I have suffered from left hip pain for the last 10 years. For the past year the pain extended down the side and to the front of my thigh. So painful I had trouble sleeping. I didn’t know what was wrong until recently when I was dx with bursitis. I’ve Had PT, acupuncture, and a steroid injection, all with no relief . I watched this video and only did the clenching of the buttocks. I could do it lying down, standing and even driving in my car. First thing that happened, pain in my leg went away as the pain in my hip subsided. Tonight I sit here completely pain free. This took 1 week to get relief. I can’t thank you enough. God bless you ❤

I had THR with bone graft on acetabulum. 6 months after surgery I am experiencing sciatic nerve pain lower right side moving some towards butt. I am familiar with these exercises but wondering if I should try them or wait until I see the surgeon who did my surgery?

@@marlainerose3340 you could call your primary care doctor and see if you can get physical therapy. I would think after 6 months you wouldn’t hurt anything doing the clinching method- but I am not a doctor.

Wow! I’ve had hip bursitis for the past couple of months after damaging tendons in two falls in July and August of this year. I was in a lot of pain and could hardly get out of bed, bend over and do my usual chores. I came across this video and did the exercises. In a couple of days I was virtually pain free and able to move more freely. The change has been so dramatic !Thank you so much !

Amazing. I've had hip Bursitis on and off for the last year...All the exercises I've been doing, are as you say not the correct ones, and I've been doing them wrong. I came across your video and after the first round of these exercises tonight, I already notice a difference. 1st Round!! I must be dreaming. Credit due; A couple months ago, I started having a lot of pain in my right hip to the point where I worried I might need surgery. Found your video and started watching it but got interrupted by something and forgot about it. I saw the video again on my feed a couple weeks later and decided to watch it. After doing these exercises the pain is nearly gone and am back to jogging regularly at least a couple miles. Thanks a lot!

Currently in PT for hip bursitis and two of the excercises are used. Clam and bridge. I'm glad I watched this. PT hasn't taught me to roll forward during the clam, nor have they stopped me from going as high on possible on the bridge exercise. And PT definitely doesn't care if I'm only hold for maybe 2 seconds.

Found these videos completely unintentionally. I never had hip bursitis until a few years ago when i started having pain when I'd try to go for long walks. Since I have always walked or run long distances, this was devastating. My doctor finally diagnosed the condition but only offered a hip injection. This did work for about 24 hours.
I wish I'd found these exercises years ago. I have started doing weight training several months ago, and that has helped enormously. Fortunately the pain is only when i walk.

I have had Hip Bursitis for over 3 years. I broke my femur and had surgery to put a nail in my femur. Went to PT to learn how to walk again which was wonderful...but... then bursitis plagued me. I was told do Clam shells and bridges but...I now see the method I was using was wrong. With the tweaks you demonstrate I can feel the glutes firing. I think this could change the situation for the better. I have tolerated the toothache pain in my hip for years. This should help me to manage it better. Thank you!!!! I am so glad I found you. :)

Good advice! Helpful to hear what not to do too! I have had both hips replaced twice now and have had trochanteric pain ever since my last operation here in the UK. If kneeling down and I sit back on my heels I get a lot of discomfort in my glutes next day. When a relative recently had a hip replacement she was told to never sit back on heels when kneeling...no-one ever told me that. I was also given elastic bands to use regularly (ouch!) knowing what not to do is very important too!

Could you please post a video of techniques or exercises to specifically address gluteal tendinopathy (GTPS)? Since so many of the exercises you suggest for knee and hip problems focus on increasing glute strength, this seems to only exacerbate my GTPS and increase my hip pain. But I know I must exercise so that my glutes don't atrophy! Thank you Dr, Middaugh for all your excellent, tireless work in helping me with my knee and hip rehabilitation.

I have gone to a lot of physiotherapist in this past 10 years and yes all of them have told me to do clams shells but not the way you have said, and they have also told me to use the booty bands which you have prohibited, so I’m really excited to try your way. I am a fitness trainer myself And I don’t know what wrong I did which flared up the pain in my hips. I’m also keen on watching your video where you are talking about how to walk because right now I am in excruciating pain and just got an ultrasound done yesterday

This is a great educational video. I was speed walking six miles every other day on a country road which included up and down hills, and turns that sloped over for water run off.
I was diagnosed four months ago, prescribed two weeks of low dose steroids, no walking, and of course rest. I did better right away.
Three months after the diagnosis I was given the go ahead to stroll on a flat surface but my groin gets exhausted, weak, and achy within a minute. I lose power and get stinging afterwards so I obviously stopped.
I wasn't happy when you said how long it'll likely take to get better However, I'm' determined. I'll do everything according to your recommendations. You're cheaper than my physical therapist!

I have bursitis on the right side and it hurts a lot. An old knee injury has put my walk out of whack. I checked countless buristis-advice-sites and all of them show young, fit presenters who show you stretch exercises that hurt like hell and I am sure, they would not do those if they had hip bursitis. This is the only site I found that tells you: do not irritate the area even further. The slightly outward feet and walking with the glute muscles tightened helps instantly, although not that easy to do - one tends to forget but the moment one concentrates, the pain lessens immediately. So, thank you! Your exercises help and maybe it will even go away. I have had this before and it took over a year before it subsided. Never had an injection. In my country (Germany) doctors tend to be very cautious about giving cortisone injections or prescribing strong pain medication.
I do a lot of gardening and lifting can be difficult as is climbing up the stairs. It hurts a lot. Maybe a video on how to lift heavy weights and walking up the stairs with hip bursitis would be great.

I'm so excited to try these exercises for my bursitis! I went to Doctor, said nothing could be done except for steroid injections, but I declined as I know that doesn't fix the problem. So I tried these exercises. The clamshell I definitely felt. The Bridge, I felt but the hamstring on right side (where bursitis in hip is located) started spasming. Standing, tightening of the glutes hurts my knee and shin and felt in lower back (same leg with problems). Not sure if I'm doing it right. I think other muscles are engaging and can't isolate just the glutes when standing.
I also have a torn labrum and sit bone tendon tear to hamstring. I can' seem to get better. Thank you for the information provided.

Fast ways to reduce knee pain and swelling so you can quickly get to being able to tolerate sleeping and being on your feet more.
How to gain more motion in your knee joint (if you're missing some motion) without forcing yourself to do aggressive, painful stretches.
Thorough understanding of the root muscle imbalance so that you can apply the information to your specific life situation.
How to get the most out of your replaced knee joint while keeping it healthy for the long-term so that you never have to go back to another knee surgeon.

I over did leg circles and hip openers in Pilates. After several months of doing Pilates, I noticed in early August a nagging left hip/joint pain down the front of my leg. It got so bad that a walking trip I was on I had to stop half way and sit on a bench. BTW, my legs dangled. Did t realize that was the temporary alleviation I needed. No one was able to zero in with this specific problem. I went for stretch therapy combo massage. Felt kind of better but after 2x of myofascia therapy, whoa!!! I felt way out of whack. Then went to chiro, improved but not even close. Found this sight after research. Did the buttocks and the clam shell and the hip raises the way you explained. This past Tuesday was the first day back to my old speeding bullet self. This is a daily routine. Thank you. I shared with my sister who thought she needed hip replacement.

I can't do the exercises that include laying down because I have spinal stenosis ....
BUT I've been doing the standing butt squeezes! I do them whenever I'm standing!!! I no longer have pain when I run my hand (with pressure) passed my hip. None! That's a first in four months. I'm eager to see if I can walk again (eventually back to speed walking).
PLEASE don't skip the exercises that are meticulously explained and shown in this video because of this comment. I'm just saying, I was almost better but went stagnant without improvement until now.
Do the exercises! Make them a part of your life. They don't take a lot of time, they're not hard to do, and they'll keep you from going through this again. 😊

Hey Beulah! We are sorry to hear that you've been dealing with hip bursitis but we are happy we've made it easy to understand what you can do to possibly help with your situation.
The clamshell exercises are harder than it looks so don't give up on them just yet, I would continue to try the modifications that Dr. David explains in the video so that you can increase your chances of feeling it in the right area. So just to reemphasize you might need to roll your torso forward a bit more and stretch the legs out in order to get the glutes engaged.
We hope this helps, hope to hear about your progress in 2 weeks! 🤩

@epmanualphysicaltherapy I was doing very well until last week. I have no clue why I had a flare-up.
On August 27th, I had my appointment and decided to try the injection. Sadly, so far, it's not doing anything. Yesterday I called off from work. I couldn't walk. My doctor gave me these different types of exercises, which caused more pain. For example: bending one knee towards the opposite shoulder while laying down with the other leg straight. Irritated my left outer side of the hip.

Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.
We hope you found this information helpful to you. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!
