Steve Berry (Yes, that guy again, sorry) tests what was once the cheapest new car in the U.K Taken from a early 1998 episode of the old format Top Gear
20 years later and a certain Martin Mulholland went through a lot of trouble to restore one. Collectable? Maybe, but certainly rare and interesting. 3 cylinders and a carburettor - what's not to like?
Well, the Perodua Kancil (or Nippa for UK Market) is basically a rebadged version of an old Daihatsu Mira. So parts will be cheaper buy and it's easy to modify the car. If you do it right, it's got a nice inline 3 sound. Small car like this can be competitive in racing or rally in its class.
@@pug2052 Of course that one-off superbike engine (the current one called Mean Mower V2 has an engine from CBR1000RR) powered Honda lawnmower is "very competitive" in its class because it doesn't have its own competition in its class (duh 🙄). Besides, that lawnmower was built as a marketing stunt. Good attempt at making a "joke" but not enough to make me laugh mate.
I had a "sport"... What was sporty about it???.. well, for a start it had a sticker fitted at the factory on the c-pillar that said "sport" and came as standard with (10"?) Three spoke alloys. ....... It was the most fun I ever had on four wheels (around town)... I had a GT-4 for a daily driver at the time (the Nippa was actually my Mrs first car given to us as a hand me down) and if I wanted to hoon around I picked the Nippa over the GT-4 because I could do everything in the Nippa at sub 30mph that I could do in the GT-4 at 130... .... Also ... Full throttle starts by side stepping the clutch was hilarious.... nothing could catch me to 10mph..... I used to cock a wheel at almost every corner and never used the brakes except to hold it on a hill.... And do you know what..... I never saw one before and I have never seen one since... I genuinely have seen more McLaren F1's on the road.... I kinda wish I didn't abuse it everyday of its hard short life... RIP Nippa.... 🤣.
It wasn't, Chris. The factory I worked in, used to export 75% of our production to Europe (mainly France). As the pound strengthened, our prices in euros increased, and we lost orders. Our product was top quality, but became too expensive to sell enough, so the factory closed a couple of years later, 30 jobs lost.
This car has an ariel because he says in plain English that the EX version (which I’m assuming he’s driving) does come with a radio. Pay attention you mooks.
oh american calls it perodua nippa malaysian calls it perodua kancil although it a v1 with a 1.0 engine lol and not safe also passenger back no seatbelts in malaysia
No radio, no ariel? The car he is driving has one on the front at the side, and presumably that means there is a radio. Most of these so called reviews are the same - inaccurate, uninformative, purile commentary and bearly undertandable due to the presenter's inability to speak proper English.
2018 now. I'm getting my 2004 Kancil and it comes with EFI.
Well its been 20 years and there still not collectable...

Well, in Malaysia where it's known as the Kancil. It's still very popular for peole to modify and customise.
They're fuel injected.
I just sold one for 150..20 left in country n still..noone wanted it😂😂😂
Its been 25 years.
and after 27 year this car has became a legend and historic
Yooo never thought I'd see Perodua Kancil become a collectable
20 years time, strangely collectible in Malaysia and in Australia! (Mighty Car Mods will have you know)
Everyone moaning about how he said collectible, notice he said “could be collectible” not “will be collectible”
Perodua Kancil! Originally based on an old Daihatsu Mira.
Malaysia represent!
Marc Chan technically a rebadged Japanese car
Its already 20 years and its basically a coffin on the road with today's car sizes.
One SUV or a truck and your dead
in Malaysia it’s still on the road
@@CrepeerE45 yeah
Top gear!! Let's go! Perodua nippa and kancil never dies
I remember watching this, i was 17, i thought, "cool first car" oh how i was wrong. Brings back memories
Thank you for uploading this in high quality ! Do you have other footage of Perodua and Proton cars by any chance ? Liked and subscribed.
Aero7SVR *high quality*

@@hashrulsubzero it wasn't intended as a joke so its just as well then
I think perodua nippa (in malaysia is kancil) is more stable than Reliant Robin despite both of them are small car
Somebody should play Running In The 90s loud through the radio.
2:38 True! 👍
This only really had nostalgic value to me, noticing the changes to Manchester City Centre. The review itself was pants.

Just swap out parts with Mira l2s trxx JDM. That's what real sport version is.
Strong pound.....I bet that was nice

The Euro wasn't around in the late 90s.

still better than lamboghini
Yeah
2:04 song?
Twenty years later and... It's not a collectable.
2:25 no aerials? Take a close and careful look mate...
it's a very big aerial . I suspect is used for something in the filming of the gig.
He probably had a more specced out version. Thats usually the case with review models.
Yeah don’t say there is no aerial and then show us a goddamn aerial. He almost sounded like he liked the car...I hope he is still driving one.
still... better than the morris marina...
In Indonesia it sell by Daihatsu and named Daihatsu Ceria
I own one Made on 2004 and still love to Drive it
he loves the sound of his own voice
matt a It’s a car show, he’s supposed to talk, no?
Ex Daihatsu design.
Cheap and cheerful.

Dun play play, the best "SLK" in universe!
SLK=Small Little Kancil
Classic. Similar like the MINI or inspire by mr Bean car.
0:26 my exhaust also have smoke come out like this, not because of cold temperature, its burning engine oil 😢
👍
Perodua as a Second Malaysian National car
They go for scrap value now. Buy one for £150 run it for a while then scrap it. Break even.
you again?
I brought one for £50 about a year ago
Was it good?
luar negara kancil ialah perodua nippa oh baru tau
Sama macam Proton waja disana mereka panggil Proton Impian 😅😆
Perodua nippa? at malaysia we call Perodua Kancil
Yeah for some reason in the UK they were re-named. I'm buying one tomorrow for some reason!
It's got an Aerial
Fun Fact. The latest Perodua, the Bezza has a bigger boot than the latest Alfa Romeo Sedan
It also looks like a giant fookin box. Handles like one too.
+John L But the Bezza aren't meant for sporty driving, so I wouldn't really care much about that.
I am from malaysia... perodua nippa all the best.. my owner use car perodua nippa
kemaih cendoi huhu
The foreside of it looks a bit like the "Blista Compact" from "GTA IV".
Maybe?
Oh yeah, twins like a hyena and a german shepherd.
is just me, or anyone else thinks this guy go to pubs just to puck up a fight, for fun?

This is not a Nippa 850cc,it's a Kancil 660cc
Loh Dexstex - they were named Nippa when imported into the UK. They were also fitted with the larger engine.
oh american calls it perodua nippa malaysian calls it perodua kancil although it a v1 with a 1.0 engine lol and not safe also passenger back no seatbelts in malaysia
Sorry, it's not American since it's never been sold there. It's British.

They were optional. The base model doesn't have them. He must have some options on the test car.
