  • Getting dumbbells into position at the start of any pressing variation can be the most challenging part of the exercise.
And that's not even from a lifting perspective...I'm also talking about safety.
This is especially true when doing heavy incline dumbbell presses...the coordination and power it takes to kick dumbbells up to your shoulders for heavy incline presses is tough enough but if you don't get the weight path quite right, it can end in disaster and injury for your shoulders or back.
That's where the Mad Spotter hooks come into play.
These hooks are designed to allow you to start from a position of complete balance and safety so that you can focus on the PRESS, not on trying to figure out how to not get injured while getting weights into position.

I had the same issue with the lack of the wraparound strap. With the wraparound strap I can lift the dumbbell by holding it on the sides and just hook the entire thing over the bar. Can’t do that as easily with the Mad Spotter version.

Yep, exactly. Had to come up with an alternative way to get it up into position.

soon! I've actually got some new bigger equipment I'm putting in and selling off a few old pieces I don't use anymore.

Very interesting gizmos. Even more so when like me, you are using ghetto adjustable dumbells with the pins sticking out of the plates.

Be pretty awkward if you fail and have to drop them, wouldn't it?

That is one thing to be aware of. I did find with the incline press, it's not an issue. You can just bring the dumbbells around and set them on your thighs on end. A little trickier with flat bench and decline, though, quite right. Essentially, you want to still make sure you're lifting under control... if you really want to push the set, better to have a spotter to help the last rep and rerack for sure.

I've been using the Velcro strap version for years since I lift alone. My take on these are: where do you start with bench press or squat? On a rack, correct? As far as approaching your last rep, the hooks can withstand being dropped, with dumbbell however, I wouldn't do that a lot. On a positive note, mentally, it gives you more incentive to complete that last rep.
