As someone still playing the 17 version and looking to upgrade this video was extremely helpful, and the only one I could find comparing these 2 versions. Awesome video
Awesome comparison video Andy!! It's fun to see how technology has come along and also shows those older clubs can still hang, although, there is a clear advantage to the new model.
I’m still using my 2017 P790’s. 4-PW. I love them. I’ve had mine adjusted to more traditional lofts. (7iron - 33.5 degrees.) This has fixed the problem of “flyers” I’m all for advancement in technology, but after 6 years, All they’ve managed to squeeze out of it is 3 yds!! That’s not worth upgrading for the hefty price of £1500 in my opinion.
Thanks for the p790 comparison. I have the 2017 version . Just about ready to purchase a new set of irons . Your explanation of each model was very interesting . In the next couple of weeks I will have a session with my local professional to select the best irons for me . Your video provides w a number of key points to take to this future session . Great stuff.
Good video Andy, Rick Shields did a comparison of the 2021 and the 2023s and said the 21s were longer and felt better. Just a little info. Cheers.
I play forged blades with traditional lofts. Tried out the older P790 and hated it. Recently tried out the new P790 at indoor bay with launch monitor I use and surprise, really liked it. The souncd was crisp, not irritating, and the performance was great, an extra 10 to 15 yards carry with the 30.5 degree loft 7 iron compared to my 34 degree blade, but with a higher peak and the same descent angle. Will stick with my blades for pocketbook reasons, but if I had no clubs and needed new ones, this new P790 would be a top contender.
Those 2017 still command a hefty price!
I always find the P790s, much like any distance iron these days, so odd. Because the 7 iron looks like my 5 iron lol
also was neat to see you and Andy the other day at Carden :)
I think a big difference will be stopping power on the green - higher spin plus greater descent angle. For me Mizuno JPX Forged have been great first 850, currently 921 but I have always been tempted by the P790.
I have a gorgeous set of Muira CB501s which I thought were not only looters but very expensive back in 2012 when I got them. I tested various irons and having a set of KZG forged irons built for me a few years earlier which were buttery and consistent the Muira’s were a different class. I had a few years out due to cancer and was shocked to find that Muira CB501 has been dropped. Muira are still premium but would love your opinion. Great work by the way 🥂
They have dropped the CB501s but they still make some of the most beautiful and best feeling irons out there -TC201s are the ones I would pick or maybe the MC 502s
Do a 23 770 vs 23 790…please
i have 2023 p770 and a 2021 790....790 imo is a far superior club imo
That is the second edition of the P790 not the first edition.
Have the 2 iron and love it 👍🏻
Think you’re right. My 2017 790’s say Taylormade on the back. Not just T.
Yes that one came out late 2019/early 2020. May not sound as good as the 2023 but feels much better in my opinion. Definitely not changing.
Yup, the first gen version had “Taylormade” spelled out in full. Still love the look of the 2017 version.
Good catch
Please correct me if I’m wrong but I think these are the 2019 version. 2017 had TaylorMade written on the back of it
Isn’t that the 2019 version with only a TM logo instead of 2017 Taylormade being spelled out?
Good spot. It's the 2019 one and not 2017
I purchased the P790 23 model and have played three rounds with them. They are as good as advertised. They are long, straight, forgiving, and workable. What else do you need from an iron?
Have the PXG Gen 5 XF, thinking 💭 about changing to the new P790. Which do you believe has more forgiveness and accuracy. Thank you Andy
How does this new 790 comparison to your PXG gen 6 P iron
I agree that 2017 shape and size suits me better and it still looks good
Andy thinking of changing my razor x irons ,do you think newer irons would help with technology etc I am 20 handicapper
Yes I do, but try to get custom fit
I will stick with my 2017 p790 black irons. I hit the ball plenty high and plenty of spin. Even the 5 iron I can stick any green at 205 yards.
(Once Again) There was no mention of the shafts in each club - whether they were different or the same - and was the difference in performance really in the clubhead? Guess we'll never know.....
At 6:28 - he said the shafts were the same
This mythical flyer comes down to people being bad ball strikers. If you strike every shot bad the one shot you hit pure will go further. I'm a 4 handicap and i count the number of flyers i've had from my old p790s on one hand. They were all out of the rough had very little to do with the club. People have heard somebody say that so they just repeat it.
This is how I have always that as well.
@@jackvliet it’s silly at this point. The average 15 handicap is short on every iron shot. they could use the extra yardage of a “flyer”
@@greatwhite3676 exactly, I know it because I'm not the best ball striker. But after some studying on the Sim, I am the same distance short on a similar mishit with the 620mb as I am with the p790. Just different total distances.
Ive always heard or been told the 2nd gen p790s were the best 🤷
