So how would you get the different colors in the differing blocks? Is there a jellyroll that changes color? I have made this pattern twice and I could not get my squares at 8 and a 1/2 inches

Plus, I like your reason for using the squares--you get all those colors without having to buy a lot of fabric. Always enjoy seeing what new ideas you have.

You can just use 5x5 inch squares and then put a solid on top of a print, then sew on both sides, opposite ends, then cut between the parts not sewn. You get the same thing, Then flip and match up to form the design then sew the blocks together.
yep, JD @ MSQC did just that. However I would prefer to do the rolie polie as RB calls her strips. you can get a huge quilt out of those strips. and they are already 2.5"

I assume a similar cotton, but am new to making a quilt, so not sure what would wash well once it is made. Would you use wadding between the top layer and backing? There is some question here in England of what is best for a baby because of the heat that's involved. Inspirational video, and I intend to follow you for more instructions.
Judith Etheridge I would use a tone on tone white to give it some texture. I would also use batting between the layers. It is a dense, thin polyester batting in our baby quilts. Thank you for watching.

When your squares have a zig zagged edge, do you consider the zig zag as part of the square, or extra to leave hanging over the edge? Does that make sense? lol

I do not know if the fabrics were made into a jelly roll. A jelly roll will absolutely work for this technique. Thank you for watching.

This was a nice tutorial. Would it had been any different if you had cut all at 5 " instead of 4 1/2"? I don't like waste.
I would use 2 1/2 strips sew them together and then cut to 4 1/2 squares. Seems like using 10 square you waste fabric. Just my idea.
That is an excellent option but sometimes the 10 inch blocks are whats is available.

You don't want to leave extra, but you do want it as close to the edge as possible. If that doesn't answer your question, please try again! :)
I count it in with my 1/4 in seam.
What is the hand rotary cutter that you use? That is really unique.

How did you find the fabric to match the ten inch block so that the border is the same as one of the ten inch blocks?

Why don’t you just do a strip set
You absolutely can but sometimes it's nice to have a variety of ways to use the precuts that the local store offers.
