9:57 The heavy weapons being handheld really only makes sense when wearing Power Armor, since in-universe that's what Power Armor was built to do. So instead of needing an armored vehicle to carry the .50 Cal to the frontline, you just have one guy in the suit carrying it around. 21:10 You have to unlock the Gauss Minigun by raising your reputation with the Raiders faction at the Crater settlement. It's a very powerful weapon, but its ammo is among the heavier ammo types in the game.
"So instead of needing an armored vehicle to carry the .50 Cal to the frontline, you just have one guy in the suit carrying it around" -- or, if you're the BoS you give it to your squire to carry 'til you need it.
There are perk synergies (Stabilized) for power armor and heavy weapons. So in a build designed to use these to their fullest potential there are benefits for the power armor over being without it.

There are so many more other interesting trivias and weapons in MGS3 so please Dave and Johnathan, please consider making a video for the MGS3.
10:55 Correction. There is a perk in the game called Stabilized under the Intelligence S.P.E.C.I.A.L. that increases the accuracy and armor ignoring capabilities of heavy weapons while in power armor. Yeah, it's tied to a perk, but is an obvious choice for a power armor heavy gunner build.
17:13 180gr. .50cal roundball can get over 2,000fps on a magnum powder charge with a tight patch. People greatly underestimate the power of muzzle-loaders. It just takes three days to load, and will massively rust if not cleaned immediately after shooting.
Yeah, the lack of velocity imparted by black powder weapons(comparatively speaking, of course) is the reason for the 2-bore and 4-bore "stopping rifles". When you absolutely had to put something down, the only way you could reliably do that was with a heavier bullet, since there was a notable limit on the pressure you could develop, and so the velocity you could impart, on a bullet.
My favourite weapon I picked up in 76 was a Black Powder Rifle with Instigating on it, which does double damage to targets at full health. It SHREDS. I called it Partystarter.
With regards to the 10mm Smg it is a pre war weapon. In general fallout for ballistic weapons follow a very unique design philosophy due to the resource wars and lack of oil supply most modern weapons in the lore are basically just steel aluminum and wood with some rubber. Very little plastics or bakelite. Giving it a very unique design aesthetic as well since it blends in ww2 weapons (which were still in use by many groups), 70s esque weapons, and mashed up modernish weapons with some post war hodgepodges as well. The barrel modifications regarding it are likely post war but do still fit with the weapon designs we’ve seen prior of it.
@gamespot In the game ARMA Reforger, when Johnathan Ferguson reacted initially he said the M16A2 gun had too much wear on the gun and in the newest update they removed the wear and listened!
19:04 The (legendary effect) Faster Firing Speed ones are deadlier and funner. It’s my goto for ammo efficiency and impact. Also, back during the Beta and early release days, an audiobug made it so you could hear them across the map. Sounded like some Anti-Air battery going off.
Harper’s Ferry in West Virginia used to be one of the 2 arsenals in the country that made black powder muzzle loading rifles. It was raided by John Brown before the Civil War and became a point of contention during the war. Kind of interesting.
Absolutely loved the video as always! In the games defense, the high damaged of the black powder weapons is allowed and or needed as an offset to the slow reload time for balancing. Also the leveling system (though needed due to being a multiplayer open world game) is more of a holdover from its original form upon release. In the initial release enemies would grow stronger depending on the region, and so as you gained higher levels, you needed higher damaging weapons to deal with new threats etc. This allowed for players to have a good idea of the grade and ability of their equipment, relative to the strength of the enemies in a zone this was changed in future updates where now the enemies level is scaled to each players level (so if two players are looking at the same enemy to one it may be a level 100 and to the other its a level 5) so that newer/low level players could play with their higher level friends. Also (something that is still relevant) is that balance wise it allows the game to level lock certain weapons so that you don't have a level 1 player running around with a fatman or auto grenade launcher just decimating all the low level enemies and/or causing a mess. Fun fact: Fallout 4 had a similar system to this, though being a single player game was able to be implemented more subtly. At higher levels enemies start using/spawning less with pipe weapons and more with combat rifles etc. the higher levels allow you to unlock more levels of gun nut, allowing you to modify your weapon to deal more damage to the now higher level and stronger enemies etc.
For the Colt Single Action Army i could imagine the first person animation to work, is that under the barrel there is some sort of button-pressed mechanism to spin the cylinder around (instead of ejecting the bullet-cases). But since the third person animation is completely different, there is no excuse for that. xD
Regarding the .50 machine gun (and the gatling gun and similar weapons), I always imposed a restriction on myself that I could ONLY use it while in power armor, because otherwise it just felt... silly. Honestly, I think an actual game mechanic that prevents some weapons being used when not in power armor would be a neat addition.
Hearing jonathan talk about that colt, I'd love to see him comment on the gun handling in a game like Call of Juarez Gunslinger, especially the perk to reload with the cylinder spinning the whole time
14:46 I actually jumped from the bayonet reveal! Such a pretty gun I didn't question what was going on up top at first. You know, that just might be one of the most terrifying weapons to imagine facing down. I think the psychological impact of a blunderbuss shot followed by readying that bad boy for a charge would be quite effective. On a related note, Jonathan's showmanship and presentation has really elevated over the years! Truly a class act.
They need to make a fallout game where some prewar soldier outside the vaults survived the nukes as a type of mutant who can gain different mutations that make different mutant beasts friendly
Wanted to point out, in 76, there are perks that significantly increase heavy weapon stability and decrease bullet spread while in power armor. At least I think? It's been a few years.
I love not only Jon’s commentary on the guns, but that he has some knowledge of the games and considers the world building and other factors in the game. Very awesome stuff.
Every time I see a Fallout weapons review video starring Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, I cannot help but sigh that we never got to hear his analysis of the artillery pieces from Fallout 4. It's right there in his goldurn title, Of Firearms and *Artillery*, how could they mess up that?!?
22:20 Actually, just like Nuka Cola, some companies sold branded firearms in the past during the 50s and 60s in America. J.C. Higgins manufactured firearms for Sears and JC Penny sold Glenfield firearms. I had a friend whose grandfather owned a JC Penny stamped pump action shotgun.
I have a reproduction of a Colt single action army from a company that remakes old guns. The one I purchased has that Calvary model barrel length for accuracy and help to control barrel rise and it is chambered in .45 long Colt. It is great to shoot and load the same as the original Colt peacemaker. It has a bit of hair trigger but I expected it for a single action gun. Can’t resist sometimes shooting one handed like as was common back in that era. I do like whenever games have early firearms ranging from the matchlock through to percussion firearms, whether it is to go with the setting or just for fun.
Fun fact about the 10mm SMG- the receiver is a Browning machine gun receiver flipped around and squashed! The designer consciously wanted to mimic that "movie gun" feel where it apes a real design but in a different way.
didnt you used to be able to get like a chevy branded winchester when you bought a pickup truck? very reminiscent of the western spirit at 22:15 cant remember exactly what brand of truck it was.

That old single action is so smart. When you think about when it was made the little click is really satisfying and tells you, you're good to load the next round.
From the 3rd person view of the reload of the M2 it looks like the player is putting the ammo box holder on his thigh to help balance it while holding the pistol grip.
You can actually retrieve some of the black powder weapons from John Brown's Fort which is both a museum in game and IRL Is in fact right next door Harper's Ferry Armory where massive numbers of firearms were produced with the "Fort" being the armory's firehouse where John Brown made his last stand and was the only original building of the armory left standing after the Civil War.
Fun fact - M2 first apperence in fallout series was all way back in 2001 in Fallout Tactics. It was extermaly deadly weapon there ( 2nd best in whole game, beaten only by exotic Gauss minigun ), especialy when loaded with depleted uranium AP ammo. Tho it also demaned very high strenght score ( 9 where human natural max was 10 ) to use it without penalties.

If you want to replicate the shotgun effect with gauss gun you just have a 'cartridge' with multiple projectiles (shots or dart etc.) of non ferromagnetic material sit on ferromagnetic sabot. Basically the shotgun shell without the shell, gunpowder and primer.
Fallout has had arcane and magic elements in the series since the very beginning. The entire plot of fallout 1 for example revolves around defeating a Psykers including telekinetics, Pyrokinetics, and Telepaths. It’s been a very consistent throughline for much of the series. Fallout 2 even has you help a ghost out.
I think I see the trigger finger twitching when the cylinder rotates on the Single Action Army. Maybe they thought it had the feature found on some later revolvers that let you rotate the cylinder with the trigger when the hammer is half cocked?
I use the Vampire's Gold .50 BMG as my go-to Big Gun. :) I've also got the exploding bullets mod, too. :) I added the Bayonet mod to my Blackpowder rifle. It has a brass handle, like the real ones, but the blade doesn't curve up. They used a Zouave bayonet as the model to mount on the 1841.
On SAA production in Fallout: I took the overabundance of "western" arms in Fallout from New Vegas onward as a symptom of the 50s retrofuture thing. In the mind of the 50s (right before the centennial of *that* war), "cowboy", and repro arms fitting that, would always be an "in" concept and never displaced by newer concepts, regardless of how long passed since the 1800s or how obsolete the mechanism is. Also the bicentennial of the "western" era in the 2070s will probably bring genuine interest in repros even in our world. As for the blunderbuss pistol: I'd expect the people of the 2070s staring down Armageddon to preserve some kind of newly made repro black powder gun in shelters out of fear smokeless powder, brass and primers would be impossible to find in the post-war environment while black powder from scratch is relatively easy. The obvious problem with that idea however is Bethesda went with a caplock, which needs a primer and would defeat the entire purpose, instead of a flintlock, which just needs black powder and lead. If you've got percussion, you might as well do a cap and ball revolver instead of a single shot. 81st week of asking for Jonathan Ferguson to react to Bullet Girls Phantasia. 12th week of asking for Loadout on games handle the interaction between firearms and character (stats) slash item progression for RPG shooters.
Not *strictly* true about the heavy weapon handling being the same in power armour. There's a perk you can take that means heavy guns in power armour gain increased accuracy, as though you were able to hold it more steady!
In America we make anything so long as it’s not full auto and follow the sbr and aow rules. Blunderbuss should be considered a muzzleloader so completely unregulated in USA
The two games that I'd really like Jonathan Ferguson (the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a a collection of thousands of Iconic weapons from throughout history) to react to are Warframe and Nikke. As... unique as the latter game is, there is at least one gun nerd on its development team which means that they have a lot of interesting reload animations, including one where a character swaps out their entire barrel, rather than a magazine or any other ammo storage/feed device.
You should show Jonathan the Operation Sunburst Animation by SODAZ when its finished! I think Jonathan would LOVE seeing all the guns depicted And how they're used Both by and against Power Armor
In colts first Fallout scene when he is butting his hand under barrel he uses his little finger while gripping in small lifting movement to rotate the barrel.
9:40 Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history, doesn't know Fallout as well as he thinks.
Just a note with the pump action, the first person reload animation is a bit fudged when the player pushes shells into the tube with the action open. On an 870 that would be impossible. Love the content!
Watched League of Extraordinary Gentlemen recently. One thing that mildly annoyed me about it was that you could tell the guns were only loaded for the amount needed for the scene. So at least twice the guns lock open way before they should if they were fully loaded. 10:00 Also, fun fact: in Dr Strangelove General Ripper holds a Browning 1919A4 (thanks IMFDb) which I found really funny because of just how…impractical it would be.

it's mentioned on a loading screen that many of the black powder weapons in the area were clamed from the various civil war collections in the are and that they were well antiquated even by the time of the bombs falling
Makes a lot of sense.
Loved that Jonathan mentioned Heretic. Hopefully GameSpot shows Jonathan another Raven software game. Maybe Singularity?
"Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history"
Heretic and Hexen are classics.
Surprised jonathan didn’t notice the 1873 colt revolvers cylinder turning the wrong direction
Now that I comment 'live' over the clip it's easy to miss obvious things like this as I'm still talking about something else. But it saves giving Dave and Adam 2 hours of footage to edit 😊
@@JonathanFergusonRoyalArmouries love your stuff and pls keep doing your thing
Also i hope you see the AK5C mod for Fallout 4 and its goody mag (with a reload you'll not expect to see animated)
@@markhirsch6301 Thank you!
@@JonathanFergusonRoyalArmouriesI’m so glad they didn’t show it with the Quadruple Ammo effect
Happy to see Jonathan get a better camera and mic.
That blunderbuss that Jonathan showed us is amazing!
Please Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries museum in the UK, break down the weapons from *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* before the remake comes out.
So many weapons in MGS3 to react and comment on like the Patriot's infinite ammo magazine, the EZ tranq gun, Snake's customized officer M1911A1, Snake whittling the pistol grip to use a knife for CQC, Ocelot's SAA juggling skills, The End's paratrooper tranquilizer Mosin Nagant, the Davey Crockett recoil-less nuclear launcher, Eva's chinese Type 17 mauser clone with her "bandit shooting" technique and Volgin's electricity discharging the 7.62mm bullets.

Glad to see a mention of the riveted guns from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Utterly love those designs, pure dieselpunk
"It's muzzleload-y enough."

I laughed at the black power rifle when he said theyre probably not from a museum....which in the game they are proving his point of contention lol
@gamespot In the game ARMA Reforger, when Johnathan Ferguson reacted initially he said the M16A2 gun had too much wear on the gun and in the newest update they removed the wear and listened!
I mean there has been a decent bit of supernatural stuff in Fallout so a gun regenerating health from hitting someone can make sense
19:04 The (legendary effect) Faster Firing Speed ones are deadlier and funner. It’s my goto for ammo efficiency and impact. Also, back during the Beta and early release days, an audiobug made it so you could hear them across the map. Sounded like some Anti-Air battery going off.
22:20 actually, Coca-Cola themed winchester 94 rifles (and I believe shotguns) were made for the 100 year anniversary of Coca-Cola in 1984.
Harper’s Ferry in West Virginia used to be one of the 2 arsenals in the country that made black powder muzzle loading rifles. It was raided by John Brown before the Civil War and became a point of contention during the war. Kind of interesting.
I love that this went straight from the 10mm SMG to the M2 MG, as the 10mm SMG is, somewhat infamously, just a small, backwards M2.
5:15, that 870's clockwork clicks are amazing..)
That SMG is actually from the ORIGINAL Fallout IIRC. Its the MP9 chambered in 10mm in FO1 and 2
For the Colt Single Action Army i could imagine the first person animation to work, is that under the barrel there is some sort of button-pressed mechanism to spin the cylinder around (instead of ejecting the bullet-cases).
It would be, but it would mean players would not like it for the lack of “accessibility”.
I mean the thing seems to do basically no damage,so that cancels it out a bit I think
But yeah, that’d be cool to see
Hearing jonathan talk about that colt, I'd love to see him comment on the gun handling in a game like Call of Juarez Gunslinger, especially the perk to reload with the cylinder spinning the whole time
Sad, the light machine gun was left out. Got to give some love to the MG42.
13:05 “Hey, I made a new shotgun!”
“Nice! Side-By-Side or Over/Under?”
“Uh…. Yes!”
Wanted to point out, in 76, there are perks that significantly increase heavy weapon stability and decrease bullet spread while in power armor. At least I think? It's been a few years.
I recently watched Kunk on Earth, and I was pleasantly surprised to see you on it
that flintlock was beautiful. the finish on the wood, the clean polished brass, the spring loaded bayonet. just beautiful.
I love not only Jon’s commentary on the guns, but that he has some knowledge of the games and considers the world building and other factors in the game. Very awesome stuff.
Funnily enough, the 10mm SMG is a downsized reversed M2 Browning with some extra bits all over. Thanks to the reddit post that taught me this
Every time I see a Fallout weapons review video starring Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, I cannot help but sigh that we never got to hear his analysis of the artillery pieces from Fallout 4. It's right there in his goldurn title, Of Firearms and *Artillery*, how could they mess up that?!?
I think Johnathan would get a real kick out of Ultrakill's weaponry, that'd be nice to see.
21:25 Fallout Tactics already had a gauss pistol, a gauss rifle and a gauss minigun which fire the 2mm EC magnetic projectiles.
Just a heads up.. Gauss pustole is started back at Fallout 2, and the gaus minigun first apear is Fallout Tactics ad the last map.
24:20
You can see that hes absolutely chuffed to bits at the fact that he knew what he was talking about with flying bugs
Fun fact about the 10mm SMG- the receiver is a Browning machine gun receiver flipped around and squashed! The designer consciously wanted to mimic that "movie gun" feel where it apes a real design but in a different way.
The Warmaster of Terra, Horus Lupercal commands Mister Ferguson to review the weapons of the Valkyria chronicles franchise.
There are alot more guns to cover in FO76...
I was waiting for a video like this and i LOVE it already
didnt you used to be able to get like a chevy branded winchester when you bought a pickup truck? very reminiscent of the western spirit at 22:15
cant remember exactly what brand of truck it was.
I would lay down my life for this man; Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history
9:08 it's even true in real life most guns heavily used usually almost entirely loose their original finishing after few years
That old single action is so smart. When you think about when it was made the little click is really satisfying and tells you, you're good to load the next round.
Wish I knew half of what Jonathan knows about firearms , Great Video 💯💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
From the 3rd person view of the reload of the M2 it looks like the player is putting the ammo box holder on his thigh to help balance it while holding the pistol grip.
You can actually retrieve some of the black powder weapons from John Brown's Fort which is both a museum in game and IRL Is in fact right next door Harper's Ferry Armory where massive numbers of firearms were produced with the "Fort" being the armory's firehouse where John Brown made his last stand and was the only original building of the armory left standing after the Civil War.
That's cool, ty for sharing
Can't believe you didn't show him the single action with a 24 round magazine
Clip.
The gausss mini gun also returns in 76
Unfortunately 2mm EC is the most expensive and heavy to make and use. Plus you get very little back.
Ah another great video with Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history.
There's still 1, 2 and Tactics. They all have pretty impressive voice casts for games at the time.
9:47 fallout does have aliens (not understood tech = magic) and magic (Lorenzo, ghosts, Dunvich)
I think Signalis guns would be a fun video to go over
They need to hire Jonathan for the next fallout game
I use the Vampire's Gold .50 BMG as my go-to Big Gun. :) I've also got the exploding bullets mod, too. :)
I added the Bayonet mod to my Blackpowder rifle.
The 10mm SMG is a pre-War weapon.
From before the Great War that ended the world.
The arcane stuff is in Fallout and has been since Fallout 3.
And it isn't just "reminiscent" of an HK, it's actually called the HK MP9 in Fallout 1&2.
wwww
A video on Armored Core 6 or Roboquest weapons would be interesting
The “yeah” and pause after the talk about the lack of handling change between power armour and no power armour was brilliant 😂
With the Colt Single, I just imagine they're pushing the ejecting rod and using their pinkie to advanced the cylinder
The sight ring on Short Gatling is very cool in an aero sort of way
I liked the bakelite battery on a gauss shotgun. Complements nixie tubes nicely.
The two games that I'd really like Jonathan Ferguson (the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a a collection of thousands of Iconic weapons from throughout history) to react to are Warframe and Nikke. As... unique as the latter game is, there is at least one gun nerd on its development team which means that they have a lot of interesting reload animations, including one where a character swaps out their entire barrel, rather than a magazine or any other ammo storage/feed device.
just a point the handling of heavy weapons do change with power armor if you have the perks like 'stabilised' etc.
You should show Jonathan the Operation Sunburst Animation by SODAZ when its finished!
I think Jonathan would LOVE seeing all the guns depicted
And how they're used
Both by and against Power Armor
In colts first Fallout scene when he is butting his hand under barrel he uses his little finger while gripping in small lifting movement to rotate the barrel.
I love that he's a Fallout fan as well as an expert. Love these series.
10:00
Also, fun fact: in Dr Strangelove General Ripper holds a Browning 1919A4 (thanks IMFDb) which I found really funny because of just how…impractical it would be.
Seeing Jonathan react to the Single Action Army almost makes me wish for a Fistful of Frags episode.
