Appreciate you guys doing your part to decrease demand for W12. If more YT channels keep this trend going I might actually be able to find a bottle next year.
It's a 12 year BT product. It's going to continue to be hard to get unfortunately. That being said. I crushed a bottle of W12 earlier this year and it lacks character IMO. Sweet and smooth. A great daily drinker with a much too high price tag.
I agree. It's a good whiskey. No way is it worse than Special Reserve in the Bottle. I'd say it's worse than Full Proof and 107 obviously, and comparable (though slightly worse) than CYPB. It would be great for MSRP and if it were available since it's a good 12-year, easy drinking bourbon. But it does lack character complexity, likely due in part to being 90 proof. I've never tried/seen Single Barrel though.
Just saw one at a small store in Claymont, DE... Think it was $150 or $200. They also had Blantons $135, WHTay $200 and a couple other allocated bottles. Surprising little finds right off the highway. Ridge liquors. Owners were real chill and helpful.
" WLW could literally , rain locust on our community and we would still buy it ! " Actually laughing hysterically at that one . My wife is giving me the , what's wrong with you face .... One of my favorite vids lately from you guys ! 🥃
I miss being able to get Pappy 15. My all time favorite. My dad and I used to be able to each get a bottle or 2 per year in the 70-90 $ range. Haven't been able to get one for about 4 years now.
I opened my WLW for my birthday last week. I had 3 pours, it was so good. My new favorite of all time. I will be sad when it is gone, which at this rate, will be soon. I guess I should hold out until NYE for my last pour of it.
Up here in the Midwest it’s at least $300 plus for a bottle. Not worth it. I will take Antique 107 all day long in the Weller line up. Also one of my all time favorite whiskeys.
Seeing as I've only had 107 and none of the others, this was fun to watch. Especially considering the insanity of secondary and the local PA chasers. You could do a Beam tier list, even though Dan would crap on all of them as too nutty.
There's a bottle of Weller single Barrell orange label at my local LQ store here in MD. They want $999 for it. It's still sitting there, been there about a month.
Nicely done, I found this to be pretty similar to my rankings as well (although I never tried Pappy 20 or 23). My only beef is you guys held the price of Weller 12 against it, but seemed to ignore that with the Pappy lineup. The 12 is damn good IMO, if you get it for a fair price
Gotta give you guys credit on these tiered rating videos again. I really liked the early ones, but this one with the "digital" board is a huge improvement. Great job!
Special reserve is a great daily drinker for the price. Last few bottles purchased. 750ml for $18.99 on 11/02/21, 1.75ml for $38 in September 2021. Wouldn’t go much over retail
Not sure your taste buds still work there boys. The Weller 12 is a solid B, the 107 is B+, but the lone single barrel I had was on par with Special Reserve. I've never had Pappy 20 or 23, but the Old Rip was a solid A, as is the Full Proof.
I found a bottle of W12 in 2017 and would completely rate it an E. It was flat, oaky, not much too it. I recently found a 2021 bottle and it has been a different experience. It is much better, with more complexity. I still prefer OWA, but the newer bottle restored my “faith” in the expression… so you know, when I find it again in 5 years I don’t pass on it.
May have been the low bottle that had been opened who-knows-how-long when I got a sample from it, but Antique 107 was superior to the Rip 10 when I did a shoot out..
In 2013 I won a van winkle lot B 12 year at a raffle at a bevmo liquor store. I haven’t opened it to this day. 2013-12 = barreled in 2001 Buffalo trace bought Van Winkle in 2002. A)Do I have stitzel weller juice or no? B)Sell it or drink it?
You should do a video ranking your favorite bottles/shapes and also do a game where one of you is blindfolded, handed a bottle and have to identify what it is
Shawn, we have the same palette. Pappy 15, Weller 107, full proof below it... would put the green and black labels at the bottom, as well..... I can bet you love Larceny BP..... and Early Times BIB?
Pappy 15 is exceptional. I’m not a fan of the 23 though - overwhelming finish of vanilla. I actually like the weller special reserve for the price. Antique 107 was okay but didn’t stand out. Only other one on this list I’ve tried was the weller full proof and it seemed really flat for a lack of a better word. Smooth for the proof but not a lot of flavor and zero finish at all.
I haven't tried any Weller's apart from W12 and WSR, and I can get on board with where WSR is, but the 2021 release of W12 last month I thought was absolutely delicious. Definitely agree that it's terribly hard to find
I have a bottle of van winkle 12 lot b and while I would rate it one tier higher than what you have here, it's definitely let down by the lack of proof. Pappy 15 remains the best bourbon I've ever tried, just really suits my pallet. Perfect amount of age/oak and that sweet soft wheat balance it out just about perfectly. I find aged higher rye bourbons to be a bit much personally, between the oak and the rye spice, it's just a lot.
Once again guys, another great episode!!! Not shocked with how you graded these was surprised on just a couple but after your explanations I totally agree. Great job.
Apropos of nothing, I did my first blind tonight with the Buffalo Trace products I had on hand: Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Elmer T Lee, and Blanton’s and it shook out thusly: 1- Buffalo Trace 2- Blanton’s 3- Elmer T Lee 4- Eagle Rare Which shocked me mostly because I thought I really liked Eagle Rare and I wasn’t particularly impressed with Blanton’s. (FWIW Buffalo Trace and Blanton’s were a close call.) Overall, it was a fun exercise. I see why people like blinds. It shakes up your universe
I was at the BT distillery today and told the tour guide I though Blanton's Original and Buffalo Trace are basically interchangeable. Not sure if he misspoke but he said BT is aged about 8 years (which would be roughly the same as Blanton's). I think Eagle Rare has the most going on but it isn't the easiest sipper of the bunch.
Having had bottles of all of the Pappys and for which I completely agree with your digital rankings, but none of the others, I must think I would agree, if I have any of the others in the future.
Weller single barrel is D or F... I scored one recently for $50.. And its honestly not bad esp at that price, probably would pick makers 46 over just from taste alone. Its not worth the hunt, i scored a special reserve today so going to compare it to that at some point. I imagine a special reserve store pick single barrel has to be better
What happened to Weller 12, I clearly missed something,However I agree I wouldn’t pay over retail for any of these.I leave them on the shelf,There are to many other reasonably price bourbons out there to try or buy !
Cane you guys answer, how does a bottle go from 40 to 1200? IV tried pappy 12, don't get me wrong, it was very smooth and good...but 800to 1200 dollars difference from a Taylor. Just insane to me
I let a bottle of Weller 12 get fairly oxidized and the char pretty much faded away. Tasted very similar to the lot B. Not as rich and no coconut (which is my strongest memory of lot b), but damn good. Didn't like it until it oxidized though. I get that the rankings were based on the standard bottlings, but just wanted to note that store picks definitely add a +/- 1 rank factor. I've definitely had a few OWA picks belong in A rank and a few WFP picks belong in B rank.
I don't know how often you look at comments but I wanted to let you know that the Weller blue label was at a liquor store in NY in the fancy case for..........$500... I LOL'd pretty hard at that but somewhere there will be someone who will pay that...
I still have yet to see anything on this list other than the special reserve in person. It's a $hit show down here in Houston trying to get any of this.
The only thing I disagree with is the fact on the price in which you say to buy the bottles. Some of us only see the bottles at SP and will never be able to try them if we never pay that. I live in a city that is huge in bourbon and it is hard not to pay for these and many more amazing bottles at SP. As always fellas keep up the awesome videos, enjoy watching you both argue between each other on whos more right. Love you all's channel.
You gave W12 a D based on price tag and avalaibility. I can get these any time of the day at the wine store down my street for 50€. I give it an A. The special reserve i an't find anywhere even online.
Oddly I’m exactly where Sean is on these including Weller Single and PVW20. The one bottle I disagree with you both on is the W12. It’s an easy C. You over penalized it for the current price, and it’s way better whiskey than WSR and better than Single Barrel. If your going to penalize for price, you can buy 1 and a half KOK for the price of a PVW15 now, yet you rightfully kept it as an S. Just my opinion, but that’s the only bottle I was off from you.
So if you mix 2 bottles, the mixture of the 2 goes up? Interesting…. I have some Malort and Everclear that I mixed and I would love to see what you think of it.
You're right about the Pappy 15yr, it's the best of the Pappy. The 20yr and 23yr are just more oaky, but not any better. You're wrong about the 107, it's an A.
lmao - this is EXACTLY how i feel about 12yr... im so happy i tasted it at a restaurant first lol. Luckily i got Weller FP, so i'll stick with it :D Now to magically find a WLW lol
I've only had bottles of SR and Antique. Here's another example of the bizarre world of ABC states: SR is a lottery item and Antique is the only Weller that's an "on the shelf" item (meaning half the stores get about 12 bottles a year)... PS - SR is $27, 12year is $40 and Antique/CYPB/FP/SB are all $50 (and every year about 75 MFers get WLW for $100!). PPS - Easily the best bottle flip ever, the non-chalant catch was fcking great.
One of my favorite things you’ve done. Would love to see it mashed up with a blind flight. Obviously that would have been tough with BT, but would be cool for Old Forester or Wild Turkey/Russell’s.

I love 107. With a plate of brisket, it elevated to something magical in a glass. Totally agree about 12.
Pappy15 is incredible. the 20 and 23 to me, are too oaky. and the Weller 107 is def A material. Great video! love these comparisons!
