of spikes. Thank you!
Thank you for your help! I had no idea how to take care of an orchid and recently received one as a gift. So beautiful. Your videos are perfect. Good information given in an easy-to-understand format. Thanks again.
😱😱😱OMG!!! I read up how to care for my orchid and lo and behold, I was doing everything wrong!!! Just a bit of water via some ice cubes! Ice cubes and once a week🤦♀️.
This video is awesome. Thank you.
Thanks
My pleasure, thank you! 🧡
your videos are a wonderful resource for an aspiring orchid grower -- you also spell out the time it takes for effects to happen in the plant itself.
You make so much sense, especially about the ice cubes. I've always thought rain isn't passed through a ice box first, especially in the tropics
The best advice on plant care I have ever heard. Loved this and so will my Orchids!
Thank you, wonderful teacher!!
(And YES...your voice is so easy to listen to..just PURRfect for instructional videos.)
Thanks so much for all the instruction. I have three phalaenopsis orchids.
I love your voice, clear, gentle and perfect for a tutorial. I live in Australia and was gifted a very large orchid (5 orchids) planted in a ceramic pot which I think will need to be translpanted as I think the medium is only sphagnam moss and planted directly in the pot 🙁
Thank you for your step by step tutorials - keep them coming as they are very informative.
Great tutorial video on watering Phalaenopsis orchids. It is a good recapitulation of your video :"How to care for Phalaenopsis Orchids - Watering, fertilizing, reblooming". My first orchid was one grown by the company saying to use ice to water "Phal" orchids. I noticed that after several waterings, the roots turned brown in the places where the ice touched them. At that point I went searching RUclips to see if this was standard practice. You and other sources recommended the procedure you demonstrated. The second thing is reuse of the excess water. I use the excess water from the watering of my 2 orchids to water my other plants all of which are tropical shrubs and dwarf citrus fruit trees. They greatly benefit from the excess water that contains orchid fertilizer.
I have the same kind of orchid and wondered how it could be happy with ice touching it. A new alpine cultivar?, I wondered. Nope. A company worried that overwatering would discourage buying other plants. How can I tell if I've received a mini? By the time I took it from my friend, who'd gotten it as a hospital plant, the only thing left was a brown, woody stalk about 10" tall, no flowers. The biggest leaf is 2 1/2" wide by 6" long.
I'm sad I didnt find this video sooner. Currently I know most of these informations, but like 2-3 years ago I couldn't keep my orchids alive and this video would be really helpful back then. Usually people don't explaing orchid care this good
I am a new orchid owner and I am glad that I saw your video😅😅
Wow sounds to easy to understand her, she really want to teach people to care plants... I like this info...
Finally I found someone who waters their orchids like me. I'm still pretty new to the world of orchids but I have one that has been blooming for over a year and I do the same exact watering method, even though everyone else seems to do it weekly and only a cup or two at a time, which to me is crazy b/c then the orchid is sitting in the water. Though I never really thought about the hardness or mineral content of my water. I use tap, but have used bottle here and their for touch up watering or for creating a humid climate inside the decorative pot that has a raise incline to keep the orchid from actually getting wet but those are good and useful tips that I can know take into consideration. I also never consider not pouring water directly over the leaves and such, I've never tried to do it on purpose but also never notice if I did. Great info thanks!!
This video is so good! I will finally feel comfortable taking care of my orchids.
Thanx for this video, it really help me understand grow to care for the orchid
Thank you Danny for providing great instructions on watering orchids; my orchids were saved thanks to you!!!
Thank you for your video. I had the last potting type you talked about and didn't know it retained water so well. I watered 12 days ago and it's still moist!
I've been doing this for years, I'm so glad, your proving my point correct. However I'm only soaking for about 2 minutes at a time about every 8 to 9 days. I also use luke warm tap water. A local orchid grower said our tap water is perfectly fine for watering.I'm in the process of rehabilitating a friends phals that were planted in rotted moss with old planting medium and shipping peanuts in the bottom of the pot. Repotted all in fresh chips in new plastic pots, I'm a believer in letting the light get at the roots. Also these were watered with ice so I have soaking these from the bottom also.
Hi Danny. It's so nice to have videos like this for beginners. People just don't know. Here in the U. S. the phals come in sphagnum moss that's packed so tight it resembles concrete. The next time someone buys a phal. I hope they also watch this video!
Burr Nelson well I hope they do, but statistically I believe only 10% of people who buy orchids actually look for information about them, they might not know there is info available or might not care enough to keep them for a long time. This is why companies like Just Add Ice work :)
Excellent video, so easy to understand and very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you! I am a long-time plant geek, but just got into Orchards. Thank you for your tutelage!
Thank you for being so thorough! The comment about bark chips vs soil was something I didn’t know so I’m now going to go fix that 😳
Thank you everyone soo much. I've learned about from you. 💗
Great tips, clear and to the point. Thank-you!
Thank you so much, the video on how to properly water the Orchid, it really helped seeing that every web site has a different answer
Ellie Wagenti well there are different ways to water and it depends on environment, but I always try to chose the safest method :)
Very clearly explained and informative. I feel much confident in watering and adding more orchids to my indoor plants. Thank you. 🌱💚🌱
Very thorough and helpful instructions for this novice. Thank you much!
Such a fabulous video...I bought 2 orchids and this is so helpful 👌
Amazing video.
Thank you :) I was told at work that it was too much work to take care of an orchid, but thanks to you now I know it is not!
Now I know what a Sphagnum is. Thank you for the link provided, I just ordered a premium blended orchid mixes. Great video how to water the orchid makes so much sense.
Your voice is soooo soothing😊 🌸🌺💖💜🌷
This video is so informative!! I was afraid that I'm not watering my mini phalaenopsis Orchid properly, because it's in a small pot with not the soil that she has in her orchid pot, but sphagnum moss. Good to know that it's not needed to soak it, but just add a little bit of water from the top.
Your information is so helpful. I wait each day to learn more on my new found hobby and passion. I can't thank you enough. Tom
Hi Tom, so happy my videos help :D glad you enjoy them!
Thanks alot Dany!
I managed to safe my orchid, which I mistreated for 2 years.
I thought that orchids don't need much water, so it got really dehydrated.
After mistreating it for 2 years, I found your channel and I'm happy to say, that now I have
a lot of orchids, which are growing fantastic.
Keep going!

Hi, glad to have helped :D they look great, just be careful with water left on the leaves and crowns, try to maintain them dry to avoid rotting :) only water the roots if possible and all should be fine :)
I learned today that I shouldn't be watering from the top which I have been doing. The problem I have other orchids which different watering needs. I think I have been watering too often but I live in Florida and have watering twice a week and am not sure . But thank you for the info.
Best voice for RUclips videos :) So helpful in every video; thanks!
Excellent video. I'm having success with my orchids for the first time. Thank you.
Well, Miss Orchid, Aren't you just a breath of fresh air! I have been left sooo uninspired and unenlightened by either the 'nose-in-the air' blue hairs, the 'know-it-alls' who leave out very important info, or the 'Haven't-really-got-a-clue' but "Hey, Try This" types.
I wish I would have found your channel much, much earlier, and I'm sure, so would "My Girls". I have 3 Phals and 1 very new (to me) Cimbidian (spelling?) I've done pretty well until now, but my medi sized Phals looks too similar to your "H I w to Save..." video, although she does still have 4 or 5 aerial roots, but a long unhealthy stem. My oldest is actually my healthiest. and the poor darling has been dropped twice had several way too cold nights, and a repotting that almost killed her. My smallest is some sort of miniature Phals and just too cute for words - but very slow growing compared to the other two.
I'll go right to your Web site & get lessons on my newest one. Thank you, thank you, AND Thank you for the intelligent, clear, and pleasant explanations. It is easy to see how much enjoyment you & surely, your orchids get from one another. I'm turning into such a fan, too -and now with you as my "Coach" I will be more likely to buy those $5 orchids than can easily be saved with a little TLC. Yay!
awesome video, thank you. The best tutorial I've found.
It's nice to know I'm doing SOMETHING somewhat right!! ;^D I gained a lot from watching and am eager to put this knowledge to good use.
The root tip helped me as well. Thank you!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for these videos. I am a second time owner of a beauty blue sapphire orchid. As you can guess the first time didn't go soo well. I over watered 😣 so this time around im making sure to get as much info as possible and thanks to this video and, a few others ive seen on this channel, ive learned enough to feel confident i won't be killing my orchid.
Thanks for the informative video.. i have mine yesterday Thats why I search for this vlog. Nice tips
Thank you MissOrchidGirl! I think I found your information in the nick of time to be able to save my orchid. I never had luck with them in the past, but now I am more confident than ever before. Thank you once again, I look forward to more of your incredible videos!
I soak my orchids for about 20 minutes, but during that time I also spray and mist the rest of the plant including leaves and air roots ( but not the flowers) . I've been doing that for a past year with a high success rate. This mimics a natural habitat of a rainforest.
So far I've had 4 different phalaenopsis bloomed ( out of 12 ) .
From now on I'll pay more attention to water pooling inside leaves by the stem, thanks to your video.
Orchids do absorb water and nutrients through their leaves and air roots, so why not mist them while soaking.
mar1video You are right. If you live in low humidity like I do misting is very beneficial. In fact, I mist with very dilute fertilizer.
After watching these videos and reading so many comments I started giving my orchids a bath in the sink (well water), with room temperature water, whenever the medium gets completely dry (sometimes weekly, sometimes monthly). Between baths, I mist with a very diluted orchid food whenever the aerial roots turn silvery. I’ve seen a massive change in leaf and root growth by doing this. No bloom stalks after 6 months but all damaged or lost leaves and roots have been replaced with lush, very healthy feeling/looking replacements so I’m thinking the orchids are happy with this arrangement. I’ll be very excited if I do see a bloom stalk start, especially on my cymbidium.

This is awesome lecture for orchids....thank u for posting
Very good and easy to follow
That's where I'm going wrong in watering..... need to use the silvery green root method thankyou
