- Dharavi, in the heart of Mumbai, is Asia's largest slum. It is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Dharavi is home to close to 58,000 families and around 12,000 commercial establishments.
Over the course of 18 years, successive governments in Maharashtra have talked about revamping Dharavi. On October 18, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Maharashtra’s deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis signed a ‘definitive agreement’ for this purpose.
Under this, over 47.5 acres of Railway land in Dadar, in central Mumbai, has been handed over for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.
How many in Mumbai live in slums?
As per the Slum Rehabilitation Authority scheme, 48.35% of Mumbai’s population live in slums. Out of Mumbai’s total area, about 24% is occupied by slums. According to a survey, there are just under 50,000 slum dwellers and close to 10,000 renewal tenements in chawls in Dharavi. Out of more than 600 acres of Dharavi, the project would cover roughly 240 hectares.
What does the project entail?
The Slum Rehabilitation Authority and the lead bidder will form a special purpose vehicle. A special purpose vehicle is an entity formed for a specific purpose of infrastructure and rehabilitation. It will work alongside the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority to execute Phase 1 of the project. This includes redevelopment of specific areas comprising slum and non-slum sections, buildings and chawls.

Solution for Dharavi and other slum areas is to create high rise apartment complex and than settle people to those complex and vacate more land after settling them to the first apartment complex to start more development projects like high rise apartment complexes, business centers and public parks. Mumbai needs to be develop like New York as it has the potential to overtake both London and New York in development

Dharavi is the sign that though we are living in a single globe but there are two worlds in it , one side affording everything ( atleast basic needs ) and second are the vulnerables . We have recently witnessed massive floods in different parts of country like the IT capital was sinked there are places in maharastra where people had to struggle to stay at their home . If the rich and middle class population are suffering this than we can expect the extent of pain that a person in slum area have to go through on a daily basis .
Slums are everywhere in the country but Dharavi is Asia's largest. Well their count is 48 Percent but the area they occupied is mere 24 percent of Mumbai .
Govt always mulls to give a facelift to the vulnerable area but this has always been on paper only and surprisingly, with the passage of time the cost of rejuvenating this area is also increasing ( the cost has increased by seven times since the project was taken into account for the first time ie from Rs 4000 crore in 2004 to Rs 28000 crore today) .
If we delay more than this cost would have been mounting and reach at a level of no choice as it is. Therefore its times demand to look into the issue . If we spend 24 billion on statue of unity then why not 28000 crores to revive this area .
Vallavbhai Patel wanted to unite us and this is a big step to bring equality among people. India is a country of unity in diversity and we are proud of it . Govt must work on not only in Dharavi but must uplift every slums in the country so that we can proudly assert that our country is a true developing nation.

well actually many people lives in slums in Mumbai by choice. many have gotten their SRA homes but they rent it that one and goes again to slums. many even have private flats but they gives that on rent and lives in slums comfortably

This is not a reason to not do redevelopment. Even if 10 out of a 1000 people does this, it's still a win for the society.

Dharavi is a goldmine which every crook is now eying on. It should be regularised and given back to the people who are staying there.

these are prime built area now if you count all families and some more all outer mira roads bhyandars navi mumbai areas types already built housing units societies can be bought and all of these families rehabilitated you get prime area with you to redevelop and give all of slums dwellers good commute and good clean units along with area marked for their so called bussiness's or small work they do.

What does handover of 47.5 acres of prime Mumbai land mean? That the Adanis now own it? We’re competitive bids invited? Or is it a sham bidding process where Adani has inside information, as was the case with all the airports handed over to him - and he had zero prior experience . Or is it the Modi model of handing over the entire country to his chum?
But one more thing should be done is reeducation scheme people living slum , to change their mindset on how to live and also to have population control bcoz poor people tend to make more babies bcoz of mindset they will serve them but they bear load of underdeveloped and undernourishment and moreover financial dependency for 15-16 yrs of life. Keep them in acute generational proverty
