Pro tip:
If you track and bleed your brakes often you should use denatured alcohol (pick up at home depot) to clean the Bleeder and catch cans before you store them away. Brake fluid can be very corrosive, so make sure to clean them after every use!
Great point. Thanks a lot!!
@hiphopsocnroc Hi. Can’t find denatured alcohol anywhere! Idk why? Can I substitute with isopropyl alcohol instead? Would that work just as well, or no? Thanks
Echoing what others said. There are many videos out there, but you kept it short and correct. Nice one!
Thanks!!
Hey Tommy, can you go over the basic of how to properly jack up the car, how to make sure the jack stands are safe, right jacking points and links to the tools
Great idea. Will do!
You need to activate the DSC pump in bleed mode with ISTA to do this correctly and bleed the entire system.
Can you elaborate please?
Air can be trapped in the dcs system as well so to properly flush and bleed the entire system you should activate the dsc pump so it pushes everything out of the entire system. You avtivate it with ista before you flush and bleed on every caliper
@@sanjinred how you active the system. ?
@@christianmedina9908 With DIS or another diagnostic tool able to communicate with the DSC system where you can activate bleed mode if you want to change the entire fluid, not only some of it
@@sanjinred or INPA ;-)
Tommy - just a suggestion, when you loosen your bleed screws use a "flare nut wrench" or use the box end of the wrench. The open end, while USUALLY fine, can spread especially if the bleed screws get sticky (oxidize as car ages). Ask me how I know.. but it's not fun removing a stripped bleed screw because the open end of the wrench spread and stripped the screw :(
Great suggestion. Thanks!!
@@TommyLGarage If you end up going to any events anytime soon please do let me know, I am just over in SE PA and looking for track days, events, etc. Have a silly 700+ rwhp E34 and a F30 328 daily :) Love the channel.
Will do! I'll be posting it on my channel
Ditch the Motive unit and buy the Schwaben unit, there is no chance of interhose leaks because the Schwaben unit had not middle connector. The hose goes direct from the bottle to the brake fluid reservoir.
Will look into it. Thanks!!
Great video. I love the way you sneakily did not show the tightening of the bleed nipple as the spanner was in the undo position and there was no way to reverse it and tighten it back up 😂
Thanks for the love!
I said same thing! Clever editing LOL
Is there anything else that needs to be done when flushing the OEM brake fluid to something specifically for the track?
Nope. This is it. That’s what I do for the track
Tommy L Garage I appreciate all your responses! I just changed my rear diff fluid. Just got transmission and brake flush remaining.
I got it. Jesus Christ.. I'll buy the mudflap. I don't even have an M4.
Hahah
You also need to run the DSC bleed program in ISTA
Not really. It works fine like this.
@@TommyLGarage yeah it works fine the way you did it. But if you wanted to do it as it was designed then the DSC pump needs to be bled of any air bubbles too. Just letting others know.
Hey Tommy, how you reset the power steering replacement warning “idiot” light, only dealers can do it or is there a reset?
You’re talking about the service light? It’s very easy to
@@TommyLGarage yes, says brake service, I’m gonna follow your instructions how to flush the fluid,
Need how to reset?
Meant to say brake service, sorry
So in car world, bleeding is a good thing? 🧐
A Heated Mess oh yes. And I do use these cleaning pads....
Yep, DOT 4 all day
Great job!
You probably dont care at all but does anyone know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid forgot my password. I love any tricks you can offer me
@Sage Seth instablaster :)
@Brandon Augustus Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Brandon Augustus it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you really help me out!
@Sage Seth no problem :D
Great vid thank you!! Im about to purchase the motive bleeder kit..one question, after sucking out all the old fluid from the brake cylinder/reservoir, arent you suppose to put in new fluid in? Before you start pumping the pressure bleeder?
Hi. Yes. Suck out the old one and put the new fluid inside then the pressure Will push the old one out
Hey where do you go to the track? I'm in New York and want to get into this type of racing
NJMp. Look at motorsportreg.com
Thank you TLG. Another quality video.
If you don’t mind me asking - what kind of hand pump evacuator is that? And where can I get one? Thanks in advanced.
Don’t get it. Just squeeze the bottle and evacuate like that. Easier and cheaper
Where could I get one of those evacuator pump you are using??
Zen0s I got it at harbor freight. You can find it at any hardware shop or even Home Depot. But honestly the below will work better:
amzn.to/2lAeGar
Tommy L Garage shoot! Actually found one like yours on Amazon... Hope it works well. Thx Tommy!
Oh I’m sure it will. Just keep pumping! Hehe
You checked the clutch. Is it part of the same hydraulic system as the brakes in an M car ?
Yes it is part of the same system. Technically I could have bled the clutch too
Is this the same process for the clutch but you would bleed from the slave cylinder?
Precisely
Good job! Great video! Why didn’t you bleed the clutch too?
I didn’t need to do it. I’ll do it next time
if you change the pads like you did in the other video, do you have to bleed the breaks?
Not at all.
I did this procedure on my e92m3 with the same equipment and somehow the brake pedal reaches the floor?
You must have air in the system or left a bleed valve open
@@TommyLGarage yea I thought it would be that but there is no air in the system and everything is tighten.
@@TommyLGarage it did have a lot of air prior to the flush tho
@@gabby811ify I suggest you flush it again
How often are you changing the fluid? Every track day? I did a 1 day event a month ago and am looking for a 2 day event next weekend. Fresh flush a month ago. I imagine nobody is changing it that frequently. Novice driver as well. Thanks for sharing!
For a novice I say every few track days . For me I flush before every track day
Do you know if this procedure will flush out air in the abs pump? I have to replace my abs pump and I am trying to avoid using ista or inpa.
From what I understand it should, as ABS pump just has lines running through it. If you are talking about a master cylinder, then there’s a special procedure to bleed that. But with ABS pump you should be fine
Why not bleed the clutch too while you’re at it?
Wasn’t needed and too difficult:)
Hey Tommy, if i dont track the car. Is it still safe to use MOTUL
Of course!
If you go to track why not convert to studs for your wheels
I did after this video :)
I don't track my car. Is 1 Liter of Pentosin Dot 4 fluid enough and ok to use?
Yes but for these brakes I suggest Motul RBF600.
Hey tommy I love your videos and keis motor videos I have a 2016 m3 with 37k I would love to do some mods I need your help please ty
What’s going on??
if I have the automatic transmission can I do the same procedure?
Does the brake system center with the clutch? after doing this job, do you need to reset anything on the bmw's on-board computer?
I own a 320d f30 of 2016 automatic 8-speed xdrive with msport braking system
thanks if you can answer my questions
regards
Yes the procedure is identical. No need to reset anything and no matter manual or automatic
Hi tommy, like your videos, how do i order the front mud flaps for my 2016 m3
Thanks!
Ruben Jacob email me at got6speed@gmail
Hey Tommy, I was just wondering, what type of lowering springs do you have installed, if you don't mind me asking
Amro Assaidi never mind asking questions! The more the merrier. Springs are Macht Schnell. 1.1 inch drop up front and 0.9 in the rear.
Don’t you need to prime the sending hose before? Otherwise you get air in the system.
Nope. It pushes the fluid that’s already in the cylinder
What happens when you pressurize it and it's slowly leaking?
Tighten the cap a bit more
@@TommyLGarage I'm pretty sure my cap is fully on.. I'll try plumbers thread too. one more question: is it normal for the pistons to start popping out with 15 psi? My front ones don't do it at all but the furthest one the pistons pop out against the pads really strong. Won't budge. Could that also be a reason for leak?
Hi Tommy, thanks for the video. Really helpful. 2 questions. The 2 bottles you used were 500ml? So 1L is enough to bleed and refill the entire system?
Secondly, my dashboard keeps telling me 'brake fluid swap due' how do I reset this after I've done the fluid change myself?
Thanks a lot!
2 bottles will be enough for sure, especially with this method.
Tommy great vid are you going too the pocano's half mile race coming up soon?
Thanks! I’m not sure. When is it ??
It's April 21 8 a.m.-5 p.m. I went to the wanna go fast half mile races in Florida now I'm hooked
Chris Baines might be tough. Any other events you’re going to ?
not sure yet just trying to figure good events to go to and meet other car guys... just moved recently from florida lol the dragstrip in jersey closed so not much events to do on the weekend..
Is the same process used for CCB’s?
Yes exactly the same
Tommy L Garage awesome thanks for the quick response
I want to ask
How much brake fluid is actually used
I usually use about a bottle and a half
I've watched many brake bleeding videos. thanks for explaining everything it made me feel like I can do it !! thanks :)
Thanks for watching and o appreciate the kind words!
Was gonna tackle this but the motive bleeder couldnt hold the pressure
That’s odd. Must be faulty
Hey Tommy, what wrench size did you used for the bleeder valve ?
I believe 10mm
Thanks 🙏
11 mm
Can u send the spec on ur splash guards
Shoot me an email at got6speed @ gmail and I’ll make you a set
Why did you put aluminum foil on the tire balances
Savage Turk It is to prevent them from falling down at track days. After you come down from the track and your brakes are really hot, when you park the heat from the brakes can melt the glue from the weights and they will simply fall down. Having this tape helps them stay together
Great diy video! Keep it up!
yousaf qamar thanks man!!!
where are your jack stands?
Nice catch
Do you know the bleeder valve torque specs?
Yes. It’s whatever feels tight enough
@@TommyLGarage is it common though for fluid to weep/seep out from where the rubber cap meets the bleeder valve at the base even after closing the bleeder valve tight?
@@ecliffg not common at all. Tighten it!
@@TommyLGarage it's pretty snug already and it feels like anything more would over tighten the valves.
Hey im curious,,what makes you go for the f80 m3 instead of the e90 m3? What are the reasons? better mpg, newer tech, warranty etc? and have you ever considered e90 m3 before this? F8x is a great car really,im just curious about your reasons..anyway keep the content coming!
edited: you also didnt have the led headlights and rearlights..didnt think of an upgrade? Thanks again :)
Nunez Barbarossa It all came down to the fact that I really enjoy turbocharged engine. Even though the exhaust note on the V8 is a lot nicer, I still prefer forest induction. Besides the seats, the electronics, and the overall looks all completed it for me. I’ve decided that what I really like about the E90 is the sound only - everything else the F80 was the winner.
Tail lights are LED - headlamps might be upgraded soon but I do like the angel eyes.
Tommy L Garage Interesting..i guess if you're into turbocharged engine f80 is a no brainer..it looks better and have newer tech..you also seems to like the hud and the auto rev match which e90 didnt have..thanks for replying,it really cures my curiosity there😂
does this all work for a e92 m3?
Yes this procedure should be the same
Any reason why you didn’t bleed the ABS? There is a procedure to activate it this will ensure the system is fully flushed of all old fluid. Critical when changing to a fluid you cannot mix ie dot 5.
Supertec Racing I did that back in November. But good point !
The pressure actually does bleed the abs, that’s the point of getting the right pressure before bleeding the fluid.
Njmp this weekend?
Chester ONeill yes! You ?
Tommy L Garage yup. I got bumped to red run group though. Heard this one is sold out.
Chester ONeill awesome. See you there. How do you know what run group you’re in? I still don’t know mine.
Tommy L Garage I'm friends with an instructor and just by chance he happened to pull me as student. Yea kinda wierd though that we didn't get sent run groups or anything. Seems like registration closed super late. I guess when you tech you'll get all your stuff. I'm doing the 7-8 tech tonight.
Chester ONeill I will see you there tonight then! Let’s make sure we connect!
Actually it is a strut at the front I believe.
Nice catch :)
Did anyone try DOT 5.1 on BMW ?
Haven’t tried yet.
Nice video, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
Yeah men great work, there is no good as working on your own car
but how about pressing the cluch before start the car!!
ما القصة؟ I did! The car won’t start if you don’t press the clutch :). Thanks for watching man!
haha in my renault it will start normaly
ما القصة؟ what Renault do you Drive? Gotta love French cars.
Renault Clio III 2009
ما القصة؟ nice one. My uncle had a mid 90s Clio back in Poland
Fantastic job!
mj p thanks!!!
Great video. Appreciate it!
Hope it was helpful
This is what I NEEDED ! perfect!!! my flush is do soon! Sweet! - Pozdrawiam
I’m glad it was helpful
Good👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
That doesn't even make sense that you bleed the furthest caliper first. Because fresh fluid would first flow to the closest caliper, and then you would shut off the valve to the furthest? Then that means the furthest never receives fresh fluid.
That’s how you do it
👌
:)
No wonder he had to bleed his brakes after every track event. Motul 600 dude really.
Why not? It’s super easy.
what happened at 8:00 😂
Not sure!
Tommy check out my forum post about the clutch delay valve for these cars. I did it on my F30 but the F80 uses the same slave cylinder as the the F30. Improved shifting and no jerk when shifting 1st to 2nd.
f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1486773
Mike Mike very nicely done! I might do it when I hit 40-50k miles. For now shifting and clutch both seem fine. But seriously great job. I’ve read through your thread and it quite impressive. Thanks for sharing!
Tommy L Garage as long as you’re not power shifting or dumping the clutch it shouldent have much effect for you besides the pesky 1-2 shift. However clutch pedel does seem easier to push from midway down. Modification is easy enough and I think you should do it and put it on your channel. If interested I can modify a new one and send it to you.
I don’t even own a M3 why am I watching this 👄
Because you’re a great sport!! Thanks for watching!!
