I've watched many different videos about media shelves but this design is by far the optimal for the price. Only thing I did differently was to use the 1"x2"x8ft intact instead of cutting it up, it made the horizontal shelf much more stable.
This project saved me a lot of time and money. I covered the wood with contact paper before putting it together. I also added an offset 1x2 onto the back of each space to keep the contents in place. I did not attach it to the wall (too hard without cutting the legs by the baseboards) so I leaned it against the wall like a ladder. It doesn't feel like it will fall over and is just for storage. It looks great and already holds over 350 bluerays. Thank you for posting.
Now that's how to make a DIY video! Precise and to the point with fantastic and clever ideas on how to make the shelves. My wife has been wanting me to make floating shelves for her for a long time and now I know how to. Thanks so much for posting this video. 1:28
I just want to thank you. I built my long dvd shelves using your video. It came out amazing. I painted it white to go with the wall color. I couldn’t be happier. Thank you so much 👍🏻
My husband (a former Home Depot employee) said it's definitely their job to cut the wood, however some of them aren't the brightest crayons in the box and might not cut it correctly. Thank you for showing your build this was really cool
I know I am late to the game but this is an interesting way to inexpensively build storage. To answer the question about the big box stores it is their policy to provide one free cut per board. You get an employee in a good mood they might do more for you though! Thanks for posting the video!
These shelves work great and this is definitely my most-watched RUclips video of all time. Thank you for sharing. PROTIP (from a Non-Pro) - Once you plan your shelves and determine your spacing between the horizontals, cut yourself 2 spacer blocks to that exact distance. As long as you get the bottom shelf level to start, then you won't even need to worry about measuring and leveling the rest of them. Just rest each new 1x2 on top of the spacer blocks, screw it in, rinse and repeat. To be safe, you might want to swap the blocks each time (move Block 1 from the left side to the right size and Block 2 from right to left). That way, if there are any fractional differences in length, it will balance out and you won't end up with shelves that become slightly more unlevel as you go from bottom to top. In the end, the spacer blocks will definitely save you some time.
This is awesome. Finally, someone who makes things with Hand power tools. This way we don't have to invest $100,000 in tools like those guys who mean well, but try to make the video look like DIY. Thank you for the video. 3:57
Thanks so much for upload Heath. I just built this in my office. I made a couple shelves a bit smaller for blu rays and then left very top shelf empty for my big box vhs. I truly appreciate your love of physical media. Now, if I could figure out some shelves like this for my massive laserdisc collection!
Heath I've built the same shelfing and added an additional 2x4 in the middle of my longer beams to add support and keep those 1x2's from bowing. Great video.
Great note! If I could do the longer shelves again, I would add that additional 2x4 like you did. The ones in this video are shorter (32 inches), and they’re pretty much perfect. I don’t think I would go much longer than that without adding that extra 2x4.
What a wonderful idea!! It's effective, doesn't look too tacky and it's a lot cheaper than buying those $400 sets made of particle board on Amazon. We collect old DVD's and VHS, and video games too! I think I'm gonna try this and paint mine red. Thanks guys!
Also guys, to answer your question, any Lowes, Home Depot, or any hardware store really are happy to cut wood for anyone. It is their job, but only up to a certain point. Larger simple cuts like what you guys got is perfectly reasonable, but they won't come build a house for you, haha.
That is so cool I've been wanting to put shelving up but because I nees so much it was going to cost too much but watching this has really helped me thank you guys
After lots of headaches, I finally built a shelf like this in my room with my brother's help. Seems to work pretty well! Protip: if you can't drill into the wall because you're renting or, in my case, because the wall is made of cinder blocks, get another set of 1x2s and put them on the back of the shelf, offset slightly, to form a "wall" for the shelf. I say this because when I tried doing this initially, the shelf couldn't lean flat against the wall due to the wood being slightly warped, so tapes and Blu-rays would fall right through the bottom.
Saw the link from another video and cool how u made shelfs so easier to move later if ever move to a new place and can carry the pieces around anytime. no more bulky book shelfs lol. cool to see how it all done in matter of mins and stocked to show how all looks and all.
Nice DIY. The instructions and video make it super easy to replicate, which I plan on doing sometime soon. I've seen this pattern before, but I like your presentation.
Who remembers those shelving that had INDIVIDUAL slots for each movie? Wasn't it fun to shift it all to accommodate the growing collection? I admire the effort in your custom build. I am a bit lazy however, and have been buying the shelving pre-made and with adjustable pegs to fit to suit varied sizes of boxsets for example.
Thanks for the video! We're planning to build our own shelves too for our vhs collection. My question is if you used drywall anchors for the brackets? Thank you!
Congrats on finally building thoes shelves! They look really easy to build but I can't get over the fact that they are empty inside. What a plot twist :D
Awesome video! Had always been curious about your shelves. I've been using Ikea Bennos and Gnedbys for years and love them but if I were to ever put shelves in another room I'd consider what you have done. And its always cool when you two do videos together.
What I didn't see was how you cut the bottom of the 2X4s to be flat against the wall but go all the way to the floor, making room for the molding at the bottom of the wall. I guess I'll just cut a rectangle out of the bottom end of the 2X4s that go against the wall. Thanks for the great idea. It's going to save me a lot of money.
My concern is how do you prevent DVDs/BDs from falling out of the back - do you have to keep all shelves pretty full? Example being a single or couple of DVDs on a row. If they fall over from their vertical position; since they were only resting vertically on a narrow ledge, if they fall to a horizontal position would they not fall backwards off the narrow ledge? And if there were not cases on the lower shelves they would fall all the way to the ground?
@@CerealAtMidnight So far so good. I was able to get 4 shelves up last night. Only 4 because I chose to do it by hand and not use my electric drill. I like elbow grease lol I will try and show you the project when finished 👍😎
Great! I did mine by hand too. I have a battery powered drill, but the torque sucks and it can’t handle the load. I end up just screwing and hammering it all in by hand. Thanks for the update!
Yes, it is their job. They have the industrial size wood cutter in the lumber section for that reason alone. They used to limit the cutting to ONE cut per piece, or an extra charge would apply. My local Home Depot and Lowe’s have done away with that practice and will now cut 2+ per board for free.
That's clever. I never realized the movies were held in that manner or even the bracket idea. I know what you mean about Home depot/lowes and the cutting I generally will cut them myself unless it's an expensive piece of wood or important cut and i always feel weird about asking. I'll have to get a shelf for my movies as they are all still in ottomans.
Each shelf has different dimensions according to the size of the wall and lots of DVDs are different sizes (Blu-rays, TV seasons, box sets), so there's no set answer for how many discs they can store. And I wouldn't try these without securing them to the wall, or the whole thing could tip over!
@@CerealAtMidnight hmm I’m trying to avoid any damage to the walls. I have about 4000 dvds. Some are big box sets . Thanks.. could you upload a video of the step by step construction? Thanks
Wow! I sold lot of DVDs on eBay this year. If I had watched this video sooner, I would have kept all of them. I still have 60% of my DVDs left. Will definitely make a similar shelf sometime next year to display my collections.
Yeah, I think a lot of people get rid of their DVD collections, because they really don't have a way to store them, and like me, just have them in a bunch of bins. I go to this local thrift shop in my area and they sell their DVDs for a dollar! Every month for 1 day they have a 50% off everything in the store and you can snag them for 50 cents! I have picked up a ton of really great movies this way everything from the SCI FI Classic Fahrenheit 451 to Casablanca, to The Quiet Man. I can't wait to try out this build, and get all my movies organized.
I personally don't like those big collectible edition packages like the Willy Wonka 40th Anniversary set, so I almost always stay away. I do wish that I had picked up the big collectible version of The Ten Commandments when it was cheap and easy to find, though, because it's the only way to get Cecil B. DeMille's original silent version of The Ten Commandments. I always thought they'd re-release it on its own, but they didn't.
I built my shelves very similar to these, but I attached a 1x6 board on top of the 2x4's and that is where I can display a few oddly-sized box sets that won't fit on a standard shelf.
If you build it. They will fill up! =P Great job guys. now all you have to do is fill up the empty space. ;) I really wish I could have my DVD;s and Blu rays displayed like this. my main shelves i have them two deep. is a pain when you want to watch a film or show and have to go behind them. But i have limited wall space.
I feel your pain. Until we decided that room was going to be dedicated to media, we had them stacked two-deep on our old shelves too. Impossible to find things.
hey, use 2x3's instead of 2x4's for wicked VHS (slimbox) and paperback storage. they are heavier than DVDs so i reccomend the shelves to not be over 2 foot wide. (mine are 4 feet, so they are prone to a little sagging) the hardest part by far (for me) was sanding the 1x2's down. those tiny boards are super rough (the 2x4's are bad enough) i wish you could make Lowe's SAND the things for you.
Cheap. I'm copying this from the description of that video: "For this project, we used 2x4 beams for our verticals and 1x2 beams for our horizontals. Each piece was cut to size. The shelves in this video cost a total of $21.37 including tax!"
I always look at the descriptions and for once I didn't when I should have. I'm sorry man. Thank you. I've been needing to do something about my collection. I have several hundred but not quite as many as you.
@@CerealAtMidnight I don't know how you did it for $21! Granted, I had almost double the number of 1x2's because I'm using some of mine for CD storage, but I spent a combined total of $250 for 2x4's, 1x2's, brackets, and screws. Even for that price though, it is giving me much more efficient storage than any off-the-shelf solution. Thank you for posting this.
This should work for cds too right? Like I’m thinking of doing an 8 x 8 foot unit half for DVDs and half for CDs. The CDs would be shorter in space so more shelves. So thinking maybe an extra support beam in the back as they will probably be heavier. Thoughts?
Thanks! It worked out wonderfully! However we found that we need more space for DVDs! So this weekend I’ll be making another smaller one. Thanks for sharing this awesome project!
What do you think about taking the DVDs out of their cases and putting them in plastic sleeves or binders? Is it sacrilege or genius space saver option? I have our collection in plastic tubs for now. Was thinking of putting all our DVD/Blu-Ray discs in binders and putting the cases in our garage but it pulls on my heart to do that.
I think whatever works for you and makes you happy is what you should do. However, there does seem to be some evidence that those plastic binders promote bit rot. Some people swear against this, but the one consistent factor in people with large collections that have developed pin holes in the playing surface is that a lot of those collectors were using CD binders to store their discs.
Cereal At Midnight Yeah that’s what I thought. I almost went through with the binder/case idea. Glad I didn’t. I will just make room for them in their original packaging. I love your collection.
Will the 1x2s cause damage to the Blu-ray slip overs and digipacks or digiboxes. I’m thinking of Arrow LEs and such. Would the one point of contact cause indentations on the cases?
Ours are drywall. We’ve used a variety of different screws over the years for different shelves. I would think it depends on your own walls and preferences. The real key is three brackets per vertical upright, spaced at top, middle, and bottom. We screw directly into the drywall with common screws (again, different diameters and lengths over the years) and those beams are super secure. The weight of the media distributes the weight downward, not outward.
fantastic video as always. love the channel. do the screws for the L shaped bracket have to go into the studs of the wall or ok to just go in the wall? Also what kind of scres are you using for the L shaped bracket and then to hold to wood together? Thanks so much
I couldn’t tell you specific screw sizes (I use whatever I have) but they are wood screws. In some places, we have them anchored into the wall, but in others, they’re just screwed into the plaster. The good thing about these shelves is that they bear their weight straight down and evenly, so there’s no real pull forward. The only way they could be pulled out of the wall is if you pulled directly on the top of the 2x4s. As for the horizontals, we used to screw those in too, but this time we just nailed them in and it seems to work better that way. Faster and easier.
@@CerealAtMidnight tks so much, bought new house. Have over 560 horror movies on blu ray and about 1500 horror on DVD, your shelves are perfect. tks again and love the channel
I used this DIY build for my Man Cave that I renovated completely last year but sadly had to get rid of around 10,000 movies but the room looks great in my opinion. I'm housing two walls 7.8' x 18'. full of movies but still have 2 of my 6' x 3' black bookshelves full of movies as well. The down side of having the movies this way is it will be hard to fit new movies that come out in the future. I'm also storing around a thousand or so movies in closets because of that reason.
That's amazing; your original collection must include every movie ever put on DVD/Blue ray!! I thought I had a bit of a collecting obsession with about 300 DVDs/BRs, but I'm not remotely in your league 😂 🎬
@@randybradley4151 how is that even possible? The cheapest I have ever come across a movie (and I am talking years old!) is $5 a pop @ 500,000 discs that is $2.5 million....and that is if you are able to buy them all when they are old and $5 a piece????
@@hskrgrad We have a thrift store that sells physical media discs for $1CAD and have several 50% off sales meaning any format for 50 cents. It doesn't matter if it's a box set, DVD, blu-ray, 3D blu-ray or even 4K blu-rays. My friend is a multi-millionaire and used to get movies when they first came out but has now smartened up and has started looking for deals.
I really need to get my DVDs in order, so of course I found this excellent video which I will use as a reference. I am a woodworker, so if I may, I can offer a suggestion to these great shelves. What you can to to make the 1 x 2s stronger is glue two of them back to back (I would recommend Titebond 3 for a really strong hold). You will need a bunch of (6" preferably) F style clamps to hold them together overnight for a really strong bond. Make sure they don't move during the glue up. You could even do that with the shelf that has the split on it and use that one on the back side. Also you could always cut them so they fit inside the 2 x 4 vertical strips and attach them with small L brackets.
This video is just what I needed. No joke, every time I buy dvds part of my mind is thinking only about where to put them.
Glad we could help!
Pre drilling your holes will help with the wood cracking. Just dropping knowledge bombs :)
More like eliminate cracks so long as you don't drill into a knot.

I built my shelves very similar to these, but I attached a 1x6 board on top of the 2x4's and that is where I can display a few oddly-sized box sets that won't fit on a standard shelf.
This is fabulous! Thanks for sharing - great design! :)
This is so freakin cool!!! I got to try it when i get a place or when i redo my parents basement! 1:42
If you build it. They will fill up! =P Great job guys. now all you have to do is fill up the empty space. ;)
I really wish I could have my DVD;s and Blu rays displayed like this. my main shelves i have them two deep. is a pain when you want to watch a film or show and have to go behind them. But i have limited wall space.
I feel your pain. Until we decided that room was going to be dedicated to media, we had them stacked two-deep on our old shelves too. Impossible to find things.
nice shelves for the blu rays and dvds
Another great video. Thanks guys.
hey, use 2x3's instead of 2x4's for wicked VHS (slimbox) and paperback storage. they are heavier than DVDs so i reccomend the shelves to not be over 2 foot wide. (mine are 4 feet, so they are prone to a little sagging)
the hardest part by far (for me) was sanding the 1x2's down. those tiny boards are super rough (the 2x4's are bad enough) i wish you could make Lowe's SAND the things for you.
Came to ask about vhs. Definitely running the 2x3.
Also sanding sucks.
Very cool. Looks great!
Were the supplies cheap or did they start to get expensive?
Cheap. I'm copying this from the description of that video:
"For this project, we used 2x4 beams for our verticals and 1x2 beams for our horizontals.
Great job , I have a new project to do . Thanks to both of you . God Bless...
So simple 🤙 should've painted them 👌
This should work for cds too right? Like I’m thinking of doing an 8 x 8 foot unit half for DVDs and half for CDs. The CDs would be shorter in space so more shelves. So thinking maybe an extra support beam in the back as they will probably be heavier. Thoughts?
Yep, that sounds like a good plan!
Thanks! It worked out wonderfully! However we found that we need more space for DVDs! So this weekend I’ll be making another smaller one. Thanks for sharing this awesome project!
Hmm, you might need to create one of those cool library slide ladders for Bree. Some Beauty and beastly impromptu song could be rein-acted
I love that idea. LOL.
Does this size shelving work well w/ vhs too? Or would they fall through?
I think they'd probably be too heavy, but maybe it you used a really sturdy wood for the horizontals.
i like this concept, simple simon on this
Like your collection so many movies to watch
Looks great, thanks for the tips.
Will the 1x2s cause damage to the Blu-ray slip overs and digipacks or digiboxes. I’m thinking of Arrow LEs and such. Would the one point of contact cause indentations on the cases?
I can only speak for myself and my own experience, but I have had no issues with damage to cases.
Pre-drilling holes into the 1x2 should help prevent some the wood splitting.
This is one of those jobs where it's really important to get the holes drilled square. Use a jig, if you don't have a drill press. 2:41
Cool project! Has anyone told you that you resemble Zach Galifianakis?
Is this in to solid brick or dry wall and can I get measurements of screws and fittings please
@@CerealAtMidnight Thanks
It is in to solid wood for me
Thanks for sharing. :)
The shelfs turned out great. Do the small shelfs damage the bottoms of vhs sleeve?
I haven't put any VHS tapes on these shelves, but I notice no damage on our DVDs.
Yall geniuses.
Looks good
fantastic video as always. love the channel. do the screws for the L shaped bracket have to go into the studs of the wall or ok to just go in the wall?
I forgot to put that I used to own 16 6' x 3' shelves and they were front and back full of movies.
That's amazing; your original collection must include every movie ever put on DVD/Blue ray!! I thought I had a bit of a collecting obsession with about 300 DVDs/BRs, but I'm not remotely in your league 😂 🎬
@@annedwyer797 Not even close. My friend has that sort of collection with around 150,000 blu-rays and about 350,000 DVDs.
Does Lowes cut the groove into the bottom of the 2x4 for you, too? I don’t have the tools either.
They might if you ask. Probably depends on the employee. I just sawed them myself win a cheap handsaw.
Also you could always cut them so they fit inside the 2 x 4 vertical strips and attach them with small L brackets.
luke skywalker knows how to build shelves kick ass!!!
