Back in the 90s and early 00s, I actually used to play JRPGs quite a bit. But somewhere down the line, JRPGs changed in ways that pushed me away from the genre, and I haven't thought about or played one since.
However, thanks to Eiyuden Chronicle : Hundred Heroes, I've realized that a genre is never truly gone so long as there are still those who remember it, and Hundred Heroes' ability to balance between old-school style and new-school quality of life improvements has brought me back to the table, interest renewed.

The mole boss has indeed a way to know where he would be, while he spin to burrow in the sand, he will take a angle toward where he will go. So if he is to the left, jump and look toward the right, he will be to the right, i saw that hint the second time he jumped.
I'm too old to go onto every Backlogs video and post "Magical Cutie Missile!" on every one.

As someone who put hundreds of hours into the first two Suikoden games, I'm truly looking forward to a modern spiritual successor of games already ahead of their time!

I figured out the mole boss's tell. While wearing headphones the audio has drums crash on the side the mole is going to pop up on. Its a sublt difference but you can listen for it.
Glad I decided to check in the comments section when im in the middle of the boss fight.

Honestly, I'm a little split. I was interested in Eiyuden Chronicles, but I've heard some things about questionable changes to the English translation. Based on Leamon's review though, I may still pick this up. Especially since it seems to have a such a heavy focus on story and worldbuilding, which is just the thing I've been looking for now that I've finally caught up with the Trails series.
Speaking of JRPG's Lemon, have you ever played the Xenoblade games from Monolithsoft? Some of the best JRPGs I've played in the last decade, with some of the best stories, main characters and villains, combat is pretty fun too. I also highly recommend Nihon Falcom's The Legend of Heroes: Trails series if you like the deep character, worldbuilding and story stuff.

They also made a quest based game in the world of eiyuden chronicle, with the extra development money, it is pretty good, it’s on both Xbox game pass and PlayStation +, it’s not turn based, it side by side action with combos, it’s about 4-10 hours to finish, check it out when you guys get a chance. It’s called Eiyuden Chronicle Rising

Awesome video! Is there any chance you could do one with a holy run or moonlight greatsword run in one of the souls game with the character lore narrative you do in your vids? That would be a really awesome to see, especially with the narrative you did in your beast claw run that was so cool to see how you did your way of putting the story of that run in the game!

Oooooh, nice!! Admittedly, between FFVII Rebirth, my Pokemon Emerald Nuzlocke, Witcher 3, and the upcoming Paper Mario TTYD Remake... I'm a little full up on RPGs at the moment. But I've always heard good things about Eiyuden Chronicle, and it always seemed like something up my alley. And with your genuine enjoyment of it here, Lemon... Suffice to say, it's bumped itself up a bit on my list of things to play.
Plus, on top of all that, I already love JRPGs to bits, and I'm an absolute sucker for the 2D-characters-in-3D-worlds style that's popped up with games like this, Octopath Traveler, etc. It just has so much charm...
Ooooh. Emerald is a tough nuzlocke. Also, have you heard of the moemon mod? Turns all of the pokemon in firered/emerald into girls doing cosplay. Good for memes.

Said this at the announcement of the premiere, but I am so glad that you picked up the game and enjoyed it. If you want you should also try out the prelude game Rising. If you end up doing everything from side missions to base expansion then you can actually transfer it over. From what ive seen there isnt much of a difference except in one area and maybe a little dialogue but if you dont mind the switch from jrpg to metoidvania and back then it is a great experience. Also it's a much shorter game so it is definitely a great hook for the story leaving you wanting more.

I just finished it with 100% recruitment, and OMG the game is fucking good if you love Suikoden. This game is a love letter to Suikoden 2.

Can anyone tell me how Speed works in the game? I've equipped characters to try to get them to attack in a certain order according to SPD but it doesn't work at all.
For instance i got Milana's SPD up to 199, the highest in my party however she still attacks third in line. Does anyone know what else effects turn order?

Currently 30 hours in and this games awesome. Reminds me alot of the old final fantasy and lotr games i could never get the hang of 😂
I knew having this mamy heroes sounded familiar. Though i havent played it, ive heard a little bit about a series called Suikoden through speedrunning. With this game being led by Suikoden series creator Yoshitaka Murayama and called a spiritual successor, it seems like a good way for me to try that out!
Radiata stories had a better recruitment system in my opinion with 170 npcs between 2 branching paths of the story. That game severely needs a sequel or remake.

It makes me unreasonably happy to see someone mention 5 instead of always talking about 1 and 2. Suikoden 5 is one of my favorite games of all time.

BACKLOGS ME BOY - I have 2 JRPG recommendations just for you to play in general - video or not from one enjoyer of games to another. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is pretty good - it has a lot of games (ive only played 1 and like half or 3/4ths of 2 lol) and then Ys 8 which is one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, makes me cry every time i play the game

The gimmick with the RNG: As you said, it does not feel great, at all, but it seems way better than having a characters dealing five times more damage just like that. This way it is simply a risk/reward decision and I am fine with that.
The death throes of the enemies. It only happened when fighting the soldiers of the Galdean Empire but it was admittedly strange.
That title reminds me a lot of the Trals series those games make a super good job at making a real world with lots of npc dialogues that are fun and are constantly updated witht the events of the story both your party or important npcs and minor ones aswell as a lot of care put into the world, seeing how eiyuuden chronicles handles it similarly makes me happy
To be fair I liked Trails more when they had less main characters and more Interactions between them and the NPCs so I am a bit worried about this game having 100.

Beside this game is about war, so it make sense that a lot of character join your party

Hey back logs i wonder if you have any tips on how to build a challenge run channel or just a channel in general yiur content inspired me to try it my self having trouble keeping views and geting likes and so on
Make the videos you want to make (don't chase views or trends), and just keep pumping out videos so the algorithm can understand what kind of content you're making.
RUclips can't really recommend you if you only have a few videos, so you just have to keep at it!

As someone who always was, am and will be JRPG fan I went into Eiyuden expecting to enjoy it a lot, sadly personally I can't say the game is for me, I tried it for quite few hours but it just did not grip me, and it's not about slow start or anything like that that some people claim for it (I mean, hell, my favorite game series is Trails and that takes you on wild ride of several arcs and big story in background that gets resolved after 10 games in the series, so no, it's not about me not having patience)
I dunno, maybe if I went deeper it would get better but if it didn't grip me in the time I gave it I don't think I can stick with it, it definitely has its charm and I tip my hat for them actually sticking to the 100 heroes monicker, the characters were (Generally) charming, but yea, personally not my thing, which is kinda sad
So you play lots of JRPGs, do you have any idea what he's rambling about in the intro? It honestly just feels like a sales pitch to me with him saying "JRPGs used to have this 'raw' feeling to them that modern JRPGs don't capture anymore, but this one that I'm getting paid to talk about totally does capture that vague feeling". Is there like an era thing I'm missing, or like a silver, gold, modern age thing he's talking about? Do you know what he might be talking about with that "raw" feeling to them?
@@donovanfaust3227 The best I can interpret what he might mean is that older JRPGs used to be far more to the point and focused
Take Persona for example, there is no denying that Persona 5 is great game and so is the recent Persona 3 remaster, however the OG Persona 3/P3FES had far more direct approach to things, it was more streamlined and there was not so much 'fluff' to it, like in Persona 5 you got billion side activities and minigames to do, where in P3 the most out of the ordinary thing you could've done was like... I dunno, crane game for Jack Frost doll?
I can't say if that is what he means exactly but that is my best guess, and I can sorta see it too, from what I did play of Eiyuuden it was more to the point then most modern JRPGs in a sense, there were side activities and jokes as he mentions but it was small part all things considered, compared to like I mentioned Persona 5 where the side activities can easily take half your playtime
My favorite jrpg is fire emblem three houses. Amazing story and solid gameplay

Do you have any comments on the localization? I've been looking through the reviews and that is a point that comes up a lot about this game.
Honestly, after looking at what people are upset about...I don't get it. Unless I've missed something, there's only a few lines that were changed in a 60 hour epic story. And not story-changing important lines, just one-off statements.
I dunno. The dialogue felt normal enough to me, to the point that I didn't even know localization was a thing when I played the game.
So unless I've missed something major, I think this might be a case of someone overreacting and the media following suit 🤷♂️
@@TheBacklogs Hi mate. The issue is the translation has been done by someone who has inserted their politics into it (is on record as saying so in the past that is their aim) - it wasn't just a few lines, it has butchered entire characters by making one in particular come across as childish etc.
This isn't just a few overreacting; the end result of this translation is vandalism of the developers work. The translation itself, overall, is awful; there's numerous mistakes even if you discount the 'political' ones.
I commented yesterday with genuine disappointment at seeing this video being paid for and glossing over this. If you honestly just had no awareness, that's actually fantastic as I love this channel - but please look it up and consider that it's not an overreaction and it's people who are genuine massive Suikoden fans who have looked forward to this game for years and seen a handful of people decimate it for selfish reasons. zakogdo on Twitter has a run down of the most egregious of the changes if you want to research; if not, all good, but I thought I'd give you a proper answer.
I gotta ask you to play Outward, Lemon! It's a flawed gem, but a gem nonetheless.
I mean...have you played some of the classic Final Fantasy games? 7 ,9 ,10 (Not X-2 just X.....We don't talk about X-2....X-2 doesn't exist) and 12 have been some of my fav.
I'm excited to see how the story plays out. I truly enjoyed the previous game and bought this day one but haven't had the time to play it. Seems that some people are unhappy with dialogue choices, but some people just tend to hate. Loving the content!
The grimoire in the mole boss fight is not random. The boss will face the direction where he will show up.

did the Hero Combo usefully? i buy the game on day 1 find out the Hero Combo damage is too low so i refund it. is that a bug or the game really design like that ?..?
It depends on the combo. Some combos hit multiple enemies, while others do specific damage types that might be stronger against certain enemies. Like any attack, it's situational, and can't be used for guaranteed big damage.

JRPGs lost me when i discovered i get way more immersed if i get to make my own character. if im forced to play only with premade figures, its becomes a interactive movie with bad paceing to me.

Hey Lemon! I'm sure someone else has said this, but that Mole boss where you have to pick the grimoires- There didn't appear to be a tell per se, but while playing I did notice that the pattern was 3 turns per side. So your first turn or two might be a gamble but once you can set a prediction it becomes more trivial.
Ya know, just gonna throw it out there for no specific reason, but… dark souls 3 has doors.. like.. shield doors.. ya know? Some might even call them door shields.. maybe..

You can't use magic in the tutorial though which could be considered failure.
Magic is pretty broken in this game, and the the only thing slowing you down, are the cooldowns.
Hey lemon a game to check out is unicorn overlord, it has a 7hr free demo, and is a lot of fun, plus about 60 unique classes to fight with
I love this game, it's not for everyone. Even with all of those minor issues. Definitely the game i need simple story , light JRPG game and a none realistic jrpg. Realism in games is just killing it for me. Takes away the fantasy in them , same goes to FF7 remake . I enjoyed them but they're losing the fantasy touch . But thats just me 😊
ATTENTION: Don't buy this game on PS4!
The loading times make it PHYSICALLY painful to play.
In Detail:
It takes me about 6 seconds to load into a random ecnounter and then it takes roughly 10 seconds to return to the exploration screen.
Every. Single. Time.
And this game is truly honouring the golden JRPGs, meaning you will walk aorund for 10 - 25 seconds and then get jumped by an "invisible" enemy. At least in the beginning of the game, those encounters can be resolved by issuing the auto-combat command and one round of attacks. That takes betweeen 8 and 10 seconds, depending on how many special attacks are performed.
At one point I got really unlucky with the encounter rng and playtime/blackscreen whrere roughly 50/50.....
As a big fan of Final Fantasy, Suikoden , Wild Arms, etc. I was really enthusiastic after Lemon's video and maybe I will give it another chance on PC if my refund goes through.....
Neat, but I think I’ll stick with Rising’s action gameplay. These types of turn based games always have a UI that just hurts to use.
This game reminds me too much of suikoden 2. Even the 10 hour new mechanic!

Mainly will never play old style jrpgs anymore because have to click after every sentence uttered, and have to click many times for one character to do a move against an enemy.
The new Mana game will hopefully be new enough style to be as good as the far superior western RPGs.
Actually, there's an auto dialogue option so you don't have to keep pressing buttons, and the auto battle feature is really indepth (lets you set up several if/then statements that activate with one button press).
