Remember a base model Metro 1.1c was £7k back in 1991! I learnt to drive in a 1.3 GL Aeroback. 1990 on a "G" Very light and very easy to drive and also very quiet. When it first arrived the 1.3GL Saloon was only £5999. Very cheap considering we brits were ripped off on new cars back then. Most of Europe in general was 20% less for new cars than the UK. A Base model Lada Riva 1300 special with vinyl seats was £3k in 1989.
Had a mate who ran one as a mini cab - did over 400k miles in it then scrapped it. Nothing wrong with it he was just bored with it. A decision he regretted.
I had a1990 proton in 1991 1.5 gl cost £4000 had it 6years of hard driving even got a speeding fine and loss of licence on the motorway at 106.5 mph it never let me down sold to a mate £1600 with 70000 miles who had it a few more years and with 165000 miles on the clock it meet it,s maker not bad for a shit car as people say on here and they was base on a old Mitsubishi lancer good cheap motor at the time
Thanks for the upload. Throwing the fuse into the lake at 2:50 nowdays would have BBC's phones ringing off the hook with people complaining about the pollution and threat to aquatic organisms ;)
£8,990 back in 1991 is equivalent to just over £17,000 in today's money (2018). You could get a seriously nice car for that today. Especially if you're looking at the used market.
Watching it in 2020. There are some Malaysian still drives this car today. Proton GLS (Saga) and Wira is the most durable engine among proton's car before it's downfall on campro cvt nonsense. Proton saga is one of the achievement that can be proud as Malaysian because, it is the first time Malaysia entering car market and getting not a bad review. Now proton getting more ridiculous with super-tech-geely-rebadge car, while engine and air condition is getting worse.
@sonyviva308 where is selangor? I was in Kuala Lumpar last year. Just the airport, but i'd will go back there. It looked super flying into it. Authentic and beautiful.
"This base model ..... but it's shorter on equipment than the top of the range model" -you don't say. "It's not a car that will appeal to the enthusiast" another bombshell! This wasn't one of Chris Geoffeys better days...
I love the engine policy back in the 80s and 90s. Do you want a 1.2 litre with 80 HP, or a 1.3 Litre with 89 HP, he? You would think car makers would sell a bigger difference like 1.2 with 60, 1.6 with 90 or 2 litr with 120 or something like that.
@@malthuswasright There's probably much more in barns waiting to be rescued. In fact one has just been rescued from a garage after 10 yrs but it's the later MPI 12v.
This Proton was an underrated car. Here in America, this was the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Colt, and these cars were well constructed. I’d want one with an automatic transmission, power steering, and air conditioning. Sold overseas as Mitsubishi Lancer..
John Reagan , believe all the way into the early '90s... There are quite a few US-spec specimens running the streets of Puerto Rico reliably in sedan, 3 and 5 door hatchbacks and estates (most are 1.5L petrols w/some T-1.6's thrown in). And I swear those are more reliable than the Mirages and G4's they bring today from Thailand.
This car in this video was sold as Dodge/Plymouth Colt. Very good car for the money and very reliable. Mitsubishi doesn’t get the credit they deserve on their product.
Jeremy Saevn actually just hoping proton would bring up the new line of engine variants including the turbocharged 2L i4 or 2.4L for the next generation market Perdana... Actually Proton has R3 racing establishment,
Jeremy Saevn , you know why? Because ex-bmw engineers are working on kia/hyundai now, and most of those cars are designed by europeans to attract more european buyers. If proton employed europeans to design cars for them, then who knows, one day you might be onto the right track.
1:32 I'm sorry, what? Why would you change your car after 3-4 years? And why downgrade to a Proton? I would have rather had an older Japanese car than a new GLS... Damn consumerism... Also, imagine buying a new car nowadays only to find out there's water in the boot. It would be absolutely unacceptable!!
My friend was was run over when he was 6. He got his insurance money when he hit 18 years old in 1991, as it had been in trust. He blew the lot on one of these cars - it lasted him three years. It was literally falling to pieces, failed it’s MOT in ‘94 on absolutely everything and he sold it for about 500 quid.
we got the ones that followed.the funny part is how they had a hatchback model whereas mitsubishi with their own lancer was still using a design from 1989.
Jeremy Clarkson, on later Top Gears, would have driven that piece of crap with the watery boot right into the canal! Or at least dropped a piano on it.
I can't stop watching these old episodes, it's fucking with my head, I just love it.
Yazole I think car design used to be much more fun, and they all had a lot more character. They tend to look the same now!
@@brokenscart7989 Disagree. All cars looked the same in 1991, they all looked crap
Because knowing how a Proton drives is essential stuff!
I like how the steering wheel is already off-centre from brand new.
Saw the thumbnail and was trying to work out when Gerry Adams presented Top Gear.

Fascinating how Japanese car owners were looking for something EVEN CHEAPER. Kia/Hyundai represent the whole of Korean car manufacturers now

Don’t worry! We’re 10 years on from your comment and statues are now being thrown into docks and no one could care less.

A Kia Ceed starts at £18,850 for the base model - an i30 £17885- I'd say in a modern market thats an equivalent?
My sister had a 1990 Ford Festiva that had one mirror, it was on the drivers side. Certainly was legal back then.
What an intriguing underground car to choose as part of a road test :-)
Is it just me or did that steering wheel look like it was on crooked when he driving straight
+icemanroyal I'm guessing the test unit needed a wheel alignment check up. It's normal, nothing to be worried about.
Yes I noticed that. Not uncommon for cars of the period and before. Now they have to be dead straight because of airbags.
Wondered what that noise was until he said it was a warning buzzer!
Sounded like a bloke in the boot with a bugle!
A couple of years ago I got overtaken by this model in Malaysia. I was doing 186km/hr.

Had one, brilliant cars
One wing mirror that you adjust by hand…never seen that before!
Sir Gawain I've been driving for a long time. Including the eighties. I've never seen a car with one door mirror before!
You could order a base model Mercedes W126 with no passenger side mirror back in the 1980's. In Germany anyways.
Only 4 of these left now.
There is now ONE Proton 1.5 GL left on the roads! I suspect there are many more Japanese cars of the same vintage still going.

Chris Goffey had such long tender nails... see the Pug 106 and FIAT Uno reviews was he a Spanish guitar expert or something?
His son is Danny Goffey the drummer from the band Supergrass. So music may well run in the family your guess may be correct
I love this car i want one so bad. 😔
@willzer808 Selangor is just close to Kuala Lumpur...
This episode is from the 1990s. The factory might have moved from then, but then again, what would I know :D
1:45, whats up with that steering angle, he's on a straight road...
There is a silver one in they next road still running and looking in good condition!! No WONDER we have no car industry.
It was basically a rebadged Dodge colt sedan that sold here in the U.S. from 1985-1989, same engines and transmissions though.
So did Dodge used Japanese engines?
Adam Mickiewicz Yes Dodge used Mitsubishi engines from 1977-1997.
it's badge from Mitsubishi lancer fiore

Used to be in Shah Alam......................
Don't you just hate it when you get your nails caught under the seat when adjusting it?
@pkkwok2008 80's style. Either that or they couldn't be arsed to fit the other one.
I think it was legal to have just 1 back then I think alot of Japanese cars had 1 aswell
Maybe saved em a pence or 2 LOL
3:00 - leaks in the boot? - that might explain why there are so few of these things on the road.....
A potential rust trap I would have thought.
This video doesn't mention that this was a Dodge Colt in America in the late 80's - and was also sold in the states as the Mitsubishi Mirage.

Proton don't sell cars in the UK anymore.
looking back at this it definetly was the better choice to buy an 88 Galant that is now still running and driving flawlessly
Hmm... Proton's a good brand. Where's it from?

Hyundai/kia seems sooo different from proton now. They looked same back then. Compare Kia stinger / hyundai i30n to whatever proton is making now!

Rather odd how this model Proton never had a proper name - Just Proton 1.3 or 1.5...
+Generation Renter It's called Proton Saga/Knight in other markets.
+exoroxx I was aware of the Saga name used beyond the UK but never realised it was also called the Knight.
The Knight designation has been used for the 5dr saloon, but not for a long time as it has been changed to the way more trendy sounding 'Aeroback'.
