Bill Skarsgard (who played Pennywise) was really nervous and concerned that he was traumatizing the child actors with his performance. After one especially intense scene one of the kids snapped out of his scared acting and enthusiastically told Skarsgard he really liked what he was doing with the character.
I heard that the kids didn't want to see him in costume because they wanted a true reactions and they were like "we are professionals, we won't get scared" and when they first watched Bill they got scared and weren't in character.
@@NatashaSalgadoit was the director and producers who didn’t have them see pennywise so they could film a true reaction. The first scene the kids saw him was when he comes out of the fridge to get Eddie
Fun Facts: They never really address it in the movie (which is irritating) but IT has this power that influences all the adults in town to be apathetic and ignorant to all of the murders and disappearances in Derry, it also makes some of them outright cruel. And the reason Pennywise doesn’t eat the kids right away whenever he gets the chance is that he feels they NEED to be terrified because it “salts the meat”.
Fun fact, most of the jokes between Richie and Eddie were actually written by Jack Dylan Grazer, the young actor who plays Eddie. He is definitely one to watch out for in his future career.
This movie, in my opinion, deserved more love in the awards, but as usual in the horror genre, when it has great movies, it doesn't get the love it deserves (The Lighthouse, Hereditary, The Witch, Midsommar, Us, Pearl, etc) Bill Skarsgard's performance should've gotten him at least a nomination, and the movie should've been nominated for best picture.

This one is closer to the spirit of the book than the first one was, but the first one was made as a TV mini series so it was very toned down. I love how the clown's name is Pennywise, the first half of that saying, "penny-wise, but pound-foolish", which basically means "you don't see the big picture", like the entity that likes to look like a clown is something more. Brilliant writing, especially how Stephen King handled all the childhood trauma and fears and whatnot. For example, Beverly is afraid of being a woman, thanks to her father, I guess. Her jumpscare was hair and blood, which makes total sense. The ending, though, had to be re-written, in the book they... you know what, as is the norm with Stephen King, the first 75% of the book was great.

Tim Curry's Pennywise was pretty frightening in the TV movie. The book has some crazy stuff in it, but my favorite is adult Ben learning that Pennywise is back in Derry and drinking down a pint glass of whiskey, then walking out of the bar stone sober.
YESSSS!! This is one of my favorite scenes in the book. I understand why it got cut, but it tells us SO much about adult Ben. I felt almost adds bad for him in this scene as I did in some of the 50s bullying scenes.

So I actually live in southern Maine, and I remember in the weeks leading up to the release of this movie there were red balloons tied to a lot of mailboxes around our towns, fantastic marketing. However anyone who lives anywhere in not just Maine but all of New England could tell you that this movie was shot nowhere near Maine, nor do any part of the town look like Maine. It’s just funny how almost all of Stephen King’s best movie adaptations are set in Maine and yet they never shoot here. I get it, it’s probably really expensive, but you could at least get some landscape shots. Also Pennywise is essentially the nightmare fusion of Scarecrow, The Joker and a Bogart.
@@thedarkknight2221 Ahhh. Hey I don't mean anything by it, just saw this immediately after I said how this was closer to Maine than any adaptation and got curious how we had such different conclusions. I'm from the intersection of Oxford, Cumberland, and Androscoggin Counties. No idea if even naming the town would matter, but if I said the North end of the G-NG area, would that ring a bell? Haha Anyway, it's not perfect of course, but. Idk, maybe it's just me. I just thought compared to all of the other Stephen King adaptations we've gotten? Heck of a lot closer to something like Lewiston/Auburn, Rumford/Mexico, Lisbon Falls or Livermore Falls. Maybe not all of the neighborhood stuff (at least it doesn't look like midwest suburbs like the tv movie), but I thought that one aerial shot of the town kinda looked right. I think that was an old mill town in Canada, though. Think we don't give tax incentives that'd help much in filming on location.
The part where Beverly goes to the bathroom and all the blood shoots from the sink , is basically her struggling with her home trauma. She goes to the pharmacy and buys the tampons and the blood squirting is her becoming a woman. That's why the dad asks " Are you still my little girl ? "
Late to the party on this one, I loved your reaction to this! These movies do a fairly decent job with the books material although the dates have been heavily adjusted for a more modern audience but the original setting for the kids in the late 50s makes a lot more sense. There is so much important information in the book that it would take several movies to really do it any kind of justice, the story is way deeper than you can imagine and honestly, much more terrifying, it's actually one of my all-time favorite books as it doesn't shy away from anything.
They didn't include what might be my favorite part of the movie so I'm just brining it up here. When the kid in the library is looking through the books, in the background an older lady is starring at him. It's so unsettling.
Keep kristen in every reason she's sooo goddamn fun in every reaction she just gives this fun vibe and enjoys the movies definitely need her in every movie reaction
35:58 - The book dives a bit deeper into this. The parents subliminally remember that there is something out there killing kids, but they can't consciously remember what it is, so they are all over-protective and most have probably met Pennywise when they were young, so they grew up mentally disturbed.
I’m pretty sure this scene was a case of Munchausen by proxy, it’s a type of child abuse in which the parent makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make it look like the child is sick and also device the child into thinking they are ill. In the books Eddie didn’t even have asthma and the reason he has so called “asthma attacks” they were actually caused by anxiety.
This movie, is the 2nd of the series. The first, 1990. The people that made then 2nd series is brilliant. In the Book, IT, IT comes aroundb every 27 years. And the time between 1990 and 2017 is 27 years. The difference between the 90' movie and the 17', the 1990 movie w2as made for television and had to meet all of the codes TV was hindered by. The 2017 movie, made and released in the movie theaters. Totally different set of guidelines. But the "27 years" thing, brilliantly played upon. The story is the same, but the times are different. Different movies shown, different cars. They did a really good job making the second series. Oh, yeah. 1990 movie was a 2 night Mini-Series. The 2017 series, this is the first half of the book. Inn my opinion, you should watch the 1990 version also. Great Post. I'm anxiously waiting for Chapter 2. Great Post.
The movie is from the perspective of the kids so all the grownups seem kinda strange, also IT is looming over the town affecting the town and the people in it negatively, but yea basically all grownups is either evil or creepy ;) Oh yea, in the beginning when Georgie is looking for his boat he says "Bill is gonna kill me" which kinda is an easter egg premonition because Bill Skarsgård who plays Pennywise then shows up and does just that :)

What are you talking about? It looks like half of the twined mill towns. What, are you from York county? Lol
@@Knight-Bishop Saco actually
@@thedarkknight2221 Ahhh. Hey I don't mean anything by it, just saw this immediately after I said how this was closer to Maine than any adaptation and got curious how we had such different conclusions. I'm from the intersection of Oxford, Cumberland, and Androscoggin Counties. No idea if even naming the town would matter, but if I said the North end of the G-NG area, would that ring a bell? Haha
Anyway, it's not perfect of course, but.
No she did not buy tampons she bought hair color called tampax
@@HudaZain-r3p tampons / Tampax same thing
I love all the funny memes made from the sewer scene 😂. Never get old.
Fun fact the refrigerator scene was pratical hes just really flexible
They didn't include what might be my favorite part of the movie so I'm just brining it up here. When the kid in the library is looking through the books, in the background an older lady is starring at him. It's so unsettling.
There are also a million eater eggs in this movie. IT is everywhere.
I am watching the minute at 26:59 repeatedly, approximately 50 times.😂
You must check (Ryan George's) pitch meeting for this movie 😅
But yes, also that.
The show is Ruby starring Patricia Arquette on Hulu
You did a great job at reacting to IT.
I Love With The Rock War Scene With Anthrax Song Anti Social 😄😄😄🔥🔥🔥
Yes, watch chapter 2 😮 I didn't jump when you jumped, Kristen. 😂 But I did see your soul leaving your body.
27:01 - thank you Kristen for the most hilarious reaction to a jump scare I have ever seen! You are a movie-watching treasure LOL!!!!!
"All the boys like her."
Book readers: *SCREAM INTERNALLY"
Yeah, the old IT is saw when i was 12. Slept awful for a year, afraid to see a balloon pop up next to my bed.
I reeeaaally REALLY hope the new prequel series does all of these films justice!
Great Post.
Fun fact: the scene in the house when Pennywise attacks the kids, was the first scene the actors saw It. That was their genuine reactions

The movie did a great job trying to capture the book. The TV movie is a classic. But was limited in what it could show.
It also actually looks like an old inland mill town in Maine, too. 😅
