So, I won a set of these directly from Taylormade through a local Rep. I received them the day they were released, fully built. I have a 4-AW set makeup, shafted with KBS S-Taper shafts tuned to basically a 6.1 frequency. So, basically a Stiff + flex. 1.5* flat, standard lofts. My usual gamers are Adams Pro Black MB's w/ KBS Tour shafts in an X.
I got in 3 practice sessions, and 3 rounds in in the 2 weeks, before last. And, I have to be honest here, these things are actually really sweet! They were obviously far too long, considering the lofts, a 30.5* 7 iron?!? Holy balls! Anyway, they do NOT play like a GI or even mid GI club (which is kind of what they are). They look basically identical to the AP2 at address and feel really, really good. Better than the AP2, I'd say (which isn't hard). They're workable, they're easy to hit and it's fun to hit it that long. A 212-15 yard 7 iron?? That's fun!! However, not really conducive to scoring, which is my focus.
What is, or I should say, WAS missing from this set was the scorability factor. Because of the lofts, I had some weird gapping low in the set, and some other issues relating to loft. Last Thursday however (9/7), I went ahead and had them adjusted to match the lofts of my usual gamers, which is 34* on the 7 iron, and on from there. They're forged, so, they were easy to bend. And, once I did that, these things REALLY came alive for me personally. They're still about 1 club long, even matching loft to loft.
My low this year was a 1 under, 71 (72). And my low in the last five years, was a 2 under 69 (71). After I adjusted these, I played my home track (which houses my State's Open Championship annually) to a 3 under 68 (72). Usually you've got to factor in putting, but honestly, I didn't have a great putting day, finishing with 34 putts. Where the difference was, frankly, was the iron play. Shots were better, and results were more consistent. I'm a high spin player, so, I have to go long, and let the ball come back. These spun less, but, still enough to nicely stop.
These clubs, for whatever reason, are just very, very easy to hit. They're also laser accurate when you put a move on one. I can't tell you how many times I've ended up short when missing by just a hair with my blades. These allow that miss, and don't penalize you an ungodly amount. Other clubs are forgiving, but, not in this profile and not in this target demographic. Better players could play an i25, or i200, but, they're not a club that looks like a players club.
I think TM is looking for the mid-handicapper who wants a blade, but, can't play it. And, they got this one right, because not only do they get that guy, they're also getting the guy who can play a blade, but, doesn't want to work that hard. Let me just also clarify, I am ABSOLUTELY NOT a TM fanboy. So, for me to compliment these, is saying something, because frankly, TM has been steamy dog poo (irons wise and IMO) for a long, long time and I've not even bothered to look there or demo any of their sticks, in the last 6-8 years.
I don't know if the speed foam matters, but, PXG sells the shit out of their "foam" inserts in their 0311XFm which I have also hit, and they don't feel anywhere near as good as these do - at more than twice the cost..... Honestly, it's not even close. The only other foam filled hollow blade I've hit that felt close to this good was the KZG HB516, which was awesome - well, at least the first generation!
At the end of the day, I think they're worth a look. If you're a blade or CB type player, and you're looking for something a little easier, and more consistent to hit, these would be a really nice option. They look good, they feel great, and the playability is off the chart. Overall a nice set, that will probably stay in my bag for a while.

Yes, absolutely! Even prior to bending them I had plenty of spin, once back at normal loft ranges though, I did see an uptick in spin.

I bought a set (4-PW) of these irons when they were brand new in 2018. I was still a single figure handicap, but as I was getting older and in my late 50’s, I wanted a little more help and forgiveness. I still wanted a traditional looking iron as well so there wasn’t much if any choice out there. As soon as I tried out these irons, I feel in love with them. Not only did they look gorgeous, they were easy to hit with great feel and looked very traditional. It really ticked all the boxes. Theses clubs would suit someone who’s a low handicap but looking for a bit of help and forgiveness or a person who’s reached a level where cavity back irons feel too chunky. They are a good introduction to blade irons for someone who is coming down from 14 - single figure handicap. I won’t be upgrading these for another couple of years until I need to change shaft flex as they are the best irons that I’ve ever hit and beautiful to look at.

I was fitted and bought a full set of P790’s yesterday. I currently have the RSi2 iron which are fantastic irons but I was blown away by the P790 and just had to buy them. I did try all of the P range plus many other brands but I couldn’t believe the look, feel & consistency of the P790. My handicap is 6.

    • @oolaspalmas
      @oolaspalmas 6 лет назад +2

I just bought these irons and agree with you about look, feel and consistency. Tested against Titleist AP2 & AP3. It looks perfect behind ball compared to Titleist clubs. Feel is just superb when hitting to sweet spot. Off center hits also come out suprisingly good loosing hardly any distance. Very high launch concidering the loft. Titleist AP3 produced similiar ball flight but i didn't like the too soft feel in that club and it was not consistent enough compared to P 790.
Compared to my old Callaway X20 clubs i gained 10-15m distance and ball is launching much higher. Can't say about spin rates but it seemed like good values since ball was sucking itself up in to air. I was blown away how big difference there was to my old clubs. Can't wait to take these clubs to a round.

Rick, thanks for your review on the P790s. I was just fitted and ordered the P790s. Really loved the feel and distance results I got. Evidently my current irons (Ping i25s) shafts were all wrong for me. My fitter (Sittlers Golf Center, Ricky Kline) identified several issues and set me up big time. Really excited for this golf season. Thanks for your thorough review.

Rick, I think you must have had an off-day when you tested the P770 and P750 in Orlando. I suggest you retest them, now that the remainder of the family has launched. Maybe a 7-iron comparison from P-790 all the way down to the P-730

Got a 3-AW set in Ft Lauderdale, with a Nippon 95 shafts, 2 degrees flat, regular loft and length. Amazing to recover, at 58 years of age, the distance of years long past-by plus the control and feel of mi Mizunos MP68. Gap between clubs is quite regular in full swings, from 130 yards with the PW to about 210 with the 3I -I later got the 2I (driving Iron), which can well reach 240+ yards from off the tee. Must use higher-end golf balls, as “distance” balls become difficult to control, not to mention shaping the shot. Takes a few rounds to realize one can truly trust these irons, astonishing in pure hit shots and quite forgiving in slight misshits. Nevertheless, getting fitted for these clubs is a must.

I went with the same shafts! But I did 5-AW...Depending on how the 5i goes, I may go back for the 4i...love the concept of getting some accuracy at that distance and leaving hybrids and fairways in the bag until absolutely necessary..

4 iron is my saviour on shorter par 4s, or there's very little room with trees on both sides on a tight fairway. Even off the fairway it works for me :-)

I was just fitted, to replace my 1982 Eyes 2. After trying different shafts with different club heads, it came down to the P790 or Rogue Pro. The feel and look, and obviously forgiveness, led me to choosing the P790. Numbers were very similar. I was fitted on a trackman, using a 6 iron. While hitting between 175-185, and getting maybe 7-8 yards of roll, I felt that even though my spin rate decreased, I was getting more distance and accuracy from these clubs. I currently am a 17 HC.

I have been researching and experimenting for months now, as I've been ready to let go of my old Callaway X20's that I had custom fit by Hot Stix about 11 years back. I could never get more than 135 yards out of my 7 iron (my 6 went about the same and the 5 felt clunky) So, I'd end up using hybrids or coming up short on par 2's beyond that distance. I had demo'd a variety of clubs and have been experimenting with a single Ping G400 Max (7 iron only) for the last few weeks and it just wasn't doing it for me. My distance wasn't improving and I wasn't getting the feedback I needed. I was also annoyed with the fine chrome finish starting to wear off on the first trip to the range with the Pings. So I went out to the PGA Superstore today, grabbed the M4, MCGB's and P790 irons. I figured the P790's would be hard for me to hit being a high teens handicapper. But I added them to the mix after seeing this review. I simply could not believe how far they went and how good they felt. I gained 30 yards on average with the P790's compared to my Callaway's. (165 yds vs 135 yds) Granted the M4's went far too - but it felt a tad heavy and the feel wasn't there. My longest came in at 177 (total) which was absolutely shocking to me for a 7 irons. I ordered them up and am pretty pumped to get this next chapter started. Thanks for bringing these to my attention Rick - I really thought these clubs were out of my league until you brought them into focus!

Any plan to test the updated version of these Rick? The “superseded version” is priced very keenly if you can get hold of them. They have some minor cosmetic changes which I don’t really care about but would be curious to hear whether you felt there was any significant improvement to performance feel or sound.

    Mr. Rick
I'm pretty fresh into playing. First fitting started out with Callaway apex.hit them great, but the look started getting to me. I know that's a silly thing to say. Traded them in for the taylormade M4s just on looks over playability (I know bad form) really disliked the feel and playability. Watched your reviews of the P790s witch I was looking at for awhile and just came in today btw. I'm very excited to play them, and just wanted to let you know you were a great influence for my decision.

I had already ordered these clubs before watching this video and Rick has only reinforced what I felt after trying them out.
I wanted a club that launched high and came down steep but still maintained distance and these did all that and more. I also tried the new MCGB and JPX900 HOT irons and neither compared to the feel and control of these irons.
I cannot wait for my new set but will have to as TM have entirely sold out and have been taken aback by their popularity !

Got to give them credit for innovating. Seems they've got a club more similar in look and feel to a blade, but with the extra forgiveness. Strong lofts, but high launches and it seems to have found another niche in the market where you have a feel and traditional looks based club that higher handicappers that can't handle genuine blades can use.
Would love to see head to head comparisons of these clubs with more traditional lofted ones, but not based on number on the club or even loft. Just whatever clubs get you the same distance. So if you hit a modern 7 iron 200 yards then compare that to the traditional club you'd have to hit to get there (maybe as low as 5 iron) and see how stopping power compares then. I suspect traditional ones with more spin will still have more control and stop, but I don't think the differences are massive since the modern clubs maybe launch higher when comparing clubs that go the same distance.

His carry on the P-790 7 iron was 181. When he tested the P770 it was at 174 and the M1 was at 184. My thoughts is that the degrees of loft are same in the M1 and P790 and I believe the lowest club is the 3. Also the spins are similar in the P790 and M1. TM should make the same design but more fitting to their P770 to use as Mizuno did with Mp-h5 irons, making a 1, 2, 3 at same lofts as the MP5's.

Now hitting the 790 model 190+. Do you attribute that to your personal swing improvement, equipment, or what? You did a 5 year drive comparison but would like to see an iron comparison as well. Thanks

Beautiful clubs, but I really like the feel of the 770's. Don't know why you think they're hard -- there's a dullness to them, kind of a thud at strike, which I like a lot. Competes with Titleist and Srixon forged for sure.

Great looking club and I like the hollow head concept, but I'm starting to question the need for so many different iron models from TM and Callaway.

Rick I had the RSI 1 (until they were stolen from my car today) when I started playing 2 years ago and went from 21hcp down to 10hcp I'm interested in getting fitted for the first time with the P-790 are they somewhat similar to the RSI 1??

  • @stinman101

I wonder if the weather has any effect on the foam, be it high heat of sitting in a car's trunk on a 95* day or playing in the fall when it's 45*.
That would be interesting to see tested, but I'm sure TM ironed out those details in beta.

  • @BOATRIGHTGOLF

Irons like this and pxg make me wonder about the gel or plastic inserted into them right? I'm thinking after X amount of hits you could have inner deformation, weaking, and less elasticity creating a muted golf club that you spend 1k+ on.

  • @hrh4905

I really like the look of them and i hit a demo 7 iron about 185 at golftec. I'm sure it's because of the strong loft. That's the only demo iron they had in the 790's. But i too am concerned about the gapping between the 7 and the PW. 50 yards, with only two clubs in there? I've seen several others ask about the gapping concerns but don't see a single reply from Rick or others addressing it.
I'd love to buy a set of these, to replace my old TM R11's (yes, it's time), but i don't want to have a 50 yard gap to fill with just two clubs. (and then going higher, he only picks up about 30 yards going from 7 to 4)

@Mike Eastridge it's relevant in the sense that you gain a bigger gap after the wedge. If your wedge goes 130yds then you need 3-4 wedges from there. For a club handicapper, it would be more beneficial to bring the lofts back to the original angles and make sure the 50-120yd lengths are covered well. No mid-handicapper will need an iron with 19 degrees of loft, they need a hybrid or driving iron.

I don't hit very far but I am very accurate but I thought new clubs might make me hit longer. Tested a new six iron and it went the same distance as my 10 year old club... then I gave the club to a hard hitting young man and he did a 200 yard carry with it. Think I need to hit the gym instead of buying new clubs.. but these do look very good... :)

They look really nice. Not a big fan of the speed slot, makes it look a bit cheesy. The first 2 models they brought out are really good irons though. I know you weren't a fan, but you should give them another go. Maybe a head to head with all 3 irons.

Rick you’re getting some hate here about you loving all clubs but I’d beg to differ as you essentially said the 750 and 770 weren’t up your alley in this very video! Also, in this price range and this range of golfer, there are just bunches of really good irons out there from the major manufacturers! My country club has all these sets for demo and the P790 is a great club, I’m not a fan of the thickness but the feel is excellent.

Im an 8 handicap. I think i like the pxgs better...crazy price. Any thoughts or other clubs I should try. In the new irons I am testing with prject x LZ 5.5 shaft.
