The reason why the Ph is relatively high is that you dissolved the lye and used it right away. You should dissolve it and keep it in room temperature for at least 24 hours. This yields the soap to be very smooth and with low Ph level. As for the lather part, try adding some citric acid next time, thus enhances the production of lather.
This info is passed on to me by a professional soap maker where I live in Damascus. So try it this way next time.
    Keep it up 👍

I used to teach Medievel apothecary and I am excited to start soap making soon following your advise. The best time of day to pick herbs is first thing in the morning before the sun has had a chance to evaporate the aromatic oils. Pick after any dew has evaporated and before the sun gets hot. See if you get an even richer rosemary oil picking earlier. Just an idea to try.

Coconut oil is the lather maker in the main trinity of oils. Palm adds hardness and olive cleanses. Castor oil ups the lather and skin nourushment, as does butters (butters also add hardness). Hemp seed is very nourishing as well, maybe try using a bit of that since it's also a green color? Thanks for the video, I've been curious about what infusing our main batch oils would do and this gave lots of imput. That was a wild color morph, i probably would have freaked out if i tried it without your video! 😂

Thank you for the video. I was so glad to learn how to infuse fresh leaves . For years I have infused much of my olive oil with dried chamomile and then I keep a couple of bottles of infused comfrey olive oil. I have always use the dried leaves and just let it sit in the olive oil for a few months and then strain it. Comfrey makes an absolutely gorgeous green for marbling soaps with, I have a large rosemary plant myself and I’m going to try your method. I really appreciate your recipes in your teaching technique. They always work well for me. I have been making soap for well over 40 years and I’ve learned a lot from you. Thank you.
Donna in NW Florida. By the way, just for preference, I only infused extra-virgin olive oil. Then I use that oil in a normal recipe with no other changes calculated because of the infusion , the soaps always turned out beautifully. I didn’t realize I was supposed to do something different.

Hi! Im spanish and using new and clean virgin olive oil is a sacrilege. Use the kitchen used oil, the Sodium hydroxide is going to kill the properties anyways. This way you can recycle the used oil, in Spain we make soap with the oil used for cooking, we dont throw it in the garbage (is also forbiden because a drop of oil contaminates thounsands litres of water).
The main point is not to waste the oil.
Also!! try to avoid metal spoons to move the mix, use wooden spoons :)

@@dianetm8557 Hi! You won’t notice any smell because sodium hydroxide neutralizes them. You can add any essence if you want. Here we use this kind of soaps to wash delicate clothing and cotton clothes in general. We also use it for kitchen counter cleaning, floors, tiles… This soap is a good bug repellent so you can dissolve a teaspoon in a liter of water and spray it on the plants.

Caustic waste water was a problem for me too until I started pouring some household cleaning vinegar into the wash water. It doesn't take much and neutralizes the caustic water instantly with no fumes. Salts are the main byproduct. It's cheap, easy and no mess.

Herbalist here, you did perfect, never cook the herbs above 96 or so. Also it gets the moisture out if you use this method, so you could store it but only for like 3 months or so after straining. and that's not about moisture, that's about cooking the oil which changes how the oil lasts. last note, don't squeeze with fresh plant matter( it keep moisture in the plants not squeezed out the last bit) let it drip out!!!

This one guy Bernardo is very interesting, the way he is doing a liquid soap from the bar soap is amazing. See what you can say about that. I find olive oil soaps need way more time to dry and be ready. As tradition says. Eg 100% olive oil castile, takes a year then works fab. Lathers great.
If desperate I use after 6m its just not as good as at a year.
Just thought that may help someone,

Would you get more of the nutrients of rosemary if you had blended it with the oil, let it sit, then strain it? Seems like rosemary whole might not give as much of the scent nor the essential nutrients. Just wondering as I have no idea and have just started learning.

I can’t take the chance of inhaling any fumes. I thought I would have to give up soap making and I found out if ur water is frozen solid like ice cubes and u add the lye flakes ( I use flakes cause I will never use the beads again they flew into the air and thankfully I had a mask on so I use flakes only from bramble berry the flakes r to heavy to flow at into the air.), anyway if u freeze ur water into ice cubes then measure ur lye flakes out and add the lye flakes to ur ice cubes then gently stir a lil add more give it I stir then some more then stir and once it’s 1/4 of the way melted u can dump the rest in. I don’t know why this works but there is 100% no fumes and it still gets hot gradually let it cool or u can do ur heat transfer method at that point when it’s at its hottest. This was a total game changer.

Hi, unfortunately no, soap recipes cannot be changed without them being recalculated in a soap calculator. It's very important that each recipe is calculated accurately in a soap calculator, according to the oils used. This is to ensure that the correct sodium hydroxide amount is used for each oil type. I hope that helps :)

This non soap maker enjoyed this. I love rosemary too but I'm moving house next week, so tomorrow I will be planting out my potted rosemary bush into a small birds and bees garden I developed after the epic 2019 - 2020 bushfires in eastern Australia. So many creatures lost habitat that I had some big logs left on the non-existent footpath and front garden after a large tree was cut down and I add plants to the area around the logs which will eventually compost away long after I've left this mortal coil. The plants will remain, without too much human input I hope. I've taken a cutting for my next garden, which is doing well. The thing about rosemary is it will flower profusely and it is as tough as old boots, so perfect for this little bit of small creature refuge.
I buy soap from the health food store normally and have noticed the rose soap I'm currently using has left my skin on my hands a bit rough this winter. I reckon I need to seek out some of that olive oil soap from Provence. Fortunately there's a little French shop which sells it nearby. It's the first time I've had this problem so I reckon a change in suppliers has changed access to the good soap of the past. I suspect they might be going for smell rather than the overall good quality of the soap and it hasn't turned out well, for my hands at least. So that is on my post move "to do" list.
As always Elly I enjoy your "mad scientist" soap making and always wish I lived near you so I could annoy you and appreciate your soap up close and personal. Your family and friends are lucky folk and I bet they really love it when you stock up on a new soap. I hope it hardens up, but I'm not sure about the lack of lather. Just a suggestion. Rosemary is supposed to be wonderful for thinning elderly hair and mild alopecia, so there's that 😅

Why??? Do people make soap making so complicated?? Before someone came along and pounded it into everyone’s head that everything has to be weighed, no one weighed and used ph strips. I’ve been making soap for 30 years. . All this calculating, and weighing with scales it’s ridiculous. All my recipes are poured in oz and cups. And people.. DONT use palm oil. Harvesting palm oil destroys our rain forests. We as a world need the rain forests. They are vital to our eco system. Your soap is pretty though.

  • @bugbubblessoap

The colour change is so cool!! Interesting about the ph, maybe the oil left behind in the rosemary leaves wasn't evenly distributed between the palm and olive, so the % remaining wasn't accurate for the soap calc? Thank you for the herbal soap inspiration I'm inspired!
