What are the best alternatives to Weller?

  • Weller...the original wheated bourbon and probably the most popular name in wheated bourbon as well...named after the legend William Larue Weller, the man that is credited with inventing the wheated bourbon in 1849, where wheat replaces rye in the mashbill, producing a
smoother and richer flavor. Since modern bourbon drinkers, especially new bourbon drinkers have found out that Weller bourbon is the same mashbill and bourbon used for crafting the Pappy van Winkle by Bufallo Trace, Weller bourbon, a once mid shelf value priced bourbon has now become hard to find and also in a lot of places, priced way over market value. So if you have tried Weller before in the past are sick and tired of chasing down or paying
secondary market value for this once budget brand, then enjoy my top alternatives to Weller!

The first 2 have become my favourites. Unfortunately Larceny comes in quite pricey in the UK, coming in over $50...after paying less than half that over in The States, I can't justify it, which is a shame because I thought it was a great bourbon! It'll be my first buy when I land next time!
Makers 46, when on offer, is a must buy for me. It's great stuff for a reasonable price.
Definitely want to get a hand on the higher proof Makers after seing that. The idea of the different staves has me hooked!

  • @wiscowhiskeyreview
    @wiscowhiskeyreview 3 года назад

Thanks so much for this video, man. I don't have the money or hookups yet to score much/any Weller at this point, so I'm all for alternatives to it. I actually just had Maker's 46 for the first time 2 or 3 days ago and really liked it. Cask strength is on the agenda and I have yet to crack my Larceny barrel proof but I think I'll try for those instead. Honestly, as long as it's good bourbon and what you like to drink, "the hunt" is just kind of stupid and ruins the whole experience for a lot of people. It drives prices up becomes a game. Great video and suggestions here- cheers! -Jeff R.
PS: 45th Parallel Distillery out of New Richmond, WI makes a wheated whiskey called "W". It's 4 years old, just south of 100 proof but only available in WI, IL, MI and MN as far as I know. I have yet to try it but have heard good things about it and wanted to drop that in the convo!

I was in Kentucky at the time of the 2013 "heist". That wasn't a publicity ploy. The state police investigation was huge regarding this. People were jailed. I would disagree with you on that catapulting the value and popularity of the PVW line. PVW was the only "allocated" bottle that was ever hard to find unless you went to Liquor Barn and got in line at 4AM of the release day.

I don't like Weller but oddly I have 4 bottles of SR along with a 12 year and the coveted CYPB all sealed. I got the the Srs for about $25 bucks and the 12yr and CYPB at retail. I think the CYPB was around $50 and the 12 was $40. All within the last year. I got the 12 and CYPB from a promotion through a store. I got beat out on other things I actually wanted and "settled" for what I could get.

I'm just glad that my wife didn't care for the only bottle of Weller I've ever been able to buy (SR), and instead is a big fan of Larceny.

Old Elk and Oak & Eden Wheat are pretty good as well. Old Elk has a wheat bourbon and a straight wheat whisky...

We need more wheater distillers so Weller fades into the background since they aren’t on the shelf most the time anyways.

Buy Makers picks, and cask strength variants. They are better

@@TrashDiscourse Maybe better but twice to 3 times the price. I only pay 22.99 a bottle for Weller.

Theres plenty...Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Old Forester 1920, Old Ezra 7 year barrel strength, stagg jr.

The Mash and Drum Any you would highlight that have the sweet peanut Bookers flavor, but aren’t smoky or overly oak forward?

The Mash and Drum gotcha, we still have some of it on the shelves in NH so i was curious and 48% abv was intriguing, but 4 yrs is a touch young. Maybe ill try the 9 or 10 yo high rye barrel proof instead lol

If they would make it so much accessible to FL and all states they’d make crazy money. That’s the disappointing fact unless you’re in Kentucky then and maybe you can get a hold of any of these at decent price.
