I’d like to make a small correction about the P90 (and MP7 by extension) and it being developed to penetrate Russian body armor. Shortly after I said this, old documents from the NATO pdw trials were released detailing that penetration of hard body armor was never a goal of the PDW trials. Mostly the goal was to find a low recoil, high velocity replacement for 9mm. There are two videos by Oxide and 9hole reviews on this subject that are very informative. At the time, the info about it “being able to penetrate hard armor” as a design goal was correct, but new info disproves this, and I was wrong. However, both 5.7 and 4.6 AP rounds are capable of penetrating soft body armor, though I cannot speak to the effectiveness, as I have not tested it personally. I 100% believe that Bethesda never considered that somebody who doesn't know anything about guns probably wouldn't be able to build anything close to functioning
Sadly, we don't operate on Warhammer Ork logic so most of these unholy abominations would have just exploded or jammed after the first round (if some of them even fired at all).
I actually saw Zach's rant about the Fallout 4 "Assault rifle" a while ago and decided to replay a bit of the game for nostalgia's sake. I was able to get a legendary version of the assault rifle and modded it to be as OP as I can get it. And since the game allows you to name guns, I thought about what was the most appropriate thing to name it when I remembered this clip of Zach talking about it and decided to name mine "Zach's Nightmare" and I used it for like 80% of my playthrough.
Since on ps4 there isn't any cool modded guns cuz sony, instead I get a mod that lets you put any parts (any gun attachment/modifers) onto any gun, so I had a 10mm with a minigun barrel that shot fatman shots
6:45 Mike: "You guys have weird rules" Zach: "N-" **thinks about .357 and .38 being the same diameter, the US Army naming their 105mm recoilless rifle ammo "106mm" to avoid ammo mix-ups, the .410 cartridge using caliber instead of gauge like every other shot shell, and many other examples** "Yeah..."
To be fair, you can measure .410 Bore in gauge. It's a 67 gauge shell. But that doesn't sound as good, and with shells that small it makes more sense to use caliber.
@@nickrustyson8124 It has its applications. It can be fired from a pistol, which you can't really do with other shot shells, and it's small, so you can load a shit ton of em into a full sized shotgun.
To be fair… the Fallout 4 assault rifle wasn’t meant to be the assault rifle. It was meant to be a heavy weapon exclusive to power armor, serving as an LMG so not every single member of the brotherhood had laser rifles and some could use ballistics. However it was made late in development and as they’d cut the heavy weapon/power armor restriction, in response to testers not using heavy weapons (mostly because fusions cores were scarce), they ended up changing it from a power armor LMG to the abomination assault rifle we have now.
@@lego007guym8 I wouldn’t recommend it because it would just make the assault rifle worse, but I would like to see the brotherhood use it. I wonder if the rifle AI (since the combat AI of NPCs is usually determined by weapon) would make it more or less threatening than the minigun wielding brotherhood.
I know nothing about guns and even I immediately realized how trash the fallout 4 guns look. Going from new Vegas guns to 4 is fucking shocking. They’re probably the worst looking video game weapons I’ve ever seen and I’ve played a shit ton of shooters.

Fun fact, the "Assault Rifle" was meant to be a handheld lmg used exclusively in power armor. But Bethesda scrapped the idea it was designed for late in production.
They should have scrapped the whole thing. Armor or no armor, it follows very little firearm logic, it looks ridiculous even for sci-fi standards, and it's a rather mediocre weapon when most other guns do everything it does but better.

Real quick if I remember my halo lore, the AR and the Magnum have built in cameras right above the barrel that would interface with a soldiers HUD. And so to "aim down sights" they'd essentially be looking through the camera on their visor/eye piece. IDK if that would realistically be useful, but I do know it helped cause if someone stole a UNSC gun, they most likely couldn't use the camera and thus had a gun without iron sights.
Technically the military is actually investing into technology that puts a camera into soldiers guns and having a HUD that shows them what the camera sees. I forget the project name, but if it’s not practical, it’s at least being tested nowadays
A Delta Force style scope mechanic that replaces your weapon model with a scope view but still gives you full screen hud would be a neat way to make that mechanic work.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a mod where pipe weapons are the only ones with item condition by the way they're assembled. It would take considerable skill to make them able to fire all of the 50 round magazine without falling apart.
Seriously the default assault rifle in Fallout looks more like an lmg it looks like it should be used by someone in power armor, correctly somewhere in the file the assault rifle is labeled lmg or machine gun something to that effect. .
I'm sorry if anyone has already said it, but here it is: The FAMAS can be converted to left hand in about 5-10 minutes. You just have to swap the cover you put your cheek on to the other side and do the same for the ejector on the bolt
@@TH3H3LLR41S3R You don't even need a screwdriver believe it or not. For the Halo Ma5D that cowling is removeable, to reveal the iron sights, but a lot of marines keep it on because their helmet's have a link the gun to see where they're aiming that way. Also the gun is too small because the dimensions for it were based off the super soldier Master chief who is like twice the size of most people. So yeah, too small looks like a toy in his hands. The Halo Pistol is similar in the cowling, that top part of it has a camera that is linked to most marine helmets that acts as 2x scope. 1:17:00 if i remember correctly human guns in the halo universe are connected to a hud display thing on the soldier's helmet (in CE it's the green eyepiece thing), so it will just show you where it's aiming at instead of needing a sight. Though it's probably just a lore explanation for the hud seen in the games.
Also a similar thing with the pistol where it has a 2x scope fixed to the top of it that is linked with the wielders HUD. It also should be noted the Pistol from Halo 1 was specifically designed for Spartans to use, hence the large frame and caliber.

24:53 to answer Mike’s question, while there are safety features in some more modern rifle grenades, typically the force from shooting a live round through one is highly likely to detonate it. There’s a famous picture of an M1 Garand, Barrel split open in four pieces like a banana almost the entire way down to the receiver, and the wood basically gone, while laying against the legs of the soldier that fired it, though it doesn’t show him from the waist-up. Man I'd love to see what Zach would have to say about the "Slaught-o-matic" from Cyberpunk. It looks like a toy, sounds about as pathetic as a cap gun, and is somehow capable of full-auto fire.
The thing about the slaughtomatics (and why I love them as a representation of how fucked Night City is) is that they aren't meant to be good guns. They're literally the firearm equivalent of those little capsule toys you can get for 50-75¢ at supermarkets. Cheap, easily mass produced, and conveniently disposable once it's past its two hour life expectancy.
57:08 Today we learned, that The Deliverer makes absolutely no sense as a gun. Meanwhile, it's probably the best Pistol in the entire Game (without Mods).
I always thought that Deliverer made no sense because it's been heavily modified and rechambered from its original design by Tinker Tom with whatever he had on-hand.
10:25 A lot of games show guns as being "left-handed". The idea is that they want players to see the bullet casings coming out of the gun. Give the game more of an "action" vibe I suppose. Basically, game designers intentionally make their guns left-handed for "artistic" reasons. They aren't always trying to be realistic.
I remember hearing it may actually be golden eye's fault as the lead designer was left handed? but then they kept the model and moved it to the right side of the character (i'm going off memory so feel free to correct me)
I know enough that I know reloading the mirrored rifles feels off.Luckily there is a mod that makes them right handed again, and the animations are so much better.
20:56 The P90 ejects cases downward, so it's truly ambidextrous. Also, the magazine covers most of the top of the gun, so it's not entirely behind the trigger. The P90 is a bullpup because the action, including the chamber, is behind the trigger.
Mike is my spirit animal. Anytime these two talk about guns I can easily see my husband and I talking the same way. I know very little about guns while my husband knows so much! I also try to contribute to the conversation with nonsense and my very limited knowledge.
About the FAMAS. I'm pretty sure the cheekrest piece/ejection port part of the rifle is symetrical, and can therefore be turned arround 180° to make it left handed (you can see its outline when looking at the gun's profile) BTW for those who are curious, FAMAS stands for "Fusil d'Assaut Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-etienne" (Saint-Etienne's arms manufacture assault rifle)
From my understanding the fallout 4 "assault rifle" was designed like this so it would look good with power armor & was originally supposed to be a light machine gun. I'd honestly rather have the service rifle with a drum mag mod or simply add the stoner 63 that way we could have an RPK like rifle

I’ll try to give some details on the famas since I recently completed basic training in the French forces during which we mostly use the famas. After that it’s standard issue hk416. I’m left handed so basically you can switch the extractor to the left side on the famas bolt, reassemble, then attach the cheek rest dust cover piece to the other (right) side and your famas is now left handed (as in, shell ejection to the left. Otherwise it’s completely ambidextrous controls wise. The piece at the top is actually called a "carry handle handguard" if I had to translate it from "poignée garde-main". It is detachable also. It has to be, so you can zero the ironsights, and for maintenance. The reason why the French don’t like to walk around carrying it this way is because we don’t like having the barrel of the gun pointed at everything as we move around. It’s considered sort of a "gun safety" issue if you will. Cool gun overall, has two different rear sight flip ups including a precision one that can be used for shots up to 600 meters. Tricky if your eyesight isn’t perfect but it does work. Firing blank rounds is the only thing I’ve seen cause cycling issues. That gun is mostly plastic but hell can it take a beating! (Source: there are many ways you can hit someone with it, and trust me their bones will break way before any of the gun’s plastic parts lol)
I appreciate the plastic vs bones bit in particular, that's always been something I wondered about, especially when it comes to bullpups made of a lot of polymer. I suppose it depends on the structuring and the polymer type as well though, so other rifles may not hold up as well

Fun fact about the halo pistol: those explosive rounds were what chief was running around with in halo:CE. Mf using explosive rounds on grunts. Also the assault rifle doesn’t have sights because by the time of 2552 HUD systems have become extremely reliable. But I do think there is iron sights, just hidden.
10:25 Well that one is easy to answer- it looks cooler on screen when it ejects to the left. The entire point of proper ejection is to be unobtrusive and nondistracting. Being cool is usually a secondary concern over function because it is life and death. However, video game weapons are focused on the experience- a game is made or broken based off of how the guns feel. Sound and visual cues are essential. And you usually can't see properly ejected casings since it would go off the side of screen with your field of view when hip firing. You can see a little more when aiming down the sights, but it isn't much better. As such, if they throw casings across the middle of the screen, you are definitely going to see them and think "cool, it is going pew pew".
Controversial opinion I actually like the hunting rifle designed to the left. It looks slightly more intuitive to shoot quicker right handed. It would just be annoying eating brass.
Note- this is also why video game melee weapons tend to be pverly large. When you have a third person camera, your character only takes up a small portion of the screen. Properly sized weapons would be tiny. So big, colorful weapons are preferred.
Not just seeing the brass, but also seeing more working parts more often. The shooter side of a gun is often smooth and static, because you don't want bullshit hitting you or snagging on your kit/clothes. But that isn't a concern in the virtual world, so you can put as much of the working parts on the user side as you wanted.

That is actually pretty cool
iirc you can remove that ammo counter (fittingly enough, similar to an FN F2000) and there's more conventional sights underneath
Technically the military is actually investing into technology that puts a camera into soldiers guns and having a HUD that shows them what the camera sees. I forget the project name, but if it’s not practical, it’s at least being tested nowadays

I'm pretty sure the cheekrest piece/ejection port part of the rifle is symetrical, and can therefore be turned arround 180° to make it left handed (you can see its outline when looking at the gun's profile)
BTW for those who are curious, FAMAS stands for "Fusil d'Assaut Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-etienne" (Saint-Etienne's arms manufacture assault rifle)
"I can't do gun math". Zach absolutely stumped by the accuracy of that statement.
From my understanding the fallout 4 "assault rifle" was designed like this so it would look good with power armor & was originally supposed to be a light machine gun.
I'd honestly rather have the service rifle with a drum mag mod or simply add the stoner 63 that way we could have an RPK like rifle
@@Gigadweeb I never denied that it looked absolutely ugly, that's why I always use a full auto combat rifle because at least it kinda looks like a BAR. I'm pretty sure Bethesda just gave the gun concept job to the person who knows very little about firearms
As a GFL player these videos make me sound a lot smarter to other GFL players, thank you for teaching me so much about other guns
Ah a fellow commander
I love how he can look at a mod gun and see pieces from other guns on it and know exactly what every tiny piece is from.
Fun fact; that pistol bayonet is a real thing, you can buy in real life, and put on your real gun. I think it's even officially licensed from KA-BAR.
It's always so wholesome hearing Zach fanboy over finding a gun he's particularly fond of
Especially when the gun is properly modeled and represented
Like a lil kid on Christmas day getting every present he wished for. It's downright heart warming.
Christmas came early
"Wholesome" isnt the word I'd use: He sounds like a 12 year old that found his dads Playboy magazine underneath the bed
Zach's "NO!" after Mike suggesting he convert the Stechkin to FLECHETTES is hilariously delivered
Everybody stay calm. It's happening. Zach is doing the thing!
I'm freaking out!
What is the procedure?
Zach is like my father, talks to me about guns for an hour meanwhile i'm just there trying to understand what he's saying.
"In the post apocalypse people tend to hoj poj their guns"
Thank you mike for saving some of Zach's sanity by not telling him that its prewar
I still enjoy how when Mike says "guns have weird math rules" Zach ALMOST argues before pointing out that 8mm is larger than 5mm.
you know its going to be a good story whenever Zach says "When I was in the Military"
Zach being just.... stunned and in awe of Mike getting the A4 handguard thing correct is fucking glorious.
This series has helped me learn a lot about firearms, but ammo sizes still confuse the shit outta me. I can relate to Mike when Zach talks about ammo sizes.
I would also like to see Zach go through all the guns in Battlefield 4. They have basically all his favorites and I'm curious on what the game gets wrong.
What confuses you? If it's the switch between metric and imperial then same
@@thatsnomoon4221 Non-gun people also tend to get confused by how some ammunition types also round their measurements up or down to avoid confusion with other rounds of the same dimension.
@@j.murphy4884 that confused me too, because I always thought the Kar98 was chambered in 8mm because the cartridge is called that, but somehow it was supposed to fit in an MG42 which was chambered for 7.92? Until I learned that 8mm Mauser was just 7.92. Or I heard somewhere that the 3 inch, 76mm and 75mm tank guns are all the same caliber and just renamed to avoid confusion
That makes me wonder how many other calibres I confused
Just know that one inch is around 25mm
also know that the round's length also matters
@@KettleHatt so
I've read that the number of gauges is the number of pellets weighing a pound
so 3 gauge - 3 pellets, meaning 1 pellet = 0,(3) pound
Or with 12 gauge - 12 pellets is 1 pound so 1 pellet = 1/12 of a pound
or was it a pound?
don't remember, but that's basically it
Ain't .410 just the diameter of the "casing" in inches?
The absolute deadpan delivery of “ah yes the beckler & toch mp9” was an absolute masterpiece.

Gotta say I got mad respect for Zach. Dude went to war with a major undiagnosed gut fuckup. I got BAM and can rarely leave the house. Man has stones.
Damn, that really sucks man, I’m sorry to hear that. To be fair, I’m not that much of a badass; the celiac disease didn’t really start to develop until after I got out of the military. But I appreciate the respect!
@@Zach_Hazard It's not the cards you're dealt that matter, it's how you play them.
Also, I expect you get this a lot but I've got a couple of guns that might be interesting to look at for the show; The Luty 9mm and the FGC-9. Neither are good submachine guns but both have very interesting backstories.
Might be worth a look.
@@Zach_Hazard i hate to correct you but desert eagle is Minnesota
Bone to pick here guys; the Desert Eagle is actually made in Minnesota, not Wisconsin. Don't go giving the cheeseheads credit for our idiot-cannon 😁

Based.
Unironically, Zach's gun rants are among my very favorite content on the whole internet. I could listen to these all day.
I suppose it depends on the structuring and the polymer type as well though, so other rifles may not hold up as well
19:23 as a baguette living 30 mins from Saint Étienne, hearing Zack being so excited and praising the Famas is really nice
I want an airsoft replica of that gun so bad
as a cheeseburger living a quarter mile from the nearest McDonald's, i am saddened more Famases (Famai?) will never set foot on this land legally
Do the marines have huds?
@@b2superbattledroid977 yeah, the glasses they wear have a built in HUD system.
@@Chad_Thunder-Koch cool
12.7x40mm Semi Armour Piercing-High Explosive rounds.
@@56bturn definition of overkill
I like to call this the rule of cool, which is something that people like Zach tend to not understand. Jonathon Ferguson gets this. I like Zach and all, but I roll my eyes every time he gets INCREDIBLY nitpicky and it isn’t deserved.
@@brawler5760jonathan ferguson I'm pretty sure isn't on the spectrum. Also I think zach chews the scenery sometimes. On his channel his gun rants are more chill.
56:49, that cursed abomination is a reference to snake plisskin's mac-10 from escape from new york which it was in this exact configuration.
I’m glad Zach was as annoyed with the “Assault rifle” as I was. I still wanna find the person at Bethesda and slap the shit outta them for green lighting it.
Slap the person who changed it from being an actual 50 cal vickers gun that would be used with power armor to an assault rifle. The intended purpose is neat, the one people gave it was quite terrible
@@somewhereelse1235 even then it's horrible
why couldn't they use something based on the Browning Machine Gun - the machine gun that the caliber was named after?!
It's weird to have water-cooled stuff when ya have all this stuff like 10mms or _energy weapons_
@@The-jy3yq Oh it's absolutely stupid and doesn't make sense why they designed it as they had instead of using a weapon that looks like it'd have been a far heavier hitting weapon that'd fit in the hands of power armor, but that's just the way Bethesda is.
Yes
You want to slap someone because a game with giant mutant insects, aliens, and sapient robots doesn't have 100% gun accuracy?
Do you have meds you're supposed to be taking?
As a French lad it always makes me happy to see gun people loving the FAMAS, first Ian and now Zach.
Oh what could have been if we had kept on developping and manufacturing guns..
It's actually Ian that taught me the beauty of historical French gun culture.
Sorry that isn't really a thing anymore. Maybe a bunch of gun-loving Frenchmen could move to the US and make a conclave like Pennsylvania and the Dutch (and Germans pretending to be Dutch).
New St. Etienne.
@@passingrando6457 As tempting as that sounds, in my mind they wouldn't be French guns anymore. Just like the Desert Eagle is considered as an Israeli gun despite it having been designed in the US.
It's a sad thing indeed that we stopped trying to be a superpower, the closing of the MAS only being a symptom of that. Hopefully there will be change, but for now France seems to be well on its way to exit the history books.
@@Dextroyer77 Best wishes, Frenchbro. I know the pain of seeing national pride become a dirty word to many. Too many people these days seem to think that the only way to right the wrongs of the past is to destroy everything that came before, and that pride in one's history is a sin (for some people, it seems selectively enforced).
Maybe things are changing for the better, could be worse
I’ve always loved the p90 as a pdw, still have the airsoft one I bought 7 years ago. Funny thing about it was no one wanted to use it because of its size but it hit the hardest of any other airsoft gun I had
Love how when mike found an mp5 he pretty much came on the spot.
Also, the halo CE magnum is considered a weapon of mass destruction. Give like 2 to a single Spartan and they could use it to wipe an entire race out unless a jackal sniper got em. Hell, give it to an odst and they can probably wipe half a continent.
1:21:31 you see, you use the "tiny bayonet" as a knife to eat canned cooked meat, like in STALKER or Tarkov (I forget which one does that, but I'm guessing that it's Tarkov, because at least in SoC you just instantly eat things with no animation).
It's just held onto the gun for safekeeping.
I think it’s called the pigsticker bayonet
You can use it to open letters. That's it
33:13 Fallout and Fallout 2 had .44" Magnum Desert Eagles. I'd choose the .44" Magnum version because it holds one more round than the .50" AE version.
The ironic thing is, the "Assault Rifle" from the vanilla game, is one of the best full auto guns in the game. ESPECIALLY if you get it with the Two-Shot legendary. It's utterly ridiculous, but also incredibly lethal.
if you want an even better automatic, the Kiloton Radium Rifle is probably your best bet. It can gain damage bonuses from the commando perk, the explosives perk (I think) and the radiation perk. With the added bonus of being in .45 rather than 5.56, a much more common round in game.
aesthetics > Function
I think I heard somewhere that the assault rifle was originally going to be an LMG that would be designed to be used with power armor, kind of like with heavier weapons like the mini gun lore wise
@@gearhooves5996 That was the idea for the AR and the 10mm Pistol redesign, too. They should have stuck with the R91 (G3 copy) and Type 93 (Chinese AR) from Fallout 3. At least the .44 and Nuka World revolvers and AK are okay. Bethesda did a passable job with most of Fallout 3's guns, and then forgot everything when making 4.
That Kalash at 17:40 is actually quite legit :) It's from the shortened series of AK-102 (5.56x45), 104 (7.62x39) and 105 (5.45x39). I do love the flipped receiver though :)

I don't know guns, so it just looks like an AKS-74u to me.
The funny thing is, I actually know a LOT about improvised firearms. I've seen abjectly ridiculous things like this one bizarre AKM-Dragunov rifle that has two ten-round dragunov mags welded together.
...And Fallout 4's default guns, especially the pipe guns, are too horrible for me.
I had downloaded the makeshift shotgun mod, the one Zach called a zip gun, and I found out it can be converted into a grenade launcher and a fat man but the range on it go BRRRRR.
I have discovered that the latter conversion has tracking. How I found out was through it locking onto dogmeat while I was test firing it. I shot it and the nuke whistled off into the distance... then the whistling grew louder, it hit dog square in the face and blew both of us up.
how is this makeshift shotgun able to propel mini nukes without any kind of catapult in it?
The Fat Man lobs mini nukes, it doesn't shoot them
@@The-jy3yq Basically the nukes that the shotgun fires are nuclear 40mm grenades. They are less common than actual mini nukes which is a pain.
