Also a fun tidbit of information: Since every character can have any second class (primrose can be a warrior, a cleric or a scholar, etc. which goes for everyone), and therefore any move, the devs gave different battle quotes for those moves depending on the character: Cyrus won't say the same thing if he uses a cleric ability than what Ophelia or Therion would say. There are some overlaps but overall i think it's a great way to add a unique quality to every character!
Lady Pelvic, I really am digging your reviews!!! It is easy to see how much enthusiasm you have for these games. For me, you analyze the games very thoroughly, and break down all of the positives and negatives of all of the systems. THAT, is very important, because in the past, I have bought games without knowing something like, oh, an active time battle system, which I am now finally starting to enjoy, but would like to know such systems ahead of time. Your videos are like talking to a friend and asking them about features and quirks that will help me make up my mind about whether I will purchase a game or not. Your honesty is refreshing, and you are pretty funny as well. Keep making these awesome videos. Being a big fan of the first 2 Suikodens, I am looking forward to more of your videos about the entire series. I bought them all, but have yet to play the rest of the series. Keep up the great work!!!
I had no idea how much this game had going for it. I definitely need to play it before I do my 2018 top ten list and need to get the soundtrack into my playlists. Glad the battles keep you on your toes and aren't just spamming the attack button too.
Favorite character is by far Tressa. Favorite characters theme is also Tressa. Also Tressa's For Treasure + Decisive Battle 1 gives me goosebumps. Wish I could play more than 4 chapters for her.
Finally got around to playing this game! I picked Cyrus as my starting character based solely on his ability to read enemy weaknesses, not knowing his personality at all. He and Therion are my favorite characters.
The optional bosses are so powerful cuz there are cheese strats that allow you to wreck them like 30 levels early. I assumed this is as designed, for Speedrun purposes, so I'm glad I avoided looking them up til after my first playthrough
Maybe I'm spoiled from Fire Emblem having ridiculously inter-connected character relationship options, (and with waay more than 8 characters) but my central complaint was lack of interactivity; I wish having certain party members in others' stories had more effect and that there were specific routes/items/stories that could only be obtainable through certain combinations. I think it would deepen the world and add replay value to the extreme. Also, I'm someone who likes English dubs and ADR, but boy... I've never heard a game with so many talented actors sound so.. - uh, clashy? - against the direction of the game. I know you like Cyrus, but him and H'aanit were hard to listen to for me sometimes. I think the FF6 style was perfectly reworked, but that style and tone don't sound great when voiced; I would've taken it all much more seriously had I just read the dialogue. P.S. I can't believe you didn't mention Leon. Dreeeaaammy.
I really loved the minimalistic story they had going here, felt like a bit of a call back to the SaGa series, and gave me serious flashbacks to SaGa Frontier and Live a Live (I wish they had localized this one).
Ooh, the music! The track "Determination" playing during Primrose's final boss fight blew me away. Excuse me, I'll be listening to that song for the next hour at least :-)
Path actions are divided into noble and rogue paths (that might not be the exact term). That's why they are duplicated because there is a good and "evil" version of each sorta speak. Only the rogue path actions risk lowering your reputation (steal, provoke, allure and scrutinize). The terminology helps to confuse this distinction because with the exception of stealing and to a lesser extent provoke the words used don't have an obviously negative connotation. They probably should have replaced provoke, allure and scrutinize with words like assault (or maybe sick since their animals), seduce and interrogate respectively to make it more obvious that these are intended to be viewed as ignoble acts.
Okay, so this actually convinced me to get it. Since the early 2000s not many games actually tried to capture the grandeur of the JRPGs past (maybe, just maybe I am Setsuna). But a recommendation form someone who's played so many of the classics I guess I can really trust your opinion. :-)
I got my 1st experience x100 on the 1st arena boss on Olberics ch.2. Everyone went from lvl 30 to lvl 41-42! 25,000 exp +2,500 break bonus. It was a sweet and very lucky moment.
I still don't understand the combat in this game. Is it sort of real time action based somewhat like Child of Light or just a selection screen were you use "strategy".
It's turn based. You break enemy defenses to do maximum damage. V.s if you dont you'll do about half damage. How you break their defenses is by attacking with what they're weak to. So if they have a 2 defense you have to attack them twice with something they're weak to.
I freaking loved Cyrus too oml. He made me facepalm so hard sometimes because of how adorably oblivious he was xDDD But I also loved Therion because hes the emo boyfriend and hes adorable even if he tries to be edgy ♥
I know I’m late to this, but I feel like Cyrus is probably my favorite character. He hits hard with the Axe and can concoct for quick breaks. The Golden Axe really helps too. After unlocking all of the characters Chapter 1 stories, I am going to main Therion (Cleric), Cyrus (Merchant), Alfyn (Dancer), and H’annit (Warrior)
I still have so much of Octopath to play through. My favourite character is Alfyn and I feel like he and Ophilia got the best musical themes, although the entire soundtrack is astounding.
I didn't like Alfyn at first until I *really* started using him and once I did his chapter 2. He's a precious cinnamon bun who must be protected! Although his theme is probably one of my least favorites. But as you said, the music all around is wonderful!
This was a great thought-out and well-written review. You actually made me want to buy the game. Keep up the good work looking forward to that Sonic mania review.
I cannot wait for your Suikoden III review. Are you turned off to finishing the Breathe of Fire series? I was really looking forward to III and IV those were the real gems.
OH HELL NO. Im gonna play all of Suikoden AND Breath of Fire (minus the 5th entry of BOF)! I hear this is where BOF finally gets good. If you follow me on social media I did a poll on Suikoden 3 v.s BoF 3 ...Bof won FB. S3 won on Twitter and tied on Instagram. Still debating which one will be the last jrpg review of 2018.
When I was in Japan last year I went nuts! They had a pin vending matchine that I didn't stop turning till I had all 8 characters. Bought every piece of merch I could find including the 4CD soundtrack! I can't get enough of the music. Therion is my starting character and favourite - I did not expect to love Tressa and Alfyn so much though. Cyrus is great too though I didn't like his job class till I also made him a Dancer for SP recovery an buffs. It's an undoubtedly influential jrpg that took risks that paid off.
Got this game, still haven't played it, yet I hear praises and covers of the game's OST. Procrastination is taking a hold of me. That, and my PS4 has been getting great games this year.
God, I wish I had a Switch! I wanna play this so bad! The OST and your preview for it hooked me! My favorite track - so far - has to be The One They Call Witch. Maybe when I play the game I’ll have a better feel for the music and the story itself.
I love the review. I personally couldn’t get into the game after trying both demos but not every game is for everyone. I hope with the success of this and DQXI, Squeenix notices that people want more turn-based RPGs and RPGs in general.
That's a bummer to hear but can't please everyone. And at least you gave it a fair go. And I do agree, turn base is loved by gamers everywhere and someone in my comments section earlier mentioned that they think a bunch of Final Fantasy titles coming to the Switch was a knee jerk reaction to how well Octo did. Like " Oh crap, people really do like this stuff?! " Thanks for watching!
Honestly loved this review! One thing to note though is that the level recommendation system will vary a bit depending on your equipment; in many cases, having good equipment/items on you is more important than your party's overall level when going into battle. If you don't prepare properly beforehand, a boss fight can seem ridiculously difficult, even if you're overleveled. I've had cases where certain bosses earlier on in the game were really difficult to fight until I equipped certain weapons/accessories to my party members, after which they became pretty manageable. The problem is that the game doesn't really tell you that this is the case, meaning that you may struggle until you begin upgrading your gear. (Also another fun little tidbit for anyone reading/is new to the game, but the pre-battle themes for each of the characters are designed to blend into each of the boss battle themes! There are channels on RUclips that have spliced together the pre-battle themes with the boss themes like how it's done in the game, and I highly recommend them (Lady Pelvic somewhat mentioned it, but I thought I'd add on :D))
I'm not really interested in JRPGs any more, but you sold me on this one. Maybe I can finally recapture the feelings I had as a kid with Final Fantasies 1, 5 & 6...
favorite character: Cyrus favorite character theme: Alfyn, The Apothecary loved Octopath Traveler spolier: For those who complained about about the stories being disjointed and not being a grandiose adventure to save the world. The True final section of the game brilliantly ties all of the plot threads together and has you doing battle with an immortal deity in order to save the world. I would recommenced to put in the work for that ending because it's worth it.
I actually wish I saved before beating the final final boss. Because by now, all of the enemies are KINDA easy for me(level 90 characters) and there’s not really much of a challenge. So I’m planning on playing the game all over again.
So it took me long enough, but I'm finally playing through this gem, as it is on xbox game pass. As someone who loves old school jrpgs, I feel like this game was made for me. Great soundtrack, fun gameplay, likeable characters. Wonderful game! Better late than never!
Don't have a switch can't play the game but nice review as usual from what I've seen in walkthrough's Therion is my favorite character. Now I'm just going to sit here and wait for that Dragonquest XI review. I'm loving that game.
I loved tressa. Free money and a great attitude. My only problem with this game was it felt repetitive- like talk ,use skill, dungeon, boss, next traveler. The game still held my attention for 80hours so it was solid 😀
I just beat the game! Thought it was a great homage to old school games, just wish they would they would’ve had more character interaction in the form of banter that had 3 characters. Those were some of my favorite moments
I would have enjoyed more character interaction as well. But I think to much would have cut into the 'persona' stories this game was trying to tell. Still I hope they change that in the much needed sequel. :)
To answer your questions: Cyrus was my favourite. Best theme? Musically I'm an idiot so I have no idea. I really like the second battle music when you start exploring the areas of chapter 2 though. I loved the game and its smaller scope narrative, only fault I could find with it was story predictability and low difficulty.
YES!! TEAM CYRUS. I think the story was predictable BUT...I think each story segment was so fitting for each character. Like (SPOILERS) Alyfn's chapter 2, realizing not every doctor is out there to do good. Or every man deserves to be healed. It was such a perfect lesson for Alyfn. AND LOW DIFFICULTY?! REALLY?! I found optional stuff to be insanely hard! I didn't even beat the TRUE final boss cause I gotta grind some more.
@@PelvicGaming Yeah some stories didn't suffer from the predictability at all and I think they were all overall still good! Primrose's for example was great, but because each story had such a small cast you could easily predict the identity of the final crow. I meant difficulty of the main quests, sorry. Post-game stuff was indeed better for that.
Currently playing through, have only beaten half of the second chapters. My favourite character is absolutely Cyrus. I chose him as my main because I love mage-type characters (who would've guessed from my avatar) and because he seemed like a stand up guy. His gameplay is also awesome, I love breaking all the enemies, buffing his magic and then dropping a max-level spell and annihilating everything. My favourite songs are definitely the second battle and boss themes, but pretty much the entire soundtrack is great. I hope what you say about the difficulty is true, because I'm a sucker for hard games, especially jRPGs. I always keep Evasive Maneuvers equipped and rotate my party so I don't overlevel. I started the second chapters with Cyrus in the low twenties and everyone else at about 15. Immediately learned Hale and Hearty with everyone because 500 extra HP is insane, and so far I haven't had any trouble. I've heard that the difficulty really starts to pick up in the third chapters, and the optional bosses look like they're no pushovers, so I'm excited. Oh, and this is the first video of yours I've seen and I've already dropped a sub. Love me some jRPGs and you seem to be one of the few reviewers who are actually skilled at the games they cover.
I don't have a Switch so sadly I won't get to play this for awhile, but once I get it I'm excited, your review really solidified that! And Suikoden III!!! Yay!!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Oh man, this is a must buy once you get your hands on a Switch! Yes, it's either that..or now people are saying Breath of Fire 3. Ughhh!! @.@ I wanna play them all!
Been waiting for this review! I'm glad to see you enjoyed this game, especially when it comes down to the stories. I keep reading people hating the stories because they're boring but I think each one is unique, even if they start off slow. Awesome review!
Love alfyin!!! My Favorite character! I haven't finished the game yet . I stopped before everyone's final boss cause I didn't want the stories to end . I just love this game I played it non stop when it came out ! I should probably go back and finish their stories. Great review btw.
I'm always happy to hear people praise this game! I really enjoyed it a ton! My favorite characters are Alfyn, who was my main (such a sweetheart!), and Therion, whom I didn't like at first, but grew to love as his story went on. I love the music SO MUCH! I can't pick a favorite character theme, but I really like Therion's, (so much loneliness! it makes me so emotional) and Olberic's (it really captures the idea of a battle-hardened warrior). I'm really glad to hear someone defend the small-scale, personal stories, which I really enjoyed. I also loved how much life they put into the NPCs, even the ones who didn't really matter to the main characters' stories. In this game, everyone has their own story, and that really touches me for some reason. Also the battle system is wicked good. I only wish we could've seen the characters interact with each other more; the travel banters were one of my favorite aspects of the game.
I also really enjoyed it. It made me a little sad people harping on the lack of Grand Story. I thought the personal stories were very refreshing. And I agree with you on the character banter more would have been nice. :-) thanks for watching.
I just started this game and am loving it so far, and the soundtrack is 👌. The game reminds me a lot of Bravely Default. I didn't realize it would also have job combos tho, I loved that feature in BD.
I love this game! It’s fantastic. Characters, Villains, World, Battles, Music. Jobs. Everything. & Yes over all the stories are Tide together. 🥳 my favourite character would be Therion 🤓🖤 1 of my top 5 RPG’s of all Time. Up there with Final Fantasy VI & Chrono Trigger.
The lack of an overarching story and cohesive character interactions killed this game for me. I still LOVED the gameplay, music, and set pieces though.
Awesome video and fantastic review! This such a beautiful game and the music is definitely fantastic! I really enjoyed Olberic's story best to be honest. I really hope we get more of these kind of RPG's too. Are you going to review Dragon Quest 11 at some point in the future? Really enjoying that game at the moment! :)
Fantastic review as always, I think you wer probably more into the game than I was, I found the game to be a bit of a drag in the final chapters, as i think the gameplay looop started to get a bit stale, but I enjoyed this game as well.
if you enjoyed this game i strongly reccomend you to play saga frontier 1, it was realised for play station 1 and u are totaly rigth cyrus theme song is the best
My biggest issue with this game was that the party members barely interact with each other. There's the optional tavern convos but they're so infrequent. The group doesn't really feel like a party but more like 8 joes who happen to be going to the same place.
Ah....That warbringer fight, which was the last optional class boss I fought in my save. The fight that I tried so hard to beat legit like I did the other 3 fights, only to say "Ef this" and cheese it.
@@PelvicGaming It is super easy if you use one specific tactic to kill it (Tressa + Runelord), but I was trying really hard not use it. After getting close to 10 loses though (mainly because I was stubborn and always close to winning), I just wanted to get it over with. -__-;;;
I'm late on this. Currently playing this on Xbox Game Pass. I like your review definitely. My only complaint with this game is actually...the story. I love JRPGs for story and colorful characters, but I found every individual story boring. I rolled my eyes every time I had to sit through a character intro, and the disconnected stories made me feel like I was just playing with a character with a move list. But otherwise, solid game.
This looks fuckin cool. I need to get on it with modern gaming. I think the most recent game I've played is Hyper Light Drifter (highly recommend) other than that I'm just sifting through older games I never played that I always wanted to.
Guess I should finish this game some time.
I THINK YOU SHOULD.
As always I'd love to know your thoughts!
I realize I am kind of randomly asking but does anybody know of a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Ignacio Bentley Flixportal :P
@Eden Ronald Thanks, I signed up and it seems to work =) Appreciate it !
@Ignacio Bentley Glad I could help :)
I think all the final fantasy ports coming to switch was a knee jerk reaction to octopath's success
Good call. I agree.
I wish FFV and VI remakes had this kind of graphics
I would lose it
I need to play this game! I really like how you talk about the music when you review and let us hear a few songs for each game.
Wish you mentioned the battle with Galdera... THAT IS AN IMPOSSIBLE BATTLE IF YOU MAKE ONE MISTAKE

I think that Square Enix should stop being surprised by old style JRPGs from them that are properly advertised actually selling really well.
Lol fair.
I just wanna say i love ur channel!

Glad to enlighten you! I'm glad battles keep you on your toes but it does make it a bit frustrating to grind. Because it's anything but mindless.
Love the review, I always recommend starting with Therion for his steal ability and being the only one who can open certain chests.
I literally saw this video five minutes after I beat the game...good timing Lady!
I just beat the game recently too. Took me two months and 115 hours 🤭
Wow that snow land music. Holy crap its beautiful 😍

Ooh, the music! The track "Determination" playing during Primrose's final boss fight blew me away. Excuse me, I'll be listening to that song for the next hour at least :-)
YESSS! All the tracks are excellent!
Holy hell visually speaking, this game is a sheer spectacle of beauty. Being a big fan of 16bit rpgs, i absolutely got to play this.
Glad to see a reviewer finally mention the large boss sprites as a callback to final fantasy.
Oh yes! I was a pleasant love letter!!

Favorite character Tressa, she was always so optimistic, naieve, and innocent. She wasn't my fave in combat. That would be Cyrus, he is a beast.
Don't have a switch can't play the game but nice review as usual from what I've seen in walkthrough's Therion is my favorite character.
Now I'm just going to sit here and wait for that Dragonquest XI review. I'm loving that game.
Therion is one of my babies.
I loved tressa. Free money and a great attitude. My only problem with this game was it felt repetitive- like talk ,use skill, dungeon, boss, next traveler. The game still held my attention for 80hours so it was solid 😀
I agree.. but it held my attention for 110 + hours so... it couldn't have bothered me that much!
Primrose has the best antagonist in the game, psychotic and charming.
I still need to pick this up. I'll be back after I beat it.
Enjoy!
Have you had the chance to play the Octo Expansion DLC?
Nope
That is for this game right?
I just beat the game! Thought it was a great homage to old school games, just wish they would they would’ve had more character interaction in the form of banter that had 3 characters. Those were some of my favorite moments
I would have enjoyed more character interaction as well. But I think to much would have cut into the 'persona' stories this game was trying to tell. Still I hope they change that in the much needed sequel. :)
omg your steal sequence has me dyingggggg (flashback to my skyrim days)
Hehe I did the saaaaaammme thing in that game.
Suikoden III? Nice. There is a lot there. But it is a nice game and that intro music is hauntingly good
I GOT THAT INTRO MUSIC ON REPEAT BBY
I am still playing this game right now. I think it is the best game I have played in awhile. My favorite character so far is Haanit
Love me some jRPGs and you seem to be one of the few reviewers who are actually skilled at the games they cover.
i havent played a fullon rpg in awhile this looks really fun. Thank you for reviewing!
Great review!
I admit to not really playing a Breath of Fire game (I think IV) but I'd respect and watch either!
You gotta finish! And good luck with the TRUE final boss! I havent even beaten him yet!
Glad you're enjoying and thank you for watching!
I bought this game almost entirely for the soundtrack
We ❤️ you Lady Pelvic!
Xoxo
I just started this game and am loving it so far, and the soundtrack is 👌. The game reminds me a lot of Bravely Default. I didn't realize it would also have job combos tho, I loved that feature in BD.
Primrose had the darkest story. Olberic was OP AF, Therion was so edgy
5:20 they can only partiewipe you because you are using the wrong strategie :D Last time i fought Winnehild i didnt even took a hit.
That's fine but it's still wildly unfair if your 20 levels above a boss.
@@PelvicGaming true :)
Whenever I play this game it reminds me of 2 square games: live a live & treasure of the Rudra
The lack of an overarching story and cohesive character interactions killed this game for me. I still LOVED the gameplay, music, and set pieces though.
Emeka Ekwulugo both things are there you just were not patient enough
@@FelixS. Maybe so, but 35 hours in was enough to realize it wasn't my cup of tea story wise. Maybe I'll revisit it at another time
Emeka Ekwulugo Hey I Hope you will I think it is a really rewarding experience and one of my favorite JRpgs of this generation :)
Cyrus is my fav character, and his theme is my fav. Octopath is an amazing game. My fav Switch game so far.
It's one of my favorites! I'm a huge fan of Mario Odyssey! But this JRPG was killing it.
Bae gamer is back with a nice ass review this is going to be the first game I get for switch
Yaaaaas! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the review. This has been a long time coming. Out of sheer curiosity, might you be reviewing Spider-man in the (hopefully) near future?
Sadly no. u.u
The game looks great but it's didn't appeal to my jrpg tastes.
Pelvic Gaming Ah, no worries. Thanks.
Truly another fine review.
Fantastic review as always, I think you wer probably more into the game than I was, I found the game to be a bit of a drag in the final chapters, as i think the gameplay looop started to get a bit stale, but I enjoyed this game as well.
wow this channel is really good!!
Thanks!!
I don't know but more interactions between characters would be cool
The OST is on point🔥🔥🔥
Yes sirrrr
if you enjoyed this game i strongly reccomend you to play saga frontier 1, it was realised for play station 1
and u are totaly rigth cyrus theme song is the best
My biggest issue with this game was that the party members barely interact with each other. There's the optional tavern convos but they're so infrequent. The group doesn't really feel like a party but more like 8 joes who happen to be going to the same place.
I agree
Ah....That warbringer fight, which was the last optional class boss I fought in my save. The fight that I tried so hard to beat legit like I did the other 3 fights, only to say "Ef this" and cheese it.
Lol it is one of the hardest boss fights in the game imo. After the GREAT dire wolf and the true boss...which I have still yet to beat.
@@PelvicGaming It is super easy if you use one specific tactic to kill it (Tressa + Runelord), but I was trying really hard not use it. After getting close to 10 loses though (mainly because I was stubborn and always close to winning), I just wanted to get it over with. -__-;;;
hello! i fond you on twitter and i rly like your channel. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy what ya see~
Octopath Traveler is a game I am definitely getting at some point.
You simply must!
Now onto Live-A-Live. I feel like most Octopath Traveler fans would love that if they only knew it existed.
I like when RPGs force you to think for battles, but I hate how you can't just hold down X(or A) while doing something else.
Just subscribed!!! Hey girl
HAY GURL HAAY
This looks fuckin cool. I need to get on it with modern gaming. I think the most recent game I've played is Hyper Light Drifter (highly recommend) other than that I'm just sifting through older games I never played that I always wanted to.
