  • Spot Grips are a dumbbell spotter system that uses a unique mechanism to release and lock on any size dumbbell to make bench press and other dumbbell movements safer.

As you'll see in the review, it's a great idea and I'm all for anything that will improve the safety in any home gym or commercial gym. The issue is the price, which I detail in the video.

I don't understand all the comments saying "just let go". In my experience the problem is not with dumping the dumbbells, it's with getting them into position in the first place. With flat bench it's not so much of an issue, but with inclined DB presses, or shoulder presses, the limiting factor is getting them into position. If I go light enough that I don't risk shoulder injury (I have injured my shoulder in the past doing exactly this), I can usually bang out 12 to 15 reps. I'd like to be able to go heavy enough that I'm only able to do 6 to 8 reps. For those saying "just get stronger" or "don't ego lift" - these are stupid statements to make that clearly demonstrate that you don't understand the problem. No matter HOW strong you get on an incline bench of overhead press, the weakest part of the movement will always be when the dumbbells are below shoulder height before you get them into position - so "get stronger" is a stupid statement to make. And don't "ego lift" - I'm 35 years old and work out at home. Alone. No ego lifting here - but I'd like to lift weight that puts me into the rep ranges that I'm looking for. So these things absolutely DO address a real problem. The question is, do they work well and are they worth the money? For me, they look awkward and I worry about the dumbbells wanting to tip due to the high center of gravity. Plus $500 is a tough pill to swallow.

VERY expensive yes. Coop glossed over what I see as a major selling point which is getting the DBs set to start the exercise instead of pulling them up to your knees and then kicking them up to your shoulder. He also loaded them in a very weird way. I would just put the DB on the bench or floor and pull the hook down to it instead of placing a heavy dumbbell into a swinging hook.

Those are seat belt straps with a seat belt locking mechanism, its a seat belt with hooks...

that's a ridiculous price, I'd expect these to be more around the $100 mark, its hooks on straps. always these superfluous things get over priced. which is odd as who really needs these

I have had the Spot Grips for a few months now. I took a gamble and bought them and got them shipped all the way out to New Zealand.

Been around for years and years, it's called the Shermworks Free-Spotter system, only the original is MUCH cheaper than what they are selling here.

I know this video is almost 2 years old, but I just received a pair of these and they are fantastic. Being 49, working out alone in my garage, i wasn't comfortable going to failure with 80-100 pounds. these have erased that concern. Not only that, I now don't have to worry about pulling something in my back when I'm getting 80 pound dumbells into decline position (it's happened). fantastic product and you can never put a price on safety

You can go on Craigslist and find a rack, barbell, and some weights for that price or less.

I just ordered a set of Spot Grips. My reasoning was if I can afford to buy expensive Rogue weight plates, I can also afford to buy a set of Spot Grips. $499 is not expensive compared to other gym equipment I own.
