The people behind the Ship of Harkinian Zelda PC port are now working on a native port of Starfox called "Starship" I'm curious as to how that will be when it releases. EDIT: It's out now and it's GOOOOOOOOD!!!
I certainly hope citra gets their act together. I've been working hard to build the most definitive version of the game surrounding the emulator. Re-orchestrated music, restoring the original voice acting (uncompressed) and upscaling all of the textures for a better high definition experience. It's frustrating knowing that despite all the work I've put into it, I just can't fix the problems on an emulator level.
citra just had a good breakthrough with their graphics engine, one of the guys who worked on it said that it was possible that fixing star fox would be easier now. i'll believe it when i see it, but i hope that's the case.
@@beardalaxy One can hope. It's been forever since I've had the motivation to even work on the project due to how many setbacks and stagnation I've faced. I had spoken with a couple of devs on the github page in my bug reports, but I hadn't really seen much enthusiasm for fixing the issue.
N64 w/ CRT >>>> 3DS > Switch > 64 w/o CRT > 64 emulation > Wii U > 3DS emulation >>>>> Wii Good condition 64 controllers allow for precision movements that just aren't possible on other versions plus it has a best rumble bar none. CRT TVs reduce input lag and just look beautiful. Plus it has the best lighting which has never been emulated. 3DS is held back by being on 3DS, the crappy soundtrack and voices are fixed by mods. Switch has input lag, deadzone on control stick and graphic errors. SF64 is like the only game that isn't better on fan emus. Wii U has all the issues of the last two but the deadzone is even worse and the lighting is borderline unseeable anything starting here is just not worth playing. 3DS emulation has great potential but last I heard some levels are upside down. Wii is outright bugged, holding Z and R to cancel charge shot lock on won't always work making good scores pretty much impossible and break and boost are mapped to the right stick. It cannot be overstated how bad Wii is
I agree. The N64 version with a CRT and an original controller is the only way to play it in my opinion. I tried the VC one and the input lag was so bad and playing with two analog sticks just doesn’t work.
The actual BEST way to play Star Fox 64 (in score attack focus), is on a PAL Nintendo 64. The reason for this is because the PAL N64 runs at a lower frame rate. The lower frame rate produces more lag. That sounds bad, but it's actually really good! More lag means there is more time to aim, thus giving you the absolute best chance at getting the highest score possible on each planet. The next alternative would be an original NTSC N64.
It's also best to have a Version 1.0 cart because they do not have a score cap. All future versions (unaware of 3DS), has a score cap of 511, because getting 512 would over-flow the Rank-In table at the end cutscene, resulting in removing 256 points from your score. It is possible to get higher than 511 on multiple stages.
@@ultracreed3080 nope, because it is possible to get over 511 points on multiple stages. Sometimes even 700, and in solar it’s possible to get 999 points, same with Bolse. It only effects the rank in scores, but for score running, this is just a graphical bug, but the score still counts. Personally, if I was playing I would want to go for the highest score possible, and not be blocked from being able to get more than 511 points due to Nintendo putting a score cap instead of fixing the issue of the score data being stored in a byte instead of 2 bytes that would allow for the score to save correctly
@@livvydoodlez this is better for people who are specifically going for score runs, but not for more casual players. the score gets reset which, if a casual player did manage to hit a higher score, would be pretty disappointing.
My first experience with this game was on 3DS then I eventually got the original version on Wii U and I vastly preferred the remake. I can’t change the inverted controls after getting used to them in Star Fox Zero and the remake of Star Fox 64.
I love this video series and look forward to the next one I have been meaning to get the 3DS voiceover mod I like playing on switch because suspend points, original controller and online play Too bad about the the borders
I think the new voice acting was fine. I just don't know why they bothered considering the Giga-Leak showed that they still had high quality, uncompressed versions of the original clips.
@@alejandrovelez6358 yeah, the gigaleak came from ique iirc, not nintendo, so it's possible they thought they actually were gone forever. there is also sometimes an issue with reusing voice acting clips in new games, so it could have just come down to that sort of thing.
I wasn't aware than the 3ds version don't have the original voice, I play the game in French, wich is a very bad dubbing but now than I know than we can mod the game to have to original voice, I going ti do that 👍. The video is nice and clear, but if I can suggest something, I think it's weird for a video to do a list from the best to the worst. I think it's going to be better if you start with the Worst/Less Good version and finish with the Best way to play it..
Thanks for watching :) I chose to go from best to worst, because that way people can more quickly find the best way that available to them. I'm still not sure if this is better or if I should go from lowest to best (like any other list), that's something I might change. Thanks for the feedback!
I think it's weird that you put Dolphin VC so high with Wii VC being so low. Wii VC has emulation errors and Dolphin replicates that. Modern-day N64 emulators like m64p emulate the original release much better. Also, putting Citra above Wii VC is a rather weird choice. I'd rather play a level that's too dark than one upside down with my controls messed up. I don't think Citra is ever going to be fixed, either, because it's been 5+ years since anything was touched on Star Fox 64 3D. I actually went out of my way to buy an N64 and a copy of SF64 just so I could play the original on original hardware. N64 emulation *can* have some issues, so the option to play my favorite game on the original console with the only real compromise being the controller (which I could just buy an adapter for if I wanted a GC controller I guess) is very nice. In comparison to the Wii VC release, the slowdown isn't much worse, and in some cases with older consoles the devs planned for it, so when a game speeds up it can throw off the pacing/balance a little bit. Case in point, Star Fox on the SNES. I don't think it is *objectively* the worst version of the game. IMO that goes to Citra, because it is emulated so poorly that you cannot complete it without battling with upside down levels.
@@ph8808 best way is probably an N64 on a CRT. most accessible way while still being great is using your controller of choice with m64p. for what it's worth, the switch version isn't too bad either, it's just not *as* good and you still have to pay a bit too much for it imo. i wish citra emulated the game better, because i'd probably say that was the best way to play it if that were the case.

Solid comparison video, big ups 🙏💪 Maybe Dino Crisis 1 for the next one? 🤔
Best way to play Majoras Mask sounds interesting now that I think of it

Wish the source code for this one could be found. This childhood memory of mine deserves a PC port just as much as ocarina and sm64
The source code is never lost, we just can't use it. PC ports of OoT and SM64 are done by reverse engineering.
These videos are quite interesting . Very nice .
Thanks!!
I play on N64 because it gives most nostalgia

Thank you so much :)
Beat this on the N64 about 25 years ago so will wait for the PC port with great mods instead.
Does the 3DS mod install the uncompressed versions of the dialogue sound files or the original N64 compressed versions?
Sadly there are no official uncompressed versions of the original dialogue. Its the original dialogue of the Nintendo 64 release.
@@ultracreed3080 no there is. It all leaked online a couple of years ago and there's a mod that puts them in the 3DS version

I hate playing videogames on a small screen… cant you plug the 3ds into a tv..??
With an expensive mod, you can connect your 3DS console via HDMI, not without modding your console.
I think someone patched the uncompressed music and dialogue from the giga leak into citra.

Definitely on 3DS, the N64 one looks so outdated (and i’m writing this as a big fan of the game)
