I made this recipe yesterday. My neighbor had given me a set of four 16.9 oz mugs and I already have a ton of mugs, so I decided to fill the mugs with the dishsoap. They will take forever to use up! Love this recipe! Everyone that I’ve shared with also love how well it works:) the lemon scent was amazing when first made but now nobody can smell it. Is this normal? I used 14 grams eo.
Ellen, this is lovely! Thank you so much for the inspiration to finally make up a batch of these for gifts- I've been intimidated to use Citric Acid in soap but a non body bar seems like the perfect application to dip my toes into it! Where I am here in the Upper Midwest has VERY hard water so I've always heard that soap with citric acid is the best and I'm excited to see. My favourite soap calculator, Soapee, has recently added the citric acid adjustment as an option so it makes it even easier. I think I'm going to do a Lemon & Mint essential oil blend for my bars, I have a spray cleaner from Target that uses that blend to scent it and it smells divine ☺

I’m assuming it’s universal but I want to make sure. I want to start making soap and I’m trying to do some research. Your videos are literally the best!! Thank you for explaining every step so well!
Hi Ellen. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Very pleasant and claming! Thank you. Soap making is a hobby for me. Started with researching for my son's skin ailments. Now it's to keep my aging skin looking young. Plus, making Christmas gifts is cheaper than buying them. That being said, I've made several different recipes of solid dish soaps that include citric acid from other YT videos. It's great, but after air drying dishes, there's always water spots. I live just north of Atlanta, GA on city water so I really don't think hard water is the issue. Do you have water spots after air drying dishes?
@@EllenRuthSoap That could be it. Normally I rinse using cool tap water. I'll try rinsing with hot water and let you know if that solves the water spots issue. Many thanks!
@EllenRuthSoap I went to the SoapCalc website and entered the numbers into the calculator. It calculated the amount. Nothing jumped out to me. What should I look for to know if the recipe is "lye-heavy"? This is only my 2nd time making soap (first time was a couple days ago when I made your laundry powder). Thank you!
Great recipe! Do you like this better than the coconut noodles in your old recipe? I bought the coconut noodle dish soap from you and it worked very well. I have not tried your new recipe (this one) bar yet. Do you have a good dishwasher recipe?
It is Friday night, and I am ready to party with this new recipe! 🎉 Thank you, Ellen! I am very intrigued at the addition of stearic acid to harden the bar. Will this also work with a body bar? I am formulating a horse shampoo bar that is really similar to your dish bar recipe , just superfatted with argan oil for shine, and although it starts out hard, it is soggy by the time my horse is clean! Do you have any thoughts on this 🤔? Thanks, again!
@@EllenRuthSoapIf you have a moment, could you help me figure out how to keep the stearic acid from re-solidifying as the batter temperature drops? I ended up with tiny white spots as I blended it. Should I be soaping at a higher than normal temperature when using stearic acid? The temp had dropped to about 100°F by the time it was ready to pour. Any advice would be very gratefully received.
Thank you Ellen another amazing video I love watching your videos ❤ Question, if you put them in smaller moulds to fit in a dishwasher would it be work ? or would it be to hard. Thank you ❤
I have really sensitive skin, particularity on my hands, (history of severe eczema), but also using gloves is not practical nor does it keep the water off my hands. I have learned that the only liquid soap to date that actually helps my hands heal, are ones that have aloe Vera in them. Is there a way to add the aloe to this hard bar soap?
Hi Ellen 🌺 I used coconut oil from Costco and when I melt the stearic acid with the coconut nut oil in the microwave my solution was grainy and on your video after you melted the coconut oil with the stearic acid your solution seem to be very clear … is it my oil ? Thank you very much for your help ❤
I pulse my oil in the microwave about 1 min just to melt my coconut oil just for not loose the property of the oil maybe next time I will put in more time 😊 thank you Ellen and this morning my soaps are very nice 😀
Hi, I love this recipe and have made it three times with success, but I made it again yesterday and my batch seized before I could get it into the molds. What temperature should I bring the oils and lye water to? Maybe it’s because of a different brand of lemon EO?
Both tallow and lard make fantastic soap. If you change any of the oils, you'll need to run the numbers thru soap calc and make sure your lye ratio is correct.
Just a thought…would these bars be the answer to cleaning the dishes et al from making CP soap? I always seem to struggle with fully removing the greasy feel.
Hi Ellen, I was looking at the soapcalc recipe you showed in this video & the water is listed as 120.6 gm., however your recipe below and in your video you state you add 142 gm. water. I'm confused as to why the different water amount? Thanks! I want to make this recipe.
@@EllenRuthSoapThanks! I made this for my use this morning. Your recommended H20 amt. produced a wonderfully behaved batch. Can't wait to use this in 6 wks.!
hello Ellen, Can i replace stearic acid for acid citric or something else that make it the same as your wonder soap? oh wonderful thank u very much, greeting from Belgium🙏🏻❤😘
No, stearic and citric acid are completey different. If you change any of the ingredients, be sure to run the numbers thru a soap calc and make sure your lye ratio is correct.
Ohh nooo... I just made my second batch (first batch went perfectly and is curing until July 28).. I just realized I forgot to add the citric and stearic acids, is this batch a goner or just not as cleansing or hard?
@@EllenRuthSoap Thank you for such a quick response! I just googled how to correct for a lye-heavy batch and I understand where to go from here. I appreciate you!
Hi ! I was wondering why the amount of water actually used (142 g) is different from the soapcalc screenshot (120 g) at the begenning of the video ? So i'm confused about the recipe. Did I miss something ? Is anyone can help me please ? Thank you 🙂
Greetings, I am interested in how the PH can be lowered in soaps with a cold process. I'm using google translate so I apologize for the clumsy words. Greetings from Croatia
I put it in this formulation to help it last longer and stay hard even while wet... I suggest trying some small batches and seeing if you can find a formula you like.
@@EllenRuthSoap so far this recipe minus the stearic acid is phenomenal. (It did start to crack a little while making and I had to pop them in the fridge.) Great lather and works incredible on the dishes! Thank you for this!

Great recipe! Do you like this better than the coconut noodles in your old recipe? I bought the coconut noodle dish soap from you and it worked very well. I have not tried your new recipe (this one) bar yet. Do you have a good dishwasher recipe?
I really like this formula❣️ And, I don't have a dishwasher soap yet...
Wow, I've never thought about a horse shampoo... That's so cool❣️ I do think factoring in a bit of stearic would make for a hard bar..
@@EllenRuthSoap Thanks a million! Have a great weekend!
Namaste Ellen,do you have any body bar recipe video with citric acid too? Or how much fo u recommend citric acid for body bar?
I'll be doing a body bar with citric acid in the future. I use it at 2%
@@EllenRuthSoap please share the making video plus the recipe also with us if possible
Hi ellen! What do you end up doing with all of your soap shavings you peel off in the bucket?
I either rebatch or make confetti soap 💕
@@EllenRuthSoap ooo confetti soap how cute!
Thank you Ellen another amazing video I love watching your videos ❤
Question, if you put them in smaller moulds to fit in a dishwasher would it be work ? or would it be to hard.
Thank you ❤
This would not make a good dishwasher soap, it's too hard and the lather might overflow.
Yes, you can replace all the water wiht aloe vera juice👍 Also, you could increase the super fat to add a touch of moisture, maybe up to 5%
This is fantastic thank you so much .for this recipe and the scientific explanation ❤
My pleasure 😊💛
Hi Ellen 🌺 I used coconut oil from Costco and when I melt the stearic acid with the coconut nut oil in the microwave my solution was grainy and on your video after you melted the coconut oil with the stearic acid your solution seem to be very clear … is it my oil ? Thank you very much for your help ❤
Stearic acid has a very high melting point, I suspect that you'll need to melt a bit longer to get it all..?
I pulse my oil in the microwave about 1 min just to melt my coconut oil just for not loose the property of the oil maybe next time I will put in more time 😊 thank you Ellen and this morning my soaps are very nice 😀
Hi, I love this recipe and have made it three times with success, but I made it again yesterday and my batch seized before I could get it into the molds. What temperature should I bring the oils and lye water to? Maybe it’s because of a different brand of lemon EO?
I like to soap around 80-90 degrees... I would suspect the EO.
@@EllenRuthSoap thanks for your reply…….I’ll let you know how my next batch goes…making some with my daughter in May.
Can this soap bar be used for laundry aswell?
I have used it as a stain stick👍
I really want to make this dish soap but i have a lot pf tallow and lard from our farm, do you think you can substitute some of these for that
Both tallow and lard make fantastic soap. If you change any of the oils, you'll need to run the numbers thru soap calc and make sure your lye ratio is correct.
Thank you, I tried that i got the hardness up to 67 with adding tallow but the cleansing was just at 37, any suggestions
Just a thought…would these bars be the answer to cleaning the dishes et al from making CP soap? I always seem to struggle with fully removing the greasy feel.
Yes they would. I like to wipe my CP dishes out well with paper towels, then rinse with super hot water before washing.
Hi from Germany, like your videos ❤😊
Hi Ellen, I was looking at the soapcalc recipe you showed in this video & the water is listed as 120.6 gm., however your recipe below and in your video you state you add 142 gm. water. I'm confused as to why the different water amount? Thanks! I want to make this recipe.
Either water amount is good, I didn't do a water discount to keep things slow moving and not trace too fast.
@@EllenRuthSoapThanks! I made this for my use this morning. Your recommended H20 amt. produced a wonderfully behaved batch. Can't wait to use this in 6 wks.!
Did you use a folded lemon EO? If not, does the fragrance have staying power in the soap?
I find the lemon scent is lasting, and really blooms when you're using the soap.
Does it require curing period like regular cp soaps??
Thankyou
Yes👍
Hello..yes for me it did sound complicated as someone whom has never made soap. I’m wondering if this can be made into dishwasher tabs?
Sorry about the complication 🤣. No, this formula wouldn’t be good in a dishwasher.
hello Ellen, Can i replace stearic acid for acid citric or something else that make it the same as your wonder soap? oh wonderful thank u very much, greeting from Belgium🙏🏻❤😘
No, stearic and citric acid are completey different. If you change any of the ingredients, be sure to run the numbers thru a soap calc and make sure your lye ratio is correct.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
can we use recycled sun flower oil in some proportion in this recipe?
If you change any of the oils, you'll need to run the numbers thru soap calc.
Instead of olive oil shall we add palm/ ricebran oil.
If you change any of the oils, you’ll need to run the numbers thru soap calc to make sure you’re lye ratio is correct.
For the coconut oil, can it be a liquid oil or hard? I have had both, but not sure if it makes a difference for this recipe. thx.
You’ll want to use the solid coconut oil 👍
Hello, is the recipe gonna get affected if I changed the oils? I havereally sensitive skin. If so, what do you recommend?
is apricot oil ok?
Yes, different oils have different sap values, so just be sure to run the numbers thru a soap calc.
Will other citrus essential oils do the same thing as the lemon?
I do think other citrus essential oils have the same greasy cutting as lemon. I know orange is also great👍
Awesome. Thank you so much. @@EllenRuthSoap
Ohh nooo... I just made my second batch (first batch went perfectly and is curing until July 28).. I just realized I forgot to add the citric and stearic acids, is this batch a goner or just not as cleansing or hard?
I suggest doing a pH test on the soap, it may be lye heavy without the citric acid..
Thank you 🙂
I'm not sure why I went higher on the water, but both volumes will work👍
Thank you Ellen for your answer 😁. I’m ready to make it straight away 🤩🤩🧼🫧. Keep going on your good mood and sharing your knowledge 💓
Greetings, I am interested in how the PH can be lowered in soaps with a cold process. I'm using google translate so I apologize for the clumsy words. Greetings from Croatia
I have not worked with lowering the pH in CP soaps, so I can't really speak to that.?.
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you for the answer 🙂
Gracias!!❤☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
I dont use stearic acid in any if my soaps. Do you think this recipe would hold up without it?
I put it in this formulation to help it last longer and stay hard even while wet... I suggest trying some small batches and seeing if you can find a formula you like.
@@EllenRuthSoap so far this recipe minus the stearic acid is phenomenal. (It did start to crack a little while making and I had to pop them in the fridge.) Great lather and works incredible on the dishes! Thank you for this!
Can you make this without scent?
Yes👍
Can I omit using steric acid
That would change the recipe, so you'll need to run the numbers thru soap calc to make sure your lye ratio is correct.
Ok newby here. Do you sell your soaps too. I’d like to try sone before going to the work of making. I’m disabled so I don’t want to waste the time I have active. Lol.
Yes👍 ellenruthsoap.com
I've tried using stearic acid in soap but the melt point is so high that my oils have to be very hot to keep it in solution. You didn't seem to have a problem with it.
They do have a high melting point, and I just keep melting until they are fully melted... Makes for a nice hard bar💛
@@EllenRuthSoap ok and looking forward to trying this recipe you've so kindly shared!
I’m guessing this does not need to go through a gel phase?
No, I don't try to force gel phase on little molds, and they came out great💕
@@EllenRuthSoap I made them , love them thanks so much!!
@@EllenRuthSoap I bet this would be a really good bar of soap for making laundry soap as well ! It works that good , I only use liquid soap for soaking now , and can get away with just soaking in hot water too , I will probably use this recipe for the rest of my life and wanted to tell you thanks again 💙💙💙
Do you have this recipe with percentage?
WSP has a great % calculator.
