    I have been binge-watching your videos for the past couple of days. My grandmother is in the hospital so while I am sitting with her in her room we have been watching your videos. My grandmother taught me how to make soap from saved bacon fat and beef fat from hamburger in 2020. She taught me how to clean it. She has a recipe from my great-grandmother on how to make lye, but I suggested that we use my lye from Bramble Berry. She says she wishes she had all the fragrances like today when she was a little girl.

      That is so awesome!!! I believe it's so important to share and pass down our heritage. I started making soap 5 years ago with my mom, then with my daughter, and my granddaughter helped with the cutting and drying. I love that we've shared this with 4 generations!!!
      Would you be willing to share your great-grandmother's receipe for lye? Also how do you clean the meat grease to use?

    • @ashley-cz1sl
      @ashley-cz1sl Год назад +3

      @@marydunnington8001 There are two different ways that my great-grandmother made lye. The main thing is it has to be with ashes from HARD wood. One of the ways is to collect all the ashes and put them in a 5-gallon bucket and cover them with water and then let it sit 8-12 weeks. I have used PH strips to test it. Strain it and put it in a glass container for storage. When making soap you do not have to add any water when it comes to the lye solution because it's already added. She also has a way to boil it over an open fire to crystalize it but I have not tried that yet. I have young kids and don't want them around the fire pit while doing that.

    • @ashley-cz1sl
      @ashley-cz1sl Год назад +2

      @@marydunnington8001 Oh yeah I forgot my grandmother says to let the soap sit a little longer if you are doing cold process soap, but we have made it on the stove and in the crock pot. The hot process soap and it's worked out even better.

    I'm excited to see you making this discovery. I hope you'll stick with it. I think you'll find it's worth the effort. Quite a while ago, I decided I didn't want to use palm oil in my soaps, so I switched to tallow, lard, or a combination of tallow and lard. Great decision. Despite the high saturated fats, my soap is always slow to trace, and I love the way the soap performs much more than I liked palm. It takes a little while for the soaps to harden up, as you discovered, but I do end up with nice hard bars in the end. Thanks for sharing your experiment with us. I love your enthusiasm.

    Thank you for this easy to follow recipe. I want to try it for my first attempt at soap making. I just have some questions about the additives. What are the purposes and benefits of the clay, the colloidal oats, the activated charcoal, the sugar, and the silk? Also, since the purpose of making soap is to avoid chemical exposure, could you comment on the health effects of the fragrances.

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  Месяц назад

      Have fun soaping! The clay, oats & charcoal all have different skin benefits, I suggest a google search for a full list.. The sugar is a lather booster, and the silk gives the lather a "silky" feel that is so nice. All additves are extra, and you'll still get a fabulous soap without them.. As far as fragrance goes I only use Phthalate & paraben free ones, so I do feel comfortable using them. Or you can stick with essential oils only.

      I have used goat milk in my tallow soaps. The lye solution turns orange, but the finished bars are white. I never used TD in my soaps. As long as the FO doesn't discolor, the bars are bright white

    Hey Ellen! I made a version of this soap with a few changes, I upped tallow to 50%, dropped coconut and olive oil to 22.5% and added castor at 5% keeping the 6% superfat. I lather tested at day 4 like you showed and although super bubbly and creamy, it left my hands very dry. Did you experience this? Is it because it hasnt fully cured? Ive read some things that say the coconut is too high but others that dont. With your coconut being even higher, I assume youd have a similar first test batch that Im hoping cured more conditioning.

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  Год назад

      My first thought is, did you run the changes thru soap calc? It might have changed the lye concentration. And I like to super fat at 5-6%, that really helps with any dryness feel.

    • @TheEveryMinuteMom
      @TheEveryMinuteMom Год назад

      I did and it adjusted the lye concentration. I also did sf at 6%. Im reading the dryness could be because the bar is so new and not fully cured? Did yours feel try when you batch tested for the video? Did it fix after curing time?

    👋🏻 been kicking around the idea of using tallow in my skincare and I was in fact thinking of using it in soap. When you say homestead style are you saying you can create a hardened bar w/o the need for lye as the tallow has the natural salts?
    I am a bit afraid of lye so really looking for options not using it if possible.
