Perodua Nippa can't stand the rain. Why?

  • Our Perodua Nippa (Kancil in Malaysia, Daihatsu Mira before that) starts behaving like an old Mini, and starts spluttering in the rain. Watch as I diagnose the fault, quite incorrectly, then have another go. Can I cure the misfire?
    I'm pleased to report that all is now well. Was meant to be a more involved video, but I've so little time for stuff at the moment! In this one, we're way back in time to start with, when the Starlet was still being worked on, and it actually rained.

    I rented a 3 month old micra last year in ireland, in the rain it as good as can be expected of a new car, but as soon as it occasionally stopped raining the thing would run as rough as bumholes. Also had a terrible voltage drop on motorways my phone and satnav charger beeps when the voltage is low.

    WD40 sprayed inside the distributor cap. I had a '85 Isuzu PUP that did this. Also a GMC truck that had brakes that chattered when the humidity was high. No WD40 on the rotors, though.

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  6 лет назад +1

      This was the last truly simple car money could buy. In terms of equipment, the only luxury is a rear wiper. It cost £4995 new. A 2CV in 1990 cost around £3000. I think only the 1-litre Skoda Estelle, Yugo Zastava and Fiat 126 were that cheap.

      Still has plenty of electrickery, including hill start assist, electronic traction control, ABS, tyre pressure monitoring, airbags, emergency brake assist and power steering. The Nippa has none of these things. I'll grant you, the Dacia info does make mention of the heated rear window, which is always a sign of a car with little to shout about.

I am daily driving a "Daihatsu Ceria" just another rebadge of Perodua Kancil. it is already over 390k km in odometer (engine overhauled twice 😂) , fuel consumption roughly about 10-12 km per liter 🤣. Spraying water on HT leads can have undesirable effects if the system isn't right, bit like looking for a gas leak with a candle. Sounds slightly boggy when you throttle it, if it has a vacuum advance it would be worth a check to see if it's working OK. Timing strobe and a good suck on the hose will tell you.

It's the reason why it's cheap to run and fix and probably the cheapest car to buy back in 1998-2002. The Kelisa was a massive leap for Perodua.

    Aha a Labour man too, you Sir have gone up in my estimation :) Took us three days to get the clutch cable out of my Reliant cos I be too pie-ridden to get behind the clutch pedal at the clevis pin, wish I had recorded it as it was funny, I tried sitting between seats with me legs out the tailgate, tried from the passenger side and got stuck upside down with a handbrake in me ribs hehe Daughters skinny as a rake bloke got it in the end so now the fun is to get the new one in but I am thinking with the pedal floppier than a chav after 20 cans of special brew, might be easier... Whats your view on Seat Ibiza 1.4's? The slightly Spanished up Polo I have been told? My youngest has one and its very clean with the sporty leather interior too from the Audi TT engined big brother but having probs draining battery, have rebuilt the battery terminal pack but leave it a night after a charge and its deader than tank tops O.o

      'Older' fuel injected japanese cars often do, my dad had an 01 Primera 1.8 and 05 Avensis 1.8 (i know it isnt really old but still) both of which did it, my mother's old 98 and 03 Micras used to do it too, as does a friend's Suzuki Jimny. The list goes on really (interestingly my 2010 Yaris doesnt, so they must have 'fixed' this issue)

    • @HubNut

      Certainly must have been a thing for a time. My Honda S-MX and Lexus LS400 certainly did it. As did the Nissan Bluebird with its auto choke carburettor!

      My Dad had a Subaru Justy in the 90s. They had a semi-automatic choke which had to be cocked with a press on the throttle pedal when cold. It would then rev its nuts off until the choke closed. It was a cracking little car though - it'd go places in the snow that gave Land Rovers problems!
