Regarding collection of pumice stone from the beach
My understanding of the law in Queensland is that it is permitted to collect small amounts of material from public beaches (I do not remove shells though), however it is strictly prohibited to remove any material whatsoever from a National Park anywhere in Australia. It was brought to my attention while editing this video that in some jurisdictions in Australia it is strictly prohibited to remove any items from the natural environment in any location (National Park or otherwise). In retrospect, I may not have collected the pumice stone from the beach this day, however I have been visiting this island since early childhood, it is a very special place for me (that feels like home), and I have to admit I did not think about it at the time. I will be more careful about this in future. I decided it was still worth sharing the video to demonstrate how pumice stone can be used in a soap recipe.

I am a novice soap maker from NYC. I have been making soap for about 3 years now and I often come back to your videos as a grounding tool because you really drive simplicity and it helps to remind me that we have resources everywhere! and it does not have to be complicated.
Thank you Stephanie, so lovely to hear that from you in NYC.
Hi prsp i have a idea to make world best nature's miracle soaps internationally if you have little experience soooo.
Hi folks, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did! Make sure you check out the description box below the video for _all_ the information, including link to the written recipe and my suggested plant based and palm free alternative recipes for pumice soap. Happy making! 🤗
I loved it thanks. I had never thought of putting this in soap.
Hi Elly! it's so good to see you back, thanks for a great video😊 I want to make a pumice soap, it looks great!
Thanks! Great to be back for sure :)
Ours in the U S A was called LAVA SOAP which they don’t make it anymore. I love making it for my son’s there a diesel mechanic. They are so perfect for the nasty grease and oils that they come in contact with. 😊
Yes I enjoyed it. Your page is super educational. Please do a video on how to make soap base from scratch. Thank you.
How nice to go to the beach to obtain soap making supplies.
It is a privilege indeed.
A bar of Solvol soap lasts us for years, had no idea they stopped making it 😮 Would of found out when we tried to buy more 😂 Thank you so much for sharing a recipe to make our own. The olive soap moulds are lovely too.
Thanks Annette, there is a new soap you can get at Repco called Gritts Mitts that seems similar. But you know me, I love homemade!
Isn't it the same as Lava in America? The label looks exactly the same.
As usual your zen soap making soothes my sourdough soul Elly. It's handy having a geologist consultant who also makes sourdough bread btw 😊
Mention of Solvol gave me full on "Daddy memories". We always had Solvol in the laundry and my father used it routinely because he was forever fixing something, building something or inventing something. Even as a little tacker I remember using it after gardening - I planted my first garden at 7, with rhubarb and pansies. Good memories. Thanks for the wonderful visit to the Quandamooka people's Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island). It is beautiful, plus you saw whales! You can't get better than that 🏝️ 🙏🏻
Thank you Tosca 🙏
This is such a beautiful soap, that natural soft grey colour and no doubt that texture too, it's just beautiful. You have all the best videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Oh, thank you so much :)
It’s like USA’s Lava. So neat! What a beautiful country you live it! 💜 I hope to visit someday. 😊
How are you doing today? I'm just getting to your video I've been busy. I just want to say when I'm watching you is like I'm going on a journey and I love the journey even though I'm in the United States and you are in Australia I feel like I'm a part of Australia watching you. I love to hear your soothing voice and the way you explain things are crystal clear on my soap journey you have been so detrimental to everything that I do. You make me challenge myself and to try new things I am so happy and grateful that I have you in my life your channel is a blessing so continue taking me on your journey of soap making.
Oh my goodness, thank you! You've made my day :)
Awesome soap Elle ! Thanks for taking us on your little trip to get the Pumice. Your country’s landscape is so awesome. Video is extra great today. Thank you ! We have “ Lava soap “here in America. It works great on greasy hands. Your Olive soap mold was super cute. Take care Our Aussie friend:)
Thank you for your kind words Karin, I'm so glad you loved this! This was a very special one I thought :)
I am just across the bay from there ,on Macleay . This is a very informative recipe ! 🙏
Thank you so much! Glad it helps. :)
Beautiful place you have there!! Lovely, sunny beach!
Thanks Karen, it's my favourite place in the world!
Yay so beautiful. I just love how your personality comes out in each video! And you used my favourite ingredient Tallow!!! I usually let the tallow cool to 35degrees and the lye solution as cool as I can get it, so that I don't have to worry about it seizing - it has happened in the past with volcanic results - no pun intended with your use of pumice. :). I love the lather from a tallow soap too, tight and white bubbles! Sheep Tallow behaves differently, you want that to be at 60degrees or above or it re-solidifies when you add the lye - I have made many mistakes on this one too. Great video and so great to see the beach, I have been hanging out for summer! - been such a long and cold, wet winter here in the south.
Oh thanks Delizia! I'm so glad you enjoyed this. And thank you for your tallow tips! I didn't know you could take the temps so low for beef tallow. I thought I'd keep them a bit warmer, I'm always scared of false tracing when I use lots of saturated fats. I hope things warm up for you soon, and you get a holiday! It just got really hot here in the last couple of days. Make sure you let me know if you ever come up this way and we can catch up :)
They are beautiful and I LOVE that your foraged your own stones to make it!!
Thanks Bridget, glad you enjoyed it.
KITTY!!! Your snake plants on your deck are so luscious. How lucky are you to live in such a beautiful part of the globe?!
Those bars look so smooth. Thank you again for sharing so freely. I think I’ll save this recipe for my sons for next year’s Christmas gifts.
Thanks Pinkie. Yes, I am very fortunate!
Love the molds.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! I’ve made it once and am getting ready to make it a second time-it works great for cleaning up after mechanic work (as my husband and sons have done) and for my part I love it for washing dirty garden hands. I followed the recipe for the most part but added finely ground walnut shell also, to make it extra exfoliating.
Glad you liked it!!
Stunning thank you 😊
Yay! I’ve been “patiently” waiting for this video. So happy to see you again! Thanks for sharing! 💜
Thank you Ellie! Yes it's taken me longer than expected to get to this. Good to be back though!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking so good to have you back. I’m in the middle of getting ready to launch my business and I’ve been so nervous but watching your channel calms me down and helps me be confident. 💜 Happy to see you back.
Thanks Ellie, yes it's great to be back! Good for you, take it easy :)
Awesome to find Aussie. Hi from Tasmania. I'm trying to make soap, so please find you. thankyou xxxx

lot of fun to watch this . love the old time charm of soap. thanks
Thanks Terrie, me too.
I just ordered some ground pumice so this video is perfect timing! I’ve never made pumice soap but I’m excited now 😊
Love this and that finished color is beautiful! Thanks, Elly.
Thanks Sue, yes I agree, it's subtle but beautiful.
Thank you for this Elly!! Just adore you.
Thank you so much :)
Beautiful Scenery ❤ thanks so much 4 sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Such an enjoyable video thanks Elly.
Thanks Stephanie :)
Love this Elly, I didn't know pumice could be a wonderful ingredient to make exfoliating soap❤️
Your amazing Elly. Can’t wait to try it. They looked fantastic ❤Ps I remember using solvo & the texture was so noval for a soap.
Love watching your videos. Thanks
You're welcome, thank you!
Beautiful video and great soap! Thank you for sharing.
Wow I learned something new today! Great video and thanks for sharing. 💜
Thank you :)
I really enjoyed this video! You are amazing, thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thank you Carolyn, so glad you enjoyed it.
what a lovely video! thank you for sharing, I will try this.
Thank you! Have fun.
Hello Elly, this a beautiful video from start to finish and your soap does look amazing. Thank you for all the links you posted, especially the pumice one! I will definitely make this when I am able, but with an alternative to using tallow. There are 3 males in my immediate family who have active mechanical/adventure/lifestyle habits! Kevin - definitely the gorgeous star intruder🐾🥰
Thanks Marion, sounds like this will be handy for you! I've been using my test bar today, it really does feel good when the pumice is nice and fine! Perfect for your fellows I'd say :)
Good job
This soap looks so creamy. I love the colour. Cant wait to try it! 😋
It's so good!
I wanna thank you for sharing this recipe. Here in Portugal we don’t see those stones frequentou with that dizer, but we can find negar the ocean bits of some. In Portugal the sand is very fine and i think i am going to use or sand from a Beavers that is very fine or Saibro, that is similar to sand but it is orange and used to make bricks to do fireplaces, etc.
Bravo! Maravilhosa, receita e sua forma também! Gratidão. Vc me inspira sempre!💝
thank you so much to making pumice sope that was wonderful ahmad from canada
Hi Ella. Love the scenery. I learned to make soap from you
Thank you :)
You have my undying (!!🥰) admiration not so much for your excellent recipes and videos, but for climbing back all those stairs that led you to the beach!!!!! Have fun people!!!
Thanks Despina :)
My local supermarkets still sell Solvol, but this looks much better!
That's cool! Thanks :)
Great for those blokey blokes ;) Love all your videos and ideas.
Haha, yes! And those practical gals, and everyone in between!
Hello i just tried your receip and i love it ! it's always a plesure to follow you :) merci pour tout !

Hi Elly
This video put a big 😀 on my face.
Love the soap thank u for sharing
The receipes.
Can't wait to give it a go

Oh thanks Paulinee! Glad you enjoyed this :)
So beautiful Elly!!!! I really love it! I love your channel! I have a soap channel too! I live in Miami-FL but my first language is Portuguese so I produce my videos in Portuguese ( it’s easier for me) 😊I’ve being soaping for 7 years now and I’m sure I have lots to learn with you!! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! ❤
That's so wonderful! Thank you :)
Fantastic Elly loved the intro too I’m sure those overseas enjoyed it as much as me.
Oh thanks, yes I loved putting that bit in. Have been saving it since the trip :)
Beautiful video 😍 and beautiful soap 😍
Thank you! Cheers!
I really enjoyed watching your video. Pumice is a wonderful addition to the soap, after using Solvo for years, your bars will be bliss on the skin. Thank you for sharing your love of soaping. 😍 😍
Thank you Barbara, I'm so pleased you enjoyed this.
oh I miss solvol, it's the only thing that gets plant sap especially gum off your skin.
Had a quick look and apparently Solvol bars are going for 88$ a bar on ebay!
Hej, tarafiłaś w moje serce :) ostatnio myślałem o mydle z pumeksem i doczekałem się wspaniałej receptury na mydło z pilingiem. Brawo :) i Love You :) Z wielkim zainteresowaniem ogladam Twoje filmy i pilnie się uczę.
Pozdrawiam. Krzysztof - Chris z Polski :))
Dziękuję bardzo Chris! Tak się cieszę, że ci się podobało. Bardzo się cieszę też z Tłumacza Google! Trzymaj się ciepło :)
Thanks for all the info Elly🙂. I always make a batch of pumice soap for my mechanic when I go. Next time I will grind it down a bit more like you did as I think mine is a bit scratchy
Ah, great to hear Leisa. Yes it's no fun when it's too scratchy. Even tough hands need good care :)
Such a great video Elly, it was kinda like a Vlog video. Very nice views at the beginning, and Kevin made an appearance, How cute is Mr. Kevin! Looks like awesome soap, thanks for the cool adventure! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you *so* much George! I really appreciate your feedback and that you loved this as much as I do! It was such a wonderful video to make.
I can’t wait to make a batch myself, childhood memories
Thanks for showing how easy it is to grind your own pumice. I wondered if I could do it myself as I'm walking by pumice stones everyday on the beach but it is a relatively expensive ingredient to buy.
I actually found a few bars of solvol in the laundry cupboard recently so I can easily compare the result 😊
Just make sure it's legal and appropriate to collect the stones from the beach in your area Kate. Would be good to compare recipes for sure!
Living in Australia I remember the TV add ‘wash your hands Geoffrey, with the Solvol Geoffrey’….lol. Thanks for sharing this Elly. I remember Solvol and the smell and often my sister and I would use Dad’s soap and hands were always clean and felt smooth. I will be making some soon. ❤️🇦🇺
That's great Andrea, thanks for commenting. I never saw that ad, but remember the soap very well! My nana always had it.
Well this is one I must try..let us know your dad’s thoughts about the soap. My husband is very good at getting greasy hands! 😊
Two more weeks for my first coffee soap to be cured..thank you Elly!! ❤
Oh my gosh just saw a television ad from 1961 for Solvol..busy hands need Solvol..and yep I sang it!! 😂
Oh yeah I saw that too! Cute jingle. So funny to hear the old Aussie accents. I think your husband will be a good test for this recipe too! The soap itself is brilliant, nice and hard and will last for ages, getting the right amount of pumice in is the trick.
I want to know your dad's thoughts about the soap! please... Wonderful recipe, I'll try!! Greetings from Guatemala!

"stay slow because I didn't know how it was going to go with adding the -parmesan- and I did not want...." In the CCs I do hope this means pumice Stone. LOVE YOUR CONTENT ELLY.
Haha, gotta love the auto-gen CCs, right? I remember about 10 yrs ago it was popular for youtubers to upload a sketch, take the auto-gen CCs and redo the sketch with that script, rinse & repeat several times. Hilarious video version of "telephone game" ensues. 🤣
Oh that's funny! I did make a lot of corrections in the captions, but obviously missed that one!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you for making YT CCs better. I watch a lot of creators and I watch on CC mainly because it helps me concentrate on one thing at a time. The auto translate sure is a funny thing sometimes. 💛💛💛
Thanks Elly, I have been waiting for this and have now ordered some Pumice .... (cant find it here).. thank you
Oh that's great! Have fun making it :)
Content suggestion Elly: a video on clean-up after the soap creation. What do you use to clean all the dishes and pans that have lye solution, unsaponified raw soap, EOs, oils, etc. Is it simply toss it all in the dishwasher and go?
Some of us don't have redundant sets of pots and dishes to be only used for soaping. MY suggestion for a future video.
Glad you found my video on this topic :)
Hey Elly, I just went to Hervey Bay,
Guess what I found, pumice stone.
I can now make this soap, the way u
Did, Al natural.
I was stoked, when i found it.
I've been wanting to since u released,
Your fantastic video.
I'm using lard. I find it makes
Fantastic face creams. Not fatty
On the skin. Just cremey feel
Love what u do.
Wonderful! I love the bay. Have fun :)
Hi Elly! They sell similar soap here for mechanics, with pumice, but the soap itself is just murder on your skin. This looks much more pleasant. :) Great video as always!
Thanks Michael, ooh that's interesting! USA? This one is nice and smooth. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Yes, US. Was a mechanic in my youth and we used a (fairly new at the time) product called Fast Orange hand cleaner. It is still sold today, though hopefully with a milder formula. I'd post up a link but I don't want to anger the google gods. Had a wonderful citrus smell, and did a fantastic job, but at the end of the day one's skin would feel very dry. Uncomfortably so if left untreated.
Oh dear, yes that sounds a bit rough. This would be a milder alternative I'm sure.
Wow!! You're amazing!! For being your first time You're so lucky living in beautiful Australia and able to get this stones. Truly enjoyed your video and love loved the recipe,!! They came out so beautiful Very nice!! Love it 😍. Thanks so much for sharing God bless and enjoy your weekend 🙏🏾🥰🌺🦋
P.S. Do you sell this sops by any chance. I would love to purchase. Thanks 🙏🏾
Thank you :) No, I don't sell my soap. Just for us, friends, family and youtube!
In the U.S. with have Lava Soap pumice soap. It's been around forever. You can get it online.
Brilliant! Thanks you for this!! I am a HUGE fan of exfoliating ingredients and soap! Yay!
You said you could have added a bit more pumice into this 900g batch. How much more would you add next time?
Well, I've been using my test bar today, and actually I think it's pretty good! Maybe another half a cup or so?
Hello! I love all of your ideas on your channel! I don’t have pumice where I live. Could I use walnut hulls ground up? Would this be similar to pumice in the soap? Thank you for all you share. It really is awesome!!!!
I'm not sure Jen, I've never used walnut hulls. I like the sound of it though, as long as you can get them fine so they're not scratchy!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thanks Elly! I can buy them from a soapmaking supply store and they come pre-ground very fine. I just may try them out! Thanks for the excellent idea!
Greatly explained I have a doubt mam about citric acid how should I calculate how much citric acid should we add on soap recipe generally if you explain a separate video it will be useful mam. Have a great weekend. Lots of love from India ❤️
Thank you, yes I will do a video on that soon :)
Hello sister Elly's do have online classes l would like to join as soon as possible.looking forward to hearing from you we are proud of you keep that good heart of sharing thanks
Not quite, but I do have a supporter group which has lots of individual help! www.buymeacoffee.com/ellyseveryday/membership
mortar and pesshel 😂 you sound so sweet Elly ❤
😂
Hi, Elly! Love your videos. Do you have a source for the jars that you use when weighing your essential oils? Or do you simply repurpose small jars from the grocery? Curious. Thanks.
Hi Sue, they are just little jars I found somewhere. I can't even remember where they came from now! Certainly weren't new. Perhaps a charity shop? Little repurposed jars would be perfect.
I'm planning on making this, but I'm still pretty new to soap making. Love your videos btw! Can I make this as a big log and slice it into bars? Or does it do best in individual molds like you used?
Thanks! You can make it in a big log if you like, just don't use your favourite knife! The pumice will damage it for sure.
Ooh that's a good point!! I hadn't thought of that. Can't wait to try this one! Thanks for the advice
Hey Elly , I've a question for you. I just made some coconut soap with nano silver as the water and added 28g of dried citrus peel. I peeked at it mid jell and quickly covered it up and now two days later just took it out of the mold and there's a channel of un cured something along the center bottom of the loaf. I"m thinking it was just too much peel and it didn't get incorporated all the way. I'm curious if you have any experience with this that you would share. I love you channel!
Hi, I'm not sure what happened there. I've never heard of nano silver! I wonder if that's the culprit?
I’ve used that before without getting that reaction. I’m thinking it was just too much of the citrus peel.
Hello! I love your recipe and the fact that you always try to use interesting ingredients. Lately I came across some Mastic berry Oil ( pistacia lentiscus), and I wanted to make some soap with it. The only problem I can't find the saponification value of such oil. Do you know where I can find it or if you know the number can you tell me, please? Thank you
Hi Ilaria, great question! Unfortunately I've never heard of that ingredient though... sorry!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking it's not known very much unfortunately, is typical of Sardinia and I think some smaller island of Greece. Thank you
I love you. I try to learn makeing sope
hi, very interesting and informative episode. It got me thinking about possibly using coral that washes up when dead. What do you think? its probably a bit more scratchy than the pumice but i dont know it seems interesting. What do you think?
Hi Malika, it's illegal to remove coral (even dead) from the beaches here, so I'd check what's allowed and/or environmentally responsible in your area before you considered it. I'd probably sooner use some other natural ingredient (things like nut husks, or ground tree bark) before I took coral from a beach. Have a think of what else you could use. Even more finely ground poppy seeds would be good!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely going to keep looking at unusual and innovative things to incorporate without negatively affecting the environment. Xx
Good for you! No worries :)
Hey Elly! Would the work for melt and pour soaps as well? I have done something similar with them before but I kept running into the problem of where my pumice would just sink to the bottom. This was fine for the first few washes, but after that there was no more pumice. 😅 Any suggestions?
Where did you get your loaf mold ? That's a nice size bar of soap. I can't find that mold on amazon.
It's from Kmart :)
Did a quick search, and it sounds like Solvol is like Lava Soap that we had here in the states.
Yes a few people have said that. It sounds like Lava soap is quite rough though, Solvol was quite smooth.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Ah, yes! It was pretty rough -- my dad had it and I remember using it a few times and got some rashy chafing on my hands. 😆
This is on my list to make. What did your dad think of it?
He loved it :)
This was awesome Elly!
Did you find your home rendered tallow stinks? I rendered some sheep tallow and it’s a bit smelly still, do you think that will leave in saponification?
Hi Kasie, I used the wet rendering method (there's a link to it in the description box) and my tallow came out quite odorless. Depending on any fragrance you used, it might cover the smell, but often some will remain. Really depends on rendering method.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking yes I used the wet method too, I did find a video that suggests repeated wet rendering with salt to purify, but it’s all with beef tallow, maybe lamb tallow is different 🤷🏼♀️
I think it probably is. You could ask Delizia from Delizia Naturally (also here in Aus) She uses sheep fat and says it's quite different to work with! She might have some tips.
In the states we had Lava soap for heavy duty hand washing. They still make it but its not the same
Oh I see. Yes I did see that name in my research.
How do you keep your soap from cracking? It seems my soap gets too hot as it gells cracking the top? This is a pretty, clean looking soap!
Thank you, perhaps you are starting with your ingredients too warm? Adding sugars and some oils will get very hot too (like lots of coconut oil).
Solvol sounds like “Lava Soap” sold in the US.
Question; Can you colour a pomice type soap?
Sure can.
Can you use beer with this soap instead of water and how would citric acid react with that?
Wash your hands Jeffrey! 🙂 I will try this out at some point, I’ve collected some pumice over the years.
Haha yes I saw that old ad. I had never seen it before! Poor old Geoffrey!
I love living on the ocean. I want to move because it has become too crowded. No one cares about the environment. I will move to another part of the ocean. Where it’s peaceful. Very Nice there. So lucky to source your own materials. Perhaps make your own solvo and sell it. Become a gazzilionaire. Hey you never know. Wow these are really beautiful.
I have solvol in my cupboard. I got it not long ago….!,,,
Hello ,Love where you get the police beautiful place!,Thank you your videos very help full!
Thank you Monica! Have fun making this soap!
Are you happy to tell me the ratio for the EOs for this recipe? Thank you.
Yes, see description box for details :)
Can you use sand instead?
It's very scratchy, but if you can find really fine sand, or make it fine, then it might be ok. I made this lovely soap with fine desert sand ruclips.net/video/g5iny6MZ3S4/видео.html
